I just finished it. It was pretty boring. I almost gave up many times during abbys part. I ended up putting the difficulty to the lowest, to plow through the last 5 hours or so. That, i've NEVER done before.

Thats what happens when you have a completely unrelated, boring story halfway through the game. But, i can't say Ellie's parts were much better anyway.

Some people just aren’t deep thinkers. Seems like there are plenty of people who played but aren’t accustomed to putting aside previous biases and actually trying to understand another side’s motives. Even when spoon-fed them.

It’s like they just see Joel and Ellie good - Abby BAD - set in stone. Even after her history is presented. In reality, The uncomfortable truth is Joel drew first blood at the end of TLOU1 and the consequences caught up with him.

Remember when Killzone: Shadow Fall did this all at the beginning of the PS4's life-cycle?
I sure do. You play as a new character adopted by the good guy who betrays you at the end of the game and then another individual from the enemy contingent hunts him down for killing their "enemy"?
Yeah I'm making things pretty confusing by not remembering any of the main characters names. So you play as Lucas and aa the player you see Lucas' father get killed by Helghast troops while you're both trying to trying to flee to the Vetkan side of the planet. Lucas is adopted by a Shadow Marshal named Sinclair he is the leader of the VSA's covert little army. The VSA are the good guys... Still Sinclair kills Lucas at the end of the game as he finds out that Sinclair wants the Helghast's newly minted superweapon for himself.

Good and evil isn't black and white in Killzone: Shadow Fall and still the game was considered weak storywise.

But somehow in a game all about how violence can catch up with you and where every character in the franchise known and unknown has killed uninfected humans for their own wellbeing or just because... We as an audience are supposed to believe that Ellie just turns sour and kills aimlessly and then at the very VERY end just has a sudden change of heart?

She did as the trailers suggested she did. She killed nearly every last person responsible for Joel's death. But stopped short sparing Abby... Just cause. We understood why Sinclair killed Lucas (so Lucas couldn't get Sinclair court-marshaled and because he wants to kill all Helghast with their own shiny experimental weapons).
I've got no clue why Ellie couldn't stop killing only to just decide to stop killing. What in that moment motivated her? A vision of her last talk with Joel...
Why didn't that come to her sooner? You know... before she literally lost it all; before she killed everyone.
It's just sloppy. And Yes I'm saying Killzone: Shadow Fall also had a more CONSISTENCY (and by proxy objectively better written) story that didn't make the players actions unbelievable.

Though I wouldn't say it's boring, a big part of the gameplay is searching nooks and crannies for supplies. The bigger, more open areas compared to TLOU1 does make you spend more time scouring. So, in this regard I can understand how some people would consider gameplay to be more boring.

I think that is just a perception.
In this game you actually "play" a lot more than the first one, with more combat and new enemies. This is accounted by almost everyone.

So, for me, people that think this game is boring is because of the combat itself.
But as I already said in another article, I think this is a misperception given by the surrounding hate.

My mates biggest gripe and of course he’s not played it is because of the early death. I think decisions like this should be applauded. This is a game sure but it’s grounded in a sense of reality everyone’s gotta get biten/shot at some point, specially as the certain person who’s caused all the uproar by dying actually stopped the world from getting a cure for his own selfish gains but I mean that’s cool. He ain’t James Bond/invincible nor jack Bauer and did we want a rick grimes survives every series on our hands. Nah. The leaks and random story plot points revealed before the game released ruined the story of this game more than this game ruined the series. I can still love the first game despite this game existing. New games can come along and be just as good as the first, or this one, if they can think of a good story. This game was good, and there was no liberal fairy pandering, nor were there any shoehorned certain types of characters to fit the way he thinks life should be.

Seriously, if you want to criticize the game, get off the anti-SJW rant. It immediately makes you look like you have no idea what you're talking about, because this game is in no way a SJW inclusion fest on the level of any current disney product, and the SJW inclusion stuff is so cursory, it's practically irrelevant.

