The Best New IPs of the Generation

Seasoned Gaming: "Believe it or not, it’s been nearly seven years since the the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One kicked off the eighth generation of consoles. In that time, we’ve played some truly incredible and memorable titles. As we approach the end of the generation, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the best new IPs that have been introduced over that time."

I know I’m going to get a digital beheading for this, but I thought Recore had some serious potential.

I really enjoyed that game.

mandf1422d ago

As long as you enjoyed it. The only problem record had was fans overhyped it because it was a small line up. Small developers should never have that kind of pressure. Not every game has to have a mega cult following and sell 10mil.

"Not every game has to have a mega cult following and sell 10mil."
Very true. Because alongside new IP's like HZD, Hellblade, and Titanfall (2), I've enjoyed games like Shadow Tactics and Talos Principle immensely.

Yodasfavoritesoda1421d ago

I agree the ip still has potential. They should make a sequel with a bigger budget and more time in the oven. Look at how much better the definitive version was than the vanilla.

Ausbo1421d ago

Recore had potential, but I couldn’t finish it. Some good mechanics in there though

Glad you enjoyed it, ignore the trolls.

As for best new IPs, it has to be Bloodborne and Sekiro for me.

Edit

Maybe GoT will make my list too, we shall see.

Bloodborne and HZD are two of my favorite new IPs to come out of this gen. Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk will probably end up there as well.

Imo Cuphead, Hollow Knight, Ori, Hellblade, Titanfall, Shovel Knight, Sekiro and Splatoon are the things I most enjoyed this gen when it comes to new IP's.

roadkillers1421d ago

Splatoon and cuphead were gold

KiRBY30001421d ago

My best new IPs:

Bloodborne, Sekiro, Horizon, Titanfall, The Witness, Hollow Knight, Outer Wilds, Inside, Cuphead, Disco Elysium, The Talos Principle, SOMA, Rocket League, Invisible Inc

most wanted: Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima

I personally loved HellBlade: SS. There were a lot of people that couldn't dig it and I understand that. There wasn't a lot to it; you had the basic combat and a bunch of runic alignment puzzles.

Still, I really enjoyed the world, narrative, and storytelling, and thought the experience was great overall, but I'm hoping that Hellblade 2 just gives us a lot more actual game, and ditches those puzzles.

This could be a really great new IP and it could be a big one if that's what they're going for, which I hope they are.

While I love the game, I understand the perspective. I think one of the obvious things they need to do for with II is address the combat. It wasn't bad, but it just didn't have depth.

I personally value the game because of it's storytelling being atypical of what you usually get for games, and I was hooked all the way through. I'd actually prefer they keep puzzles, but, as mentioned earlier, have the overall activities skewed in favour of combat.

RamRod881421d ago

There were a few gems this generation, but I think it just goes to show how sparse of new great IP's there were compared to last generation and prior. To be fair, game development takes longer and cost more than before.

Deathshadow901421d ago

Bloodborne & Horizon: Zero Dawn.

The Order: 1886 also deserve a special mention. It had excellent graphics, story, great characters, interesting lore & superb production values. If Ready at Dawn can improve its shortcomings such as repetitive boss fights, include a wider variety of unlockable weapons & short game length, the sequel had tons of potential to shine.

Imagine how jaw dropping & insane the graphics will be on PS5.

Movefasta19931421d ago

I had a blast playing the order, I honestly felt I had just reached the half way point once I reached the end, the length of the game hurts it for sure, but that story and gunplay is fire, they really need to give it a sequel.

Mr Marvel1421d ago

The Order 1886 was great, very under-rated imo.
A nice easy Platinum Trophy too.

Kabaneri1421d ago

There better be a Bloodborne 2.

rainslacker1421d ago (Edited 1421d ago )

The Order was pretty good for what was there, outside a couple quibbles. It had it's failings, but to me, it just felt unfinished.

Otherwise, H:ZD has been my favorite new IP this gen. I'd also throw in Until Dawn.
