5 million more. In just one country. Assuming those numbers are accurate that's crazy

JEECE1368d ago (Edited 1368d ago )

Actually it's kind of a testament to Xbox's durable popularity in the US. Considering only the base consoles (since those are what have been available since day one, and they are still what most people buy), PS4 is better in every way than Xbox One, most notably in terms of exclusive games. Yet still, despite getting outsold more than 2:1 worldwide, Xbox is not that far beyond in the crucial US market. Casuals and people who don't play games at all will refer to all video games as "playing Xbox" here, in the same way they would have called all video game consoles "a Nintendo" in the mid 90s, which may seem like a silly thing to consider, but I think is a good indication of how well a company is doing in terms of "mind share."

Ron_Danger1368d ago (Edited 1368d ago )

This comment would apply if it was 2010... no one talks that way anymore 😂

stuna11368d ago

Not disagreeing with what you're saying, but if you put this in context for comparison sake. Looking at last gens 360 era the Xbox hasn't even come close to what 360 supposedly sold the previous generation! Therefore taking Mind shares, Hardware sales and even Software sales into account, Microsoft has lost out on all accounts. Especially considering the Xbox 360 had a sizable lead of almost 9 million consoles at one point last generation in just the U.S alone.

crazyCoconuts1368d ago

I think there's truth to this in the states. Some of my older (my age lol) casual friends use "Xbox" in that way. A good amount of sitcoms have product placement with Xbox featured, and product placement in US stores is often better for Xbox. I don't know how much of the mind share is "Made in the USA" thinking vs. vestiges of the 360 era vs. strong domestic marketing - maybe a combination. Parents that aren't gamers will also typically get the upgrade for the same brand because it's easy, so that probably plays a part as well. This should be a home field advantage for Xbox, like Japan is home fields for the other two.

Sunny_D1368d ago

Although I agree Americans still have a soft spot for Xbox. I don’t really hear anyone saying that they’re playing games on their Xbox now. I hear them saying that they’re going to play PS4. Even casuals who usually play NBA 2K and Madden play on PS4.

JEECE1368d ago

@Ron_Danger
You'd think they wouldn't, but unfortunately they do. I know people who will say "do you play Xbox?" And what they mean is "do you play video games" I just want to shake them and be like "PlayStation has been a massive brand for 25 years, stop being ignorant." It's like how people will call all shooters Call of Duty.

@stuna1
I never said XONE did as well as 360. I'm just saying it retained enough popularity that the US wasn't a complete blowout like the worldwide numbers are.

@crazyCoconuts
Yeah shows are another good example. The "kid" or teenager in shows always has an Xbox.

RauLeCreuset1368d ago

I don't recall ever once hearing anyone talking about "playing Xbox" that way prior to this post. I'm sure some have, but I highly doubt it's the casual expression you're making it out to be.

JEECE1368d ago

@RauLeCreuset
Consider yourself lucky; it's super annoying. I'm willing to accept that it could largely be a generational or regional thing, or possibly a combination of the two.

Who cares I still love my Xbox
Stuna1 "360 Supposedly sold" hahaha That's a good one. They ended with a sizable lead in the U.S. 49 million to 29 million. Microsoft really failed to capitalize on the success of the 360, but I still love my Xbox more and play it more than my pro

stuna11368d ago

Good for you as far as playing on your Xbox, but your comment just Made the Xbox look that much worse!

DEEHULK881368d ago

Stuna1 How can my comment make things look worse? I said what is already known which is the xbox one team screwed up. Wasn't the same team as the one that launched 360. I've always said that Sony always capitalized off of others mistakes(Nintendo did cartridges, Saturn's early May US launch that alienated 3rd parties like EA), they just did it again with xbo hardware decisions and Don Mattrick at the helm and I give them credit for that. I will get the systems just to have but I can never be a diehard playstation fan.

East76lands1368d ago

Huge momentum going into the next generation.

JesusBuiltmyHotrod1368d ago

It's actually close in the US...it is outside the US were Xbox gets stomped, in some countries like Spain it is 7:1 or greater in favour of PS4.

Muzikguy1367d ago (Edited 1367d ago )

The fact it's anywhere close amazes me honestly

TheKingKratos1368d ago

No doubt that's The last of us 2 effect

With high quality exclusives, the PS4 is a runaway success.

anast1368d ago

MS didn't do any favors for the Xbox one. It's an inferior gaming machine, by design believe it or not.

Elda1368d ago (Edited 1368d ago )

What do you expect. The XBO didn't have that extra incentive to own the console & that incentive is a consistent release of AAA exclusives majority of a consoles lifecycle up until the very end.

Knightofelemia1368d ago

PS4 has a strong line up of first party titles that made the PS4 stand out and worth owning one. One thing I'll say about Sony is their studios are great at making games and pushing the console to make the games look great.

Games That Were Bad on Release, But Are Now Great

BLG writes, "Some of the most popular games have had a rough start, with some of them being downright unplayable.

Despite that, developers have managed to turn it around for them and make their game worth playing. Here are some games that had a rough start but were pretty great."

Good list..hoped to see Street Fighter 5 there..and it is.

Vits4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Sea of Thieves... I'm not disagreeing that the game has improved in terms of content. But I feel that the most significant change between now and its release is actually the public perception. Nowadays, most people are aware that the game is a multiplayer PvP-focused experience first and foremost, and not "Black Flag made by Rare". Consequently, people dismissing the whole experience because the single-player aspect is lacking or the story is plain are much less common.

darthv722h ago

Several years ago, i submitted an idea to Rare that would change up the mechanics of battling opponents in the game. whereby if you died in battle, you turned into a skeleton warrior and had to fight your way back to the land of the living. It was an interesting twist on respawning and would allow the player to experience both sides of a battle.

I keep hoping to see something like that get added to the game.

Even though the games are easily available on Game Pass, a remaster of the original titles would be cool. I believe only the first got that treatment back in the Xbox One's days. As for Gears 6, honestly, it's not that Gears 4 and 5 are bad, far from it. But at this point, I feel just like Halo, it could really take its time, 4 years is already a lot but I feel a couple more would do well for this series.

TheProfessional1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

No, 4 and 5 are bad. I'm a huge fan and Gears 4 is complete trash. The story, the tone, and the new characters were all abysmal. Plus the uninspired robots. Only the wave mode and the weather stuff and destruction were good. 5 had a better campaign but was still medicore overall. Coalition kind of sucks. Same with 343. They need new project leads at both studios.

Or maybe let People Can Fly make another one since theirs was better than 4 or 5.

Lightning776m ago

People can fly are making a new IP for Xbox.

Inverno3h ago

Maybe if they're given the same treatment as the MCC. I wouldn't buy it cause I've never liked the series, but I do really like collections when they have all games, and touch up the old ones.

ocelot071h ago

They already remastered gears 1 and messed up the online mp on Xbox and killed it in its first week on pc.

chicken_in_the_corn2h ago

I still don't understand why anybody would want this over a new game. I'll be pretty annoyed if it comes before Gears6 .

TheColbertinator2h ago

Gears 3 Horde and Beast modes remade would make me a happy panda.
