Netflix on Xbox 360 defeats the purpose

From the article:
"After installing the NXE update on my Xbox 360, like a giddy school boy I jumped on the Netflix feature and started playing around with the service. To be honest I am not a long time Netflix customer, but I am previewing the service currently. The Watch Instantly feature has always attracted me mainly due to the concept of streaming movies over IP, it is a convenient alternative to going out to Blockbuster.

However, as it turns out you cannot queue up movies straight from your Xbox 360. You have to walk over to your PC and place the movies into your queue to watch them. Once you have finished queuing up your list, only then are you able to view them on your Xbox 360. This left me scratching my head, as I tried to see what benefits the new Netflix feature provided over my media server setup on my Xbox 360."

again? *sighs*

Netflix is going to implement updating your queue straight from the Xbox 360

"Microsoft and Netflix come up with a way to organize and search the entire watch now inventory directly from the XBOX 360 console without having to use a computer? From what I can see, that is the only missing functionality of the service that would make the experience better. UPDATE: In regards to adding this functionally Netflix said, "This likely will change in the future – can’t say when".

give it some time and stop whining already.

PirateThom5630d ago

"Just wait."

You sound like a PS3 owner... :p

N4PS3G5630d ago

I don't need to wait for anything i don't have a ps3 :p ..Im happy with Netflix just like it is ..im just saying that the people complaining should wait because its coming ..and who knows if its out before Home :p

Tubby McNutsack5630d ago (Edited 5630d ago )

Good article. The sad thing is that 360 owners believe they're watching these movies in true HD. Inferior picture AND sound quality in comparison to Blu-ray.

Compressbox 360.

nbsmatambo5630d ago

its hilarious to me that SONY yanked its movies from the Netflix...Ms better start kissing butt lol, cuz SONY has a lot of media power, as it owns multiple studios..(e.g Music,Movie, TV Shows)

jkoz5630d ago

"Defeats the purpose"? I doubt watching on a 60" TV instead of a 15" laptop screen is defeating the purpose, even if you have to choose the movie on the laptop. What a nitpicker. Can't believe this is news.

Parapraxis5630d ago

jkoz, I play EVERYTHING on my TV from my PC, TV Shows, Movies, emulators/games on my 42" 1080p HDTV. Me and the GF don't have cable or satellite.
My sister and several friends now do the same (I set them up, cost ~ 15$ for the cables.
When you cue stuff up on your PC...why not just stream it to your TV via a media server or direct connection.

airheadluffy5630d ago

i doubt everyone has a 60" tv much less an hdtv.

well neflix did say they will fix this, but he is sort of right. if you still have to use your pc to play neflix on your 360 it defeats the purpose.

Mozilla895630d ago

Like I watch shows on my PS3 through the browser so I can watch it on the big screen. My only concern is that people might get a Netflix subscription for this thinking the entire Netflix library is going to be available. Streaming to the 360 should be treated as a bonus for ppl with a Netflix subscription not a reason to sign up.

CrimsonReLLiK5630d ago

Amazing the amount of Nutsacks that click agree on that comment. Go sony go!
It's not 360 competing vs. Blu-ray. Netflix is it's own service.

JD_Shadow5630d ago

It's more work than it should be, and more work on the user than was advertised.

And if Microsoft/Netflix sees this as a negative to people, they MIGHT change it to make it less of a hassle somehow, thereby improving the service and changing the positive into a negative. Why you wouldn't want that, I fail to see!

IdleLeeSiuLung5630d ago

It is amazing what people will complain about. So what if you have to cue up your movies on a PC? I think the benefit far outweighs the downside (if any, really). What if I don't have a PC connected to my TV. Perhaps, I don't want to buy another PC just for this purpose....

Netflix is a value added service, you ain't paying extra for it so quit whining!

I guess most of the people here that complain about it that actually own and use a 360 probably wanted the NXE without this feature, eh? /sarcasm

IDIOTS!

LethalToxins5630d ago

Man, I didn't know I couldn't use an HDMI cable to link my 17" laptop to my HDTV...

Legion5629d ago

I am in the military and never used NetFlix before... but being overseas and not having access to stateside media is annoying at times.

I signed up for the 1 DVD plan, and hooked up my 360. I thought I was screwed at first, but managed to download a trial i.p. fixer to allow me to register my xbox in the states while I am overseas. It allows me to watch the movies that I want without the hassle of my laptop slowing it down.

I noticed my laptop (duo core) seems to keep adjusting the speed mid play of a movie. But streaming through my 360 I have no issues, it is actually faster.

A simple process of queing up any movie I wanted while I do my daily e-mail check, and when I turn my 360 on they are right there for me to watch.

simple and easy... I like it.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5629d ago

As opposed to getting in your car and driving to the video store? LOL this is all you could come up with? (((DESPERATE)))

joevfx5629d ago

Sony didnt YANK there movies retard. Netflix just didnt get the licences yet to stream those particlur movies it has nothing to do with xbox, those movies wont stream to other TV devices either, once they get the licences they will stream.

Traveler5629d ago

I know, this is rather pathetic.