Game has sold 4+ million copies already. It's going to sell more. I'm sure no one wanted COD/Fortnite kind of story. Most, I assume, are disappointed by the change in thinking/acting of characters that were established in the 1st game. Sure, it's been a few years, they're among people now, but that shouldn't warrant a total 180 in how they act. We expected a story on the level of TLOU1, not some nihilistic tale of revenge, that IMO wasn't executed well.

The story was fantastic, the lunar capsule moment, the 🦕 museum, the sense of panic and being sneaky or run and gun, great characters, great world, the guitar moments and practice mode, the oh fuck she's pregnant moment, the humour etc.
Its all there just like the 1st game was, btw reply to your other comment to me, you savaged supplies alot in the 1st game so not sure what your on about there, it's called a survival game but I guess you wanted a machine gun with 1000 ammo clip and auto heal while you run away and hide.

In the end it wasn't revenge. It was to forgive. Just completed it last night and did it prove me wrong. All this while i wanted to kill abby, infact hated her when i had control of her. But by the end of the game i actually felt bad for her.

IRetrouk - very interesting that I couldn't have played the game in your opinion. What you're doing is describing what happened, anyone who has eyes knows what went down and how it went down.

It's one thing to help each other out while attacked by a horde, and indeed seemed like their only option to follow Abby towards her friends. But 4 years of having learned to be more trusting does not equal dropping your guard instantly whenever their lives weren't in immediate danger. One would expect Joel and Tommy to be at least more on their guard, especially since it's etablished they're reguarly going out in hostile grounds (with hunters and clickers).

sprinterboy - again, putting words in my mouth. Do I have an invisible sig, saying "i only love braindead games, where I get to shoot stuff"? Well no, stop presuming. Ironically, most of the best moments you just listed were about Joel and Ellie, and the chemistry they had (just like in the 1st game). So yeah, is it so surprising some fans wanted some more of those moments (in the present time) instead of what we got?

outsider1624 - Ellie has been slaughtering people left and right by that point. Who's to say, she didn't kill any other women that were pregnant. Gameplay Ellie and Cutscene Ellie have a disconnect in emotions. Why choose to forive Abby then and there, after having left Dina and the baby, and well everything behind, just so she could exact her revenge? It felt like taking an emotional beating, with no pay off (at least not what I expected). In the end Ellie lost it all, Joel had lost it all at first, and Abby gets to get away, having lost only her gains ;)

Also, Joel was never a good guy, he was very villanous as he had done some very bad things for a long time, before we got to play with him in the 1st game. I think ND wanted us to think as Abby and Lev as this game's Joel and Ellie. Don't think they conveyed the same chemistry though.

IRetrouk - Again, yes: life in danger, anyone would take any route they could to get out alive. However, when on unknown grounds, surrounded by like 6-8 unknowns, it does seem unplausable to me that Joel and Tommy would instantly drop their guard and be like "hey I'm Joel, he's Tommy, we live a couple hours down the mountain". It's almost as if theyre one line short of sharing their hobbies and pet peeves.

In the very least I would expect them to have a bit more of a guard up, even if it were slightly less willing to introduce themselves or maybe even give a fake name. Is it that unrealistic to think that someone who stayed alive for 20+ years by any means necessary would still have a hint of that intuition, even if they have become more lax, because they're among a community? That's the 180 I'm talking about.

Again, there is no 180, hes went with, and helped strangers in the first game, so we have seen this side of joel already.
Tommy had already shared who they were, what would be the point in lying now? Abbey knows who he is, and is ready for him regardless.
Him having his guard down is nothing new, again he just saved this girls life, he had no reason to have his guard up, and yes living a certain way does change people, both behavioural and psychological...
As soon as he sniffed trouble he started to react, but abbey was ready and waiting.

