Edge: Resistance 2 Review

Resistance 2 is every bit the product of Resistance: Fall of Man's mentality: it's OK to do things by the numbers so long as those numbers are bigger than everyone else's.

PS. I am not the one who contributed the article THIS time... just so no one's confused. I simply gave this contributor my blessing (yes that's colorful wording) and said he could repost it if he likes. Just wanted to clear that up as I don't think I was clear before.

I was the poster of this article orginally and I prematurely deleted my submission as I said I would if scans were linked and they were readable. I didn't want to go back on my word but in hindsight I think I shouldn't have deleted it. I believe this should be approved. He has a point that the review hasn't been tallied and the Left 4 Dead review from Edge (which I also posted) was approved. It's only fair that this should be as well. I would ask the mods to please link this to the correct url.

Sigh... This hasn't been tallied up in the average score. There is no reason to abuse the system like this. This here shows not only the score but also the article, and what they wrote about the game. This is news worthy.

barom5632d ago

Same guys that gave Halo 3 a 10/10 and Bioshock 8/10.

Pika-pie5632d ago

These guys talk like they deserve credibility and their opinion matters more than anyone elses because they have been around for a while.

Well that may be true, but they gave Left for dead a 9 in the same issue.... WTF!!!!!! Credibility out the window!

Every other site has given RE2 a 9-10, even the odd 8. So every other reviewer is wrong and edge is right, sorry I dont buy it.

thor5632d ago

They have expanded on their section from their Magazine review regarding the online, I think.

But it still barely gets a mention.

Their main complaint(!!) is that they've focused on bringing us more players, more content and bigger enemies!

"Not just bullets, either, but the wild range of beams, fireballs and energy pellets that make fighting the Chimera such a chore."

So basically it's a chore to fight the Chimera because they shoot back at you. No wonder they liked L4D more than this game...

Their only valid concerns are that Hale can only carry 2 weapons, and that the AI isn't great. But is that reason to give the game a 6? Are they ignoring the online on purpose?

The co-op, which I've heard is the best part of R2, gets called "Partially Successful". Edge go into NO detail in the shooting mechanics or fun of the game, and seem to focus only on the negative.

You can't say that if they give a 6/10 they are necessarily fanboys, but when pretty much everyone else loves this game, and it's sitting on a 8.9 average score, you have to suspect it.

Socom5632d ago (Edited 5632d ago )

"damn if I give this game a 9.5, it will rise. But if I hand it a 6, it will take 3 more 9.5s until it hits meta 9."

So by giving it a 6, they think that they put the final nail in the coffin so that Resistance 2 will never hit the meta 9. As if Triple A is determined by 0.1s of scores...

Hahaha fanboy tactics at the worst. Edge is insignificant and noone ever read Edge again.

R2 is not yet out in Europe, but I guarantee you, day one for me and my friends. The status of shooters goes like this:

Resistance 2> CoD WAW > Left4Dead PC > Gears of War 2> Left4Dead 360

thor5632d ago

No we knew ages ago that they'd given it a 6/10 - the online review is a slightly edited version of the review in their Magazine.

Most of Edge's scores were a joke in that issue - 6/10 for CoD:WaW, games like Quantum of Solace getting 5/10 - but that's nearly the same score as R2, other games getting better than R2 which were also ridiculous.

Then they had the cheek to give L4D a 9/10 - which is fine in and of itself, but when you give R2 a 6/10 which has a similar (and yet deeper) co-op mode as just one part of the entire package, it screams bias.

Sarcasm5632d ago

I am not bothered that whoever wrote this gave the game a 6 out of 10.

I'm much more bothered by the fact it's barely 8 paragraphs.

Bleem3605632d ago (Edited 5632d ago )

with their review scores, always have been and always will be.

No amount of complaints from the community will ever change that.

It's not just PS3 titles that get it in the neck, Mass Effect for example - considered by many to be one of the best titles on the 360. What did they have to say about that?

7/10

Mass Effect is still enjoyable enough to warrant 24 hours of play (completion with sub-missions), and the stops it makes en route are visually stunning. It just doesn’t find what it goes looking for: the myth and exotica to accurately follow Star Wars. [Christmas 2007, p.86]

[Edit] Taken from metacritic, where most scores for Mass Effect are either 100 or 90's - like wise for R2's metacritic page.

