PS3 games are currently the cheapest they'll ever be. But some will start to increase in value before others. Here are a few to pick up right now.
I think 3D Dot Game Heroes is one of those games that probably didn't have a lot of copies made. I have a copy, and I'm not getting rid of it because of the potential rarity.
3D Dot Game Heroes is one of the main reasons I want PS5 to have PS3 BC, still waiting to replay that hidden From Soft gem
Sadly, I think the PS3's architecture won't allow for PS3 BC. Of course, we still don't know whether they've done anything to solve that issue to be possible on PS5. I have contemplated hooking my PS3 back up many times to get the plat for that game. I got most of the way there, but gave up probably because there was another game that released that I wanted to play. I have to go back, and look at the trophy list to see how annoying it would be to actually finish it off.
The PS5 will have PS4 BC only. The reason I still have my PS3 & then there's PS Now to play some PS3 titles.
I find it laughable when people think PS3 back compats is not possible on PS5. On one hand Sony has the greatest engineers that are called geniuses. But these so called geniuses can't make an emulator work which a tiny team of software engineers surviving on patreon can? Seriously? You can play Demons soul at 4K 60 on rpcs3.
@umair_s51: that's a lot of logical fallacy in your comment and proof you don't understand memory management on the cell architecture that makes each game unique and not beholden to a single emulator built around specific games that still run really crappy and are bug-ridden on PC utilizing CPUs more powerful than the ones on PS5/XSX.
@chris go ahead Mr logic and prove you money's worth. Please enlighten us with how what I said is illogical. Lol
***go ahead Mr logic and prove you money's worth. Please enlighten us with how what I said is illogical. Lol*** Because your proof is buggy, poorly running game on an emulator aimed at those specific games. Why are they aimed at specific games? Because the memory management for games developed for the cell architecture have specific memory management code that has to be coded for specifically in emulation and isn't a thing you can just emulate broadly. For example, look up how they utilized low-level programming in God of War 3 for exact and specific memory management just for that game that isn't replicated elsewhere. Emulation of BC games, much like how MS had done it on the XBO with 360 games, utilizes encapsulation to mimic the environment for managing the processing of the game. Doing this for PS3 would require, for almost every game, specific code to be imparted to account for the specific means in which memory is managed, where, and how. This was the problem with the cell architecture, it required such a low level of control in memory, made it really hard to develop for, and resulted in many complaints from developers or just underperforming third-party games in general (look at Bayonetta, Mass Effect Series, Red Dead Redemption, and so many more). So, saying they've got genius engineers doesn't matter. Each game will need to be reviewed and specifically coded for each specific use of memory management throughout the game. That's thousands or more of instances of possible memory differences throughout a single game. That's hundreds of hours to get a single game to work, much like the people you are citing for Demon's Souls who have been working on emulation for almost a decade now. There ya go, that's why you're being illogical because you don't understand the level of work to manage memory with the cell architecture.
It's a game that if they atleast added on PS Now I'd be okay as the latency in a game like that wouldn't even be noticeable. I own the PS3 game and a PS3, but my ps3 isn't normally plugged in
@chris Rpcs3 is not my proof. So you are contradicting your self. Don't worry I'll tell you the right answer. You can say it is a proof of concept. Lol. Nice try though man, nice try.
@razzle you are correct, sir
@Elda will our PS4 digital libraries work on the PS5?
***Over 50% of PS3 games look and play really well on RPCS3, and that was created by some random dudes for fun.*** Not true. The designation is playable with no game breaking glitches, but they do not run really well (worse than on ps3) and they still have tons of bugs, just not ones that don't prevent completion of the game even though most of them do involve have crashes and similar issues. And this is after over a decade of work by a lot of great programmers. And that leaves half that can't run. And we need to stop it with the idea that it's "just two guys" when their site outlines way more contributors as well as those not even mentioned from GitHub. ***Rpcs3 is not my proof. So you are contradicting your self. Don't worry I'll tell you the right answer. You can say it is a proof of concept. Lol.*** So you're just here to troll?
@chris man seriously you are still arguing. The lead dev on Rpcs3 makes a pathetic $3000 a month gross. And they have 1000+ games that are playable a lot of them are 4K. You seriously believe that Cerny teams can't handily beat them with the financial backing of Trillion dollar company who wrote the architecture in the first place? The cell is 15 years old. Unless you too are paid by Sony? Hahaha.i think I know what is going on. Nice try Mr logic.