I dont think it made sense for them to put their weapons down. Sure 4 to 5 years at Jackson may have soften Joel up but it isn't going to erase 20 plus years of experience. This goes without saying that within those 5 years, they have probably fended against people on their patrols.
We are talking about a character that Left a family to die right as the outbreak began, so he's always had those kinds of issues. We've seen the stuff he does in the first game.

Until he was "captured" he had no reason to trust abby. But he knew she wasnt part of the infected horse chasing then, and they had shelter from the storm. He had no reason to think they were going to harm him. He wasnt trying to make them part of his group, and said he would leave as soon as the storm passed. Tommy was a little more trusting, saying they should come to Jackson, but Tommy's character hadn't really been established on how much he trusted others. But it was established he tried to be a good person.

How joel took to abby is absolutely no different than when he spent time with that guy and his brother/kid in the first game. I cant remember their names, but just seemed to be a relationship of convienance, and a safety in numbers kind of thing.

People failing to understand human nature. Humans are naturally flawed no matter what people think. Joel is part of community, a community that is growing, they are taking people in. He naturally is more trusting, he had no reason to fear Abbey, she had just helped him escape death, to him she was just a young girl in need of help (remind you of anyone).

I thought the story was fine. Different than the first, and maybe not quite as good for the individual character emotion it brought, but good in the way it played on emotions and perceptions to play on people's world view of right and wrong. This game had a roller coaster ride of emotions through it, which is more than the first game which focused a lot on the building of character and building empathy for the two leads, so you'd feel the kind of relationship they had was one you also had with them. This game did the same thing, but with a different emotion to be felt, and the purpose was to get you to see the world from their point of view. Ellie side was built to make you feel the way she felt, while Abby's side was built to analyze it from how she perceived the situation.

The conclusion left a lot to be desired. Not in what happened, but in how it was relayed, and explained as to why it happened. It just was what it was, with no narrative to explain it. While I'm fine with things being left vague and open to interpretation, there wasn't anything there to build an interpretation off of outside some assumptive flashback scenes. The moral was pretty clear, although obfuscated behind pathos.

I think this is the nub of the problem Gatsu. I understand people being upset at the death of favourite characters in media, but I have never understood why people take it so personally. Some don't seem able to view the death through the lense of a story being told and recognise those feelings of hurt, anger and grief they are feeling are exactly what the writers were hoping for.

I sat in stunned silence at Joel's death, both my daughter and I are are borderline obsessive with Joel and Ellie's story. We were so upset and there was no way I could ever have thought that ND would have crafted a story and gameplay that would allow me understand and even justify the actions taken by Abbey and her crew.

After Joel's death I never thought it would be possible to regret some of the actions taken by Ellie, to see key characters and grow to like them, knowing the manner of their death due to the brilliant timeline the story follows was genius, in my opinion. When you kill them you are kind of shocked but you justify it with the fact that they killed Joel, then, when you interact with them in the second half of the game it really did make me feel sad and regretful.

None of these people, on either side, were evil people but they were so caught up in revenge etc.

For me, its the best game I have played on PS4 and once the dust settles a bit, I am quite sure it will end up being my favourite game of all time.

The surprises in this game can be compared to the whiny baby backlash when Metal Gear Solid 2 came out. Sorry the manly man man isn’t the main character. MGS2 controversy was actually similar but not in the way you're presenting it. It wasn't because Raiden had a more feminine figure that people disliked it, it's because in the demo (the opening level) you play as Snake and as such, people expected he would be the protagonist as in MGS1. So here again = unexpected protagonist (Abby), ironically also with an atypical build :D

Also, are you saying throughout the years, there never have been protagonists that weren't rugged, manly men? There are indeed plenty of games to choose from, also my all-time fave FFX, which had the slender built Tidus. Heck, people even said his face looked like Meg Ryan...

Does a game have to spell out that the protagonist is gay for you (or just members of the LBGT community) to be able to indentify with? Open question, as I'm not generally bothered when someone is more "diverse". Only noticeable and sometimes slightly annoying, is when that character has their sexuality as defining or only real trait. I would hate to be identified as "straight white male" and nothing more. I'd rather see characters actions/choices and thoughts be their defying factor.

