PS3 Games to Collect Now (Prices are Already Rising)

PS3 games are currently the cheapest they'll ever be. But some will start to increase in value before others. Here are a few to pick up right now.

I think 3D Dot Game Heroes is one of those games that probably didn't have a lot of copies made. I have a copy, and I'm not getting rid of it because of the potential rarity.

3D Dot Game Heroes is one of the main reasons I want PS5 to have PS3 BC, still waiting to replay that hidden From Soft gem

ziggurcat49d ago

Sadly, I think the PS3's architecture won't allow for PS3 BC. Of course, we still don't know whether they've done anything to solve that issue to be possible on PS5.

I have contemplated hooking my PS3 back up many times to get the plat for that game. I got most of the way there, but gave up probably because there was another game that released that I wanted to play. I have to go back, and look at the trophy list to see how annoying it would be to actually finish it off.

Elda49d ago

The PS5 will have PS4 BC only. The reason I still have my PS3 & then there's PS Now to play some PS3 titles.

umair_s5149d ago (Edited 49d ago )

I find it laughable when people think PS3 back compats is not possible on PS5. On one hand Sony has the greatest engineers that are called geniuses. But these so called geniuses can't make an emulator work which a tiny team of software engineers surviving on patreon can? Seriously? You can play Demons soul at 4K 60 on rpcs3.

Christopher49d ago

@umair_s51: that's a lot of logical fallacy in your comment and proof you don't understand memory management on the cell architecture that makes each game unique and not beholden to a single emulator built around specific games that still run really crappy and are bug-ridden on PC utilizing CPUs more powerful than the ones on PS5/XSX.

umair_s5149d ago

@chris go ahead Mr logic and prove you money's worth. Please enlighten us with how what I said is illogical. Lol

Christopher49d ago

***go ahead Mr logic and prove you money's worth. Please enlighten us with how what I said is illogical. Lol***

Because your proof is buggy, poorly running game on an emulator aimed at those specific games.

Why are they aimed at specific games? Because the memory management for games developed for the cell architecture have specific memory management code that has to be coded for specifically in emulation and isn't a thing you can just emulate broadly.

For example, look up how they utilized low-level programming in God of War 3 for exact and specific memory management just for that game that isn't replicated elsewhere.

Emulation of BC games, much like how MS had done it on the XBO with 360 games, utilizes encapsulation to mimic the environment for managing the processing of the game. Doing this for PS3 would require, for almost every game, specific code to be imparted to account for the specific means in which memory is managed, where, and how.

This was the problem with the cell architecture, it required such a low level of control in memory, made it really hard to develop for, and resulted in many complaints from developers or just underperforming third-party games in general (look at Bayonetta, Mass Effect Series, Red Dead Redemption, and so many more).

So, saying they've got genius engineers doesn't matter. Each game will need to be reviewed and specifically coded for each specific use of memory management throughout the game. That's thousands or more of instances of possible memory differences throughout a single game. That's hundreds of hours to get a single game to work, much like the people you are citing for Demon's Souls who have been working on emulation for almost a decade now.

There ya go, that's why you're being illogical because you don't understand the level of work to manage memory with the cell architecture.

It's a game that if they atleast added on PS Now I'd be okay as the latency in a game like that wouldn't even be noticeable. I own the PS3 game and a PS3, but my ps3 isn't normally plugged in

umair_s5149d ago (Edited 49d ago )

@chris Rpcs3 is not my proof. So you are contradicting your self. Don't worry I'll tell you the right answer. You can say it is a proof of concept. Lol.

Nice try though man, nice try.

umair_s5149d ago

@razzle you are correct, sir

anast49d ago

@Elda will our PS4 digital libraries work on the PS5?

Christopher49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

***Over 50% of PS3 games look and play really well on RPCS3, and that was created by some random dudes for fun.***

Not true. The designation is playable with no game breaking glitches, but they do not run really well (worse than on ps3) and they still have tons of bugs, just not ones that don't prevent completion of the game even though most of them do involve have crashes and similar issues. And this is after over a decade of work by a lot of great programmers.

