Xbox lead Phil Spencer says the industry will start to see the impacts of coronavirus in early 2021

From Business Insider: "But by March 2021, the industry could start to see the broader effects of the coronavirus. Games planned to launch next year and beyond are most likely to face issues with development that could lead to delays or cancellations.

"Through the summer, early fall? I feel pretty good about those games," Microsoft's Xbox leader Phil Spencer told Business Insider. "Games that were targeting a year from now or beyond? There'll be some impact, but they'll be able to react."

As far as motion capture goes, why can’t they test people before entering the stage?

monkey6021442d ago

I'm sure motion capture could take weeks if not months of work. Do you test actors every day? Just because they were all clear on a tuesday doesn't mean they cant get it by friday.

If an actor gets the virus does it just halt all production then?

gamer78041442d ago

That’s just not possible, it takes sometimes months to get mocap done and it’s still hard to get reliable testing done. Also once the second wave hits this fall winter it’s going to be worse

Noskypeno1442d ago

I cant wait for that second wave of corona to kill me with a heart attack, from me eating too many burgers, beer, and cigarettes and refusing to exercise.

silenthillstrangler1442d ago (Edited 1442d ago )

They could be infected and a symptomatic or contract it during the time it takes to finish the job.

rainslacker1442d ago (Edited 1442d ago )

Logistics really. There is some rapid testing available, but it's not ubiquitous. Plus, what do you do if someone is sick? Actors work together, and the tech people are usually required, and there isn't typically a lot of redundancy if someone is sick. Plus, if someone is sick, they may not test positive if they're asymptomatic, and could still spread the virus.

OTOH, outside the actors, the tech people don't really have to all be super close to one another, and could practice safe working practices. but, then when it comes to the actors again, many do have to travel, often by plane....sometimes internationally. They have to be housed as well.

Then there's the follow up work which is done after principal capture. Usually voice acting and maybe scene re-do's. Some of that can be done without other actors around. Realistically, it's not impossible to do motion capture with the actors being nowhere near each other. Their relative position can be moved post shoot...although it could be less natural. This is the way it used to be done. Voice actors rarely are ever working in the same room together.

@Some below

It doesn't generally take months to do mocap work. 2-4 weeks is the general production time. Even most big budget movies don't take months to shoot. If they go on months, they're typically split up into different several week sections. Actual production is longer due to all the other stuff that is done during production.

I can see where mo-cap would be severely impacted by this. That follows for movies and TV as well where performances require personal interaction and close proximity with others. The effects of this for the entire entertainment industry could be felt for some time. lol....could we have a record number of CGI movies in 2021?

I'm also curious if games in the future could incorporate a pandemic into games too.

I remember after Katrina how Infamous had a section of the game take place in a city that was destroyed by a dam.

So could we see a game in several years or so a game that instead of a Zombie outbreak, there is a more natural pandemic? I think the possibilities are there for an interesting game, but then you have to also think does it hit too close to home, so that game developers decide to not make a game like that.

WGAF1442d ago

U probably will see a home simulation soon :)

silenthillstrangler1442d ago (Edited 1442d ago )

Their have already been a tonne of games based on a devastating pandemic, the division 2 being one of the top of my head.

"the capital group of PCF Group S.A."

If you're getting funding from a group that needs two different ways of Acronyming itself, things will not go the way you want them to.

If it was more online-only crap then good riddance.

Escape from Tarkov Unheard Edition Reneges on Promised Content Behind $250 Price Tag

The new Escape from Tarkov Unheard Edition has the community in an outrage after promising exclusive access to the new PvE mode for $250 USD.

Christopher11h ago

$250? Do they not know all the other games that already exist or will be made in the future that can do similar?

SimpleDad3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

This is for the hardcore people that have 2500 h in the game. They basically play that one game the whole year.
Oh and those same people are mad as hell at this... what a way to reward fans of your game and annihilate newcomers.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle2h ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Sonic18813m ago

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

Cacabunga2h ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff21831h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga23m ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos4h ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

XBManiac3h ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple1013h ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic1h ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.
