After a strong PS5 reveal, Microsoft has to go all out in its July showcase for the Xbox Series X to compete. Here's what has to happen.
After the PS5´s reveal even Phil Spencer is confident that Xbox Team can deliver a better showcase of games. PS5 didn´t show gameplay for their most anticipated AAA first party games and the GT7 presentation was a disappointment with pop in. I think Polyphony failed to show what the PS5 is capable of. Kudos for Insomniac´s R&C. That was a truly next gen gameplay.
Say “ PS5 didn´t show gameplay for their most anticipated AAA first party games...” Goes on to talk about the gameplay from PS5 games. Is the potential of MS messing up another presentation keeping you up at night?
@SpaceRanger "Is the potential of MS messing up another presentation keeping you up at night?" Not really. Not overall impressed by Sony´s "true next gen games" showcase. If that´s what´s they call *not holding anything back* regarding next gen, I think MS has nothing to fear or regret on their decision to continue and support Xbox One consoles.
Just remember, Sony has only staged one game reveal show this year. This is Microsoft's second.
PS5 event was very good in terms of game content, but it had two major flaws: 1. No AAAs at lunch. 2. Absense of dates. Microsoft has a lot of chances to "beat" Sony if they do address those. A great Halo Infinite + Forza 8 would already beat them on the launch window. As for the rest... I'm not sure we can say one can beat the other until games are actually released, but we can say if the event met the expectations or not. I believe a Fable reveal with In-Game visuals is a must. Same goes with Hellblade 2. We want to see that UE5 in action in a Real game. Also extremely intrigued about The Initiative's project. After recruiting major talent from Santa Monica, Naughty Dog and other studios, they must be in for something big. Some are calling it a AAAA project.. One thing I really really want on Series X is a 3rd person action RPG game. Not to compete with Sony, but just because I love the genre so much... and there's a lot of fanbase for it. It will be very nice also to see how much improved big Xbox One games look on Series X. I truly believe Microsoft won't blow it up this time. Actually, I'm very confident they will deliver... They have a lot of content and feature to share. and still manage to keep a good number of titles under the hat. Xbox Series S btw, shouldn't blow anyone away... it will just be a good addition for the casual gamer.
@morganfell come on buddy, that's a stretch. You think if Sony had a third party showcase like MS it would be better than their first party showcase? If that's true Sony have a real problem on their hands.
@morganfell41m Sony mixed 1st, 3rd party and console reveal in one. Microsoft had so much to share that they dedicated months just to talk about hardware, services and new features and they just gave a brief introduction with 3rd party titles. June was definitely the month of Playstation, but but we all know all the meat (games) from Microsoft's side will be on July's show.
It doesn’t matter what Sony mixed regarding first and third party. Stop making excuses. They delivered. You can disagree but the vast swath of public opinion is against you. After months of “Sony is in trouble” and other nonsensical garbage talk they crushed the naysayers in one afternoon. And they are not done. If you think they fully unzipped their fly with that one show you are on some seriously good drugs.
@morganfell41m "The vast swath of public opinion is against you" "If you think they fully unzipped their fly with that one show you are on some seriously good drugs." You need to breathe and relax. This is not a hooligans cave. Also, take a second read to my post. I didn't say Sony didn't deliver. I said they did, but their event had two major flaws Microsoft can take advantage of: Launch games and Release dates. This is what the article is about, right? Of course Sony turned all the reflectors to them after being tight lipped for so long, but we will need to wait until July in order to compare apples to apples. "Excuses" aren't even needed when you haven't even shared what you've got. In terms of hardware, Microsoft already took a different direction and the consensus is that they did a better job at showing off the console and the technology inside. Nobody's questioning its size/performance/cooling and after PS5's, not even the form factor. Also, none of them will have released everything they got in this year... that would make no sense... but consoles are mere months away and what they show these weeks will prepare the ground for the release window and beyond... probably until next E3.
Returnal could be a sleeper hit with intuitive gameplay. Always wondered what it would feel like to play a game with shooting mechanics like Dead Nation, Alienation Nex Machina, etc. but in the 3rd person Horizon I won’t even speak on. Franchise was/is a major disappointment to what I thought it was going to be. Wasted opportunity
@Lore The XBox racing game? If that's what you're talking about then I agree, but Horizon: Zero Dawn was one of the greatest games of this generation.
Suddenly gameplay is important? But when MS didn't show gameplay, you said: "We might end up getting less games announced/revealed if stupid people continue with this "show me gameplay" nonsense." https://n4g.com/news/234550...
