Pretty much if this game wasn't named "The Last of Us" it would be Generally recognized as a beautiful game. It turned videogame Campaign direction, and design on it's head.

Story? Really? Just beat it and there was very little development in Ellie or any other side characters, including Dina, Jessy, Abby, Levi etc. The plot was it's weakest point.

There was tons of character development it just wasn't as effective as in the first game. It seems that in Tlou 1 they prioritized 1. Themes , then 2. Characters, then , 3. Setting, 4. Plot. In Tlou 2 the priorities got changed and now it's 1. Plot , 2. Characters, 3. Themes 4. Setting. But when you don't prioritize your themes the heart and soul and meaning of the game gets lost and shrouded. The themes are how we connect to the characters and the world. I also think they spread themselves too thin throughout all of these different story components. So while theres so much more story to dive into in Tlou 2 it isn't as hard hitting as the first because the priorities got switched.

I also agree that there were some points of gameplay that were just not needed in the game. My biggest example is the museum scene flashback. Everyone says it's to show the bond between Joel and Ellie lovey dovey bla bla bla. We already knew they have a close bond. This is just total redundance. This scene would have been justified had they actually gone into a dark encounter like they were teasing with the killer leaving those notes all around. But no, nothing happened. That would have been a wonderful payoff to the redundant lovey dovey stuff. It would have been a solid action gameplay moment as a reward for having to sit through an hour of boring walking simulator.

That's another thing that was missing. There weren't any trademark Naughty Dog action set pieces. Okay there were a couple of on rails shooting segments from vehicles but we expect waaaay more than that from ND at this point.
