Over half of gamers intend to buy a next-gen console within three months of launch

When asked to choose which upcoming console they were most excited about, 84 per cent named PlayStation 5, compared to 15 per cent who are most anticipating Xbox Series X. | MCV/DEVELOP

gravedigger1788d ago

Well, i'm suprised. Xbox is competitive in UK, but this is surprising result.

RosweeSon1788d ago

Gone waaaaay downhill for them over here compared to 360 days.

Toiletsteak1788d ago

Yep. All my friends had a 360 but everyone switched to PS when the PS4 came out

bouzebbal1788d ago

Not any next gen console, but ps5!!!

Mr_Writer851787d ago

What RosweeSon said.

My brother started this gen with an X1 having never touched a PS3.

Gave him my PS4 when I got a Pro. He is now 100% PS4.

I can't even convince him to give Game Pass a try, he says he doesn't have the time and has plenty to play on PS4.

The only thing stopping him getting a PS5 at launch is not knowing the price, he says once he knows when he will be able to get one.

Funny enough though my best friend has gone opposite, he was PS4, but think he won an X1, not long after his PS4 gave up the ghost, and he can't afford a new one, so now he only plays Switch or X1.

He is on the fence with PS5.

Not surprised. Majority of the games coming near launch will be cross gen. So people have time to take in those before they opt to upgrade to an SX.

Ghostbob1788d ago

Not really Xbox hasn't been big in the UK since the 360 days.

Majin-vegeta1788d ago

Not surprised with 2 gens of back to back disappointment

TheProblem1788d ago

Wow. 84% want the PS5. Xbox doesn’t stand a chance!

RauLeCreuset1788d ago

There are some things to consider about how they gathered their sample that would be cause to question how broadly applicable their findings are. That said, I do see something that might be of concern for Xbox.

59% named PS4 as their preferred platform, and 84% named PS5 as the upcoming console they're most excited about.

16% named Xbox as their preferred platform, and 15% named Series X as the upcoming console they're most excited about.

The difference between the numbers for those most excited for PS5 and those who prefer PS4 is almost equal to the percentage who preferred something other than Xbox or PS4 this gen, but the enthusiasm for the next Xbox is only about as much as the percentage who already prefer Xbox this gen. It's an indication they haven't generated excitement beyond their existing customers, and the games showcase last week may hurt those numbers more.

3000 people is quite a low pool but I dont see that general perception changing too much among the masses anyway. Uphill battle for Xbox ahead and they're already taking the wrong route

gamer78041788d ago

UK has always favored xbox, just like Japan has always favored playstation.

SullysCigar1788d ago (Edited 1788d ago )

It really hasn't, although UK did used to be a strong territory for Xbox in the 360 days.

From what I know, some Xbox one owners traded in for PS4 at various points over the gen due to the flow of games releasing on each.

RosweeSon1788d ago

I’m from the U.K and I’ve never favoured them can’t speak for everyone but they had a great period in 360 days I had mine 9 years but it’s not been like that for about 8/9 years people been buying PS4’s and switches in the millions
The charts show it all

https://metro.co.uk/2020/07...

4 switch exclusives 2 ps4 and 1 Xbox which is Forza Horizon 4... in 9th their U.K market share fell years ago and it’s not changing anytime soon we don’t buy into ideologies and promises we pay for actual quality products.
I think what with reliability issues for years constant subscriptions and services and minimal effort or output people just had enough over here.

TheTony3161788d ago

it really didn't. The 360 is the only Xbox that outsold a Playstation over there.

Rhythmattic1787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

U.K. Was one of the thre territories where the 360 launched a year before ps3', (US,UK,Japan) little lone 16 months in their most favoured ps ones........
And at the end of the gen , the PS3 out sold the 360 WW . So, what if they did release at the same time?
Seriously, just Let that sink in......

Console is fine it's the games that's the problem with the direction it wants to go in.

1nsomniac1787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

Nothing to be surprised about. Simple marketing and PR ploy unfortunately used in today’s society. Same reason they’ve been talking about shortages, despite all factories remaining open and hitting targets. Worried that due to the current environment and unemployment they’re worried that they’re not going to be able to sell as many consoles straight out the door on release day for their highest potential profit margins. Therefore they want you to believe that everyone else will be buying it, so you have to otherwise you’ll be the only one without it no matter if you can afford it or not.

Your console of choice is being released that’s all you need to know. No one has to rush to buy it, remember that!

If you’ve lost your job due to COVID-19 or just not in a financially strong position at the moment. Don’t let people make you think you need to spend money you haven’t got. It’ll still be available in 6 months, a years time. No rush.

"84 per cent named PlayStation 5, compared to 15 per cent who are most anticipating Xbox Series X"

The remaining one percent are clearly Atari fanboys.

NecrumOddBoy1788d ago

I am still rocking my base PS4 from 2013. I skipped the Pro model since I didn't have a 4K TV at the time but now I am really ready for an upgrade and the PS5 is on its way!

darthv721788d ago

I'd still be doing the same thing if I hadn't gotten a Pro for $100. It makes a difference even at 1080p.

lukasmain1788d ago

Wow, that's going to be a nice jump. You will have joy when you boot up the PS5 for the first time. Did you get a 4k TV yet?