You guys really shouldn't be reading too much in to this - it's fairly common and no sign of bias intented.

SolidSnake935632d ago

Fanboys, when will they stop.

badz1495632d ago

from one of the most horrible reviewer around! 6 is not an indicator of fanboyism but in this case it's rather an indicator of DUMBNESS!!

EastCoastSB5632d ago

Agreed.

That was probably the worst review I've ever read. It should even be categorized as an article, much less a review.

AnSteRiX5632d ago

even after reading this review if people think its better comparing it with Gears Of War 2 then they can roll over and die!!

gaffyh5632d ago

I don't understand this score, Edge must be retarded or something. If they gave Halo 3 10/10 it must be because of the multiplayer, and I can only see the reason for them giving 8/10 to Bioshock because there is no multiplayer.

So how the f*** does R2 deserve such a low score? The online is better than the last game, plus there is co-op, the graphics are much better and the single-player is pretty good. The only reason I can see is that these guys are xbox fanboys/halo fanboys.

TheSadTruth5632d ago

"No we knew ages ago that they'd given it a 6/10 - the online review is a slightly edited version of the review in their Magazine.

L4D is a better game, period. You people are using numbers again, who cares if Resistance 2 has 200 gameplay hours, 400 weapons, and 100 players online, it does not have the quality that L4D provides. I feel sorry for you guys that feel obliged to buy it just to justify your PS3 purchase.

gijose5632d ago

how can you compare L4D's multiplayer with R2? They're COMPLETELY different, and anyone saying otherwise hasn't played both.

GIJeff5632d ago

.....really? L4D is a MOD for a 4+ year old engine. The AI is non existent(why are zombies spawning on top objects they cant climb? like dressers, etc..), the weapons and how they're used is basic, the maps are basic and generic, the story is cheap and stolen, etc. etc. What L4D does successfully is act as a pretty good survival mini game that should have been included in a much bigger game. Calling L4D a quality title compared to R2 is an outright joke. I like L4D, but quality wise, LOL.

TheSadTruth5632d ago

"Calling L4D a quality title compared to R2 is an outright joke. I like L4D, but quality wise, LOL. "

Which is why L4D is critically acclaimed and Resistance 2 is just another FPS from the creator's of Ratchet and Clank.

KRUSSIDULL5632d ago

Arent reviews just opinions guys you have to play the game youself and see if its good or not.

Aquanox5632d ago

Pretty interesting. Resistance 2 has fallen below the 90s even the filled-by-fanboy-blog-scores N4G.com

In metacritic, it has just hit 87%. Well below Fable II.

kwyjibo5632d ago

Have you played Left4Dead at all?

The pathfinding AI is some of the best there is, there is absolutely nowhere the infected can't climb. The AI director is superb, getting the pacing and variety right every play through.

If it weren't so, then there wouldn't be so many moments when a hunter has manage to pounce one of your team, or when a smoker has dragged one of your guys off.

The weapons may be basic, but they all do a separate clearly defined job. You're not fighting things one on one, you don't need a Halo Needler, or some sci-fi wallhack gun. I know you love your chainsaw duels, but they don't really have a place in a contemporary urban environment.

Dismissing it as a mod, is doing the game a disservice, and reflects badly upon your position. Pacific Rift is a mod of Motorstorm is it? Team Fortress 2 is a mod of Half-Life 2, is it? Compare Left4Dead to World of War's survival minigame, and you'll see an giant leap in scope and quality.

Maxned5632d ago

Come on even im a 360 fanboy and I know that theres something wrong with that score...

CryofSilence5631d ago

Everyone with a brain stem knows that Edge are biased d*ckweeds. Nothing from them (and several other sites) should be taken seriously.

Kamikze095631d ago

"That means more players in multiplayer (60, up from 40), more weapons in the arsenal, more storeys on the bosses, more enemies on the screen, and more options on the menus. More, more, more."

