What Is The Selling Point Of The Xbox Series X This Fall?

For one console in particular, there’s one question that it needs to answer. Why should people spend $500-600 on an Xbox Series X this fall?

I have an Xbox One X with Game Pass. If I spend, maybe, £500+ for an Xbox Series X there will be no exclusive games for it. I will be able to play some third party games like CoD and AC Valhalla over my Xbox One X. It will be a bit better but is really £500 better? Just ONE exclusive would have helped the cause.

This year has been hard on me financially and I'm not sure yet if I will buy both consoles. What I'm thinking is if I get the PS5 there will at least be Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank and Demon Souls. I can then buy the Series X when the first exclusive like Fable comes out.

This is definitely the issue for me. I like to own all consoles always have done since nes and master system days, but that tradition stopped with xbox one,
tbf i bought one not long after release then sold it, before giving them another chance by managing to get another pretty cheap only to be even more disappointed it. It never got used and the ps4 with its exclusives is what kept me occupied to the point i no longer needed it so i sold it again and have zero regrets. I no longer bother or care about the xbox no more which may sound sad but its all microsofts doing im afraid.

If you buy this thing at launch knowing you're not getting anything you can't get on Xbox One, you're basically buying an Xbox One X *X* that will eventually have its own games.

Assuming there are no other huge games available for launch (we don't know everything yet, if I recall) it would probably be a good idea to delay. I love PS4 and the game delays were at times difficult and frustrating, but I'm always happy to experience these games in their best form.

The decision to delay Halo Infinite is very commendable and I respect them for that. I would strongly advise delaying the Series models until 1 or 2 must have titles come around.

@chris, you dont have to be an xbox fan to appreciate the special feeling of getting new hardware. Its like getting a new car. You have to think, why do people buy new cars when their existing one does the same thing? You get in and drive from place to place but sometimes people just want something new. So... they buy a new car. And with it comes that new car smell and figuring out all the little gizmos and gadgets.

New consoles only come around every 5-7 years, not like cars which are every year. People have their own time frame of when they feel it is right for them to just buy something new. This is that time and I cant wait to drive one of these SX off the lot.

It seems that the ps5 has catered everything with the ease of development in mind and there is probably a reason almost all next gen 3rd party gameplay has been shown on the ps5 to this point. RTX 2060 - 2070 laptops run around $1000 right now. In less than a year, you'll be able to get one for $800 and it will perform on the same level as Series X and run Gamepass and every Xbox game for the next 7 to 10 years.

Don't think so... you can play the same games from Game Pass on your smartphone, Samsung TV with no console attached, PC... xCloud is included, remember. A winners combo can be to pay for a PS5 with exclusives and get that 1$ Game Pass for the games that you want to play, so you can have the best of both worlds... and, when the promo is finished, you only need to pay 1$ again for another promotion, with a new account. If you want your achievements, link it to your old one and... bingo, Game Pass cheap, legal and everywhere.

Nah. Don’t like Xbox currently so why would I wanna PC pretty much same thing to play the games that don’t interest me hence I sold my Xbox S after 4 months this gen. I’m not about resolutions or upgrading my hardware every 12-18 months I’m about games and currently it’s Sony and Nintendo (ok Nintendo are MIA currently but they will be brewing up something, Pikmin3 and BOTW2 for starters) hence all Sony games are being lapped up on PC 2-3 years after launch. you may joke about it but honestly Gamepass is absolutely the best value in gaming so far. hundreds of games you can just download and play for $5? can Sony match that deal? They haven't so far, but I hope they do. xbox has two really strong features going for it that will make it successful for the long term: 1) full Backwards compatibility of xbox games library which is really nice out of the box, and 2) gamepass which is as mentioned above, is amazing value for us.

now I personally won't be getting xbox series x because I have a really great gaming PC and gamepass, so all xbox first party titles, I will get from day 1 on GP, which is awesome. But I do wish the console games like NieR or KH3 could be included for PC gamepass too, because I can at least plug in controller to make it work.

Yes, you can argue about the exclusivity, who developed the games, and who published them, but they were all MS bannered and funded games so it doesn't look like content is much of a problem this past year of releases. Also, what I like about this list is that it is diverse. It is not just shooter games or action-adventure games It is a simulator, a turn based RTS, a platformer, a dungeon crawler, a RPG, and a MP brawler.

