Halo 4: Spartan Ops and the Last Time Halo Promised Years of Updates

Microsoft and 343 Industries promised potential years of updates with Halo 4: Spartan Ops. It failed. We should be weary of "platforms."

Part of the issue is you had someone at 343 write these characters and that individual or individuals had no grasp of the Spartan ethos. Someone should take their keyboard away and glue their hands to their foreheads.

Sadly, Palmer did act like a jerk but she was left with little choice. Instead of mature, dedicated Spartans under her command, the only type of troops that would have made it through the Spartan program in the first place, writers created adolescent yokels who acted as if they had just graduated from jump school and received their first assignment to the 82nd Airborne Division. Riding around town drinking their first beer and yelling at women on the street corners. Palmer was forced to act like a babysitter. Such an idiotic lowering of the original idea of the Spartan canon.

Then there is the entire lag issue for aiming and movement for anyone that is not the host, but that is another matter altogether. Great idea, gorgeous cutscenes, ultimately more harmful to HALO than beneficial.

I think they should hire the red vs. Blue writers. I'm not really that well versed on the halo universe, but they seem to at least keep their stories connected to whatever the current game is, or at least reference them a lot. Plus, they write good least for most seasons.

Either that, or just make a red vs blue spin off. I'd probably actually want to play that.

I love RvB and have the Bluray set. But their lean is toward comedy. Staten or better yet Eric Nylund should have advised them. If you look at how Blue Team is portrayed in HALO 5 and how the Chief interacts with Kelly, Linda, and Fred then you see how Spartans should have been characterized in Spartan Ops or the rest of HALO 5 for that matter. Amazing that someone there got it but they failed to transfer that elswhere in the games. Not sure if that individual was on board with them when HALO 4 was built. Or simply look at the whole of HALO Reach. That would have shown them how to do it. Instead its, "Here's the recipe" but someone decided "No thanks. Imma burn this cake on my own."

The other thing I have never understood is why they never, outside of the Elite foray, built a true Multiplayer that mirrored the HALO universe. There would be something wholly satisfying taking down Spartans as a Grunt.

They could probably write a dramatic story. I just think they usually do good stories, and have good character development. Even characters that are parodies of a caboose, have good character development.

It probably wont happen, I just thought I'd bring it up to make conversation.

I loved Spartan Ops. All 343 i. would have had to do is say "We're not seeing the kind of engament we're looking for regarding Spartan Ops so we've shifted focus to our next project" instead of pulling a Valve and literally never addressing the fact that they stated more seasons were on the way yet a decade later here we are with no season 2.

Agreed we should be wary, but the headline is factually incorrect.

The ‘last time’ they promised updates for years was in Halo 5, which they actually delivered on time every/most months for a good few years