I can't believe they turned this into a bad thing? More? When has more ever been a bad thing (besides last Thanksgiving's pie)? If they said these things about a 360 game they would be praising Bill Gates and the "power" of the 360. This game has a really immersive story with a great multiplayer. I can see where they got the 6/10 from.

Aquanox5632d ago

... But it reflects what has been shown by Sony products so far.

They focus too much into numbers instead of sould and identity of their games. They promise 1080p, 60 - 200 players online, 20 hours of gameplay, etc... numbers, numbers, numbers... and while in a pretty decent amount of cases they deliver, they still fall in the same mistake of losing focus on what makes a game a groundbreaking IP: Substance, the same substance and identity that make Halo and Gears of War milestone titles which each iteration.

InMyOpinion5632d ago

waznotwaz5632d ago

You respect Edges journalistic creditability.News.After giving Resistance 2 a score nearly 3 points below the average, they don't have any journalistic creditability. If they were genuinely down on this game they would have give it a low score.Of 8.They have given it a 6.A 6????What's that all about. Are they mad or do these expect to somehow sell more magazines by alienating all playstation fans.

kwyjibo5632d ago

I cannot believe that anyone can take your argument seriously, your idea of journalistic integrity has been seriously corrupted, and if this is your typical quality of argument, then the extra bubble you have shows the depths of which the N4G audience has fallen to.

For you, journalistic credibility is not about stating opinions. It's about following the crowd. Instead of actively contributing to the Metacritic average, or whatever index you follow, you believe reviewers should try to second guess what everyone else is thinking.

Only, it doesn't stop there, because instead of second guessing what the average will be, you're actually trying to second guess what everyone else thinks the average will be.

Journalistic credibility, and integrity, come from stating your analysis clearly, succinctly and without any consideration from what the consensus might be. In the age of the blog, and the idiotic echo chambers they provide, where users merely restate opinions they read elsewhere, Edge's approach is both old fashioned and a breath of fresh air.

lokiroo4205631d ago (Edited 5631d ago )

kwyjibo their credibility is tainted because there is no way that this game is a 6, how is it that it deviates so far from all other scores, do they think theyre seeing something that nobody else has? Or is it that they reviewed the game knowing what kind of score they were going to give before hand? Like the game or not in now way does it deserve a score like this, you know it I know it, everyone else knows it even edge. This is a stab at somebody and edge is clearly trying to hurt sales or pick up their own sales. Credibility is out the door when you miss the mark so badly, how can you take other scores seriously from them, how can you?

As far as credibility coming from stating things clearly, are you serious? I can clearly state anything, true or not, the clarity of your statements mean nothing when they hold little value or are biased to your own agenda.

kwyjibo5631d ago

No, it's your opinion that this game is not a 6.

It's Edge's opinion that it is. For a publication to be credible, they have to be true to what they believe. If you're grown up with IGN and Gamespot, where awarding everything 8/10 was the de facto standard until very recently, then that's probably a concept that is entirely alien to you.

Reviewers have a duty to state their opinion, whether or not it agrees with the consensus or otherwise. It is not their job to second guess what the Metacritic average is, these are the opinions that actively shape the index average, not the ones that merely follow it.

Edge gave Max Payne 6/10, totally outside of the distribution curve, just as Resistance 2's score is. And you know what? They were right about Max Payne, it was style over substance, over reliant on bullet time special affects to glaze over the quickload happy gameplay. On the other hand, they gave Morrowind 6/10, in which I totally disagree. What I do respect however, is that they're unafraid to air opinions that may lie outside the norm.

You argue that because an opinion lies outside of the bell curve, then the publication has no credibility. That's false, you can apply this to every single publication, at some point, for some games, they will be the outlying opinion. Unless that is, those placid middle of the road 8/10s are all you read.

lokiroo4205631d ago

Blah, blah, blah, this not cannot be opinion without bias, no way in no world is this game an F, 6 out of 10.

My take:

Single player
3, 2, 1

Multiplayer
3, 1, 2

Overall
3, 2, 1

I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.

Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.

Eidolon722d ago

Resistance 1 MP will always be my favorite. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but that was my jam, felt more balance, natural.

