When that Mojang deal went down... I thought MS was off the deep end but they really have made MC into something even bigger than it was. So it really was a gamble that paid off. If rumors are true (about their interest in WB) then that too could be a big pay off with the number of studios and IP's they would have access to.

Mojang was acquired for 2.4B... Warner Interactive is 4B... and it's the kind of purchase that can boost even further the first party presence and quality.

I wonder if Microsoft's interest in buying Warner Bros. Interactive will raise after knowing Sony's partnering with EPIC.

Things are heating also in the financial front.

MS make the money back on Mojang really fast, Warner Bros investment could take years to get back, I dont believe they would do it.

Looks like people can stop claiming that MS is forcing studios to make what they [MS] want. They have creative freedom, they are still operated in the same way with the same people. It's not about buying studios to make cheap Game Pass filler, like many fanboys talk about. MS seems to be taking the "hands off" approach and that will really let the acquired studios create some unique games.

Molyneux did it to himself and the studio paid the price for his mismanagement. MS didnt want to close them but they did to trim the fat. Some of the staff went into other teams within MS studios and others went in different directions. It happens. Plus you have to think of who was in charge at the time of their acquisition and who runs things now. Big difference between then and now, especially to how much more creative freedom the studios have now vs then.

The acquisition marks the first time in five years that Microsoft has purchased a game company. Microsoft's last purchase was Lionhead Studios ( Fable ) .

It's hard to tell if the decision to acquire Twisted Pixel was in response to Electronic Art's recent purchase of PopCap, or Zynga's looming IPO.

It's pretty funny how you bring up past history from 9+ years ago. So much has changed within the Xbox decision since then. Continue to live in the past while I enjoy how things are now and in the future.

Peter molyneux left to do his own thing, that withstanding, at some point when it studio is given freedom, if they don't have any ideas or the ideas they continually come up with are poor ones, that aren't producing anything positive? yeah, the studio gets shuttered.
first it's *they don't allow them any freedom" then it's "because they shuddered them they're bad" when they didn't have any good ideas for the franchises they were developing...
it's always the same hypocritical (lying) bullshit narrative from you fanboys.
ms don't stand over them and force them to do what they want them to do, but they're still going to be held responsible, and of course there's going to be repercussions if what they're producing and creating isn't any good or profitable.

like anything and everything else in life.

let's have a discussion about Sony shuttering and closing zipper interactive! you remember,
the developers of socom... ?
wildly popular/ quite successful to the last game and then...

Molyneux is a snake charmer. He had a way too romantic vision of video games, and they ended up being average and best... and boring. I have no idea why he was named head of the Microsoft Game division but I'm glad him and Don Mattrick left the company. Both of them almost destroyed the brand.

On the bright side though, you have 343 Industries and The Coallition becoming one of the best developers in the industry... RARE making a come back and Turn 10 and Playground Games delivering every time.

New studios also look very enthusiastic and comfortable at Xbox Game Studios. Winds have changed.

Yup, and then Don Mattrick came along. He took a really good organization and screwed it up.

BTW... Peter M. is a loser. I said this long before he ever left MS. There is a difference between dreamers and visionaries. Visionaries make things real. Dreamers convey their visions but never achieve them. Peter always over promised and under delivered.

Still need to see the result of what those studios produce once fully under MS, in an environment more about accessibility and group online play, then compare it to what they brought in or did before.

Its just been too easy to say and insist that MS will do better when they've yet to. When they've taken IPs like Shadowrun and Mechwarrior only to turn out one-time shallow entries where, once they get hold of the license, 3rd parties do well better.

Hopefully we can all start using Mojang as the new standard example of how Microsoft is when acquiring a new Studio under its current leadership instead of the grossly outdated Rare acquisition that took place over 18 years ago under old leadership that's not even with the company anymore.

Well, mojang is still releasing multi platform stuff. These other studios are making exclusives, to battle Sony i guess, so we'll see how those studios fair when creating something new, rather than updating what already exist.

Why did you downvote me though haha? Yes, Mojang is still making multiplats...Microsoft WANTED them too! It was apart of the vision when purchasing them to keep them multiplat. I have news for you...EVERY studio they acquire is going to be multplat the very least XGS will release their titles for Xbox consoles, Windows 10, mobile devices through xCloud, TVs and the like...that is in fact multiple platforms my friend.

Plus your example doesnt add up to much because Rare only made games (at the time Microsoft acquired them) for Nintendo. Rare's acquisition is made fun of because of how many units the games sold after Microsoft got was because of the decision making of Microsoft. The way they mismanaged them. Now lets apply that same rationale to Mojang...the way Microsoft has been managing them has been phenomenal and the IP and studio continue to grow. I'm saying hopefully this can be the new standard at which we judge them as its the much newer example.
