Microsoft’s Xbox division head Phil Spencer has taken to Twitter to talk about the recent reception of PC games by Xbox Game Studios.
XGS releasing games on Steam has been a big boost for them. I'm glad Xbox has finally fully embraced Steam, this will only lead to good things for both Steam and Xbox.
They had to make up for the loss of sales revenue on their own platforms somehow. It would be interesting to see a break down of sales revenue comparing Windows store and xbox live to Steam. Something tells me they won't ever break it down like that though...
No doubt steam sales are head and shoulders above windows store. Why would that really matter to Xbox? As long as the games are selling and players are engaged, nothing else matters.
"It would be interesting to see a break down of sales revenue comparing Windows store and xbox live to Steam." Windows Store and Xbox Store are both the same store. Play Anywhere games like Microsoft games count as 1 sale.
RamRod88, Your whole argument is super shallow, it's just pretend that no financial aspects are involved with decision making or the future of xbox. But i'll tell you what, it's one step closer to xbox being a service only.
"No doubt steam sales are head and shoulders above windows store. Why would that really matter to Xbox?" Profit. MS can't keep offering $1 subscription deals while providing AAA launch titles to better justify the service only to offer it through a more popular similar service besides. Indeed, all that shows to anyone really looking that they can't produce the needed traction or appeal through their own service itself. Never mind the argument regarding the quality/quantity of said AAA titles.
As said before, Sony is "winning" and Outdated Console War. Microsoft is playing a different game. This is a very good read about it: https://codexentry.com/sony... Very bold move, but it's paying up. Making Halo Infinite Free-2-Play for Multi, will attract a lot of PC Gamers. Microsoft puzzle's is much more expansive and complicated than Sony's, but it can make them reach a much, much broader market..
"Very bold move, but it's paying *off*." Fixed. " Making Halo Infinite Free-2-Play for Multi, will attract a lot of PC Gamers." But is it going to sell consoles? MS's "bold move" seems to be to talk up hardware while making it less relevant by offering access to games from previous and other devices.
Hakuoro Every decision Xbox makes, financial risk and reward is always in play. I'm not sure why you would think I would ignore that. It's not hard to see how Xbox as a whole benefits from releasing games on Steam as well. Clearly it has been paying off for them just by looking at the sales and engagement we see on steam for xbox games. XGS games selling well and high engagement=more games being developed for both console and PC gamers. This benefits both platforms.
"Why would that really matter to Xbox? " Because they are paying 30% of each game sold to Steam.
They are also making much more revenue than if they kept these games only on the windows store. MCC on steam has sold roughly 3 million on steam. That's 3 million more sales they wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
@RamRod88 All true, but fact is MS didn't want to have to go to Steam to sell their games. If they did, they would have done so earlier. Xbox games are on Steam because Windows store failed. That does indeed matter to Microsoft.
Xbox stance has been pro consumer. There really isn't an argument against them. They are leading the way by pushing games beyond platforms. If you ask me that is the future.
@ RamRodd88. Don't know if I fully agree. Microsoft are a services company, that's where they make their money. If you playing your game on Steam, then you're not using Xbox Live. Sony makes their money off of online gaming. It also goes against the whole point of Xbox Game Pass. How do you sell Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass (subscription services) if you're selling full price on Steam? Gabe Newell has just shown he's a relic, he's living in the past. So you do an incremental upgrade, nothing else new, doesn't excite anyone, no innovation. That's old school gaming.
@Godmars290 I believe it will be very hard to find a XSX consoles during the launch window and beyond.
No evidence of Xbox going service only. This was also said last gen. Microsoft keeps making hardware.
@Razzeredux I know Xbox would rather sell all their games on only the windows store. What company with their own platform wouldn't? Gamers won by getting what they want(steam releases) and Xbox also is benefitting, yet some how it's being spun into something negative. @Neomahi Gamers still have to sign into Xbox live to play their games on steam. MS doesn't charge for online gaming on PC anyways. Their revenue comes from gamepass on PC and sales of their games.
@Marquinho: We're talking about being able to get Xbox games on Steam. Its not going to matter whether or not you can find an Xbox, be it XB1 or Series X.
EA has gone back to steam as well i love playing BF2 and bad company 2 on steam you have way better mod controls and community on steam. In bad company 2 servers would run our favorite maps from bad company one as well doubling the map count until EA came in and shut it down with their greed.
@Godmars290 You're still too focused on the old version of the "console wars". But if it matters so much to you, yeah, Halo will also sell consoles. Not everyone's willing to spend USD 1,500 on a premium PC. I expect Ray Tracing implementation to do its job on selling the hardware. Halo's style is perfect for RT.
