Microsoft to offer free consumer security suite

Microsoft on Tuesday said it is changing its strategy for offering PC antivirus software, with plans to discontinue its subscription-based consumer security suite and instead offer individuals free software to protect their PCs.

Code-named Morro, the new offering will be available in the second half of 2009 and will protect against viruses, spyware, rootkits, and Trojans, the company said in a statement.

I like. This will lead to less BSoD's in the future.

Yes the new security measure will be DCS. We call this phenomenon, "Doesn't Catch $hit".

i looked a while back, and it seemed the LOC is one of the worst antiviruses, catches only 89% of the viruses, but still it's better than nothing.. for those that just run it without an antivirus that is, MS should make this a critical update for xp, vista and win7.. and make it work side by side with other antiviruses.. they'd have many new customers with it..

Sucks for me i got their subscription to one care. I got a key from a friend.

What sucks is recovering my pc today after being offline for a few days due to a couple trojans and some malware. Using free Avira to remove virus even though I have a subscription to Norton 360 which should cover all my pc's... costs me around $70 a year yet its a pain and not worth the money IMO. My lady likes it on her pc so I still pay for it though.

disagree all you want lol. I still stay warm at night. She pyroclastic.

Norton is terrible.

If you're going to use anti-virus, use NOD32.

Personally, I don't use an AV as I'm careful about what I download and the sites I visit.

Avira works well enough and its totaly free for the basic service. Most of the time im carefull too but there are times when I got to try some of those games/mods made out of country that retain more graphic content.

Plastic does not count ....WTF.

uie4rhig3833d ago

have you been stalking him or w/e? lol

on the AV topic.. Kaspersky is one of the best.. easy to use.. doesn't kill resources like Norton does, and last time i check it was THE best antivirus (killing 98% of the viruses if i remember it right)

Good one Microsoft! This would make me want to buy a PC.

likeaboss3023834d ago

I wonder what that means for Norton, AVG, etc. with pay products? You have to make money somehow.

cherrypie3834d ago

Thats the first thing I thought.

McAfee isnt diversified like Symantec.

And, MFE seems to be doing fine.

Perhaps the financial dudes on Wallstreet didnt get this geek news, this is going to devestate the Virus Apps software... BIG TIME.

AVG, Norton, McCafee are all doomed.

uie4rhig3833d ago

thats wot i thought!! Antiviruses are no longer in this society.. i do hope that they don't go away, but they try to make it work side by side.. coz LOC isn't that a good anti virus!! compared to other antiviruses
