Phil Spencer: The Hardware Advantages That We've Built in Xbox Series X Will Show Up

During the Gamelab 2020 keynote, when asked about the recent PlayStation 5 showcase event, Phil Spencer expressed confidence that the hardware advantages built by Microsoft in the Xbox Series X will show up.

He also said he feels good about the first-party July show.

"We've taken user feedback from the last event and I think people will be pleased about what will be showcased."

So no Aaron Greenberg? Thank goodness.

timotim1399d ago

I agree. Dont want to see him on this one. In fact, I only want to see Phil Spencer outside of actual game developers. Maybe one other hardware person but thats it.

RazzerRedux1399d ago

Phil Spencer running the show would be fine with me.

ABizzel11398d ago

Agreed. Keep it on the games and the devs.

crazyCoconuts1398d ago

Show me the guy with two Gandalf beards growing out of his face. I'll show up just for that.

same. . Leave greenberg out of it. . . . He lowers the tone. Let Phil deal with it

@bouzebbal you clearly haven’t played any x1x enhanced games then. There are over 100 that run and look amazing on x1x. Red dead redemption 2 is a prime example of that. Lots take advantage of improved graphics/draw distances/resolutions and even slight load times. I bet you don’t even have a x1x or you would see the night and day difference to the standard Xbox one.

L7CHAPEL1398d ago (Edited 1398d ago )

Oh it's pretty OBVIOUS he's clearly LYING.
it's just to the extent, he wouldn't know, because again he HASN'T PLAYED ANYTHING ON IT.
it's that same tired old narrative.
we can talk about the performance of the PS4 pro...
if there were any performance to talk about.
a machine clearly intended for the same purpose as the X, that is out-performed in every single aspect.
I'm sorry, how many backwards (because on current-gen it's a joke) compatible games you seen with their performance noticeably upgraded, by taking advantage of the "pro"hardware?... exactly 0.
PlayStation definitely has had the advantage in first-party games this generation, without a doubt,
because of Xbox having to restructure and rebuild.
but make no mistake your consoles and your ecosystem has absolutely NO ADVANTAGES or SUPERIORITY anywhere above Xbox. any assertion of that is a joke.

now you guys can go back to
in-fighting over the last of us 2

Sophisticated_Chap1399d ago

Aaron Greenburg is 100% green blooded, and I give him credit for that, but I really think they need a seat change in the marketing department. Give him his own show like Major Nelson, and call it a day.

SyntheticForm1399d ago

Lol.

That's a start.

Seriously though, they need to just show game after game with pure gameplay showcased running on actual hardware.

badz1491398d ago

or maybe they would stop using a PC with the RTX2080Ti and Intel 10900K to pass them as series X footage.

1Victor1398d ago

I just want Microsoft representatives to shut up stop talking and let the game do the talking, we all know how the “ gameplay reveals “ went after all the talk before the show.

Passerotto1398d ago

ahahahahaha Aaron Greenberg is the new Don Mattrick for Microsoft

rlow11400d ago

Really hoping they bring the thunder.

ABizzel11398d ago

I am too. This has been a rough generation for them, and I really want to see them bring some new IP's and ideas to gaming. Unfortunately, we know what over half of their studios are already working, but that doesn't mean we won't be impressed by what we see. I'm just hoping that they all are working on a least 1 New AAA IP as well as the games they're going to release. It's a new generation, so we should be seeing New game IP's.

rlow11398d ago

Agree, they used to be really good at bringing some big surprises, but this current gen has been a fizzle compared two the prior gens. I'm hoping what we've seen or know about is just the tip of the iceberg. Hopefully they will channel some of that past spirit and change that conversation.

Kavorklestein1398d ago (Edited 1398d ago )

I hope they bring the thunder too.
And part of me thinks, THEY WILL.
In the full interview, (which I shall link below) Spencer seems to feel very confident in the Series X's capabilities.
When he was asked about how he felt after seeing Sony's reveal of the PS5, he said: “Just being honest, I felt good after seeing their show”
“I think the hardware advantages that we have built are going to show up as we're talking more about our games and frame rates and other things.”
In regards to Sony's showing he further states: “I thought they [Sony] do what they do very well and they did that, but when I think about the position that we're in, with the games that we're going to be able to show and how they're going to show up, and the hardware advantage that we have, I think we're in a very good position.”
This sentiment and feeling of confidence reminds me of what he said back when he was asked about the power of the Xbox One X before it was revealed.
Here is the article I found with MORE of the actual words Spencer said. Not this ^^^ cherry picked NG4 article.