Marquinho16h ago "As said before, Sony is "winning" and Outdated Console War. Microsoft is playing a different game. " Yep, Outdated, MS just couldn't make it stick...... MS in terms of their approach in the console space was the same thing , again and again... Just the same Zune, Windows phone outcome....OUTCLASSED No matter the Spin, Consoles still matter to me... The day they all become like MS's approach, Whether Sony, Nintendo, its just becomes another mobile game, Nuc, or media box ........or playable with ULTRA settings on a PC. Whatever floats your brick.... Its nothing new this approach from MS, its just less of the Pie , a piece thet couldn't grab or steal from Sony & Nintendo.... Now once again... like Zune/Windows phone, they are going to take on another market Steam has proven as Viable.... As so Mobile gaming.... Subscription gaming on per game basis (I bet)..... Like W.O.W... Im sure everything about halo - Infinatley MT's is just a copy / paste of F2P games , but its Halo! Outdated? MSterbated MS have proven they just dontget it.....especially now...... Outdated ? lol....
@Marquinho: At this point, there is no console war. Nintendo conceded tech long ago and with Series X, which isn't really going to see games on par with its hardware years post its release, MS are downplaying hardware in favor of GaSS. The ray tracing you're on about is not only going to be patched into Halo at a later date, but be available to the PS5. You keep saying I'm too focused on the "old version" of the console war, yet you seem to keep hinting that console sales are a factor, that what MS has done will promote sales, and while I agree, the sales I'm talking about are services and subscriptions, not consoles. Hell, this is like trying to argue that MS's stance since the 360 has been that "exclusives don't matter" yet Spencer saying it today is somehow a bold new statement.
"This will only lead to good things for both Steam and Xbox." Sure it will. Feels like I've heard this before. Whatever floats your boat
We're already seeing the benefits for both platforms. Xbox announced earlier this year, 2019 saw largest amount of revenue from PC ever. I can only imagine revenue will double or triple in 2020.
The numbers seem to suggest it's working.
Don't let the downvotes get to you. That's the best thing that could've happened.
Yup, the next gen console wars are on. Microsoft are publishing their games in cooperation with Valve, and Gabe Newell came out griping even though Sony built a PC, but Gabe Newell has really old fashioned thinking. Microsoft built a box with more power, typical, Sony and Nintendo diversify. And in the other corner it looks like Sony are teaming up with Epic Games as Epic seem to be strongly backing PS5. Let the games begin
PC gaming is big money when you play your cards right. I'm glad Microsoft is seeing the big picture by releasing their games on Steam. Not that I hate the Windows Store but it is nowhere near as simplified as Steam.
Now we all understand why some days ago, Gabe Newell said xsx is better just because.... without further explanation, lol!
But that’s who Gabe is. He’s always been like that. He’s an opinionated and loyal guy. His games only launched on the 360 for consoles last gen, aside from from portal 2, when he announced it at Sony’s e3 starting with “now most of you know I’ve been very outspoken with this generation of consoles, here’s portal 2 for PS3” or something along the lines of that. It was almost in an unprofessional manner, but it was very raw words that make sense Gabe Newell Gabe Newell. It was even ea that ported the orange box. I like the guy. He has no filter with his opinion much like David Jaffe
And Sony’s game like horizon Zero Dawn are also released on Steam so your point is?
So Epic praising PlayStation is because Sony is the greatest, but Gabe/Steam praising Xbox is because... money?
Oh yeah. A billionaire like Gabe must be a fanboy like a regular N4G-er.
I help out when I can with my £1 every now and then when they have a game worth playing.
I think this Gen is make or break for Microsoft. If they have another 40M+ I can only see them going PC only and no more console. I sure hope that does happen. I'm confident they will have a stronger next-gen than they had previously. I'm a PS guy but I'd quite disappointed if there was no Xbox on the market.
I think MS would sell the Xbox brand instead of discontinuing it
I doubt they would. I mean if gamepass is this profitable money pit. Then maybe will forget the hardware and just become a 3rd party developer and release gamepass on every available platform. That would be crap though. Because then only Nintendo would challenge Sony in the console space. Meaning Sony would take there foot of the pedal.
They still made money on Xbox
For next generation, not this one.
Microsoft would of been drop Xbox if money wasn't there. They aren't in it for the giggles.
I think they will go service only and try to get gamepass on every platform they can. Netflix of gaming, remember?
Is that why they are rumored to be revealing not 1 but 2 hardware skus for the Xbox Series?
Phil should put more of their games on PlayStation as well, they'll support the good games as well! Halo should be enjoyed by all, and console wars are over, so...
What do you mean "more", what games of theirs has come to Playstation? genuinely curious to know.
Maybe I shouldn't have said "more" since you seem to have locked in on that one word. Not my point, but I guess technically Minecraft and Psychonauts 2 are examples.
Minecraft is the only one that i can think of ?
God of War, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima should be enjoyed by all too. If, according to you, Halo should go to PS, then these games should come to Xbox too. And I thought Xbox haz no gaems, so why are you now asking for those Xbox gaems?
Yeah you didnt bitch this hard when ps3 didnt have any games for 2 years sony fanboys lol glad im pc master race no more of your console bs. Between steam. epic, green man gaming, battlenet, and gog.com i dont have to deal with you crazy people anymore.
Sony's not the one with mixed messages on platform exclusivity. They act as if making great games and keeping them on their platform is key to their success. I'm pretty sure it would be a cold day in hell before Sony put TLOU2 on Xbox, but MS putting F2P Halo on PS? I doubt it, but wouldn't be terribly surprised anymore. And no, I'm not ASKING for Xbox games, I've got a PC.
