How Mobile Gaming is Replacing Console Gaming

For most people, the idea, or certainly the image, of gaming is dominated by consoles and PC gaming. However, that image is changing, as is the nature of gaming itself.

Mobile gaming will never replace console gaming. Keep dreaming lol

UnSelf1860d ago

I think in 20 years consoles and mobile will be one in the same; a console that houses all the power and the wireless mobile that allows you to play your VR any and everywhere

20 years everything will be streamed.

Man....haven't heard this mobile replacing console gaming(or PC gaming) since around the beginning of this gen, where console sales actually went up YOY after a whole prior generation of being told by analysts, and some stupid people in forums, that mobile was going to kill consoles.

I'm feeling all nostalgic and stuff.

Facts: The two markets aren't the same, and they are both successful. They have different target audiences, and different paradigms for software release. One thing does not have to replace the other, and I thought this argument had died years ago.

The Wii, X360, and PS3 combined for about 350 mln consoles sold.

The Switch, XBO, and PS4 are combining for about 250 mln consoles sold.

I'm not say these people all went mobile. But, consoles did not sell as much this generation as the last one.

that is pretty much only the xbox fault all consoles seleld pretty wel playstation beat the previous gen. not the ps2 ofcourse. i think the xbox made alot of people switch to PC and those people you arent counting because you are only going of on console sales but not the increase of pc gamers that cam after the xbox one release.

@demonseye
The fact is overall console sales are dramatically down this generation.

There are various factors for that, but one factor is that things are changing.

It is funny I have many TVs in my house and lots of privacy in each room. Yet, my kids pick up their tablets and laptops and often prefer to stream on those devices even though all the TVs are setup to stream the same sites.

What that tells me is that people prefer to enjoy entertainment how they prefer at that moment. Gaming would be the same way if you could get the same experience on other devices, but gaming has traditionally needed more horsepower, a controller, and preferably a large screen. But what happens when your phone has the horsepower, it is super high resolution, and they solve the controller issue?

I have seen this articles for years and in the end it's always the same. Fishful thinking.

I never think of one replacing the other. I do think of them complimenting each other though. There are times i just want to play a portable / mobile game and there are times i want to play a console game. I think it's fair to accept both for what they are. Just extensions to each other.

It's 2020, and it's time to stop. No seriously, stop.

Don't forget they've put a lot of these on gamepass and ps plus so you can add that money to it. Good to see Sega going strong