Miraak82 722d ago

i have the platinium too , 10k kills in online ranked matches was no joke . Took me 3-4 months straight grinding but it was fun . To put it in perspective you only got like 25 kills per match if you were 1st place every match that's at Least 400 matches in 1st

Sciurus_vulgaris723d ago

I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2

GoodGuy09723d ago

Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.

fr0sty722d ago

Resistance, Warhawk, MAG, Motorstorm, there's so many first party gems on PS3 that Sony has just left to die...

P_Bomb723d ago

Never played Burning Skies but I still have Retribution.

monkey602722d ago

Burning Skies was about 3 hours long and rather inconsequential. You haven't missed anything

porkChop722d ago

Honestly, Burning Skies was shit. There's no two ways about it. At first I thought it looked terrible, then I second guessed myself. Big mistake.

darthv72721d ago

Retribution has this really cool feature where you could use a PS3 to link a controller to it and play. So if you had a 2000 or 3000 hooked to a tv, you can use a real controller. All of this predates the PSP Go's ability to sync a sixaxis to it via bluetooth.

Yui_Suzumiya722d ago

Why Resistance Was So Incredible

While the studio is best known for Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet, and Clank, and Spider-Man back on the PS3 the studio broke from creating platformers and made one of the highest regarded science-fiction first-person shooters of all time. This was Resistance and it remains one of Sony's most acclaimed and dormant franchises.

Really wish Insomniac would bring back Resistance!

darthv721078d ago

Agreed. Until they do a new entry, I'd love to get the two portable games remade into console versions. Maybe in a nice compilation with the mainline titles.

monkey6021078d ago

Burning Skies wasn't a great game.
It was only a couple of hours long and there was nothing memorable about it.

I'd love a new entry

darthv721077d ago

^monkey, hence why it should be remade into a better version.

SullysCigar1079d ago

Resistance 3's campaign was gorgeous for the time - and an awesome game to boot.

monkey6021078d ago

I remember being put off by it because McHale wasn't the MC but it turned out to be my favourite campaign

CBaoth1078d ago

by and large though the Resistance IP featured many protagonists (4 altogether I think if you include the portables). One of the reasons I enjoyed it was not being shackled to individual story arcs. Very rare for a major franchise.

Army_of_Darkness1077d ago

My favorite resistance game as well! It seriously had creepy, scary a$$ moments bro! It made me want an action horror game from insomniac!

Mr_cheese1078d ago

Remember playing this through online co op with the move controller and gun attachment! What a game!

BlackIceJoe1078d ago

I've said in the past I'd like to see this series return and have it take place years later, like in the present.

I'll give you an example if I'm not mistaken the last game ended in the 50s, so if it was to take place some time in the 2020s you'd have an opportunity to see how the world changed after the fall of Chimera and all the new technology that came out of that war.

Just like in our universe we all know WW2 happened, but we never experienced it, so if the next Resistance game takes place years later so too would people in that universe know a war look place against the Chimera, they just wouldn't know what it really was like.

So getting to see how that universe would respond to the Chimera reemerging would be interesting.

Imagine a little kid talking with his grandfather about the war and the kid just thinks it was just a made up bed time horror story and what was said was worse than what really took place, but now that the Chimera come back the kid will find out why years later the old timer adults were still waiting for the Chimera to return.

I think there is great potential for this series still and I really believe the best way forward for Resistance is make it have a time jump too.

So hopefully this series will return.

Dragonopolis1078d ago

Great Idea. I'd play that version.

Resistance was a great game and of all the remasters.... I would play a great remastered version of resistance series as well

waverider1078d ago

I was blown away when i played for the first time Resistance on the PS3. Great Game. Also liked very much an played for hundred of hours the Co-op of R2. The SP campaign of R3 is also excelent. I really hope that Sony and Insomniac annouced the Remaster of the Series and a new chapter. They got story to do that.

Jambola121078d ago

Resistance 2 was one of the first few games i played on ps3 and I loved it, would definitely finish that again :D

Chevalier1078d ago

I loved all the Resistance games. But part 2 online was amazing. The Marksmen for the Spec Ops type class when it was fully upgraded was such an amazing weapon. Oh man I wish they release all the games again and let us play part 2 online again.

