Xbox boss Phil Spencer reckons that the change between current and next-gen games could be as dramatic as the jump from 2D to 3D.
Title updated to more closely reflect what Phil Spencer is getting across. - coolbeans
Full tweet: "RT on console will be great. I'm very focused on the work we are doing around Dynamic Latency Input (DLI). In my view the feel of games this upcoming generation will change as dramatically as any since 2D to 3D given CPU upgrade, DLI, memory bandwidth and SSD."
The title and the actual quote are... drastically different. That said, we should keep all these advertised expectations at bay.
Welcome to the world of sensationalism.
Phil Spencer is becoming that guy that talks too many BS. I just wish they let him reach into their goldbank and make some good high quality games.
"The title and the actual quote are... drastically different." Like I said in another topic: every single tweet Phil writes to his followers and Xbox fans is like a worldwide press conference. The title should be changed.
"as dramaticlly as any *since" vs "as dramatic as" are two very different things, but I'll give the author the benefit of the doubt, that statement could be easily misinterpreted or reported incorrectly.
Change between 2d and 3d but without exclusives and with halo and gears Forza 🤣 Oh and AA batteries
I feel like the resolution upgrades have provided big and obvious changes in 480 to 720 to 1080 to 1440. Beyond that it's a lot harder to tell. So frame rate would be an easy use of the power but that's not revolutionary. Certainly the power will open up capabilities to add more depth and realism into scenes, but I think that will take a lot more work from game developers and artists. Lots of games will take the easy route and just continue to bump the frames and res in the next few years imo
It will be interesting to see if some studios continue to prioritize 30FPS for there AAA experiences, given now that we have more power and ways to produce steady 60FPS games. I feel like AAA games need to hit 60FPS going forward.
I'm not quite sure what he's trying to say even with the full tweet. 2D to 3D changed entirely how we see games. Does he mean this will change another sense in this regard, perhaps how we feel/react to them?
Phil meant that games will feel faster, more responsive than ever. His example, 2D to 3D, was inappropriate and hyperbolic because the only advance that could possibly exceed that jump would be achieving true photorealistic visuals. I don't blame him, PR is literally his job, after all.
@UltraNova "His example, 2D to 3D, was inappropriate and hyperbolic because the only advance that could possibly exceed that jump would be achieving true photorealistic visuals." Lol. Not far. Not far at all. https://www.dsogaming.com/w... https://www.dsogaming.com/w... https://www.dsogaming.com/w... https://thesquad.com.br/wp-... https://preview.redd.it/2al... https://pbs.twimg.com/media... https://pbs.twimg.com/media...
@obscure While FS is looking sharp, really sharp, it's nowhere near photorealistic. Even the best movie CGI isn't even close to photorealism and they use supercomputers to generate those scenes. Don't get carried away.
No he doesn't. He says as drastic as any SINCE 2d to 3d.
You're right. I just took the title from VG247 but it seems they missed that.
No worry. Hardly your fault.
then shouldn't you take it down or edit the title?
@ jambola: unfortunately you can't after it's been approved.
Nothing will ever be as drastic as PS1 -> PS2 and PS2 -> PS3...
Huh? Atari 2600 to NES to SNES/Genesis was humongous. Look at the first game, Combat, on Atari 2600 which was out in 1977. Then look at Super Mario World on SNES which was out in 1991. That's a big difference in only a span of 14 years. Pretty incredible
@denawayne I mean nothing will be as drastic going forward... Ofc those prev gen were transformative... But look at FF7 vs FFX vs FFXIII vs FFXV... We're already at the peak... You can plot an S curve outta these gens... PS1 and PS2 era had the steepest climb... Nothing will ever compare again... Going forward, it's mostly gonna be framerates and pixel counts...
No. Unless a company not really known for creativity or originality has discovered some uber radical new method of game design, we'll be lucky to get the constant 60 fps promised at the start of last/current gen.
@Godmars290 So a guy who works close to multiple studios and has deep knowledge on next gen Xbox hardware is talking out of his a$$ while you hold the keys of truth. Wow "we'll be lucky to get the constant 60 fps promised at the start of last/current gen." By "we" you mean who? Bare in mind he´s taking specifically about the Xbox Series X and since you don´t game on Xbox, FYI, we been getting Xbox One´s first party games with locked 60fps since day one. Feel free and look up for DF videos in case you want further and additional information.
