Developed to devour your Teraflops.

Nitrowolf21861d ago

Now, this is how you do a showcase! That was freak'n amazing, and done so on the PlayStation 5? This wasn't even by Sony, imagine what their first-party offering is going to be pushing

SyntheticForm1861d ago

Great point about first-party.

Yeah this is really impressive, and well presented.

Looking forward to the future.

outsider16241861d ago

Jesus Freaking Christ man!!!!! I know it's a tech demo and all...but by God, imagine what Sony's first party studios can do with this tech.

God damn!!! This is how you do it. Next Gen starts when PS5 says so?

darthv721861d ago

Hot DAMN!!! I can just imagine how Gears 6 will look using UE5.

b163o11861d ago

Looks amazing, I cant help but to wonder what uncharted 4 would've looked like on the Ps5 now....

TGGJustin1861d ago

Yep Sony first party will be making even better looking stuff than this. Got to love the haters downvoting you too.

Unspoken1861d ago (Edited 1861d ago )

Let the uninformed gamer commence and say Unreal game engine is nothing but fluff!

Unreal Engine has been and is leading the pack in game developed since inception. This is next gen.

I can't wait to see this on PC at 4k/120fps/atmos....

darthv721861d ago (Edited 1861d ago )

Sony first party usually use their own engines but maybe this means they will switch to UE5 for more of their games. Only Days gone is a sony studio game that used UE4. Every other big game had its own dedicated engine. MS games used UE for many of its games and they all looked good (Gears 4 & 5 being the best looking). With Sony onboard with UE, game development should be easier and quicker.

umair_s511861d ago

That was awesome. This is something that we've never seen this gen. Bring on PS5 & Series X.

Imortus_san1861d ago

This is 30fps and 1440p on PS5.

mandingo1861d ago

I guess a tech demo is better than showing real games. Who knew?

Neonridr1861d ago

I think this is a great showcase for BOTH systems. No need to try to make this one sided over the other. UE5 is going to be able to allow devs to create some amazingly detailed worlds.

win for gamers

leahcim1861d ago

Cannot wait for GOD OF WAR 2ND!

NewMonday1861d ago

@Neonridr

XboxSX can't handle the fast texture loading for the last sequence.

PepsivsCoke1861d ago

@ Mandigo -No, showing a playable demo is better than showing a bunch of CG for "real games".

Funny they talk about how incredibly detailed the environments are.. The character animation looks terrible.. The hair movements and the clothes movements are everything but realistic. Feet steps do not match stairs 100%

CaptainHenry9161860d ago

I wonder how the new version of Decima will look on the PS5

Babadook71860d ago (Edited 1860d ago )

I would bet Epic was a key developer that Mark Cerny talked to when creating PS5. Which is very likely why PS5 specs REQUIRED at least a 5 GB/s SSD.

zahdab1860d ago

unreal demos are always a tech showcase ... even looking at unreal 4 tech demos right now, they surpass most of what we can got on ps4 and xbox, look a the elemental and chaos demos for unreal 4

Army_of_Darkness1860d ago

UE5 is truly amazing! So I can't imagine what naughty dog and guerilla games engines will be capable of since that's usually the case in every generation... UE looks great at first, until Sony's first party comes in and blows everything away.

DarXyde1860d ago

Unreal Engine 5 looks very impressive, but on this point, I'm more curious to see what Sony's first party studio engines can do. A next generation Decima would be fascinating.

DJStotty1860d ago

@Outsider

Unreal engine 5 is on all platforms.

Next-gen starts when the consoles are out, not when Sony says so.

SyntheticForm1861d ago

These are the kind of visuals that FFVIIR deserved.

RpgSama1861d ago

@SyntheticForm

There's always the eventual patch for next-gen and of course FFVII:R 2

1861d ago
NXFather1860d ago

Way better than what xbox did so far but, not as good as ps3 to 4 on this one.

