Dan McCulloch the head of Xbox Live, has just announced his departure from Xbox after 15 years of working with the company.
Make Uncle Phill the new head!
why all the dislike, I love Phil spencer, I think he will do a great job
Goodjob the greatest network then and now for gamers to play with other gamers around the world. Xbox Live created the standard of online gameplay from Halo to Rainbow Six to Call of Duty. Nothing comes close.
Ehhhh. The dwindling numbers might say otherwise.
Actually Xbox live usage says otherwise. Did you also know the metric that "compared to the competition those with an Xbox play a greater number of games for longer?" True story.
Isn't steam much larger network, with more users, games, and for free?
lol....last time I checked the standard was created by PC gaming and it is still free.
I'm sorry but you don't know much of the history of online console gaming at least if you discount what Halo 2 and Xbox did for gaming in general.
I'm not discounting anything. Creating innovation and creating "the standard" are not the same thing. Innovations on the standards created for online gaming were happening before Xbox was even a thing. So maybe you should educate yourself on history cuz it didn't start with Xbox.
Standard wasnt created on pc because is was too difficult to connect with other gamers back in 2001. If you were experienced, yes you could. Xbox Live made that very easy to do for any casual person who had a ethernet boardband connection. Online gaming was more of an underground thing until Xbox Live made it more popular. Yes its free and still is but free doesn't mean better.
@RazzerRedux maybe you need to learn how to read because I didn't say it started with Xbox. Xbox Live was revolutionary for it's time though and leaps and bounds beyond what Sony and Nintendo were doing.
"I didn't say it started with Xbox" lol....but you were yapping about Halo 2 which I never "discounted" at all. So who needs to learn to read? "Xbox Live was revolutionary for it's time though and leaps and bounds beyond what Sony and Nintendo were doing." And you need to learn how to read since I wasn't comparing Xbox Live to Sony or Nintendo at all, now was I?
@RazzerRedux 1. 'Yapping' (is that your fave word?) about Halo 2 doesn't equal saying "it started with Xbox" 2. Just because I mentioned Sony and Nintendo doesn't mean I was saying you were comparing them companies. I was. Pointless having a conversation with someone who can't argue his point without making 0 sense and adding their own assumptions. Quit 'yapping' yourself mate. Obviously just on the site to pick fights.
"Just because I mentioned Sony and Nintendo doesn't mean I was saying you were comparing them companies. I was." Yeah....you keep wanting to compare consoles despite the fact that I'm clearly talking about online PC gaming. You are butthurt that I'm not providing all the accolades to Xbox. You'll have to get over it. Yeah, yapping is my favorite word to describe idiotic rambling. You yapp a lot.
@RazzerRedux Good luck thinking GameSpy was the standard hahaha. Yes comparing consoles because low and behold its a Xbox article which is a console. Incase you didn't notice.
Keep yapping buddy
@RazerRedux Reread our conversation from the start you sound like a condescending douche tbf. Your post history is mostly full of you picking fights. Laters , got no time for people like you.
lol....why don't you turn that critical gaze of yours at your own post history, little one. You want to find a condescending douche? All you need is a mirror. And if you "got no time" for me.....stop responding, Einstein. But apparently you've got plenty of time. And you came after me with your condescending bullshit, not the other way around. You don't think much, do you?
Xbox Live created the standard of playing for online and destroying smaller online communities.
PC is equal or better and it’s free. PS plus had to come in before they started giving away games for free with gold. They really pushed for micro transactions “horse armor” and there’s 0 play mode without a paywall. Even games like fort nite lol
Really? I know on PS you can play Fortnite without PS+. Microsoft has allowed a few games though to go through it's network without Gold. FFXI on 360 did it.
@FITSniper @cell989 is correct free to play games on Xbox require a XBL Gold subscription.
Xbox has onljne problems almost every week it seems. Gone way downhill to the point PSN is much better in my experience. Not counting reduced speeds during covid lockdowns ofcourse.
"Standard wasnt created on pc because is was too difficult to connect with other gamers back in 2001. " Nonsense. I played tons of hours of multiplayer in the 90s. I was playing on online gaming communities such as MPlayer and GameSpy before Xbox Live was ever even a thing.
Apart from it isn't nonsense, he's talking about 'the standard' and GameSpy was never 'the standard' Xbox live DID revolutionize online console gaming however. Total revionist history from you and others.
"Xbox live DID revolutionize online console gaming" lol....hilarious that you yapped at me about "learn to read". He isn't talking about "online *console* gaming" at all. He is claiming the "standard" was created for ALL online gaming with Xbox Live. I never said GameSpy was the "standard". GameSpy, MPlayer, and others were tools that made online gaming easier on PC as he claimed it was "too difficult". If you want to yapp on about "revisionist history" then start there.
May his death be swi--I mean, good luck to him in his future endeavors.
Lol hit him with the classic WWE line
Props to your years of service McCulloch I wish you the best in whatever you do next.
Hmm, Cant say i knew who he was so i cant bury him like i rightfully do uncle double talking phil.
You, bury? Lol
At least you are being honest. Edit: I detected a sense of sarcasm.
Lol you give your opinion an awful lotta weight with that statement.
Gold pay wall is almost out the door guys. Amazon and Google are the competitors here... the gold structure can’t exist in that battle. I think it would be a masterful stroke and would give all the services they are trying to push the MUCH bigger initial push that Amazon and Google could only dream about for cloud service adoption.
You think MS is going to give up all that subscription money from XBLG? They don't charge for it on platforms where they are competiting with Google and Amazon, so I don't see it going free anytime soon. Maybe if XCloud or Game Pass can make up the difference, but that could take a while.
Bet 100 bucks the startup screen that Sony teased during their reveal will be copied I mean very similar to what msft has for their startup UI
What's a sony?
Willing to bet your entire life savings, huh?
What’s the ratio from a dollar to a gigzamillion
Good luck on your new adventures
Never heard of him thanks for making box live a great place to place now piss off.
I heard that he was playing Playstation 4 in his office. And whispering "...a lot better..." and at this moment Phil Speecher was entering the room! Must be true... :-(
Considering how often Phil says that Sony is doing great, maybe the guy actually said that Xbox was doing better?
It can usually indicate he failed at something related to a console release which is massive or he was crappy and now that a console launch is coming Phil needs to muster his troops with those he trust can get the job done. Or he was great and this was planned long ago, seems bad timing but maybe he finished the next gen upgrade already. Or it was unexpected due to personal issues like sick family, etc or some HR issue like breaking a moral or financial rule.
Or he woke up one day and said nope.
Dan McCulloch, thank you for the BEST online console service. Thank you for making other services have to improve to compete with your service. All Gamers should give this man a second a hand for his accomplishments.
They even changed the changed the picture to show red and the Xbox. This site...
Xbox live is going away. Xcloud and GaaS will be the only services.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo, not Dan McCulloch. Good old Dan McCulloch. The greatest man who ever lived. We will miss you Dan.
Good luck and thanks for being an accomplice to paid online gaming's worst idea ever.