"So a guy who works close to multiple studios and has deep knowledge on next gen Xbox hardware is talking out of his a$$" When said "guy" has a track record for over hyping products only to under deliver on said hype? Yeah, until he delivers he's only talking out of his @$$. And I am not "speaking truth", I'm pointing out evidence derived from past history. The only way to refute it is new evidence, not empty challenges from the peanut gallery. And yeah, before you say, I'm in the peanut gallery too.
@Godmars290 "When said "guy" has a track record for over hyping products only to under deliver on said hype? Yeah, until he delivers he's only talking out of his @$$." Since Phil Spencer got promoted he has been delivering nothing but great news and never seen before in the game industry, investments in first party studios, games and worldwide top talented developers. If all of this will payoff I don´t know, but I´m not going to pretend that Xbox hasn´t improved under his leadership or create fictions on how he´ll have those new games cancelled just for kicks. "Yeah, until he delivers he's only talking out of his @$$." According to your logic, same goes to competition and it´s next gen Gran Turismo at Native 4K/240fps. We shall see soon enough.
"According to your logic, same goes to competition" YES! YES IT DOES!!! Thank you for showing ability to recognize that something other than Xbox exists! "We shall see soon enough." Which, aside from MS digging themselves a hole with hype, is all I've been saying where you've only insisted Xbox has made up for their past - when nothing of real substance has been shown. "never seen before in the game industry" Really...? *sigh*
'he has been delivering nothing but great news'. !!
Spenser has been talking out his ass for the past 7 years lol. This is no different.
Yeah and they showed minecraft and gears 5 as their first nexgen games.. hypin it up again
That is not true. They just showed how Ray Tracing will perform even in existing games and took Gears and Minecraft as example.
Did they show raytracing in gears 5?
https://youtu.be/qcY4nRHapm... There you got Sir.
I remember Phil Spencer getting up on stage at the Videogame Awards and announcing Series X and showing Hellblade 2 for the first time.
How do you know someone doesn't understand Ray tracing? They make fun of the Minecraft demo without realizing that an RTX 2080 runs that demo at 30 fps max.
Bro still.. they showed the same raytraced Minecraft demo with series X? Where the hell is it on the x? And no matter how impressive taytracing is on Minecraft its still minecraft made from 2 polygons lol.. if ur talking such big things like difference between 2d and 3d then show us something to back that up or just Stfu
Lol...that is hilarious.
The biggest jump since 2D to 3D is Virtual Reality like PSVR.
That's true, 3D games were revolutionary as the VR and 3D games was garbage at the start as the VR is now. You are right Sir!
PSVR has tons of awesome VR games like WipEout Omega VR, Resident Evil 7 VR, Astro Bot VR, Sairento VR, Tetris Effect VR, In Death VR, Telefrag VR, RIGS VR, Skyrim VR, Driveclub VR, No Man's Sky VR, Megaton Rainfall VR, The Persistence VR etc. Your attempts to downplay VR games are as see-thru and obvious as the lack of VR games on Xbox consoles.
Totally agree. While not currently for everyone, VR has been the only revolution we've had in gaming for a long while.
You are correct. VR and maybe the OR are the biggest jump, though they are still in the infant phase and will take time till they become the norm.
Another "Phil Spencer Says" article! Will next-gen games cure cancer and fellate us too, Philbox?
wonder how did u end up here in this article comments "phil spencer didn't say" for u to read it :}
Thanks to Phil Spencer disabled gamers are able to play triple A games for the FIRST time ever regardless of their platform. He's done more for gaming this gen then Sony OR Nintendo.
He did alot.. besides making good games
That’s indeed something beautiful and amazing
"will be as drastic as [ANY SINCE] 2D to 3D" How can you f*** up copy and paste....
3d games were crap when they first came out lol 😂. Anyone remember that robocop game on pc? Lol 😂
Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time were pretty good. Not sure what we are calling the beginning of 3d games though, like what date.