The dude is so full of crap. Everyone sees through him
@RazzerRedux "But when MS didn't show gameplay" Never said it wasn´t. MS showed gameplay for 8/13 games presented vs Sony´s 12/26 games present . That´s NUMBERS for you. YOU were the one talking nonsense on how EASY and CHEAPER it is to show gameplay instead of cinematic trailers: "What requires more effort? Creating a video showing gameplay or creating a cinematic trailer? Gameplay is just a video of someone playing the game. Trailers are like making a two minute movie with original content. Don't pretend trailers are a time saver and will help publishers make more games. There is no basis for that at all." I tried to warn you: "It takes a lot of effort to put off gameplay trailer of a videogame early in development. Lots of risks involved." Risks like pop in on GT7 and non demanding small games like Astroboy and Sackboy dropping the resolution to 1512p to sustain 60fps. Now, how gameplay footage for those games HELPED those games and the PS5 again? That´s why I said to DEMAND to see gameplay is stupid. And I was right! There´s nothing wrong to WANT to see gameplay, BUT, developers and publishers will continue to do what´s best for themselves. Stupid fanboys were expecting Sony to blow MS showcase out of water with a real gameplay presentation and that´s not what happened at all. In end, the eggs is in their faces. Lol.
"MS showed gameplay for 8/13 games" lol...yeah, on PC! "Risks like pop in on GT7 and non demanding small games like Astroboy and Sackboy dropping the resolution to 1512p to sustain 60fps. Now, how gameplay footage for those games HELPED those games and the PS5 again?" I'll take risks seeing gameplay on actual hardware, (minor) warts and all. So much for all that bullshit talk about "transparency", huh? But fact is that from that "gameplay" event, I have a better idea of what those games will look like on my PC than you do on your XSX. They should have called it a PC show. "That´s why I said to DEMAND to see gameplay is stupid. And I was right! There´s nothing wrong to WANT to see gameplay, " oh god. Don't start that nonsense again. That's just bullshit spin and you know it. "Stupid fanboys were expecting Sony to blow MS showcase out of water with a real gameplay presentation and that´s not what happened at all. In end, the eggs is in their faces. Lol." lol....according to Xbox fanboys like yourself maybe. Sony's show was widely praised. Microsoft's was not. Pressure is on Microsoft to knock it out of the park. And I hope they do. Looking forward to seeing more games for my PC.
@RazzerRedux; You can’t say that the PlayStations presentation show wasn’t lack luster. Xbox wouldn’t have to do a lot to beat it... In all honesty we don’t know what to expect from Xbox besides the revealing of the console and we know we’ll hear about Halo Infinite... The first show case Xbox did in may was just a way to get word out and to show the indie games and some blockbuster games that will be supported on said console. We all knew that Xbox wouldn’t want to reveal their hand too early. At this point every year is like a game of poker.
it seems they are very particular about this "pop-in" in GT7 from a pre Alpha game that looked next gen just cause they've got nothing else to diss on that gameplay....picky picky
@TheHan "You can’t say that the PlayStations presentation show wasn’t lack luster." lol.......10 out of 10 Xbox fans agree with that, but I don't. That is a bullshit statement, frankly. The reaction to the show was widely praised. Sony’s PS5 reveal was the best look yet at next-gen gaming https://www.theverge.com/21... The PS5 reveal was all about games. That's probably a good thing https://www.cnet.com/news/t... And my favorite, from windows central... Sony's PS5 reveal just put Xbox Series X's to shame https://www.windowscentral.... So you can yapp "lack luster" all you want, but you might as well wear a sign that says "fanboy".
"I'll take risks seeing gameplay on actual hardware, (minor) warts and all. So much for all that bullshit talk about "transparency", huh?" More "transparency" than Sony, that´s for sure. "True next gen games"? Really? SSD Power and blah blah blah and pop in? 8K gaming? Up to 240fps on the new Gran Turismo? I could go on... You gonna see "transparency" in a few weeks when upcoming "current gen Xbox games" will be shown and gamers will be able to compare Sony´s true next gen games with Xbox current gen games. Then we´ll know. "But fact is that from that "gameplay" event, I have a better idea of what those games will look like on my PC than you do on your XSX." Do you? So much for your "wait for benchmarks" rhetoric. Anyway, hopefully SX´s performance will not render your RTX 2080 SUPER obsolete, leaving you no choice but scrap for better PC parts again after just ONE year, so you can have the "upper hand" over console gaming again. That would be a shame. Best of luck with that. ;) "lol....according to Xbox fanboys like yourself maybe. Sony's show was widely praised." By who? Not DF, that´s for sure. "Pressure is on Microsoft to knock it out of the park." What pressure? It´s just a current gen games showcase. Those games are been held back by weaker hardware, right? XD
it was just an initial reveal, sony will be showing more and more games. have you been hiding under a rock look how many games sony has released this gen? why will this just stop just for the sake of it with ps5 release!!! i cant wait for your responses once games are released
I think these Xbox fanboys have the memory of a goldfish. They talk like Sony just showed the entire game lineup for the entire PS5 gen. They must be scared. We literally got 2 big exclusives in the last year of the PS4 and they still think this was the only show Sony has this year? Lmao
U think Horizon Forbiden West was only cinematic? Prepare to be blow away by Guerilla talent.