And that leaves half that can't run.

And we need to stop it with the idea that it's "just two guys" when their site outlines way more contributors as well as those not even mentioned from GitHub.

***Rpcs3 is not my proof. So you are contradicting your self. Don't worry I'll tell you the right answer. You can say it is a proof of concept. Lol.***

So you're just here to troll?

umair_s5149d ago (Edited 49d ago )

@chris man seriously you are still arguing. The lead dev on Rpcs3 makes a pathetic $3000 a month gross. And they have 1000+ games that are playable a lot of them are 4K. You seriously believe that Cerny teams can't handily beat them with the financial backing of Trillion dollar company who wrote the architecture in the first place? The cell is 15 years old.

Unless you too are paid by Sony? Hahaha.i think I know what is going on. Nice try Mr logic.

bouzebbal48d ago

I still have 3d dot game heroes and Silent Hill homecoming.

You've gotta be trolling now.

1. His wage has nothing to do with his knowledge of coding. Anyone building this sort of thing is a talented engineer.

2. They don't have 1000+ PS3 games that are "playable" and a lot of them are not "at 4k" but playable at that much like how I can play 720p games on my 4k TV.

3. I DO NOT think that Cerny will do anything of this sort. His job is obvious in the role of architect and business planning with new technology.

4. It would, again, take them tons of time and cash to make this happen, no matter how little you understand it. You're making completely false claims of how well the emulator does and completely ignoring that the people working on it are just as talented as the people they would have and have only gotten almost entirely cross-platform games with the least amount of memory complications that were developed on engines that have similarities after over a decade.

5. Sony is not a trillion dollar company. Even then, PlaySation, a division within Sony, is where this cost would come from, and do you honestly think Sony sees profit in the high cost it would take to do this let alone the fact that it is literally cheaper for them to hire out a company to make PS4 ports of the games? Do you not get that? They could have emulated these games and resold them, but it's cheaper for them to completely port them over. That should tell you everything about how much it would cost to emulate the PS3 and how well it would work at this time.

6. If I worked for Sony, they wouldn't have as shitty databases as they have for their storefront. Talk about an area they need to invest more into.

I have all the games in that picture heh.

Dark_Overlord49d ago

I have all the games listed in the article :) Weird how games that get panned seem to get the highest collectors value.

Jiub50d ago

PS3 games are becoming collector's items. That make anyone else feel old? Also, Silent Hill needs a new entry on PS5 at some point

rataranian49d ago

You realize Konami owns Silent hill?

Jiub49d ago

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but my brain isn't making the connection.

BrainSyphoned49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

You realize Konami doesn’t have a console of its own?

You also realize the the thumbnail has a PS3 Silent Hill game in it thus connecting to the comment?

Seraphim49d ago

not at all. I still have my NES and a bunch of games. PS, PS2, PS3, and some various other consoles and games. PS3 games becoming collectors items doesn't make me feel old in the slightest. though I wish I'd have kept more of my PS, PS1, PS2 and Gamecube games. I had a bad habit of selling off some eventually because I had far to many.

dumahim49d ago

Well, I have one of them.

Z50149d ago

I would add MGS4, Heavenly Sword & Folklore.

Applejack49d ago

Thank you for mentioning Folklore 👍

monkey60249d ago

Every time I find myself in a place that sells second hand games I check for Folklore

LoveSpuds49d ago

Puppeteer deserves some love in this conversation.

Was it actually released as a hardcopy and not PSN only?? Genuine question, as I have the majority of exclusives on Bluray, but I only have Puppeteer on HDD.

Dark_Overlord49d ago

@hectorius

I'm not sure about the US, but I have an physical UK copy :)

LoveSpuds49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

Yup, I am looking at my copy on the shelf right now...i feel very lucky, i adore this game. (In the UK too, btw).

hectorius49d ago

Thank you gentlemen, I'm in the UK too.. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