Insomniac didn’t feel all enthusiastic at continuing the series after the third installment

I don’t see how them getting bought out would encourage them to make a fourth game when they could work on another new IP or a sequel to Ratchet & Clank or Spider-Man.

Plus the third game ended on a deserved bittersweet note with a sense of finality against the Chimera. It’d be soul crushing even for this series to make all those sacrifices go to waste

purple1011707d ago

Nah. Just a new killzone from guerilla games please.

Let insomniac do a platform game..

Gaming1011707d ago

Thing is, there can be multiple teams doing multiple projects. One Insomniac team can do Spiderman, another can do Ratchet and Clank, another can do Resistance. It just depends on whether Sony is willing to grow the team enough and pay for more offices to do more work.

Fluttershy771707d ago

@Gaming101 multiple teams like Bioware doing multiple projects

NiteX1707d ago

The last Killzone game was lame. And there's no doubt Horizon 2 is there next game.

Gaming1011707d ago

Fluttershy, Insomniac isn't Bioware, dummy.
There are plenty of publishers with multiple teams running multiple projects. Sony has several studios with numerous ongoing projects and teams. I don't know why this is such a difficult concept for plebs to grasp but the disagrees keep coming in lol

I prefer another Killzone over another Resistance

Brave_Losers_Unite1707d ago

I dont. I love killing Chimera

UltraNova1707d ago

I want a semi-open world(think GoW) greedy, violent and super heavy atmosphere Killzone with KZ2's controls/feel with the best weapon audio possible and full on stealth elements for additional choice of approach.

As for Resistance (boy do I love this IP) I think Insomniac could do this game justice if they rebooted or continued the story with a different character. I just crave for Insomniac's weapon design ingenuity! As for multiplayer, they can go all out on a BR mode with some asymmetric PvPvE elements thrown in there like huge Chimera beasts dropping into the map at some random point and the team who kills it gets legendary loot.
Man just thinking about a modern Resistance game with a proper AAA BR made by Insomniac makes me salivate.

PhoenixUp1707d ago

I love doing so too, but there has to be context behind it.

Killing the Helghast for example is entertaining gameplay wise as much as it is narrative wise because of all the lore behind it all.

The Chimera were said to have been defeated for good after killing of converting 90% of humanity’s population as well dramatically changing earth’s climate. If after all that the Chimera came back even stronger than ever, then would be far too bleak for there to ever be any reasonable chance of defeating them for good.

Movefasta19931707d ago

Killzone has one game that's very good(2), resistance has three.

PhoenixUp1707d ago

Dafuq? Killzone 3 was received just as well as Resistance 3 was.

And Killzone: Shadow Fall sold more than the last mainline Resistance game, showing that there’s more interest in the former series than the latter

CanadianTurtle1706d ago

KillZone Shadowfall was a borefest. GG has wrote themselves into a hole with the story for that game. I don't know how they're going to fix that.

Resistance has much better gameplay, world building, story, enemy designs, weapon variety, campaigns, etc. In terms of campaigns, Resistance is leagues better. But in terms of online multiplayer, I'd give that trophy to KZ.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 1706d ago
-Foxtrot1707d ago

I'd like to see them reboot it and go back to what Fall of Man was like

They could always do a reboot retelling like they've already done with Ratchet and Clank then do something completely new with a sequel

I'd love if they could restructure Nathan Hale and make him a better all rounded, developed character spanning the entire trilogy. At the end of the second one he could be transported to their world or something

Resistance 3 had a nice ending that closed the book on everything so I wouldn't want them to spoilt that, too many games come back and do the whole "Oh that great evil you got rid of? Yeah it's back"

Yobo51707d ago (Edited 1707d ago )

I'm still amazed at how little recognition is given to the first resistance from "fans" esp the narration of RFOM during custscenes. Cornelia Hayes did an excellent job as Rachel Parker she gave the world an authentic sense of atmospheric urgency and dread that I haven't seen matched since Halo, It was even more engrossing at times then gears. The multiplater on Resitance 2 though just looked like saints row 3 version of gears...

