PlayStation 5: what to expect from next-gen console ray tracing

From Digital Foundry: "With nigh-on 30 titles revealed at last week's PlayStation 5 software showcase, there's certainly plenty of material for Digital Foundry to mull over in its wake - but one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises was the range of games from both first and third party developers using the machine's hardware accelerated ray tracing technology. But what was actually shown that we can say for sure was using hardware RT? What kind of effects were featured and how do they function? And perhaps most crucially, going forward, what does the software showcase tell us more generally about how ray tracing will be deployed in the next-gen console era?"

Can't wait to see all the titles that will take advantage of this feature.

darthv721835d ago

GT7 and R&C are the ones I really took notice of.

AKS1834d ago

There was a lot in those games, but the quality of ray traced reflections also looked very good in Pragmata and surprisingly Stray in the mirror and wet concrete.

isarai1835d ago

Well based on what was shown, seems like you'll get 1 ray trace effect per game depending in what the dev decides to use be it RT reflections like R&C, or RT ambient occlusing, or RT global Illumination, etc. Doing so with a typical AAA game looks like it will demand tii much to allow 60fps so 30 fps will like be all we see with games using raytracing unless they use a more primative graphical style. This is all assumed based on what's been shown and doable at the moment, who knows how they'll continue to improve and optimize over the years

isarai1835d ago

I replied before i got the chance to view the video which addresses most of what i mentioned 🤣🤣 now i geel like a doofus

RaidenBlack1835d ago

Ray Tracing needs to be used effectively i.e. where its required artistically.
Nobody wants mirror walls and mirror floors.

KyRo1835d ago

That true but it will be nice to have working mirrors in games. The amount of games that show no reflection of the character, or is a 2D image, or a low Res reflection should be a thing of the past

Tacoboto1835d ago

The Outer Worlds and Final Fantasy VII Remake have some of the worst mirrors - they're like gray slates.

Super Mario Odyssey and TLOU Remastered have only one or two mirrors each (SM - inside the ship, TLOU - in the house at the start of the game) but they look like actual mirrors and the games don't stutter when looking through them. Small rooms so maybe it's easier to duplicate the character model and reverse the inputs like old-school Duke Nukem 3D.

Resident Evil 2 Remake had just a single room with a two-way mirror, but whatever implementation they did, that realistically-shattering mirror tanked performance on my PC. If it was Ray-Traced, it was a very-pretty very-rough brute-force approach.

Sunny_D1835d ago

Uncharted 4 has pretty good reflections in the mirror.

RaidenBlack1835d ago

ND perfected that even further in Last of Us II

rainslacker1835d ago

Sakura Wars has immaculate mirrors. Just something that stood out as I was playing, which I'm actually finishing up at the moment.

I hat to expect from ray tracing on next gen ps5...fix the title. It’s super misleading. Guarantee it will be vastly different on more capable hardware.

TKCMuzzer1835d ago

Er what? It will only be different if the devs want to waste power. It will be used sparingly on most new hardware to get the most from the power. Plus I think your comment is more misleading than the title.

Games1st1835d ago (Edited 1835d ago )

Pc can counter performance drops with high fps. Consoles should focus on next gen gameplay.

AKS1834d ago

It's a very demanding technology. I have an RTX 2080 Super and Control and Metro Exodus currently. Just cranking it full blast everywhere doesn't even make sense for the most powerful graphics cards available. Developers will get more skillful in using it over time. On PC both of the games I mentioned use DLSS because the effects are very computationally demanding.

It would be interesting. I’m all for it. Gran turismo is suppose to be the place to realistically drive cars from all make and models.

China has a whole bunch of interesting cars right now, so would be cool if they'd release a pack with a bunch of different brands, as well as a nice (fictional) China track ...

Gran Turismo 7’s next update includes four cars, launches 15th May

The usual update cycle has been broken, with a mid-month Gran Turismo 7 patch to include a Suzuki, a Honda, a Chevrolet Corvette and a Ferrari.

Aloymetal47d ago

Imagine how insane GT8 is gonna look. PD always pushing the hardware to its limits.

jukins47d ago

Hope they just wait for ps6 so nothing has to be held back.

derek46d ago

💯, love this game in vr, gotg for me so far.

Amplitude46d ago

I really wish they'd do a Gran Turismo Horizon. There's not enough arcade racers these days.
It's pretty much just Forza Horizon.

I want Citta di Aria track. Imagine that. Toughest, tightest track

RaiderNation46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Been shouting this for a while. I dont care if Polyphony ever adds another car to this game. Give us tracks!!! Especially city tracks that are "alive"! Where's Seattle? Where's Rome? Wheres Hong Kong? Hell they dont even have to be free! Release a track pack for 19.99 with like 4 new locations! I'd happily buy it!

INMATEofARKHAM46d ago

Its crazy to think Forza just added a track that's over 10 mile in lenght this week! The much beloved Fujimi Kaido that hasn't been seen since Forza 4.

repsahj46d ago

PD please include suzuki spresso next time!
