Neocrisis: Is Square-Enix Still The JRPG King?

Homicide from Neocrisis writes: "I saw their earlier titles such as Secret of Mana, Chrono and Super Mario RPG. They all brought a smile to my face as I can remember the days when I was a kid and enjoyed them. Then their latest games were shown and the smile went away. Square went from being one of the best JRPG makers out there to just another RPG maker. Is Square still the JRPG king we all know or has they lost it? Let's take a stroll down memory lane and recall Square's history."

without reading i'll comment on the title.

Square-Enix is the new or the japanese version Electronic Arts

many many many favorable, favorite, AAA, titles that they will publish and produce across the planet..

then make it play, sound and look like garbage and ask that you pay top dollar for less than mediocre games.

in 3 years Peter Moore will be announced as the new face/spokesperson for Square-Enix.

RPG Guy6049d ago

Long time (20 yrs or so now I think) Square fan, who now hates Square. The Japanese EA? Good summary. I hope Level 5 really got White Knight to the level of AAA, God-status that it has the potential to be. If it did, Level 5's recent performance may put it beyond Square.

Still, for RPGs in general (all forms), Bethesda and BioWare FTW!

Lelouch V Brit6049d ago (Edited 6049d ago )

The last good Square-Enix's RPG Game Was Final Fantasy 12. Maybe Final Fantasy 13 Can save their crown.

Software_Lover6049d ago (Edited 6049d ago )

So this has nothing to do with Square Enix and more of your hatred for Microsoft?

I still think they are pretty good. Its just more competition out there and other players have stepped their game up. I plan on buying FF13 (ps3) when it comes out. I like JRPG's as long as they are good and can keep my attention.

I liked Lost Odyssey. Didn't really care too much for Blue Dragon. Liked Enchanted Arms, didn't care too much for Eternal sonata. I go by the game not the company.

ErcsYou6049d ago

SquareSoft was the king, not SquareEnix... they still have to earn their respect....

While i am on the subject i have a few words for SquareEnix..
If you fu@k up FinalFantasy 13, il'll kill you..And thats not a threat, thats a promise

callahan096049d ago

Well if your opinion is that they are still pretty good, why not name some recent games of their's that you liked? You only named games by Namco, Mistwalker, and From Software.

Danja6049d ago

I agree Squaresoft was amazing ..

But SE is complete sh!t thses days , I hope WKC becomes a huge hit..so Level 5 will get more props and dethrown SE...

Software_Lover6049d ago (Edited 6049d ago )

I did that to prove that others have gotten good.

I liked Final Fantasy 12 (just pulled it out 2 weeks ago actually. I liked the Drakengard game (even though it wasn't all that great, LOL).

Grandia 3 (not sure if they made the ones for the dreamcast but I liked those also).
Dirge of Cerebus (for the most part. Not all that great IMHO)
Valkyrie profile 2
FF7 crysis core (even though you only used one button)
Infinite Undiscovery (yes I liked it)
Last Remnant (just getting into it (its decent))

Is that enough?

I have others in my collection but really dont feel the need to list them all.

INehalemEXI6049d ago (Edited 6049d ago )

In order for someone to replace the king they have to deliver a franchise thats as epic as FF and just 1 game (well 1 game could but not any ive seen so far could) is not enough to usurp the throne IMO.

Bioware, Level 5, Bethesda, Mistwalker, and Tri Ace are the closest I can think of to having a chance at the crown but no. Square Enix will remain King this generation IMO. FF13 Versus, FF13 , Agito will all raise bars for there platforms I do believe. There side projects Parasite Eve 3rd B day, and Dissidia are sick too.

They need to fire there PR people they are doing a poor job if they do anything at all. Everyone screams bloody murder for a game (FF7 remake/sequal) You fing make said game top priority ASAP and let your fans know this. Don't tease with a tech demo and leave fans with ....vapors.

iamtehpwn6049d ago

I was disappointed that (even though I own a 360, JRPG's--I just like them on playstation due to the way It's been for me for 10 years now) Infinite Undiscovery was exclusive and Last Remnant was Timed Exclusive. Then I saw the review scores. LOL. Nevermind!

