This is a game that absolutely needs to be played in VR to get the full appreciation of what it is and what it does.

VR has health limitations ... not everybody can enjoy

CrimsonWing6925d ago

I mean, that's kind of life in generally, amirite?

Venoxn4g25d ago

I agree with you. This game is built for VR, still one of the greatest VR experiences.

Guess I'll find out when it releases on PS VR 2.

If not, then the title will be relegated to those with a decent PC capable of playing the title. But I think I've played enough VR games to know that it's subjective on being the best representation of VR games. Even it was built with limitations that other games surpassed either through movement or gameplay.

The question that should be asked is, "What has Valve done since then?" One game is not enough and surely not enough to buy the expensive Index.

Vanfernal60d ago

I've played both, and even though Half-Life Alyx us really good, I feel like Resident Evil Village VR was overall the better VR experience. Half-life Alyx can feel a little VR tech demo-ish some times.

lucasnooker60d ago

There’s no way a game built from the ground up in VR is worse than a game that was made in VR as an additive…

Clearly never played Alyx.

Dude all of Ravenholm in HL2 is a tech demo. HL2 is still one of the greatest games of all time.

If only Sony would commit and let Insomniac develop a full Resistance game on PSVR2 😑

-Foxtrot60d ago

Full on VR only? No

VR compatible? Yes

Inverno60d ago

I disagree, I think they need to do something fully dedicated to VR and not just an option. I'm sure it'd disappoint Resistance fans to some capacity but a PSVR exclusive just makes the most sense to me.

-Foxtrot60d ago (Edited 60d ago )

No

Sorry but no

If Insomniac is going to do a brand new Resistance game then it needs to be a game everyone can play

There's nothing worse then waiting years and years for a new instalment and having it locked behind something like VR.

It's a dick move. It's called options.

generic-user-name60d ago

"It's a dick move."

Nonsense. While I do want to see more hybrid games with the options like you suggest; to claim it would be a dick move for Sony/Insomniac to take full advantage of their hardware by building a game that's ground-up for VR is crazy, especially if the alternate is to let the IP rot, like Half Life would have if VR didn't give Alyx a reason to exist.

-Foxtrot59d ago

It's not nonsense

It's not a new IP built for VR

It's a huge franchise a lot and I mean a lot of people have been wanting to see returned to for years, to have them finally bring it out and be like "Oh yeah sorry VR owners only" would be a kick to the teeth. It's exactly the same for Alyx, especially considering the ending of Alyx is now SUPER vital for HL3.

If it was a spin off game not handled by Insomniac then fair enough but a main game by them, no, it needs to be able to be played by everyone.

"if the alternate is to let the IP rot, like Half Life would have if VR didn't give Alyx a reason to exist"

Oh please, totally different

Valve let it rot because they simply couldn't be arsed, the only reason it exists is to push their own VR, they needed a system seller and obviously they chose Half Life. The franchise didn't need VR

Valve could have brought out a new Half Life game, a standard, traditional styled game and it would have sold millions and most likely been critically acclaimed.

I'm honestly shocked people are such arseholes they'd want a much loved franchise to be VR only and cut off a ton of fans "just because". How selfish can you get when those on the other side are just like "VR optional" to cater to both audiences, it's not like anyone is saying "F*** VR"

Epicor59d ago

I agree that VR compatible hybrid games make most sense when it comes to big studios and their AAA games. But I totally disagree with your reasoning. The reasoning is purely financial. Nothing to do with "being a dick move". Quite opposite tbh, developing purely for VR can be considered almost as a fan service towards PSVR as the development can be hardly justified financially. As an owner of PSVR and PSVR2 I surely would like to have more VR-only experiences as they tend to take advantage of all the possibilities better. But I'm pretty sure the biggest future hits will be hybrid experiences as they make most sense and are less gimmicky. I really want Sony to push their 1st party studios on delivering all their future games with VR option included. This would really sell the systems.

generic-user-name57d ago

"to have them finally bring it out and be like "Oh yeah sorry VR owners only" would be a kick to the teeth."

I don't see how. Gaming is an expensive hobby. The last Killzone was a PS4 exclusive, was that a kick in the teeth to the PS3 owners of Killzone 2 and 3? This is the same entitlement you hear from last gen gamers trying to hold back the next gen by complaining it's not on their platform.

"Valve let it rot because they simply couldn't be arsed, the only reason it exists is to push their own VR, they needed a system seller and obviously they chose Half Life."

This is one of those 'I know better than the developers' statements. They said many years ago, there'd be no more Half Life unless they could do something different with it. VR gave them the opportunity to do something different, so yes, Half Life did need VR in this instance.

"How selfish can you get when those on the other side are just like "VR optional" to cater to both audiences, it's not like anyone is saying "F*** VR"

It's selfish/ignorant to not acknowledge that there's a difference between a traditional game having an optional VR mode and a game having been built ground-up for VR, where core game design elements would/should be drastically different.

I hope a PSVR2 port can be negotiated considering all of the PS games that made it to Steam eventually…

Tacoboto60d ago

Well, Sony isn't even negotiating with themselves to port over any of their acclaimed VR1 titles to fill in some gaps. Meta Quest got Iron Man last year but VR2 has neither that nor any sign of Astro Bot Rescue Mission.

A port of Quest's RE4 would've been nice too at launch. Easy win to show off native 120hz rendering.