Huge difference between a company that believes in console generations and supports it with real exclusives they want you to buy and play on their consoles and one that pushes services, puts their games everywhere and doesn't really care rather you buy their console. If you want to enjoy those games you listed, buy a Playstation.
@crazyCoconuts Most of the money has always been made on the games the consoles are sold for a loss unless you are nintendo. Or this past gen when microsoft and sony cheaped out on hardware from the start by using laptop parts. And dont start the xbox one and ps4 are over rated laptop parts its bad they get beat by cheap laptops spec wise from the first day they came out. Those parts were 260x performance not even amds best stuff and they were and still is 40 percent behind Nvidias stuff at the time.
Ok there's no need for the rude sarcasm I was simply asking a question. Minecraft I can see but I think the Psychonauts thing came about because it was already part of a multiplat deal when MS bought Double Fine. FYI I have no issue with more exclusive xbox games coming to Playstation.
Most gamers own a PC that is just as powerful as a Series X and own a PS4 or Switch, not an Xbox because that'd be redundant. Phil needs to see the writing on the wall and could save billions by deleting production of the extremely unpopular Xbox console and use the resources to become a publisher. I think the majority of gamers on N4G and elsewhere would agree with this move.
'Most gamers own a PC that is just as powerful as a Series X ' are you sure about that?
It seems so. You'll find here and on places on Reddit like /r/games or /r/gaming the overwhelming replies (like 70%) on threads with Xbox news always mention anecdotes that users are skipping the Xbox for PlayStation because they have PC's that could run Xbox exclusives. Phil should recognize this and cancel production of the series X and use the millions he'd save on console manufacturing for publishing on other platforms.
xbox series x and ps5 are below spec wise than a 2080 from 3 years ago and have far weaker ray tracing than the old models once the new stuff comes out consoles will be even further behind. And consoles are still on 60 fps lol i was using 80 fps on high detail with half life 2 at 1280x1024 in 2004 lol catch up console lol Unreal 2004, counter strike, doom 3 , battlefield 1942 , BF2 , the first Cod game far better on pc the console game was trash and didnt have the same single player missions at all the same for unreal they made a different game completely lol.
Why are gamers so hung up on the whole "I'm not getting an Xbox next gen, I'll get a PC instead" line. Buy an Xbox or buy a gaming PC, either Microsoft gets your money when you play Xbox Studio games.
Phils plan is not to sell the series x but to sell the weaker $199 console with free to play halo and collect microtransactions for the next ten years 80% of xbox gamers will buy the weaker system
Isn't the series x like a 2080 GPU? Or so they say, likely because Nvidia got lazy with perf improvements with the 2000 series. Rumours are that the 3080 will be 20% better than a 2080Ti which is much more like it. Meaning a 3080 card will likely be at least 40% faster than the series x graphics chip.
20% better Based on what? Rumors? Is it also going to be 300 USD too?
I can do more than just play games on my pc although it's only about as good as a ps5 is going to be game wise. I'm not worried about the graphics much because i only have a 1440p monitor anyway
NO the 3000 series if atleast 40 percent faster if we get a new 1080ti replacement it will be 50 percent faster.
Steam hardware surveys will tell you that most PC gamers on Steam don't have very good PCs. The most common video card is a 1060, for example https://store.steampowered....
GTX 1060 comparable to the Xbox One X and most PC gamers are playing on 27" monitors at 1080p. Saying they "don't have very good PCs" is inaccurate and without context. The more accurate point is that no, most PC gamers do NOT have PCs more powerful than Series X as KratosKonundrum claimed. That's just false.
Yeah, but how many PC's are polled? It's like polls of people who game and counting people who use facebook web games. You have to compare core gamers on PC to to console gamers to get an accurate picture which is why Steam survey fails to give an accurate representation of "PC gamers"
@Hakuoro How many PCs are polled? Every PC that has a steam account.
Most of the time i turn down the survey. But my current build is a 1080 at 2159 overclock on the gpu with 450+ overclock on the gpu ram, a 3700x at 4375 with 32 gigs for 3600 speed ram and dual 1440 165hrz monitors at 1ms response time both are ips monitors. I would have got a 2080 but i knew RTX was over hyped and not needed now. But with the 3000 series we get double the amount of ray tracing cores so now its worth it. Even with my old 5 year old build im at 130 fps in most games at max detail
You're 1st statement is simply not true. Majority of PC gamers don't have a console as power as ps5 or XSX. I'm sure you would love to see Xbox leave the console business, but don't get your hope's up. Reddit is not a good representation of all gamers opinion. Minority of gamers don't visit forums and partake in discussions about gaming.
Sort of. Keep in mind that PC gaming is often misunderstood and its expenses are often exaggerated. You don't need a 2000 USD laptop or desktop to play the latest games. Almost every game out now on PC can be played by desktops worth around 500 USD and up including console ports in mid settings. Even the new Xbox Series X games won't require high powered PCs as noticed in games like Halo Infinite. Paying 2,000 for a PC at this time will get you superb hardware that will run games into the next generation's cycle several years in. PC gaming and tech isn't so cut and dry as consoles.
