Obsidian is working on something that isn't Avowed or Grounded

It's being directed by studio design boss Josh Sawyer.

ColdSin1786d ago (Edited 1786d ago )

Nope, he mentioned that it is a small game. Another team is working on Outer Worlds 2 (the team of Tim Cain and Boyarsky).

Basically, there are 4 projects that Obsidian are working on: Grounded, Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, and Sawyer's project.

TheProblem1786d ago (Edited 1786d ago )

Sounds like they are now just making lots of small AA games

ThinkThink1786d ago

Sounds more like a 50/50 split to me with the two big teams working on outerworlds 2 and Avowed while the 2 smaller teams work on grounded and the other unannounced game. I feel like that's a good balance.

ElementX1786d ago (Edited 1786d ago )

In the past decade they have mostly made top-down RPGs like Pillars, Tyranny, etc. They aren't really a AAA studio. They made Fallout New Vegas, KOTOR, Outer Worlds, South Park, but those larger budget games aren't their usual projects.

Ausbo1786d ago

Sounds like you have some educating to do. Avowed is not AA.

jairusmonillas1786d ago

gamepass quality are like A and very few AA games. F2P quality games.

MadLad1785d ago

Based on what?
They literally just announced that they are working on a large scale, open world RPG based in the Pillars universe.
They have a large team working on the sequel to Outer Worlds, which will have a much larger budget than the original game.

Their smaller teams are working on things as well. They may be working on smaller projects, but that's just one part of the team. They have two large projects in the works. You saying they're only working on small projects is you saying you don't care enough to actually look at what their development pipeline looks like.

3 games from one studio at the same time. Sounds like not enough focus.

RememberThe3571786d ago (Edited 1786d ago )

You might not be wrong, but from interviews I've seen these guys have a lot of pent up ideas and things they couldn't do over the years because they just didn't have the backing. To me this just seems like they're taking advantage of the resources MS brings.

spicelicka1786d ago

Grounded is from a team of like 10 people, Outer Worlds is successful and it only makes sense to have a team dedicated to supporting to it. Both of these teams are pretty much done with their projects since Outer Worlds DLC comes out like next month. There is no reason to assume they're working on 3 big projects at the exact same time and distributing focus. This project sounds like it's still in the concept stage, it's likely that it won't even start until Outer Worlds/ Grounded are done with. Which means 2 big projects at one time, which isn't a big deal if the studio is large enough.

NVMGaiden1786d ago

Sony Santa Monica was in production of 8 games from 2012-some unspecified year. This isn't rare it just takes three things. Large staffs, crunch, and multiple people capable of leading teams. Given the fact that Outer Worlds and Grounded are both certified successes, and even Pillars II is a good game albeit moderately successful, I'd say regardless of focus its working.

CaptainHenry9161786d ago (Edited 1786d ago )

Avowed looks like a Elders Scrolls clone at the moment. Going to do a wait and see approach with this game. My new PC gpu will be ready for this game.

Sayai jin1786d ago

Obsidian mafe a better Fallout than Bethesda. I'll let them dp their thing.

This are just for the sake of game pass fillers. They are cranking out shovelware games. Games that easy to produced for a fraction of development time, financial cost and other resources.

DeadManMMX1786d ago

The way you guys just assume this kind of crap just because. Grounded is actually pretty damn good. They are doing it because they have to creative freedom and budget to do it for the first time.

Pancit_Canton1786d ago

It's that kind of standard I expect from you guys. It's the main reason why Microsoft keeps screwing the Xbox fanboys. They never learned because they think they are giving you guys a huge favor.

Pancit_Canton1786d ago (Edited 1786d ago )

It seems like you are the one who is crying deep inside.

RamRod881786d ago

You're right. Tears of joy knowing Obsidian is able to make the games they want without being held back.

Tacoboto1786d ago

Pancit, your comment history is nothing but negativity and hate for Xbox. Stop involving yourself so much in something that is so clearly upsetting you.

RememberThe3571786d ago

Dude Obsidian is a legit developer, this isn't some punk start up pumping out mobile games. I wasn't impressed with what MS showed a couple weeks ago but if you think Obsidian is gonna start pumping out crap games, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Pancit_Canton1786d ago

Sorry dude. I think Obsidian is an overrated developer. Most their games recieved a mediorce reception and not a system seller

RememberThe3571786d ago

So you just came in here to talk sh!t? GTFO what a waste.