"What in the world...you mean I have to get up off my a$$ every couple of weeks and add movies to my queue on my PC that is all the way across the room?...that is ridiculous and totally defeats the purpose...wah!...I'm not going to use it now". What a sad, sad little man.

What's next?...'watching Blurays on my PS3 totally defeats the purpose because I have to get up and go buy them at the store or go over to my computer and order them online?' Hmm...

Fallen_Angel5629d ago

Well this is a blog so who really cares what is says. plus this blogger is a known ps3 fanboy and 360 hater

Legion5628d ago

Sorry Joe you are incorrect. I can watch Sony movies on my laptop streaming but it pops up as nonplayeable on XBox Live if I try throwing it into my que.

So the option to watch it streaming is there, just not the option to watch it on XBox Live. Why is that?

I would have to check the legalities of it all, but their should be a precedence that MS can hit on to identify that Sony is specifically targeting their service to hurt the Live Netflix relationship. But I see very FEW Sony titles that are worth streaming anyways. Most of their older titles are veeerrryyy old to care about.

Xbox 3DupedMe

:)

ry-guy5629d ago

What are you talking about "not as it was advertised"?

Every preview and comment about how Netflix was going to work since its announcement said that you'd have to update your queue on your PC first before you could view it on your 360.

Take your fanboy goggles off for a second.

strotee5630d ago

Can someone please fill me in on something?

Are new movies available for viewing through their streaming service? The article said about only older movies are available, was just seeking clarification. Thanks.

ThanatosDMC5630d ago

There arent many new titles. For the most part, they only update when the movie is release on DVD.

meepmoopmeep5630d ago

they're what you call faux-HD

:)

Tubby McNutsack5630d ago

Xbox 360 can't output true 1080p and these downloads are compressed.

GiantEnemyCrab5630d ago

Tubby Nutsack stop spreading your FUD. The XBox 360 is perfectly capable of outputting native 1080p. Nobody is doing true uncompressed 1080p via streaming because bandwidths do not support that. It's a convienence for many and the quality is very acceptable.

RRoDReaper5630d ago

But only 20 mins of 1080p video will fit on a DVD

SaberEdge5630d ago

The HD movies streamed through Netflix look very good. Obviously not as good as a Bluray, but still pretty nice. I can't believe people want to complain about the difference between Blurays and HD streamed movies but think that the differences between multiplatform games on ps3 and 360 are just nitpicking. To put it another way...the difference between Fallout 3 on ps3 and 360 are greater than between a Bluray and a streamed HD movie. I couldnt get over how much worse it looked on the ps3...with jaggies galore and crappy detail on background objects. Anyway I like the netflix feature and it is a very convenient feature to have that will only get better and better.

DJ5630d ago

And then upconverted to your HDTV screen, i.e. 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. They're also highly compressed, with basically MP3 quality audio.

Better than standard airwave TV, but not exactly Cable/Satellite quality, let alone Blu-ray.

hfaze5629d ago (Edited 5629d ago )

"Better than standard airwave TV"

Then you've never seen a 1080i broadcast coming in strong... Blows away "HD" cable, and only Dish Network's new HD service is better.

While I was living in Philadelphia, I could receive 10 1080i network broadcasts. Once I found I could do this with just a little indoor antenna and a HD tuner, I dumped cable TV.

Unfortunately the selection is not nearly as good everywhere in the US... I moved back to Charlotte to be near my family, and I get two 1080i channels (only one of them, CBS, comes in crystal clear)

Regardless, with NetFlix HD streaming on the 360 (with a nice fast connection) you can expect up to upscaled DVD quality video. In other words plenty watchable, but FAR from videophile quality. And that's under OPTIMAL conditions.

Honestly, the selection of HD streaming movies is still very sparse. NetFlix will be adding more as they go, but only as they are able to work out the licensing. While the Blu-Ray selection at NetFlix just gets bigger as more movies are released... ;-)

Quite a lot of old favorites, as well as some new vehicles and an old enemy.

You mean 'Activision Presents: Man With Gun 2012, Starring Denzel Washington'.

Also, the new Xbox will be called the Ybox. You heard it here first.

jimmins4529d ago

More like Activision presents: one long cut-scene in which 'press X for controversial torture' comes up intermittently.

Biglet4529d ago

I expect Reservoir Dogs next time.

Skip_Bayless4529d ago

This is about Mass Effect 3. I always liked the series for its technical side and the dialogue trees. I never really liked the setting, the story, or the characters.

Other than the snow level in Mass Effect 1 and Wrex there's no memorable things really. Mass Effect 3 is going to be out on maxed out consoles so no technical or graphical leap there. Count me out on this game.

This being said Mass Effect 1 is a top 10 game this generation.

_Aarix_4529d ago

if that were true the xbox 360 would be Y box and the next generation xbox would be Z box.

DaveX3604529d ago

But what would the one after that be called?

irepbtown4529d ago

They probably think the world will end after that.
I mean, Lynx have made a 'end of the world'edition deodorant.

