I played Xenoblade just because I heard its combat system is highly similar to FFXII’s.

The evolution of the combat system through the series hasn’t hindered my enjoyment of earlier titles, so idk how it’d affect enjoyment of other series

Shiken1787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

I enjoy both just fine. Shame the author does not know the difference between an action RPG and a regular one.

Babadook71787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

FF7R isn't an action rpg. Its a turn based RPG with minor action elements. Its also an amazing update to the rpg formula. I agree with twinfinite to that extent.

luckytrouble1787d ago

FF7R is 150% an action RPG that simply has some turn based friendly elements lol

It's like saying Kingdom Hearts isn't an action RPG.

Hayter4561787d ago

You still parroting that it is a turn based game.

“ WELCOME TO MIDGAR – FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE AVAILABLE NOW Highly Anticipated Action RPG Arrives”

This is from Square Enix own press release. I don’t know why you think FF7R is a turn based game? Have you ever played a turn based RPG?

UglyGeezer1787d ago

I think it's more of an ARPG with ARPGTB elements insofar as it has ARPGMMO elements ..........shoot me

Babadook71787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

It has an ATB gauge just like the original, the action literally stops (or nearly stops) for these decisions based on the passing of time as well as attacking to fill it up faster. That fact is counter to an action game. It is most often described as an RPG.

Genre: Role Playing Game (RPG)

Click on the description given by the developers and we see this.
With a mix of traditional command-based combat and real-time action

The remake literally has every element of the original FF7 combat with the ADDITION of some action based elements that serve mostly to pass time for the ATB. That does nothing to diminish its status as an RPG.

Shiken1787d ago

@Babadook7

I bet you do agree with them, since you don't seem to know the difference between action and traditional RPGs either.

Babadook71787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

Some of you are showing not only your ignorance, but your bias as well. So let's get into this.

Is FF13 an action RPG?

No. It's a turn based JRPG.

Is this gameplay based on that combat system?

Almost everyone recognizes that yes it is. But with additional basic action elements.
https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

Therefore FF7 remake is literally an RPG (specifically JRPG) with action elements. Not a full fledged Action RPG. It is derived from an RPG and has turn based elements and real time elements. Dark souls and Zelda are examples of action RPGs. FF7R is not.

I wouldn't say Xenoblade has a regular RPG battle system. It's more like an MMORPG.

Shiken1787d ago

My point is that it is not an action RPG. But no, it is not turn based. I would not call it MMORPG either though, as the battle mechanics get much deeper in Xenoblade than any MMO has. Kind of just does its own thing really.

Immagaiden1787d ago

Both of them are action RPGs

Fraggle19871787d ago

Ff12 battle system made xenoblade hard to enjoy. Basically xenoblade is a poor mans ff12. Also of course ff7 remake is different but much better too.

esherwood1787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

As a fan of rpg’s I’ve always heard of final fantasy games but everyone I try I don’t understand the hype. I’m liking xenoblade way more then I liked ff15 and every other one I tried. Xenoblades story I feel is way better then anything I’ve seen in a final fantasy game. Xb2 I watched just watched the 30+ hours of cinimatics on YouTube and it’s incredible

Hotabang1787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

Try ff's 6-10
Ignore everything after 10

Antnee5341787d ago

You did your self a big disservice not actually playing it

Outlawzz1787d ago

I prefer xenoblades battle system actually. Haven't played ff7 but i know enough to know their not even related

averagejoe261787d ago

You prefer one and have never played the other?

What a moronic thing to say.

Outlawzz1787d ago

@averagejoe26
I was referring to ff12, there were three games referred to in the original post *facepalm*

Calm the salt there friend, you comment just to make a useless insult.

Hayter4561787d ago

Xenoblade Chronicles - 92% Metacritic
FF7 Remake - 87% Metacritic

The author needs to learn about the differences between a action RPG and a traditional RPG. Author seems like more hack and slash gameplay and most likely hasn’t played that many JRPGs.

TricksterArrow1787d ago

You'd have a point if you didn't asspull those Metascores to try and prove something. Mass Effect 2 has a 96, so I guess people prefer an Action RPG afterall? Wtf does that even prove?

Hayter4561787d ago

Persona 5 - 95% Metacritic

That is a JRPG. What are you trying to prove with Mass Effect? Some people like JRPGs some like Action and some both. Xenoblade is not a action RPG.

Babadook71787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

@Hayter
Thats the original.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitve Edition- 89% OpenCritic
FF7 Remake - 88% OpenCritic

FF7R isn't an action rpg. Its a turn based RPG with minor action elements.

Hayter4561787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

“ Final Fantasy VII Remake is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix” Wiki.

It definitely is not turn based. Even though you have to attack and build your ATB to use special attacks. You don’t wait your turn to attack neither does the AI. I am aware it has a mode where you can play it as turn based.

As for the Xenoblade it is still the same game.

Babadook71787d ago (Edited 1787d ago )

It is certainly turn based with action elements. The main strategy is turn based.

You can't pretend the old reviews are more applicable than the new ones. Old reviews are compared to their time period.

Hayter4561787d ago

Here you go buddy from Square Enix own press release.

“WELCOME TO MIDGAR – FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE AVAILABLE NOW Highly Anticipated Action RPG Arrives”

Don’t know why you thought it was turn based?...

averagejoe261787d ago

Nope.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (which is the game we're talking about) - 88%

Nice try though, as if these scores even matter. Other comments have already torn your logic to shreds.

1 - 3 are connected. Idk if X is connected since I haven't beaten the epilogue in X yet. X will probably be connected.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

CUnit12312352d ago

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!

Chrono Trigger at 31 makes my heart hurt.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list at all is a crime.