MadLad1786d ago

@Pancit

"Most of their games received a mediocre reception"

Kotor 2, NWN 2, New Vegas, Pillars 1 and 2, Tyranny, South Park, and Outer Worlds says hi.
Even their less than stellar releases, like Alpha Protocol, did a lot of things right and are viewed as cult classics.

Keep being a hater though.

343_Guilty_Spark1786d ago

Grounded is a good game though.

MadLad1786d ago

BS.

Obsidian is a fantastic studio. Grounded is proving a solid title. They're currently developing an Elder Scrolls-esque experience based in their own Pillars universe.
They have a team working on additional content for, and a sequel to, Outer Worlds, which was both critically, and financially, successful.

Nothing seen from these guys has been "shovelware". Prior to, or after, MS's acquisition.
Just because you say things, that doesn't make it true.

Dumb take on your part.

Fantangoooo1786d ago

Them Tears... lol
Obsidian is an amazing developer...Grounded wasnt even on my radar but i was surprised how fun it is ... Avowed is gonna be EPIC.. so anything these guys make is gold.

Rematch director says there’s “room for more than one take of football”

In an industry with countless FIFAs, sorry EA Sports FCs, Sloclap’s Rematch is a brilliant arcade football game that feels incredibly unique. Putting players in the shoes of an individual player, the new multiplayer game is essentially Rocket League without the rockets and cars… it’s football.

It Shouldn't Take Expedition 33's Success to Remind Square Enix That Turn-Based Still Sells

TNS: Expedition 33 was the wake-up call Square Enix needed, telling it turn-based RPGs are still popular, but that shouldn't have been the case.

True, but if it does get it through their thick skulls, then that works.

Although, the Dragon Quest 1 + 2 HD remakes will be turn-based and (the worst kept secret) Final Fantasy IX remake should be turn-based I would imagine. Let's see if any newer games go turn-based too.

thorstein8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

DQIII HD Remake was turned based and very successful. Then there was a really obscure turn based game came Balder's Gate 3. I heard it might have done well.

Profchaos4h ago

I wouldn't be shocked if they switched ff to the vii remake combat system

PapaBop50m ago

It won't get through to them though, despite E33's success, they still won't risk going fully turn based for their big budget projects simply because they are still in the mindset that it needs to be action combat to appeal to the mainstream audience. I hope I'm wrong but don't underestimate just how stubborn Japanese execs can be

DivineHand12511h ago

While it is true that Sqaure Enix has moved away from turn based games compared to how they were in the past, there is a good reason for it.

Older gamers will know this but during the ps2 era, we were flooded with turned based games from Japanese studios and this created a form of fatigue back then going into the next generation.

When Square released FF13, they received heavy criticism for making the game turned based like every other FF game and not doing enough to innovate. This is why they made FF15, FF7 Remake and FF16 have real time combat. It gave the series a fresh spin and has brought in new fans to the series.

I personally would be happy with either turned based FF or the real-time combat version we see today.

Shane Kim10h ago

Remake and Rebirth have "turn based" if you set it in the settings.

Lexreborn27h ago

Dang wish I saw your post before I made mine because we definitely feel the same way lol

Profchaos4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Yeah hit the nail on the head but its like ww2 games we get hundreds of them then a decade of nothing and people start missing them i think we're going to start seeing them return

Claire, dragon quest even yakuza have seen turn based return

andy8510h ago

Only need to look at their own game DQ 11 approaching 10 million to show there's a market. And that's not as big of a name as FF

Tacoboto10h ago

Another article about Expedition 33 and Square Enix and turn-based games? This is starting to sound like propaganda.

The game didn't sell because it's a turn-based game; it sold and is enjoyed because it's a really freaking good game that released completed at a good price without gamer drama attached to it. No Mtx, no wait-until-it's-patched, minimal bloat, a self-contained story, no multiplatform BS. Just a solid original game that absolutely nails what it intended to do.

Redemption-649h ago

I was just about to say the same thing.

anast9h ago

This comment should have a 100 upvotes, at least.

CrimsonWing699h ago

Maybe try actually listening to the fans who have supported the series for decades. This habit of ignoring your core audience just to chase people who were never interested in Final Fantasy in the first place makes no sense. And when that approach fails, doubling down on it is beyond baffling.

The battle system has never been the main reason non-FF or non-JRPG players stayed away. Gutting the series’ identity to chase a broader market doesn’t attract new players. It just alienates the loyal ones.

Keep going down this road and we’ll end up with Final Fantasy Fortnite abomination or a F2P Battle Royale game.. Oh wait…
