Remakes Are for New Ideas and Rethinking Classics, Not Retreading Old Ground

Let creators see these old games through a new lens.

Christopher1885d ago

Remakes are for whatever the developers want. And sometimes retreading old ground is absolutely what we need to remember where we strayed from the path of what makes a good game.

UnSelf1884d ago

This shouldn’t include reusing outdated game mechanics just to placate

Gaming1011884d ago

Exactly. Tank controls in Resident Evil, desperately needed an update and the remakes were all the better for it.
Red Faction Guerilla desperately needed a game design update. It freezes more than it should, and there's no option to skip long boring driving sections at the start of a mission should you fail. Even Grand Theft Auto figured that game design trope out on the PS2 days.
Not really a remake but still on point, Doom Eternal is old school mixed with new school game design, they took a lot of the ideas of early Doom and just modernized them, made them fit together to make something cohesive, with platforming and no regenerating health; just run and gun old school gameplay with no cover mechanics or even ducking. It was brilliant, and the different design we aren't used to has created a massive learning curve for a lot people complaining it's too hard. It will be jarring going back to a cover shooter like Call of Duty.

People really love the symantics of what is generally vaguely defined terms.

thejigisup1884d ago

People also have the decision not to buy the game if its not what they are into. The original game is still amazing. The amount of people complaining post launch of FfviiR after all the reviews and gameplay videos is astounding.

Christopher1884d ago

I have no opinion on FFVIIR. I do have an opinion on people trying to define things for others based solely on their own opinion of what it entails.

Rethinking it in the right way without messing with the original but FF7 is going in the wrong direction. Resident Evil remake is a perfect example of not messing with the original while at the same time expanding on story, gameplay, and design.
FF7 remake had many moments that paid tribute to the original expanded on it to give it context and make it more appealing to the modern audience.
Story-
The introduction of the whispers was pure nonsense and shows the influence of Tetsuya Nomura. They might end up making FF7 remake story into a mess with what they pulled off here. I'm pretty sure Tetsuya Nomura and the writers wanted something new for the fans that have already played the original but I don't think they hit the spot with the new twist.
But there are moments that are great such as Hojo getting more screen time. The original he was barely there and was being portrayed as the bigger villain which didn't work.

Battle system-
Turn-based combat was fine in the original. I don't understand why they needed to make a new battle system for this game. They could have easily integrated a classic mode(not in relation to what they call classic in the game) where the combat is balanced and can be turned base. It is very clear that the new battle system was made for new players, not for classic players.

The new battle system works fine but it can get jarring at times. The camera is a main cause for concern as it does whatever it pleases. The designers have prioritized the spectacle of combat rather than making combat balanced and fair. This is especially bad during boss fights and when you get close to them, the camera doesn't pan out to give the player a proper view of what they're doing. This will be a cause for concern if they don't fix it because there are towering fights in the future which needs to be done justice.

There are many questions for the future of the FF7
-Will my maxed out materia, level and gear be transferred in the next game
-Will each section of the next game be treated to the same level of attention and expansion.

I'm going to predict and say that FF7 is all hands on deck at Square Enix. As in we are not going to get a FFXVI until FF remake is over which Im gonna predict is towards the end of next gen.

I agree with you on resident evil 2. That's a great way to revitalize the story and gameplay. I just think FF7R was far more ambitious and went the extra mile in developing who these characters are, and why their struggle was important. It didn't feel perfect to me in every way, but overall I would say it is by far the best remake yet (pt 1 that is) because of how well the story was handled. As for gameplay, the materia system is better than ever and STILL felt FF7ish to me in its strategies. It's an amazingly balanced and deep reimagining and came across as revolutionary.

thejigisup1884d ago

How much of the original game had ideas that never made it into the launch of the original due to hardware and software as re limitations? I wonder if the remake was a copy of the original with just upgraded visuals if people would complain.

Kavorklestein1884d ago (Edited 1884d ago )

To be fair, FF7 (original) although great and varied and special in all of our hearts, had far too much repetition in motives among the Main cast. It said things like: "We've gotta save the planet!" And Barrett saying "*!$%×#" or "Dammit" far too often. It also took FOREVER to get to the point. At least the remake expands on the lives of the people in the world, and does so with beautiful EVERYTHING making us Ooh and Ahh. And the music, cannot be topped. We went from midi to Fully orchestrated and REAL soundtracks. Tell me how that soundtrack could possibly get better? A dubstep re-mix in the year 2035 on Playstation 9? Nope.

The game makes a great case for what the Jist of the story WAS about in 1997 without the Convoluted and time wasting tasks of getting Gold Chocobos and Leveling up each character to 9999/9999 To actually feel powerful. With sidequests that are hidden and have no connotation or way of tracking if you have completed them. Or even when it comes to the insane amounts of backtracking for that matter.
The remake FOCUSES on the world and takes you on a journey. 1997 version takes 3 weeks to tell you how to partially figure something out about Cloud. And takes even longer to actually have that "Aha! I Love this game!" Moment. The remake is fantastic from the start.

@Thejig

No matter which way Square went with this remake, they would have gotten criticism. The franchise is too well known, too mainstream, and has tons of nostalgia on it for it to please everyone. Couple that with new players and the rather extensive innovation that has happened with gaming since it's release, there was no way that this game could release without someone being unhappy. Even when Square released the PC port onto current gen, people complained that they wanted a remake. Then they got a remake, and they complained. Not everyone, but enough that I think maybe after all these years, they should have just moved on if they were that upset about it. No one is forcing them to play the game, but Square is going to make the game they want to make, and people can play it if they want.

Gonna disagree with that. That's what a reboot or reimagining is for. The concept of a remake is to tell this same story with these same characters through a new lens, not to completely change it, be on the nose about changing it, or push forward with something that's very, very different from what came before. That's not to say they can't make some changes, the RE2 and 3 remakes did that, but they still retained the core of what the original games were.

This just feels more like giving people a license to take a classic game with a story and characters people love and just letting them do whatever they currently feel like doing with it, cashing in on nostalgia whilst not giving people what they came for.

Feels a bit off to me, being honest.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_9236d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil35d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

I prefer play the original more than this

RE3 need another remake

DivineHand12587d ago

Why not port RE4 remake to meta quest 3?

Profchaos87d ago

Because the headset isn't capable of running it simply put it's not powerful enough.

Look at metro awakening on quest 3 that's pushing it to its extreme and it's quite far behind PC and PS for graphical capabilities.

Profchaos87d ago

Wow I thought they would abandon this as the sales for village and 4 were abysmal

JEECE87d ago

For whatever reason and despite all evidence to the contrary, their are some companies bent on convincing themselves and others that people want to play premium games on Apple devices.

VersusDMC87d ago

It's assumed apple is paying for the ports. Apple probably paid a lump sum for all the RE games so capcom is just finishing up the contract.

Or maybe Capcom sees this as port practice for the switch 2 or these ports are what the switch 2 versions will be?