NecrumOddBoy1788d ago

yup. LG a couple of years ago. I think i will splurge for a really nice Samsung next year though.

jukins1788d ago

Might wanna look at sonys "built for ps5" tvs. Up to 8k and 120 fps with low response time (for a big tv). Not to sure on the price but the 65 8k capable is guesstimated to be $2500-$3000. Definetly gonna look into one of those myself. Currently have the Samsung ks8500 starting to show its age.

RevXM1788d ago

Same played on my plasma from like 2010 to 2018 that was 1080p. Got an LG oled and I am ready.
The only thing I feel I am missing out on is support for variable refresh I guess since my oled doesnt have HDMI2.1... but hopefully most games will run steady enough for there not to be an issue.
Skipped the Pro, been waiting for a real upgrade. Ps5 is it, and I cant wait.
Curious what PS4 games will run and look like on Ps5. I hope for a couple new game announcements soon along with showing off the system and os with one or two ps4 games and how they run. that would be neato. Also a teardown video coming around the same time too would be cool af. Think Cerny said that was coming soon, back in what? march? C'mon Cerny show them juicy capacitors already.

Elda1788d ago

You have nothing to worry about most AAA games will be 4k/30fps & 60 fps. There will be the smaller budget titles here & there that'll be 120fps.

darthv721788d ago

Im not sure the PS5 would run the PS4 games any better than they initially were intended to run. We saw the PS5 would have both a PS4 and Pro mode. Meaning the games that took advantage of the Pro would run in that mode while others would run in the base mode. Sony hasn't said if just by virtue of the 5 being a more powerful system that if those games would be improved.

If anything, it would run them at full speed and produce less drops in frame rate or resolution.

RevXM1788d ago

Yeah, wasnt too worried about missing out on 120fps games because that would be probably only some racing games and indies. my main gripe if I can call it that is if some games dont lock down the framerate. say its all over the place between 45-70 fps. Id have to lock that down to 30 in the game settings. I cant take the stuttering and tearing. but Variable refresh makes games that run like that a little nicer. Infamous SS was kinda like that, it was all over the place unlocked, but worked well locked to 30. Dunno how many games will run like that. I hope they lock in and rather scale the resolution a little as needs be as most console games do now (Titanfall 2 do this I think), rather than being all over the place with the framerate.

IRetrouk1787d ago

@ Darth
You forgot the ps5 native mode cerny also mentioned, running those ps4 games at ps5s native clocks for boosted framerate and resolution, they have to be tested in that mode for compatability, they even confirmed the ps5 native mode after the reveal on the psblog too.

"We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers."

Get a 120hz 4K tv since you are upgrading soon. LG OLED is really nice and not too expensive plus 120hz . The B model is a little cheaper than the C but I’d get the C (have one)

Muzikguy1788d ago

This is me as well. Also my PS4 is starting to spit discs out so it really makes me want to upgrade

sprinterboy1788d ago (Edited 1788d ago )

Yeah I held off on the 4ktv, that new bravia 55" X90H £1,299 bargain
Edit: make that £1,000 come black friday deal

blackblades1788d ago

I bought a 4k tv and pro around the same time. I couldnt do it with the 720p 32" anymore. So 720p to 4k jump for me. I'm having a hard debating should I trade in both ps4 and pro towards ps5.

It Sure Sounds Like the Next Xbox Will Be a Gaming PC

IGN: Microsoft has announced a collaboration with AMD for the next Xbox console - which sounds a lot like a gaming PC.

drivxr10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

I think what most are struggling with is the concept of a console that is NOT a closed platform.

An open one. You're used to being locked in.

thorstein6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Exactly. If I can run Steam, Epic, and GOG, as well, it will be interesting to see and consider getting one. My first branded Xbox since 360.

Ganif6h ago

Saying, “working closely with the Windows team to make Windows the number one gaming platform.” is not the same as saying the console is going to play PC games.

If they are telling you they are making a console and all this other stuff, why not just say the console is going to support PC? Why play coy about it?

To me it seems like more of a reply to the fact that they have a Rog Ally that they are trying to sell but has terrible performance because of Windows 11 and they are simply trying to convince people to buy it.

In an embarrassment for Microsoft, SteamOS seems to destroy Windows 11 on gaming performance and battery life, as well as usability
https://www.windowscentral....

Every generation people say Xbox is going to play PC games then it doe

Obscure_Observer1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

As opposed to "open platform", it´s gonna be *more open* instead. That´s the main difference that some people still don´t realized.

The Xbox Next will continue and be your conventional home console. However it that will bring a revolutionary innovation to console market by bridge the gap and blur the line between console and PC gaming.

Literally the best of both worlds!

Awesome. But I think I'll go 60 fps and better res personally. But we'll see. About 2 days to go for me

CrashMania15h ago

I didn't play DS1 until last year as it just didn't look like my thing at all, but I'm all in now, surprisingly enjoyed it and this is going to be even better I bet.

pwnmaster300010h ago

It’s a slow start, but when you start seeing other players creation to help you deliver it’s so much fun.

RedDevils2h ago

Is one of those games where you have to go back to it like 3-4 times before it clicks.

jznrpg2h ago

The games I’ve played 120fps I can’t really tell the difference from 60fps besides the graphics are lesser. I will check it out but most likely I’ll stick with 60fps

Jin_Sakai37m ago(Edited 36m ago)

The jump from 30fps to 60fps is far more noticeable than 60fps to 120fps. I usually stick to 60fps unless it’s a twitch shooter or fighting game.