I'll buy Star Ocean 4. But if they really want to switch their support to 360, they better start on decent quality control. Every Game they put out for PS2 was solid gold.

NaiNaiNai6049d ago (Edited 6049d ago )

well all i have to say is, all you people leaving the SE party i hope you enjoy Level5, and what not, im staying for games like Star ocean 4, FF13, and kingdom hearts, not to mention any other titles that come one, by what im hearing from my brother im going to like last remnant. so you guys can enjoy all the other Jrpgs, ill stay with SE, and get the other goodies. have fun on that one side of the fence while i jump back and forth freely.
-nai-

@iamtehpwn

its true SE was good on the ps2. but then again, there was some less the great titles that they had as well. they even put out a racing game*SS* T_T. and SO4 is going to be great, the game has its own engine, not to mention how amazing it looks, and they said it will play like SO3. its a winner for me no matter what score someone gives it. same for alot of other games they give low scores to. people say ME had no replay value, yet i went at beat it 4 times, and have plans to actually buy the game when i get done with x-mas shopping.
-nai-

maruchan27six6049d ago (Edited 6049d ago )

In LEVEL-5 we trust.

Square Enix is really underperforming this gen.I decided to skip The Last Remnant because of it's problems.I dont know if I ever buy a Square Enix product ever again.I believe LEVEL-5 is developing Dragon Quest IX though so I will get that certainly.

Millah6049d ago

*sigh* This is too depressing....WHY?

I really wonder what would have happened if they didn't make the movie, cuz thats pretty much where everything went down....I wonder if all the old Squaresoft guys would still be there and still making the same awesome games.

SketchCA6049d ago

Hear hear. I don't understand how a company in this day and age cannot understand how listening to their customer is the best thing. You want to become a company that sells millions of products? Listen to the people buying your sh|t! Give them what they want!

People want a remake of FF7? F*ck it. Make another one. Chrono Trigger. Do it. Or re-release it in 1080p on Live or PSN. You will make money. No question. And like Demonstalker said, give us something more in the meantime! In order to be a tease, you gotta show SOMETHING! I am not teased. I am disinterested. I AM looking forward to WNC. Know why? Cause I have seen what it LOOKS like!

Tony P6049d ago

I don't think it's as serious as all that.

Square has maintained a good standing among gamers and a reputation for quality JRPGs. However, you'd be a fool not to notice other great titles in the shadow of the software giant. Whatever this new negative attitude towards SE is, I'm glad it gets other great JRPG devs noticed. Shame it took some gamers this long to diversify their tastes.

Has SE lost some footing? Undoubtedly. But that won't stop you from rushing out to get the latest FF. Dissidents will continue to maim SE with words then rush out to buy FFXIII without so much as reading a review.

Lol, yeah, Raoh is right. When games are exclusive, developers have time to make them amazing and truly a groundbreaking experience. Being multi-platform means less time for programming with a due date, an inferior version, delays, and bad quality games in most cases. After FFXII and Last Remnant....screw Square-Enix. All they're good for are remakes and sequels (rarely) oh and lets not forget crappy spin-offs.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Obama6049d ago

Level 5 is, and if Sega keeps making jrpg like VC, then it will be deemed as great jrpg maker too.

callahan096049d ago

Sega's made great RPG's in the past with Panzer Dragoon Saga, Skies of Arcadia, Shining Force, and now Valkyria Chronicles. The Sega that once ruled my wallet could yet return again. I hope!

ErcsYou6049d ago

What about PhantasyStar4 ? My hands down favorite "Sega" Rpg of all time...

Doctor Strange6049d ago

Skies of Arcadia is one of my favs, only reason why I have a gamecube and I still own the original Dreamcast version. This game screams for a sequel.