I still have 3d dot game heroes and Silent Hill homecoming.
***The lead dev on Rpcs3 makes a pathetic $3000 a month gross. And they have 1000+ games that are playable a lot of them are 4K. You seriously believe that Cerny teams can't handily beat them with the financial backing of Trillion dollar company who wrote the architecture in the first place? *** You've gotta be trolling now. 1. His wage has nothing to do with his knowledge of coding. Anyone building this sort of thing is a talented engineer. 2. They don't have 1000+ PS3 games that are "playable" and a lot of them are not "at 4k" but playable at that much like how I can play 720p games on my 4k TV. 3. I DO NOT think that Cerny will do anything of this sort. His job is obvious in the role of architect and business planning with new technology. 4. It would, again, take them tons of time and cash to make this happen, no matter how little you understand it. You're making completely false claims of how well the emulator does and completely ignoring that the people working on it are just as talented as the people they would have and have only gotten almost entirely cross-platform games with the least amount of memory complications that were developed on engines that have similarities after over a decade. 5. Sony is not a trillion dollar company. Even then, PlaySation, a division within Sony, is where this cost would come from, and do you honestly think Sony sees profit in the high cost it would take to do this let alone the fact that it is literally cheaper for them to hire out a company to make PS4 ports of the games? Do you not get that? They could have emulated these games and resold them, but it's cheaper for them to completely port them over. That should tell you everything about how much it would cost to emulate the PS3 and how well it would work at this time. 6. If I worked for Sony, they wouldn't have as shitty databases as they have for their storefront. Talk about an area they need to invest more into.
I have all the games in that picture heh.
I have all the games listed in the article :) Weird how games that get panned seem to get the highest collectors value.
PS3 games are becoming collector's items. That make anyone else feel old? Also, Silent Hill needs a new entry on PS5 at some point
You realize Konami owns Silent hill?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but my brain isn't making the connection.
You realize Konami doesn’t have a console of its own? You also realize the the thumbnail has a PS3 Silent Hill game in it thus connecting to the comment?
not at all. I still have my NES and a bunch of games. PS, PS2, PS3, and some various other consoles and games. PS3 games becoming collectors items doesn't make me feel old in the slightest. though I wish I'd have kept more of my PS, PS1, PS2 and Gamecube games. I had a bad habit of selling off some eventually because I had far to many.
Well, I have one of them.
I would add MGS4, Heavenly Sword & Folklore.
Thank you for mentioning Folklore 👍
Every time I find myself in a place that sells second hand games I check for Folklore
Puppeteer deserves some love in this conversation.
LoveSpuds1h ago Puppeteer deserves some love in this conversation.*** Was it actually released as a hardcopy and not PSN only?? Genuine question, as I have the majority of exclusives on Bluray, but I only have Puppeteer on HDD.
@hectorius I'm not sure about the US, but I have an physical UK copy :)
Yup, I am looking at my copy on the shelf right now...i feel very lucky, i adore this game. (In the UK too, btw).
Thank you gentlemen, I'm in the UK too.. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
I have all 3 of those and Folklore is absolutely underrated as hell. Such a great game.
I have a few of those on 360.
I'd pay a good amount for the Fallout 3 Survival Edition.
I do have quite a few of the more rare PS3 games, but I still regret selling Afrika. Twice. -_- I also owned Rule of Rose on PS2 at one point. I feel like an idiot.
Definitely recommend doing it now. Especially for both PS3 and 360. Just got my consoles in the mail. Managed to grab 3D Dot Game Heroes, Blur (360), NFSMW (2005,360). Getting a back compat phat PS3 cechE01 and phat 360 elite was a pain but well worth the high price. Especially with the pandemic, now is the time to collect 7th gen games.
Don't own any of these. My rarest PS3 games are Buzz! Quiz TV and The Orange Box. Hopefully they're worth something someday, but I doubt it. Either way I got them for cheap at a pawn shop.
Orange Box is still sold for a decent buck everywhere. I have it on PS3.
I have all of those game in the pic on PS3. I lost half of my collection when I moved, but I held on to my fav PS3 games thank goodness.
