Phil Spencer: The Hardware Advantages That We've Built in Xbox Series X Will Show Up

During the Gamelab 2020 keynote, when asked about the recent PlayStation 5 showcase event, Phil Spencer expressed confidence that the hardware advantages built by Microsoft in the Xbox Series X will show up.

He also said he feels good about the first-party July show.

@bouzebbal you clearly haven’t played any x1x enhanced games then. There are over 100 that run and look amazing on x1x. Red dead redemption 2 is a prime example of that. Lots take advantage of improved graphics/draw distances/resolutions and even slight load times. I am too. This has been a rough generation for them, and I really want to see them bring some new IP's and ideas to gaming. Unfortunately, we know what over half of their studios are already working, but that doesn't mean we won't be impressed by what we see. I'm just hoping that they all are working on a least 1 New AAA IP as well as the games they're going to release. It's a new generation, so we should be seeing New game IP's.

In the full interview, (which I shall link below) Spencer seems to feel very confident in the Series X's capabilities.
When he was asked about how he felt after seeing Sony's reveal of the PS5, he said: “Just being honest, I felt good after seeing their show”
“I think the hardware advantages that we have built are going to show up as we're talking more about our games and frame rates and other things.”
In regards to Sony's showing he further states: “I thought they [Sony] do what they do very well and they did that, but when I think about the position that we're in, with the games that we're going to be able to show and how they're going to show up, and the hardware advantage that we have, I think we're in a very good position.”
This sentiment and feeling of confidence reminds me of what he said back when he was asked about the power of the Xbox One X before it was revealed.

Having a Series X Optimized Cyberpunk is already a sale for many people right now.

This July event is mysterious and the narrative of Series X games looking last generation has all but died... if you think the system won’t produce anything on par with what we saw at the “Future of Gaming” I’d have to politely ask you to take a nap.

I’m sure Hellblade and whatever the initiative have cooking will set a new bar for Xbox and our next generation expectations.

I’m on the side of those thinking that graphical differences will be minor between PS5 and SX and not at all a game changer on third party games.

For first party, MS has everything to prove. Sony has a arm long list of exclusives to prove they can set the bar for an entire generation graphic wise.
Plus, they also have a track record proving they also defined genres on gameplay or storytelling.

If you believe that only because 1 or 2 games will show good graphics at this event it will prove that MS will stole first party crown from Sony, you may be a little bit ahead of things.

For me, question is how MS will be able to deliver on games. They never delivered on current gen ( or were always over promising), it may be hard to see or accept for brand fans , but this is the sad reality.

PR side of Phil is a marketing tool of Xbox division. He is the good cop, praising competition, caring for gamers cringes.
The other tool is Greenberg, the bad cop, mainly trolling on Xbox superiority.
As for respect, all executives in the industry respect each other for a very good reason which is they needs to be able to switch sides for a career move.

And don’t be naïve, even if Phil is really a gamer at heart, at this end his position is to guarantee revenues, market share and margin.

Phil has to do his side of the marketing, tell me what executive doesn't? He does what he has to to make Xbox successful. At least he honest and tells it how it is. He admitted forcing kinect wasn't a good idea(you can thank Matrick), admitted to the mistakes at launch of X1, 1st party games were not where he wanted them to be(before acquisitions), but most importantly, he's kept his promises about improving Xbox, starting with services(gamepass, XBL), hardware(X1X), and then games(studio acquisitions) in that order. Yes, Phil's position at Xbox is to guarantee revenue and increase market share, but also to make sure Xbox is a product people want to buy and enjoy. It would be great to hear from the studios as well, but that's not going to happen until July's event. I know it's convenient to ignore all the good stuff he's done for xbox and nitpic everything else.

Why should xbox fans have to always be reminded in every article about why xbox sucks. Maybe keep your anti-xbox opinions to yourself. Thanks for making that easier for me. I would say Sea of Thieves is MS most popular new IP this gen. I'm not saying it's as reclaimed as Bloodborne or HZD, but there is a reason it's one of the most played games on XBL. Rare continues to add new content each month and it's nothing like how the game launched. There is a reason the game averages 50-60k concurrent players on Steam daily.
I've been critical of Xbox this gen with how things started and how lackluster they have been this gen when it comes to exclusives, but I can't see how people can still blindly hate Phil after everything he's done the last few years to put Xbox in the best position it has been in a long time. We'll have to see how all these new 1st party studios pan out, but to say he's all talk and no action is simply wrong.

on another note, I had read extensively what Mark Cerny said about how the power between the gpu and cpu works for ps5 and he even admitted it himself that the way game are made now would put the system at a disadvantage. Coding and optimising for the smart shift isn’t easy at all. Yes first part titles with engines built specially for ps5 will do great thing but any other engine? Nope they will code for the optimum level for the cpu and max out the gpu I.e. cpu doing approx 3.2ghz max and the GPU will do 10.28tf. This is the reason why most of ps5 games will opt more for 4k 30fps making sure it looks pretty and that’s what you saw in Sony showing. The games that did 60fps were astroboy, GT7 and another Indy that’s it!!! Nothing else did which proves my point.
MS has said framerates over and over again and this should tell you they will do 4k60fps far easily. In fact other then the SSD optimisation which ps5 is epic nothing else can it match or touch the XSX.
Here is what he said to eurogamer "Power plays a role when optimising. If you optimise and keep the power the same you see all of the benefit of the optimisation. If you optimise and increase the power then you're giving a bit of the performance back.