ButterToast6047d ago

I would love to see another Panzer Dragoon Saga and Skies of Arcadia made mostly because I've heard really good things but have never played them. right now I'm playing VC and love it.

maybe a real enemy is people who use terms like "the real enemy"
there can be more than 1 bad thing, t's not like a kids show with 1 big bad

This is very much a “dummy who volunteers themselves to the middle” comment.

The real enemy is a common phrase, people use it all the time.

Calm down.

jambola8d ago

i'm very calm
you seem very upset however

Notellin7d ago

You don't seem calm at all. Don't take this so seriously, you seem desperate responding to others defending your opinion that lacks any value or critical thought.

i'm not desperately dong anything, i'm tapping at keys on my keyboard bud

ABizzel17d ago (Edited 7d ago )

DEI was never the problem and it was an ignorant take to begin with.

DEI is why games like Kena Bridge of Spirits, South of Midnight, and Ghost of Tsushima exist.

DEI is why we have a huge resurgence in Japanese, Chineses, and Korean developers producing games like Stellar Blade, Black Myth, and why Nintendo & Sony exist.

DEI is why more and more games have HUGE accessibility options with both Sony and MS fully behind this.

DEI was never a bad thing, the entire purpose of DEI is representation of all people, genders, disabilities, etc…

The problem was people used DEI as a default derogatory term to describe what they believed was forced representation, which allowed colorist, racist, sexist, misogynist, homophobic, and xenophobic fools to run away with the negative DEI narrative.

jambola7d ago

you don't get to decide other people's motivations
sorry to break it to you

ABizzel16d ago (Edited 6d ago )

To each their own, however, nothing you said invalidates why some people take offense to DEI incorrectly.

Executives seem to often have an obsession with perpetual revenue growth. There is always a finite amount of consumers for a product regardless of growth. Additionally, over investment is another serious issue in gaming.

Killer2020UK8d ago

The fact that they also rarely have any real expertise in game development compounds things. They'll look at what's been successful elsewhere, lack the knowledge to properly understand why they have been successful and then force a team to 'reproduce' their badly interpreted idea of that success.

We see it so often with sequels to games that were successful too. The team are left well alone, they have a break through hit and all of sudden the money men descend on the IP and completely railroad the dev team's ideas. Usually winds up being 'make the same game but MORE'

LoveSpuds7d ago

This is true throughout all of the corporate and public sector organisations to be honest. CEO's generally move amongst the corporate world without any need to have experience of a particular industry, they simply need to rely on their senior leadership credentials. A CEO of a retail giant will just as easily transition to a CEO role in the energy sector for example.

Not defending CEOs here to be clear, I think it's a huge part of the reason the western world is so fucked up. CEOs don't need to care about the sector they work in, in fact it's better if they don't care if they want to screw everyone to make profits.

GhostScholar8d ago

Companies don’t hire executives to break even. If the goal is breaking even then why start the company in the first place.

Soy8d ago

That's understood; it's getting record profits and expecting to always beat those record profits, and seeing anything less as a total failure. Then they lay people off and raise prices to reach those record profit levels again, just to sate shareholders. It's setting expectations way too high just to spike share prices, then inevitably falling short. It's feeling entitled to being more successful than everyone else. It's the CEOs doing all this to boost their own bonuses.

ABizzel17d ago

Growth benefits the company’s profits and therefore the company’s stock if publicly traded, which pleases the shareholders making them more and more rich, which is why Growth is always at the forefront of the vast majority of any publicly traded company.

More growth = More Money and the people at the top want all the money they can get. I can’t really blame them anyone would love to see their profits go from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, to multi-millions it’s almost like a gambling addiction.