Just as people are unfairly living in the past and missing what Sony has done to improve PSNow, I think a lot of people are living in the past about MS first party games.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales has ray tracing, so you are incorrect in saying it could run on PS4, nice try though. Selling points for the Series X are also selling points for other platforms. Whether it’s next gen games like The Medium and Scorn that can also be played on PC, or cross gen titles that are also coming to XB1, or next gen multiplats which are coming to PS5. There really isn’t a single game that requires a Series X to play, for better or worse.

That logic is dumb, and can be applied to any game. Take out ray tracing, lower the resolution, lower the frames, use lower res textures, etc. and BAAM any next gen game is now a PS3/Xbox 360 game. Wait, let’s take out more features and make them PS2/OG Xbox games. The purpose of a next gen game is to utilize features not possible in prior generations. In the case of Spider-Man, it’s utilizing ray tracing and the SSD of the PS5 among other things, in order to enhance the experience.

Spider_man doesn't look any better than the previous one with the exception of the ray tracing.
You are the one making an obscure argument. Current gen wouldn't work like that with ps3/360 or the ps2. We're going from x86 to x86. Thats why its possible to turn off ray tracing and make it work on a ps4. It doesn't need the ssd to work its the same exact game design as the previous one. It only needs the ssd to make the fast travel fast.
The new consoles and current ones are just mildly custom PC's and due to that fact they have the scalability of a pc.
By your logic pc gamers would have to upgrade their rigs every 8 months instead of every few years.
Make what ever excuses you want, delude yourself all you need, but for anything other than graphics and frame rates the need for both next gen games really isn't there yet as far as game design with the exception of ratchet and clank and the medium

So playing devil's advocate, if I'm a die-hard Xbox fan and a vested interest in my Xbox library and I want the best Xbox available then well, there it is. Not sure anyone needs more of a reason in that case.

But that is anecdotal. Outside of the true believers, the question is has Microsoft done enough with Xbox Series X to sway a significant number of the approx. 100+ million PS gamers to jump ship and join Team Xbox? I think the answer there is a resounding "No". Do we really think having the more powerful console and Game Pass are the answers? Reminder: Microsoft has had the more powerful console and Game Pass for three years now and that has changed nothing.

So yeah, the dyed-in-the-wool Xbox fan will probably keep wearing their green warpaint and there is nothing wrong with that. But I think the vast majority of console gamers will continue to play primarily on PlayStation. This gen wasn't Xbox's to win. It was PlayStation's to lose. And nothing suggests to me that they are losing anything.

I found The Witcher series to be seriously clunky in combat. But, this, it looks nice and smooth and it's a pretty true to spirit representation of the PnP RPG brought to video game life.

Edit: I think the one thing I can say that's really good about CDPR is they know how to take a world from books and bring it to life. They did a great job with The Witcher world and they look like they're doing a great job here as well. That's why I'm happy with it, let alone the RPG elements they're making sure to include.

I've always been a PS gamer all 4 generations & I was hoping to finally have a second go to console for next-gen but after seeing both of XB/MS summer showcases I really don't see any need to buy a XBSX or the S. I like AAA exclusive offerings first & foremost when it comes to buying gaming consoles though I saw at least 3 exclusive indie/AA games that I wouldn't mind playing but that's not enough for me to invest in a new XB console. Maybe in 3 years if they start showing off a line up of several interesting original AAA exclusives that I'll say to myself I've got to play those games then I may invest in a XB console. Regardless of what someone picks up, they're not going to be starved for content. Xbox has been criticized for their output this gen, but even if we dont consider first party, people are still going to have plenty of games to play.

The choice of console for most is based on one or two games, and those typically arent the first party games. However, the first party is what may help tip the scale towards one console or another. If someone likes things like uncharted or horizon, then those games will make ps5 more appealing. If they are more into halo or something else MS has to offer, then obviously xbox may be more appealing.

The average gamer in the general market doesnt analyze these things as much as we do. But, the more exposure those exclusive games get, the more people start to think one system is more for them than the other assuming they're on the fence or not that versed in what they have to offer.