You are far in the future. 3D games come far before. Way back. The robocop game he mentions was released like 5 year before Mario 64. And wasn’t even one of the first 3D games.
Wasn't Doom on PC the first 3D game?
I think he refers to the more mainstream 3D. Indeed first 3D games were crappy as fuck. I remember playing Robocop 3. Such difficult times yet I had so much fun. So much wonder.
I'm just happy someone else remembered that robocop game 😂. Cheers bud 👍 I just remember having a blast on 2d games, then they started talking 3d and they were sh#t!! (to start off with) 😂. Don't think it was until doom, quake and Duke nuken I got excited 😃
That already happened on PS4 with PSVR.
Do you know PlayStation 4 did not invent VR, right?
Ha! They did invent PSVR thought.
Why does this guy love talking so much bullshit?
Says the guy who only reads headlines
Whose fault is that really though. The guy reading, or the guy bullshitting.
He's out there selling his product. It's what salespeople do
What’s your point? Next gen will suck?
He is right, people till don't understand the jump in performance next gen will bring, but that is only the hardware side, put it together with things like VRS, Direct ML, texture decompression, and stuff we don't know yet and it's a new era for gaming. MS is really betting big with the Series X, and on the PS side same thing, they will have a weaker console but we all know what Sony can do with their hardware. People stop hating on the brand you don't like and enjoy what they are doing for gaming. Good days ahead, this will also massively lower the gap to PC gaming.
If they're really betting on the XSX, then why are they maintaining legacy support for the first year or two which will mean they aren't going to be releasing anything that is designed around this "drastic" change he's talking about? Most of the drastic changes that next gen will bring require not compromising to the lowest common denominator. If Phil is just talking about prettier graphics, then...well, is that really that drastic of a change worth hyping up to this level....because that's about all MS can promise for the first year or two.
Most of the games coming next year will be cross generation. MS just said that they're supporting One and One X for good PR for those who don't know that it's always been that way. Major publishers aren't going to just ditch over 130M players between PS4 and One. I'm guessing that Halo and Forza (possibly Fable) are the only big games that are going to be cross gen, the rest will probably be smaller side projects. Hellblade 2 was announced for Series X with no mention of Xbox One. The Initiative game is probably Series X because we haven't even seen any game play at this point and they keep hiring people so who knows how far along development is. Obsidian just released Outer Worlds not that long ago, their next game (other than Grounded) is probably a year or two off, minimum. They were just hiring for their next big AAA game last year https://www.pcgamer.com/obs... InXile is going to release Wasteland 3, they may have started on their next project, but again, it probably won't be finished for at least a couple years. Gears 5 isn't that old and Gears Tactics was released today, so the next Coalition project is probably years off.... We might see another game from Undead Labs as cross gen, it's been a while since State of Decay 2 and they released some more content for that a couple months ago. Double Fine is working on Psychonauts 2, so after that their next project is probably years off.. As I said, the whole "we're supporting this gen for another year or two" is just a PR move. Looking at what's coming and what the devs just released gives you an idea that the next games from these developers are a ways off. There's really not going to be any AAA games held back, Halo was announced years ago so they have to put it on One.
@rainslacker "Most of the drastic changes that next gen will bring require not compromising to the lowest common denominator." In no moment he said launch games. Besides, how exactly do you know Sony´s position regarding legacy support other than anyone else out there? By a tweet from Jason Schreier?
@element I get that. But the OP stated they were going all in, or betting at least. That just isnt the case. They're releasing cross gen games, which means they're releasing them while holding onto this gen. There is nothing wrong with that, just it's not going all in. The reason they're doing it is to keep their game pass subs going during the transition. There will probably be more money in that for them in the short term. It may or may not have an effect on console sales, only time will tell. @Obscure I cant tell what Sony will do, which is why I didnt mention them, and instead only discussed MS, and more general aspects about next gen hardware which both companies are providing.
@rainslacker "I cant tell what Sony will do" Yeah, as i thought.
Well...guess you proved me wrong by talking about something that had nothing to do with my comment then. Good job with the deflection. I'll be sure to reward you with some cookies and milk.