But it also goes to show someone how morals can go out the window for a lot of these people, and how amazing some CEOs are when they catch this early and provide a balance solution that takes complete care of their employees across the board while keeping the business sustainable IE: Insomniac Games ALWAYS on the best places to work list. The rest of the industry could learn.

jambola10d ago

honestly, the "real" enemy of gaming, is ourselves
if nobody bought horse armor, shitty dlc would have died almost overnight
if we stood firm and nobody bought games from companies that were bad with layoffs, it would be solved
we're the idiots supporting awful business practices, we are the ones enouraging it

TiredGamer8d ago

I think the reality that we don't want to convince ourselves of is that without the rise of "horse armor" and DLC, game budgets would have essentially stagnated (smaller teams/smaller games), or game prices would have risen much more dramatically than they have. There was an incessant drive for bigger worlds, infinite detail, and hundreds of hours of "gameplay" over the last two decades, that while perhaps a natural evolution of things, needed a suitable funding stream to accomplish.

HyperMoused8d ago

What...CEOs make tens of millions and that doesnt include SLT etc etc...we now have multiple editions of games, in game currency, MT's, battle passes.....and what do we get..worse game than what was coming out 20 years ago....dont drink the cool aid, its this nickel and dime crap that is absolutely leading us to gaming destruction.

senorfartcushion8d ago

This is the worst possible answer to this conundrum. Blaming the masses is blaming the only people who are constantly “told” to buy.

Consumers are the only ones not to blame here. People make their own choices all the time. Disney movies are bombing and DEInis being blamed. Has that been enough to put Disney out of business? No and it never will.

Christopher8d ago

Disagree. Businesses are able to do what they do because people are bad consumers and don't think critically about purchases. Disney got away with doing shit stuff for years and it's just the last year where people got tired of it. It's not like it didn't work for 5 years or so for Disney to do the things they've done. They'll just move onto another way to get people to see movies and it will be just as bad but more profitable until people wake up and realize it.

TiredGamer8d ago

Consumerism drives business behavior. It's not so much "blaming" as it is observing behavior. The point I'm making is that the direction that games have gone are driven by the spending. Consumers are spending on DLC and they are driving the expectation of more glitz and padded out (lengthier) games. If they continue to pay, they will continue to drive that direction until a threshold is reached that forces a change in behavior.

senorfartcushion8d ago

Corporate advertising is the most powerful force on the planet.

This is N4G for god sake, every day there are arguments between people who are Team Xbox and Team PlayStation because they’ve been convinced that having an identity built on paying money to Sony and Microsoft matters more than having one as individual gamers who can play whatever they want.

And THEN we get to the corporate advertising part: to play whatever you want is to sink MORE into the advertising pits, making it so that you can more than one specific product.

jambola8d ago

ah you're right
they were told to buy it, it's clearly impossible to avoid that
if enough people stopped supporting, it would stop
disney not stopping would only be because enough people didn't stop

victorMaje8d ago

Agreed. I’ve been saying for years, announce you won’t be buying the upcoming game because of the practices of the previous game, then you only have to stick to your guns once, see how quickly things change for the better.

We have to unite in what we shouldn’t purchase.

jambola8d ago

just imagine a world, fifa came out worse, nobody buys the next one until they see proof it's better and stick to it
or games being forced online for single player and nobody buys it
things would change so fast

Greed and greedy people have and always will be the main issue for everything wrong in the world. Everything is a product to be exploited for monetary gain. Even when there are things that could help progress us along for the sake of making our lives easier that thing must be exploited for monetary gains. Anything that tells you otherwise is propaganda to make you complicit.

coolfool8d ago

I've never thought "DEI" (although the way most people use it doesn't match it's real definition) is the problem with games. Good games have continued to be good when they have a diverse cast, and likewise, bad games have continued to be bad. There isn't a credible example I've seen where a diverse cast has been the direct cause of a game being bad.

I subscribed to this not knowing about how some of the proceeds go to St. Judes.

Really cool that some of the money goes there.

Even if people don't subscribe to the mag, it might bring people to the charity.

One of the main charities my wife and I donate to. They help a lot of children and being a parent of 5 children I can’t imagine what those parents go through. I’ll probably get a sub to GI because of St Jude and of course because I love video games.