Ah RFOM! The multiplayer was SO smooth at the time. Even with a 350 mo- 500 mo connection. That was my first online experience back then!

Knushwood Butt1707d ago

Agree. I think the series has run its course. I'd rather see a great new IP.

badz1491707d ago (Edited 1707d ago )

they can start with an easy one. Resistance Trilogy Remaster for PS4 and includes trophy patch for RFoM. there is so much win in THAT. BUT...ONLY if they let us have back Resistance 2 MP...THE WHOLE THING!

that would be one hell of a housewarming gift for the fans!

"It’d be soul crushing even for this series to make all those sacrifices go to waste"

I have always felt that there is room for more. For instance the Chimera could have sent out a distress signal just before the tower/ship blew up to the real threat to humanity or what if thanks to the virus Nathan Hale somehow survived?

There are five games in the Resistance series. I think they could at least take the two portable ones and give them a proper big screen remake, like the GoW portables on the PS3 got.

No. let them work on what they want. I loved Resistance, but Insomniac proved they can work on New Ip and are hitting their Prime with the release of Spiderman, so let them work on what they want, and have a smaller 3rd party remake or remaster Resistance, and see if there's an audience for it.

Fist4achin1706d ago

Agreed. A new IP would be welcome. They've proven they can make a solid FPS, so let's make a new one!

xX-oldboy-Xx1707d ago (Edited 1707d ago )

Insomniac should do whatever they want, they deserve every freedom to deliver the game they want.

SyntheticForm1707d ago

This.

When developers do what they want their products turn out better and we all benefit. When they're ready to do Resistance they'll do Resistance.

TheUndertaker851707d ago

That's why they were independent and claimed to want that independence. If they wanted that freedom they should've stuck to their guns. Not took a payoff.

SyntheticForm1707d ago (Edited 1707d ago )

You're making it sound nefarious when this is hardly the case. There's a mutual trust here.

They know they'll be free to do what they want under Sony. Total autonomy - of course not, but Sony will likely approve and back anything they do.

This isn't to say Sony won't have any say - they'll likely encourage the immediate continuation of Spider-Man, but I doubt they'll mind and the fans sure won't.

Overall Insomniac is happy and trust Sony, or they wouldn't have taken the deal.

xX-oldboy-Xx1707d ago

TheUndertaker85 - Haha, c'mon mate - Sony will let them do what they want. This acquisition makes sense on every level.

There needs to be mutual respect between publisher and developer.

They'll find that respect at WWS, this is good for Insomniac. WWS has a huge talent pool and they share knowledge and resources amongst each other.

Very excited to see what Insomniac can achieve under WWS.

“ "It's hard for people in any industry to accept change, especially when you've been focused on doing things one way for so long," said Ted Price, Insomniac's president and CEO, in a recent interview with Polygon. "But as an industry, we're being forced to become comfortable [with], or at least accept, that change will be a constant for us."”

“ According to Price, Insomniac's independence is crucial to its ability to continually adapt to changing circumstances and try new things in all areas of game development. "We've always loved the opportunity to experiment with ... early on, game design models; now, delivery mechanisms and new platforms," he explained. And Insomniac's corporate culture ensures its employees are always challenged to "think creatively about not just game design, but how [they're] delivering [their] games and what audiences [they're] addressing with [their] games."”

“ Insomniac attempted to combine its history of creating hardcore games with a new platform, Facebook, when it began developing Outernauts in 2010. Price explained that the studio wanted to try a new business model but still deliver an experience that core gamers would appreciate. The company turned to Electronic Arts for help with the first half of that equation, and it didn't work out because, as Price put it, "the monetization and viral features that we had put in turned off a lot of the audience that we were hoping to attract."”

“ "I'm very proud of what we did with both those games because we took creative risks," he said. "And I think as a developer, taking creative risks is something you have to continue to do, even if people are telling you that all they want is the same recycled stuff over and over again."”

I think he means that sony shouldn't be too involved when they are making a game, just trust them to deliver if they want to make a new ip

Fingers crossed for a RFoM remaster.

xX-oldboy-Xx1707d ago

Fair chance any remaster would be done by BluePoint. They've done amazing work this gen.