That's why we get so many buzz words or marketing trips. It's also why console makers pay obscene amounts of money for exclusive marketing rights or content to really popular games.

I’m an Xbox gamer...

The selling point for me is the potential, it’s gamepass, it’s my rewards points coming forward to pay for games and services, it’s my friends I game with, it’s my entire library of games I like to blow the dust off every once in a while, it’s the investment MS has made into their studios. It’s the power advantage which people talk down like having the best possible version of a game is now not important.

For a Sony gamer thinking about coming over? Probably gamepass and an extensive day 1 library of games to play at a dirt cheap price.

For a hardcore Sony player? Nada can make them budge.

I’m also incentivized to buy a ps5 down the line personally. They make some killer exclusives and although they’re going multiplat to pc now which I saw coming, I’d still prefer console gaming.

You get xbox first for the better running third party games, better backward compatibility, build in backward-compatible enhancements like HDR better framerate, etc & Gamepass.
You can use current elite & regular controllers so no additional costs there.

Plus the biggest game to play when the new consoles launch is Cyberpunk.

MS stopped production on previous generation consoles. If you ever wanted an MS console and didn't get one your motivation is to buy the new generation console because you won't be able to buy anything else. That is the MS strategy. Whereas Sony will continue to support the PS4 (as they did with the PS3 and PS2) for an extended period into the new generation allowing gamers a lower priced alternative to get into console gaming.

I'm always an early adopter of Consoles, I can afford it, I like shiny new things, I will have a second Xbox in the home, so me and my 2 boys dont have to share a screen, One on PC for cross-play games, one on the X and me on the SX. Should be a nice set up.

Any enhancements to UI, speed, layout ect. A new better controller. I like the way the system looks aesthetically.

Not to Mention, we dont exactly know the launch line up for either system.

I think there have been articles about the proposition of getting the PS5 at launch. But in my view, I think it offers a better proposition speficically in regards to a day one purchase at launch. Side by side, (obvisouly the price will be a major deciding factor in which one to get day 1) and assuming they are priced the same, on day 1 the PS5 will offer more in terms of a next gen experience out the gate.

Selling point for me is simple. I love the Xbox franchises. I buy all multiplat games for the Xbox, fine with the OS.

Back compat is very important to me and being able to play my OG Xbox, 360, X1, Enhanced, and Series X games on one station.

Will get a PS5 at some point, love the Nintendo Switch, not into PC gaming at all, so Series X is a day 1 for me, whateva it costs.

When both Xbox One and PS4 were in pre-order phase a bunch of my friends all said they were getting Xbox Ones only because "everyone else was getting one".

They knew the PS4 was going to be better. But they wanted to get the Halo Machine because everyone else in the friend group was getting it.

Yes, they could have coordinated and all bought a PS4 instead. I told them this. But they just shrugged and stuck to their guns.

The Xbox Series One will sell - and I'm certain most of the buyers wouldn't even be able to tell you why they bought it. They don't really know. They have vague notions in their minds of playing Halo with their friends at some point. That, or they've developed an irrational hatred for Sony. That's about it.

Playing it on PC gamepass ..the graphics are gorgeous and gameplay is different, intuitive and fun..

As it stands nothing no exclusives that are a blip on my radar and third party titles are also appearing on PS5. I am looking forward to Spiderman 2 and Horizon 2 and Valhalla. Unless Microsoft has some eye popping exclusives that they have not shown in their poker hand then yes Series X day one but there is nothing. And yes again you need exclusives to draw in the crowd to buy your machine the exclusives make the machine stand out and grab peoples attention. Any console can announce third party titles unless they are a timed exclusive as it stands PS5 day one for me.

To put it simply, there is no singular reason to buy a series x, and even if one likes the collective minor reasonings such as gamepass ultimate, better multiplat performance (theorized btw) and the eventuality of first party games (many of which lately were not great or ran poorly, see Halo MCC, SOD2, Sea of Thieves, and Crackdown 3 which never even eventually became better), those simply cannot justify the risk of taking on a launch system.
The risk simply must come with a substantive reward out of the box, and there just isn't one here.