You didnt get banned just for saying that ND did the story wrong. You likely got banned for saying something offensive or inappropriate. A lot of people are saying ND did it wrong, and they havent been banned, so stop playing the victim here.

And no, this game is not pushing LGBT agendas to the max. Outside of a few characters belonging to those groups, it's barely mentioned, and outside of a reference to a characters back story, it's irrelevant to the plot or characters.

I'd not like any of those characters you mentioned to be killed off. But if there was a reason to do so that drive the story, then I wouldn't be upset about it. Joel's death was senseless, but it wasnt meaningless.

I'm pretty sure it was the putting the hat on the dinosaur that pushed this game into SJW territory. Apparently, covering up the horn of a triceretops is emasculating, and somehow promotes gay rights, girl power, and veganism. I couldn't find anything else that I would call propaganda.

I've been pretty staunchly anti-SJW for quite some time now. Even before it became as stupid as it has since Gamergate. Not that I'm opposed so much to inclusion, just in the way it's being promoted and implemented in such shallow ways.

But with this game, it's really hard to side with the anti-SJW crowd, because they're behaving exactly like the SJW crowd says we as gamers in the community act. Any and all potential pandering is met with hostility. It doesn't matter if this game actually does inclusion in a way that is respectable, and not beating you over the head with an agenda like so many other games or forms of media are doing nowadays. There was maybe one line that could be said to be some sort of agenda pushing line, and it was a line I'd expect to hear given the situation. Lev's back story was probably unnecessary to add, but it worked for what it needed to do, and after that, nothing was made of it. A few lines of dialogue, and you were back to it. It didn't change the character, and for me, it didn't even change the way I felt about the character. Even if they were expelled for some other unjustifiable reason, I'd have felt the same about his plight. until that scene, I didn't even realize he was trans. After that scene, I didn't care, it was still just Lev.

Just like Bill in the first game, the inclusion was just there. It wasn't important to the context of the game, but just another aspect of the character. A nuance that had no bearing on the character or story. But, they were characters that were just people, that you could relate to, and that's what's important....if you can relate to the character. They weren't forcing up to empathize or relate because they were gay, or trans, but because they had horrors they had to face, fears they had to overcome, hate they had to forgive, and circumstances they had to live with. Things we can all relate to, regardless of what or how we identify with ourselves personally.

If this game had any SJW agenda to speak of, it was not that all these people deserve rights, are better than other people, or that we're all bigots if you don't accept it.....it's that we're all people. That is a powerful message that I feel is the proper way to eventually achieve equality.

Yeah, because despite the game selling less than half of many other games, it still somehow has in less than a week, 7-8 times more reviews than games that have sold 2-3X as much have had in several years.

Sorry, there are things which really deserved to be hated in this world. Things that are almost unanimously accepted as things that people dislike. And it's still rare to see that many people respond or react to it . It's also not like Metacritic is such a huge site that gets enough traffic to make numbers like that possible.

Hell, it's almost at 100K user ratings now. Breath of the wild has like 14K. First game has 10K. Grand Theft Auto across all platforms has just under 18K.

But, in one week, it's at 100K?

In any case, in the last few days, the score has doubled from what it was a few hours after launch. At this rate, the score should be normalized, and then what? If the user score settles at 8+, will you change your argument to be that maybe people don't hate it? Let me guess....it'll be bots putting in good scores.

I'm in no way a white knight, and am extremely annoyed by the SJW crowd in general. The only thing I hate about the game is the pacing, the rest is fair game and actually pretty grand.
They included a fair amount of subjects, revenge, religion, betrayal and loyalty, gender identity, sexual orientation, war, etc..and all of this mixed with the post apocalyptic setting and how even the dying humankind doesn't even change the current views on those issues.

I didn't hate it. I loved the visuals and gameplay, but looked around for a wood chipper to hurl myself into everytime I had to play as Abby.