"Phil Spencer is confident that Xbox Team can deliver a better showcase of games." He would say that regardless. Both consoles are drip feeding, holding back games and gameplay. More games already confirmed from both.
@obscure I like reading your what if/ alternate reality post keep up the good work for those Microsoft checks 👍👍
They need to have quality exclusives and hope for a miracle
Talk is cheap. We know how PlayStation delivers games and unfortunately we also know that xbox is on the lower part of the game spectrum. They just dont seem to know what it means to make good games. I think they are more about trying to find a cash cow rather than delivering top quality gaming. Oh well, another generation, another set of fresh promises from Microsoft that things will be great.
"After the PS5´s reveal even Phil Spencer is confident that Xbox Team can deliver a better showcase of games." That mean nothing right now, everyone can be confident or seem confident about anything with enough training. That's what acting class are for. Also, wait before Team Xbox show any gameplay before commenting on PS5 gameplay quality. At least there was gameplay shown.
"More "transparency" than Sony, that´s for sure. "True next gen games"? Really? SSD Power and blah blah blah and pop in? 8K gaming? Up to 240fps on the new Gran Turismo? I could go on..." wow....that is a lot of bullshit babbling. "You gonna see "transparency" in a few weeks when upcoming "current gen Xbox games" will be shown and gamers will be able to compare Sony´s true next gen games with Xbox current gen games. Then we´ll know." Good. Exactly what I want. Knowledge based on facts, not bullshit rhethoric. "Do you? So much for your "wait for benchmarks" rhetoric. Anyway, hopefully SX´s performance will not render your RTX 2080 SUPER obsolete, leaving you no choice but scrap for better PC parts again after just ONE year, so you can have the "upper hand" over console gaming again. That would be a shame. Best of luck with that. ;)" Yes, I do. I saw PC games running on PC hardware at XSX event. I don't need benchmarks to compare the same PC against the same PC. I need benchmarks to compare PS5 to XSX. Why can't you figure that out? Another thing you can't figure out is that I can upgrade my PC whenever I want. Console gamers have to wait until Microsoft and Sony allow them to buy entirely new units. If I do buy a new GPU this fall it will probably cost about as much as your XSX will cost you. If not, I could wait a year and further jump consoles to even greater lengths. The thing is....it is up to me. Yeah..over your head. "By who? Not DF, that´s for sure." I provided links above including one from windows central. DF flatly acknowledges the games running on ACTUAL PS5 hardware are still in development and they said nothing negative about the event at all. Again....why is this hard? "What pressure? It´s just a current gen games showcase. Those games are been held back by weaker hardware, right? XD" Maybe held back by PC HDD, but nothing else. I've never made claims that cross gen games would suffer from a standpoint of GPU or CPU. So stop making up more bullshit. You assume way too much.
Well...if Phil is confident, then no worries. Since he never seems confident, if he's actually showing it now, it must be all good.
change your name to Insecure_Observer dude.. seriously you sound hurt.
All I really want is the games and new franchises and maybe a price of the black refrigerator
Halo as a launch title, nothing can beat that. I have always been a Playstation gamer (financial reasons) but Halo is a beast title. I had loads of fun playing halo 1 and 2 with my friend on his Xbox. I think Halo will move a lot of XSX on day 1 :)
I am not going to waste cash on an expensive black refrigerator for one game especially if it's Halo I personally lost interest in Halo there are people who love Halo but not me. Gotta have more titles and newer franchises to entice me to buy the black refrigerator.
I see you didn’t talk about halo 3,4,5 as that’s when they started to drop in popularity I hope the next halo can sale a ton of XboxSX but realistically few people will buy it when they can play it on their XBO
At this point I rather play COD than another lackluster halo.
Halo *WAS* a beast title. In 2001.
Halo hasn't been the system seller that it used to be. The games are still solid, but seems that a lot of people aren't as happy with the last couple compared to the originals from back in the day. So far, there is really nothing that suggests that Infinite will break that cycle, although it's being treated as if it will be the second coming of the franchise for some reason. The game is also playable on the X1, so it doesn't give much incentive to upgrade unless someone is just really into having the best experience with the game....which would probably entail those who would buy the console anyways.
Halo is not the Halo of old. It’s not as relevant as you think lmao. As a launch title it might sell well though.
They can't and what's this about the competition? Didn't uncle Phil say that Sony is not their competitor?