When we are here 2013 all and well, i'll be playing some GTA V.

joab7774529d ago (Edited 4529d ago )

They should go straight for inox or soon there will only b one console that's more powerful than any PC and it will b made by apple. It will incorporate everything apple and they will rule the world. So its better to simply release the Ibox and prevent future world domination.

As far as cod and black ops r concerned, it will sell 10 million copies on day 1, 8 million paid for by r government as unemployment will b 14%. There wont b a new console in 2012 because activision says so. They aren't done yet and until they r forced to use some ingenuity, expect the status quo. Why invest more $ right now if ppl will fork over their last penny to u for a rehash. So, as cod goes, so goes consoles and PC's as they will b held back.

Star wars will release and sell many copies just like battlefield did, but everyone will return to wow because activision obviously has the best games and the most talented warlocks casting spells on their products. Ppl wont know why but swtor just wont feel right. Everyone will say that its a better game and its fresh and many hardcore players will b converted but the masses will nitpick things like hotkeys and menu animations to declare wow as the enduring king of mmorpgs...and then the next expansion will release and swtor will go free to play.

On November 3rd we will wake to see if we get 4 more years of misery or a Republican (what a choice...no hope or maybe some actual hope with alot of immediate suffering). But to r surprise, we will c that Bobby kotick is president and EA is under federal investigation. And then 7 days later...the cod cycle begins again.

funny article
all i read was the first part where it says

1.January 2012
Industry analyst Michael Pachter says that another Call Of Duty game will be announced this year and that it will sell “lots of copies”. He also states with unsual specificity that an asteroid 100Km wide at its thickest point will veer from its predicted trajectory and on 12 December at 0043:29, it will smash into the South Pacific Ocean near Easter Island and cause the extinction of nearly all species on Earth, including 98% of the human population.

i was like what?

caseh4529d ago

Personally I like Pachter's CoD predictions, its the only f*cking thing he seems to get right. :D

CarlosX3604529d ago

Um. I'm like "Doh!" Of course they'll make a new call of duty game next year. It's already codenamed Iron Wolf.

Berserk4529d ago

Man imagine the sales... New xbox bundled with Black ops 2.

DARK WITNESS4529d ago (Edited 4529d ago )

We already got Black ops 2, it's MW3.. oh wait no, sorry.

To be honest though, my pet parrot Baba could have predicted that.

ZippyZapper4529d ago

Doesn't Black Ops take place during Vietnam? That isn't exactly what I would call modern warefare since it's 40 years old.

DARK WITNESS4529d ago

@ ZippyZapper

lol, I think you are taking my comment to seriously.

CarlosX3604529d ago (Edited 4529d ago )

I don't believe the next Call of Duty game will be called "Black Ops 2." Treyarch has a habit of changing names with their games.

World At War and Black Ops are different names. Iron Wolf may be a code name, but I believe the next game in the series will be different.

Aloren4528d ago

World at War didn't sell like black ops did. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to capitalize on the "Black ops" name.

I wonder how long they can keep this up.

SnipeySnake4529d ago

Till people start using their brains....

IaMs124529d ago

Well, we'll be seeing a lot more COD then....

AmaZinG4529d ago

Actually Black Ops had more innovation than Mw3, altough i like Mw series gameplay, maps and guns better i have to admit when it comes to innnovation Treyarch is winning the fight over IW. The emblems customization, the weapons customization and alot more were awesome additions to Cod that IW didnt put in Mw3... I wonder why

Dailynch4529d ago

Black Ops' campaign really wasn't that good. The original Modern Warfare is still the best, by far.

PetitPiPi4529d ago

MW3's campaign kills the original MW. Have you played it? Probably not. smh.

Majin-vegeta4529d ago

@petitpipi

No it doesn't MW3 story is a joke cod4 story is still by far the best MW story.

lsujester4529d ago

MW3's campaign doesn't kill anything, unless you bought the game for SP, then you probably killed yourself.

PetitPiPi4529d ago (Edited 4529d ago )

@ Isujester

I bought the game for SP, MP & Spec Ops. Why else would I buy the game? What a stupid comment on your part.

@ Vag

MW3's story is a joke? And you call yourself a gamer? lmao! PLEASE send me over your GT or PSN id. I need to see the games you've played.

jdfoster4529d ago

I agree 100%. Though arn't you sick of buying a game with no new modes in at all (multiplayer wise) BLOPS had no new game modes in competitive multiplayer and mw3 only had 3 new ones!! But I agree with the innovation side and I enjoy the maps more in IW games but I do hate the maps in MW3! I do... i try and enjoy them but I can't. I liked the crisp, clean look of cod 4 and mw2 maps to the look and feel of mw3. I also loved every map in cod 5! But hated every map in BLOPS!

DARK WITNESS4529d ago

I am not really defending Blops of poo, I hate the game, but I am sure it had 1 or 2 new game modes.

You had the one were you start with a single weapon and every time you kill someone it would randomly change to something else.. or something like that.

I took blops back to the shop after about 4 weeks or so, so thats why I can hardly remember it but I know it had one or two new modes.

Grendizer4529d ago

cod4:MW has been, currently is, and will probably always be my favorite cod game

even to this day i go on and play it every now and then.