ITPython1860d ago

Days Gone with Unreal engine 4 is, IMO, easily one of the best looking (in top 5) games of this generation by far on console. It is crazy what Sony Bend was able to pull off with it on the PS4 Pro. Though admittingly if my PS4 had wings, It would probably fly away while playing Days Gone. As the fans go into super-hyper-jet mode 100% whenever I play. Had to place a vibration-absorbing pad under my PS4 (meant for large generators on rooftops), otherwise the whole second floor of the house would be audibly vibrating 🤣

Sony first party team sitting in the corner ready to devour the PS5 😀

BLizardXD1861d ago (Edited 1861d ago )

"the demo was reportedly rendering at 1440p using dynamic resolution and without the next-gen bells and whistles like hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Epic told Eurogamer, and at what looks like only 30fps."
https://www.theverge.com/20...

i think UE5 just devoured the ps5 though. what does that mean for ray tracing? 1440p 20fps?
how will the ps5 fare with ray tracing enabled i wonder. and everyone was talking about 60fps too for the console.

Tech51861d ago (Edited 1861d ago )

it's great that we are hearing more about Unreal's next jump in technology.
somewhat though disappointed that developers still have yet to scratch the surface of UE4's most advanced features. water and destruction physics. (which are from 4 years ago) plus the new hairworks, and ray tracing.
developers are just beginning to utilize tessellation (which is from almost 2 decades ago)
game development needs to be a lot faster no doubt to keep up with these new features.

as for the ps5. it displays the engine quite well. i'm pretty sure also the next gen will not be able to do all games at 60fps. as we also see here. developers will still have to make choices on what features to use and at which settings.

GTgamer1861d ago

@BLizardXD
Dude it's a tech demo running on a early PS5 dev kit and your worried that it dropped frames 🤔 history shows that unreal engine demos gets surpassed over time especially with further optimization from developers, But ain't no way in hell you expect a game that looks like this to run at 4k 60fps with Ray tracing throw that out the window right now neither console will do that. Anyway this impresses me way more than those ray tracing demos on current gen visuals games so if some devs wanna go this route I'm all for it. We already came to the conclusion that some devs rather go the graphics heavy route and those games will be 30fps as expected and I'm not mad about it, I'm not rushing out to buy a console that plays current gen looking games at 4k 60fps if that's the case I would of just invested in a PC and called it a day, I want games that make my jaw drop and I know sony's first party team will surpass this demo don't know how long it will take but they will.

fr0sty1861d ago

Global illumination is a form of ray tracing... at least make sure you know what you are talking about before you post.

In order for GI to work, the light "rays" must be "traced" as they bounce around the room, enabling them to light up nearby surfaces. For instance, if I put a bright red ball next to a wall and shine a spotlight on it, that light will bounce off the red ball and slightly color the wall next to it with red light.

The other benefits of ray tracing are perfect reflections and far more detailed shadows, which can blur as the object moves farther away from the light source. PBR textures benefit from ray tracing as well, since it is a form of physical rendering.

So, it is "partially raytraced". They aren't calculating reflections and shadows, or at least we don't know they are (those shadows looked damn impressive, as they said, down to the pixel level), but we are getting one of the most important factors that adds a lot to the realism of ray traced rendering, Global Illumination.

milohighclub1861d ago (Edited 1861d ago )

I think it's the exact opposite tbh, built to get the most outta your terraflops would be more accurate. Virtual texturing is already amazing really looking forward to check out virtual geometry.

Also finally getting convolution reverb!!!! Cant believe how far behind gaming has been in regards to audio.

anubusgold1861d ago

Audio is fine companies got lazy. The sound in older games was far better now you just get a bunch of sound pollution . And Microsoft turned xbox live voice chat down to crap the first xbox had better voice quality.

milohighclub1860d ago (Edited 1860d ago )

Devs didnt get lazy, they just haven't been provided the right tools, until now.
Wait until you have convolution reverb in your games, audio from real life locations it will change everything. No point having photorealistic visuals with inaccurate audio as your brain will see (or hear) through the bullshit.