Sony is only a competitor when Microsoft is ahead in sales. Gotta move those goal posts.
"They can't and what's this about the competition? Didn't uncle Phil say that Sony is not their competitor?" Well, Sony said Xbox is not competitor, the PC is. And now we have Sony releasing first party games for their real competitor. :/
PCgamers will still buy PS5 to compliment their PC. Any ports will be near end of life and like ps now have a limited selection.
Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t So y have another event in August? Another state of play
Yup, they still have to show off the console features itself too.
I think this could be the best Xbox Event of all time, I think they will have a ton of games nobody was expecting plus I think they will have some really big surprises too. I am expecting 1 or 2 Mic drop moments aswell. I think the pricing could be one of them..
This sounds like the same old nonsense we heard from this gen with MS. “Best lineup ever”, “Biggest event with 50+ Exclusives”. Honestly some of the most misleading stuff. Especially that E3 where it ended up being mostly indies that weren’t supported by the fanbase at all. Super unfortunate.
Been hearing this verbial diarrhea since e3 2013..
Xbox pr bots losing originality it feels like i've read these kind of comments for a whole decade now especially with the mic drop thing and in the end that game gets canned while in production and was only used for xbox hype lol.
If there is any mic dropping, it's probably just because Greenburg didn't wipe the french fry grease off his hands. Also, it'd be hard to have a mic drop moment with price if the competition hasn't revealed their price. But, it is possible a price could be announced. that would allow pre-orders to open, and would likely also spur Sony to announce their price to also open pre-orders.
This is an event I've been looking forward to for some time. Will this FINALLY be the event where we see a kick ass first party lineup from Microsoft that we haven't seen this entire generation? I'm thinking so and I'm excited for it. The Initiative and Playground games have to be revealed. That's just a minimum. More Forza Horizon is ALWAYS welcome. Hopefully something more exotic as far a locale this time. A single player game from Rare would be awesome to see. It is going to be a hell of a show. My PC is ready.
I see what you did there. ;)
I'm really curious what will happen if the show is disappointing. I mean, not so much in the broader market of consumers, but in the community itself. Not even with the Sony fanboy side of things, because likely, that would just be more laughing and mocking if the show is not that great, or even if it is. But, I wonder how the Xbox fan boys will actually react should the show be rather disappointing. They're building it up more than Spencer is....which is really nothing new. I'd like to think MS will deliver, but at the same time, it's not like we're treading new ground with the expectation that some people put up for MS shows from their own fan base. They're usually high before the events, then a whole bunch of justifying why it wasn't so bad after. One would think that after all this time, maybe people wouldn't make such assertive declarative statements about it being the best show ever, because it just makes them look foolish after the fact.
I just don't want Gears, Halo, Forza. Some new IPs and please show it on the console. I can only assume it's prepared given the early showing of it. Any of their exclusives can run on PCs, we know this.
how many articles are we going to see like this.what will happen xbox will show games and xbox fans will feel they have upper hand not realising sony will be doing the same shortly and vice versa
We will see a lot just like we saw for the Sony's event.
Yes this is essentially a do or die event for Xbox. Stay a competitor or become irrelevant and Nadella eventually pulls the plug on the Xbox brand in a few years.
If the Xbox one's disastrous reveal and other missteps didn't kill the brand, this won't either. Don't worry Sunny, Xbox will be around for a long time!
To me infinite is all they need to show. everything else is bonus.
Mature "single player" first party exclusives... If they can deliver anything along these lines... Mind you it doesn't have to be sony 1st party lvls of quality... I would call it a major move in a better direction for MS. Till then... ...
They honestly wouldn’t have to do much.
Lol, this mediocre gen would say otherwise.
Personally I'm intrigued to see what Microsoft has up their sleeves. PS5 will be my next gen console of choice, but I'm toying with the idea about getting an Xbox One X for BC & Game Pass.
Xbox is definitely playing catch up because this is their 2nd event before launch and Sony still has a 2nd event scheduled for August with supposedly the other half of their first and 2nd party exclusives.
Shouldn’t be hard to do better then Sony’s show. And Xbox really need to do so by allot. This July event will be the most important event for Xbox in a long time. They need to wow everyone.
I'm really excited for this event! I'm confident it's going to be excellent!
They need bold new ips outside of the games we know exist. We know there will be a gears 6 because of the way 5 ended. We know halo is coming and we know Forza is coming these titles alone no longer motivate me to buy a Xbox. Games that do are more inline with the original X1 vision sunset overdrive was my favourite game on my X1 I grew tired of the gruff military shooter years ago I still revisit titles like that on occasion but after so many versions of the same thing I'm over it. What I really want us another far cry esque a game that blew me away on the original Xbox I'd love a similar style game.