"The hardware advantages that we've built will show up. I feel good about our games lineup and our first-party content show in July. We've taken user feedback from the last event and I think people will be pleased about what will be showcased."

Made a stronger more capable next gen console consumer friendly services such as game pass, FINALLY has studios to back all that up how is that the same?

Godmars2901399d ago

They still have to get past their own mentality which since the 360 has been more about being an aggregate gaming platform. To be the one everyone, from devs to studios to consumers, come to and dictate terms.

yomfweeee1399d ago

Microsoft has bought plenty of studios in the past. Then they run them into the ground.

So nothing has changed until they actual produce good games.

derek1398d ago

You xbots never learn. Its like groundhogs day every day with you guys.

AngelicIceDiamond1398d ago

@Yom You're right, under incompetent leadership. You know the leadership that pushed for TV switching, apps, TV show series, Kinect, wanted to capitalize on the casual audience and experiences way more than hardcore gaming. All these focuses and changes started at the tail end of of 7th gen. People have been wanting something new from MS even back then 2011 and 12. But were tone def to fan feedback and MS pushed their narrative instead. I agree we still have to see what that looks like come July.

Godmars2901398d ago

Wasn't that same leadership in place with the 360? Wasn't Phil apart of it? I've pointed that out several times, just as I've pointed out that they've bought studios before - only to do nothing with them. At this point the most July is going to prove is that they're letting those new studios complete already begun projects. Its going to take years still to show that MS really knows anything about games.

Darkborn1398d ago

Exactly. All talk and snide remarks. Xbox fans would be hyped over an etch a sketch game coming out at this point.

343_Guilty_Spark1398d ago

Actually they admitted great AAA exclusive games would take time and they got rid of a lot of dead weight in the beginning and didn't hire really good studios till
Like mid gen.
It's really been indies, AA games, Forza, Gears 4&5 and GamePass.

AngelicIceDiamond1398d ago

@Mars no it wasn't the same leadership. It shifted half way through especially when Ballmer took the helm as the head of Xbox. The Most ignorant argument you can make is "well Phil was there" Yeah and? If your boss asks you to do something are you gonna disobey and get fired? Or do you actually want to keep your job? Especially at a company where everyone is expected to be on the same page. You either comply or gtfo.

@derek Things never change just like annoying aggressive antagonistic little Sony fanboys who don't know how to stay out of articles that don't pertain or relate their interests such as yourself. Lack of IQ maybe who knows.

ShadowWolf7121398d ago

Phil literally ran Xbox's first party studios and everything they've put out this gen has been under his watch but hey...

1Victor1398d ago

“Things never change just like annoying aggressive antagonistic little Sony fanboys who don't know how to stay out of articles that don't pertain or relate their interests such as yourself. AngelicIceDiamond1398d ago (Edited 1398d ago )

@Victor I'm a Queen now? Interesting. Lack of IQ stands strong you. Me being a fanboy is rich but please point me where I bomb PS like you say I do. I'll wait...

Exactly trot along child.

derek1398d ago

@Angelic ain't nobody stopping you, feel free to hype up the next dissapointing Xbox event. We'll be over here, popcorn in hand, ready to enjoy the next round of excuses.

Godmars2901398d ago

MS has had the same mindset to make an online console with intent to have a consumer base who are all online, from the very the beginning. Its never mattered who is in charge at Xbox, because MS have always been calling the shots. Conditioning its leadership. And Phil rose up to his position within that environment. He's not going to be an exception.

This conference will decide which console I preorder. If it worse than Sony’s I’m preordering ps5 over it but if it’s better I’m going XSX

CaptainHenry9161398d ago

I hope they show *great exclusives* in 60fps.

Ron_Danger1399d ago

Wouldn’t you also want to wait for Sony’s state of play in august?

Gaming4Life19811399d ago

Im getting both and i hope xbox really kills it with their show and their games hit 4k/60. I also dont think sony showed their full hand yet, pretty sure they held some games back and have more to show.

Ricegum1398d ago

No of course ChiefJohn isn't going to wait for that, his whole life revolves around Microsoft.

Atticus_finch1398d ago (Edited 1398d ago )

You should also consider VR or you might regret it.

Darkborn1398d ago

Thundercat771398d ago

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss4d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg1d 22h ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast3d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19929d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop9d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom8d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor9d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog9d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit9d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 8d ago
H910d ago

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts9d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H99d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop9d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum9d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai10d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.