Say they took an impulse response from the Sistine chapel, when they add that response data it results in reflections that are accurate to the Sistine chapel. Do you understand how much this will aid towards tricking your brain into believing you're actually on location? A more immersive enhancement than raytracing imo.

Combining binural with convolution on vr with megascan environments would be insane. No gamer outside of a studio has experienced this so to say audio in games if fine and devs got lazy is simply just an uneducated comment.

This was a lot more interesting than Epic's normal show off tech demo trailers. Showed practical real time application in a pseudo game play scenario. Very well done, and good at describing what was happening with the changes.

rlow11861d ago

Agreed, usually they don't go into this type of detail or length so it was nice they gave us something so meaty.

IRetrouk1861d ago (Edited 1861d ago )

Honestly didnt expect a ps5 showing, like you say its usually not said what the tech demos run off(other than massive pc power), cant believe that's a fully playable demo running realtime on a proper ps5 dev kit😀

russo1211861d ago (Edited 1861d ago )

OMG! Mark Cerny is a genius, SSD here makes a HUGE difference (when flying trough the canyon). I'm speechless!

rainslacker1860d ago

@Retrouk

Even if it wasn't shown from PS5 footage, it still would have been interesting because Unreal tends to follow console tech with each new generations. They do add on for PC as things become available, but this time of the pre-gen is where you start to see what kinds of things will be made. In the past, they've always done really beautiful tech demos, without much explanation outside of documentation or maybe a supplimental video, but the graphics quality was set to the max, which required pretty powerful rigs. Those demos were made to show the potential of the engine, not necessarily what every game would have.

@Russo

yeah, the ability to stream in assets pretty much on the fly cuts out a huge bottleneck, which is basically how many assets can be stored in memory for any given scene segment.

@rlow

Yeah, they did a good job explaining, while showing. It wasn't super technical, but it also wasn't dumbed down for those with less than layman intelligence.

LOGICWINS1861d ago

Dude...if this is what Unreal Engine 5 can do, imagine what the the upgraded Decima Engine can do!

The fact that they used the PS5 to demo this speaks volumes. Guess there must be some truth to devs preferring the PS5.

"the demo was reportedly rendering at 1440p using dynamic resolution and without the next-gen bells and whistles like hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Epic told Eurogamer, and at what looks like only 30fps."
https://www.theverge.com/20...

Sprucegoose771861d ago

The difference is minimal. They will both have the minor little pros and cons. If you think 12TF over 10.9 TF is going to make a massive difference if any with all the different factors going on with both systems you are in for a rude awakening!

PepsivsCoke1861d ago

I think part of EPICs demo was that Sony was the highest platform. So......instead, let's see if Series X can run games as well as the PS5?

CaptainHenry9161860d ago (Edited 1860d ago )

@DrakeFan1

You forgot this part in the article

"That’s because it was designed to show off Epic’s engine tech without needing think about elements like resolution and performance, which will be tradeoffs next-gen developers will have to make regardless of which engine they use or what hardware the game runs on." In fact, Sweeney says Epic has been working closely with Sony for years now on ensuring UE5 can best utilize the upcoming PlayStation's unique architecture."

milohighclub1860d ago

Shame the rest of the sx is a bottleneck. Playstation games will look better once again.

Its 2020 mate, Microsoft is irrelevant in the gaming market. can you stop bringing them up every sony thread? You sound like you wanna suck Phil's cock. It really is very sad.

milohighclub1860d ago

Lol "if that is the case, the XSX will easily beat those specs."

Lol the next box is marginally more powerful gpu wise but the rest of the system is no where near sonys.

If owt it's gonna run almost identical.

I tell you now, you wont see a game on the next gen xbox (for the whole gen) that looks better that tlou2 will look on ps5 (at launch) and that isn't even native to ps5.
Wait til naughty dog build from the ground up for ps5.
You really think xbox is gonna out perform. It's not all what's in the box. It takes talent to squeeze it all.

