Ghost of Tsushima Review | The Digital Fix

The PlayStation 4 gets to bow out of this console generation in suitably epic fashion with this incredible title. Ghost of Tsushima sets a new standard in open-world action games with one of the best games of this generation or any other, for that matter.

It definitely sets a new standard on how missions are done. They did an incredible job on making the open world worth exploring and the missions not feeling stupid and pointless even while being simple.

Assassin's Creed has also done a very fair job in Origins and Odyssey when it comes to the stories of the side missions but they're still extremely bloated.

Although, God of War also did an incredibly impressive job with side missions for a semi-open world.

ive yet to finish the game. But around 10-15 hours in on hard and im loving 90% of it . Still on Act 1.

Germaximus1373d ago

I'm over 20 hours in and still on Act 1. =)

morganfell1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

It took me around 50 hours for Act I ha ha. I cleared the entire area view wise. Early on I understood the game and fully upgraded the Travelers outfit so it would clear the most fog and vibrate when I was near something. I spent a lot of time just wandering and looking for side items like Fox Dens, Haiku locations, Hot Springs, Singing Crickets, Shrines, Pillars, Banners, Bamboo Strikes, Vanity Gear, Hidden Altars, Lighthouses, Records and Artifacts. This also includes all the random encounters and hostage rescues. I also died a great deal jumping off bridges and cliffs, and spent serious time swimming along the coastline. The game loads so quickly and smartly after death it makes trying things easy. I intentionally avoided as much as possible all Story Missions, Mythic Tales, and Side Tales until I thought I had everything without starting any of those quests. Then I went to work in earnest kicking the Mongols off the Island. Still in Act II and the new locations, changes in combat encounters, terrain, all of it...just amazing. But standing on the shoulders of the incredible game play is a story I can't put down.

The game is huge. Reviewers who said 30 hours clearly rushed through it and skipped a lot of the content.

Act 2 is great, lots of new scenery and a bunch of new gameplay elements.

It's the closest thing to a next gen Tenchu that I have played (though with much better combat). Easily my GOTY thus far, though I think that will ultimately be Cyberpunk in the end.

I’m about where you are. Just got completely mopped up in my first duel (on hard). Is this normal? Have you tried a duel yet?

I had to abandon duel to try again later.

Such an amazing game!

Its pretty amazing that Sony has given us 2 highly rated exclusives in the same amount of months and at the close of the current generation.

phoenixwing1373d ago (Edited 1373d ago )

i'm glad sony made a samurai assassin game set in japan before ubisoft so they can show them how its done. because we all know ubisoft wouldn't have done half as good of a job. now they have something to aspire to.

I would be on it. Especially if they change up the gameplay to differentiate from first game. Loved the first.

Currently enjoying Rise of Ronin.

blackblades27d ago

Both have different gameplay but it amazes me how people kept comparing just because they both are samurai. Seems kinda ...... that im not gonna mention.

Cacabunga27d ago

Bend studios making a gaas game and getting lot of negative comments abt that direction.
I hope these stay faithful to making amazing SP games..

Demetrius27d ago

Definitely getting ronin soon, I'm on my 2nd playthrough of GOT on ps5 this time🔥

-Foxtrot28d ago

Probably my most anticipated to be announced

I hope Jinns story continues and we get way more stealth tactics like dragging bodies away and the like.

Lightning7728d ago

I fully expect this game to be announced. Late 2025 release perhaps.

Either way I can't wait for its announcement at Sony's showcase.

Friendlygamer27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

I'm hoping for more complex interior level design for stealth gameplay and also a more complex stance system that's more than rock paper and scissor for each enemy type

RhinoGamer8827d ago

I have stopped pre-ordering games since Cyberpunk 2077 fiasco...this is a game I will make an exception for...

Ghost of Tsushima is one of my favorite games all time. Hard to live up to that. Not all games are going to be equivalent to some of the best games ever and that’s ok. It is a natural comparison though

Killer2020UK28d ago

Totally agree, as a jaded gamer well into his 30s I didn't think games could hit like Ghost it Tsushima did. I actively avoided story missions in order to pursue every single side quest purely because I didn't want it to end. I wanted to be immersed in that world for as long as it lasted.

JangoMan26d ago

I hate open world games. Its clutter and fatigue. Except GoT.. I completed every thing before going into next main mission. The feeling of playing the game was.... I cant explain. It was perfect

raWfodog28d ago

My favorite jaw-dropping moment was obtaining the Ghost stance. Epic.

JangoMan26d ago

Agreed. Its the dream come true for fans of Samurai and Japan feudal age.

Andrew33628d ago

Got was good but super repetitive.

Juiceid28d ago

Arguably every game is repetitive.

Rise Of The Rōnin review - Ghost of Nioh - Metro

An enjoyable counterpart to Ghost Of Tsushima, with some truly excellent combat, but the bloated open world elements can often suffocate your enjoyment.