I've got two of these, Lord of Shadows and Splatterhouse. After I've finished The Last Of Us II and Ghost of Tsushima, I might plug in my PS3 and get around to finishing Splatterhouse. I'm surprised it didn't get a PC port though.
I finally just unplugged my PS3 a couple weeks ago. After getting the Platinum in Ghost I thought dam, maybe a little early. I should go back and Platinum Sly 2 and 3 so I have all Sucker punch games Platinums.
Even with my backlog of PS4 games, I still pull out the PS3 from time to time and play old favorites. I have a backlog on PS3 too but I'm giving the PS4 games my priority
I have most of PS3 collection in boxes
Castlevania:LOS I still like that game! I have the special edition case. It is one of my favorites.
Good game, but a true Castlevania game it is not.
How so? It has to be 2D side scrolling to be a true "Castlevania" game? Is that what you say about the new God of War?
No,it's not what I'm saying. I own God of War PS4 and, even though everything has been drastically revamped, you can still play it pretty much like past entries and it's still very good, better even in terms of script. Castlevania Lord of Shadows, however, has pretty much nothing from the original games, no sub-weapons (holy water, cross, etc), no candles that give you hearts, not the same mood at all, not the same score at all, it's just a clone of God of War/Devil May Cry/Bayonetta/Onimusha/etc. It's Castlevania only by name. Again, it's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. It's not original but it's not bad. But it's no Castlevania.
i have castlevania, homecoming, downpour. I also think siren is becoming rare these days
I have 4 sealed copies of the first run of Class of Heroes 2G on PS3. They were pre order only from Monkey Paw and have their own serial number
Which variants did you get? I got A and B :)
Their tucked away in my closet. I think it was an A, 2 B’s and a C. Another collector speculated each letter was a run of 1000, but not exactly sure
It is hard to find info on the run, but there were different quantities of each variant printed, i'll see if I can find it :)
Ok thanks. The same collector said they did a second run, which he grabbed 2 then. But I jumped at the opportunity to grab 4 of the first run. Hopefully they will spike in collector value. I paid $40 each copy and they are worth about $60 now. I forget the name of the site that shows game values on the condition. But all of mine are sealed. It’s anyones guess to how many are still sealed. Seen some on eBay people re-seal and try to sell it as a new copy, but they lack the sticker with the serial #. Best to keep them tucked away for a decade or so and watch the market
From what I can find, it's 500/1000/1500 I'm not sure if that's A B C or C B A D Variant had 2-3000 (not exactly sure how many) and was a VGP exclusive
Obviously only gone high because of the pandemic, many buying during lockdown to the point they are out of stock... hardly anyone selling. The games that will become valuable are the ones with DLC on disc.
Well glad that I already owned both LOS games :)
I have lords of shadows and 3D dot game heroes on my collection
I have 3 of them. Silent Hill, Splatterhouse and Castlevania I tried everything to get Hakuna Matata (afrika) and Folklore except for pay a small mortgage I've also got the Asian original Demon Souls as well as its western release with the art book and Dark Souls with the Art Book and soundtrack. I love those and have them in a cabinet on show
I own 3D Dot Heroes sealed. Its still in my back log, dang it, I've always meant to play it. But now a sealed copy will be worth a lot, so I'll play the game through other means.
I have a sealed copy of 3D Dot Game Heroes, and a sealed copy of Demons Souls - Black Phantom Edition.
No thanks, I haven't even turned my PS3 on for close to 3 years now
I bought 3D Dot Game Heroes day one so I still have that and I got Castlevania Lord of Shadows. That's the only ones I have mentioned in this article.
Forget the PS3, try the Vita. Years of being bashed by the media and strong focus on niche games means low supply and strong demand. Every game and hardware piece is basically at collectors level pricing. Check it out on Ebay.
I have Demon Souls Black Phantom, didn't know it had any value until news of the remaster.
I am pleased to see a bunch of my collection in this list, pleasantly surprised to see how much games like Afrika are selling for. Shame I am too attached to my collection to sell stuff, I could make a killing 😁
Demon Souls HK version. Way before it was released outside asia. What do you guys think about this one being a rare?
I bought SH Downpour fairly cheap on PS3 glad it was cheap the game literally sucks Splatterhouse I have owned since day one same with Odin Sphere. I know Ar Tonelico 3 and Ar Nosurge have gone up in price.