LOGICWINS1861d ago

Watching the Geoff Keighly interview now. One of the devs implied that the PS5 was the "best hardware" available and that it would be scaled DOWN for other platforms. 😳

alb18991861d ago

Yea maybe that is why DF just said that Unreal Engine compromise resolution to play it on ps5. The game was running 1440p.

starchild1861d ago

If you think it's going to be scaled down for PC you need to think again. And between PS5 and Series X the latter has more performance in the traditional CPU and GPU metrics while the PS5 has a faster SSD and related bandwidth, so most likely you could perhaps call that fairly even, but certainly won't be the case of downscaling it.

It is pretty exciting tech, but it's 3rd party and will be powering numerous games for all major platforms.

Sprucegoose771861d ago

PS5 is by no means weak especially for a console. That said the Xbox SX is a little more powerful than the PS5 but it's very minimal. In real world performance you will see little difference.

MrVux0001861d ago

My only concern for PS5, is whether or not we will get a choice between 1080p and 60FPS or 4K and 30FPS.

Considering the main selling point of next gen is loading times and general performance, i really hope developers prioritize performance.

I don't need to worry about first party games, as they rarely dissapoint.

Inside the ‘Dragon Age’ Debacle That Gutted EA’s BioWare Studio

The latest game in BioWare’s fantasy role-playing series went through ten years of development turmoil

In early November, on the eve of the crucial holiday shopping season, staffers at the video-game studio BioWare were feeling optimistic. After an excruciating development cycle, they had finally released their latest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and the early reception was largely positive. The role-playing game was topping sales charts on Steam, and solid, if not spectacular, reviews were rolling in.

HyperMoused5d ago

Its easy they called the die hard fans people in their nerd caves who will buy anything and then went woke to reach modern audiences....insulting the nerds in their caves along the way showing utter contempt for their fan base. very hapy it failed and any company who insults their fan base and treat their customers with contempt and insults, in future, i also hope fail.

neutralgamer19924d ago

It’s disappointing but not surprising to see what's happening with Dragon Age: The Veilguard and the broader situation at BioWare. The layoffs are tragic — no one wants to see talented developers lose their jobs. But when studios repeatedly create games that alienate their own fanbase, outcomes like this become unfortunately predictable.

There’s a pattern we’re seeing far too often: beloved franchises are revived, only to be reshaped into something almost unrecognizable. Changes are made that no one asked for, often at the expense of what originally made these games special. Then, when long-time fans express concern or lose interest, they’re told, “This game might not be for you.” But when those same fans heed that advice and don’t buy the game, suddenly they're labeled as toxic, sexist, bigoted, or worse.

Let’s be clear: the overwhelming majority of gamers have no issue with diversity, LGBTQ+ representation, or strong female leads. In fact, some of the most iconic characters in gaming — like Aloy, Ellie, or FemShep — are proof that inclusivity and excellent storytelling can and do go hand in hand. The issue arises when diversity feels performative, forced, or disconnected from the narrative — when characters or themes are inserted not to serve the story, but to satisfy a corporate DEI checklist. Audiences can tell the difference.

When studios chase approval from a vocal minority that often doesn’t even buy games — while simultaneously dismissing loyal fans who actually do — they risk not just the success of individual titles, but the health of their entire studio. Telling your core customers “don’t buy it if you don’t like it” is not a viable business strategy. Because guess what? Many of us won’t. And when the game fails commercially, blaming those very fans for not supporting it is both unfair and self-defeating.

Gamers aren’t asking for less diversity or less progress. We’re asking for better writing, thoughtful character development, and a respect for the franchises we’ve supported for decades. When you give people great games that speak to them — whether they’re old fans or new players — they will show up. But if you keep making games for people who don’t play them, don’t be surprised when those who do stop showing up

Armaggedon4d ago

I thought the writing and character development were fine. Sometimes things just dont resonate with people.
