Half-Life: Alyx Review - IGN

This is what can happen when a world-class developer goes all-in on the new frontier of technology.

mockzer01875d ago

Definitely want to check this one out!

ilikestuff1875d ago

Wonder if they’ll do a port to the next gen for us console owners.

--bienio--1875d ago

Come on? I can understand Xbox players but PlayStation players crying for Pc game? Unbelievable

-Foxtrot1875d ago

They should, why give a middle finger to so many fans who have waited for a single drop of Half Life info ever since the ending of Half Life 2 Episode 2. I could have forgiven it not being Half Life 3 but this is another level of bullshit entirely.

It could get the most perfect scores but without a non VR version I'll never be able to play

No way I'm paying for VR and a beefy PC...especially with the way the world is today, money has become so vital now our place has shut with no income. God, I hope I can afford next gen, maybe it will blow over by November who knows.

xTonyMontana1875d ago

@bienio it's VR only, PS owners are asking for it because of PSVR

crazyCoconuts1875d ago

I'd bet yes. Valve is as aware that typical console gamers aren't going to buy a PC for VR just as much as Sony is aware that typical PC gamers aren't going to buy a console for VR. They're already supporting multiple headsets, so they're not being super territorial on this one..

Fist4achin1875d ago (Edited 1875d ago )

Sucks that they released previous games on all consoles with the exception of Nintendo and now they don't?!

outsider16241875d ago

@bienio
Why not? Pc players were petitioning for bloodborne back then.

Profchaos1875d ago

I hope so I'm a psvr owner and I intend to buy a ps5 for its psvr compatibility.
Hopefully the tracking issues can be fixed with additional camera ports and we can get some finger tracking and analogue sticks on the future move controller.

VR may not overtake traditional gaming for quite some time if ever it just isn't as relaxing but it definitely does have a place in the future landscape with games like half life alyx cementing it.

rainslacker1875d ago

Outside of bickering over who has the best VR, PC and console VR gamers have been fairly cordial to one another. The recognize the technology can grow if they support one another, instead of making it into a platform war where one format rules them all. Eventually, we may have it where there are only one or two players, but that time shouldn't be now.

Neonridr1875d ago

Anything is possible, but they might wait for a successor to the PSVR first.

AKS1874d ago

Valve's responses when asked about PSVR convinced me it is very likely going to happen on PS5.
http://www.pushsquare.com/n...

"Designer Greg Coomer reconfirms that the "initial" release of Half-Life: Alyx will be "available for SteamVR only". It definitely sounds like Valve is aware of the desire to see the game come to PSVR, however: "We believe Sony’s VR platform has been a huge success for the medium, and we assume that lots of Sony customers would love to experience this new chapter of Half-Life.""

Is that the response you'd expect if Valve had no interest or plans to bring it to PSVR? I would not be surprised to see a representative at Valve appear at a Sony event later this year introducing it on PS5/ PSVR. Or they could be waiting on PSVR2, which I think would have to be at minimum 6 months to a year after the PS5 launch, maybe more. Whenever that might be, I don't see any problems selling a Half-Life game to the PSVR crowd, an actual exclusive to VR that is a friggin' HALF-LIFE game rather than a port of a decent game converted to VR.

ilikestuff1874d ago

Bienio

Don’t know if I’m “crying” For a port. I’d like one though

Valve should make more games they are excellent at it I don't know why they have walked away from AAA development

MrVux0001875d ago

Playing it safe with Steam income, along with side-income from microtransactions TF2, CS:GO and DOTA 2. I can't really blame them.

Also i will pretend Artifact never happened.

ElementX1875d ago (Edited 1875d ago )

They make so much money from Steam/MTs that they could produce 100 AAA games, have them flop, and still come out ahead in cash. Gabe Newell is worth $3.5 billion, money isn't the reason.

1875d ago
Noskypeno1875d ago

But at some point I'm sure they get bored. Sure a little break is nice but at some point they might figure out what they were good at. It's possible to have billions and still feel bored because you lost your purpose.

darthv721875d ago (Edited 1875d ago )

I've stated that if there was one game that could bring me back to the world of PC gaming... it would be HL3. This looks very promising and I am tempted but I must refrain for the time being. I know I will be jealous of those who have the rigs to run this. Enjoy it for those of us who don't. Hopefully this encourages Valve to finally develop that long awaited Freeman finale.

sprinterboy1875d ago

Well said buddy, massive hl fan myself but I walked away from pc gaming about 10years ago but dam I've ant in my pants for this but sadly the £1000 it costs would eat into my more important hdmi 2.1 micro led 4k TV I'll purchase this year.

RosweeSon1875d ago

Too many people just buy COD and fifa each year. I’m sure if one of their games had half the success those average ones do yearly they would but sadly they don’t.

BradsGamingPlace1875d ago (Edited 1875d ago )

They've made sure to stop projects before they get ahead of themselves as seen with Half Life 2: Episode 3 and Left 4 Dead 3. And, with maintaining Steam they've been able to stay afloat without the need of publishing many new titles.

It's great to see that between Index, Vive, and Alyx they've been able to push towards a VR future, even if that compromised standard PC and console releases since CS:GO was the last big release before VR and Artifact.

Hopefully this could mean for more VR titles in the future from Valve, or more games in general. Hell, the Artifact re-work should be right around the corner, and that has the potential of being a killer comeback.

steven_seagull1874d ago

They have? I thought they just released one ?

Pricey1875d ago

This is great news for VR. Thank you valve for pushing the industry forward. Hopefully this is the first of many.

specialguest1875d ago

On a Gamespot video review it was mentioned that at the final hour there is a bold and monumental moment in the game where it solidifies the reason why it can only be done in VR. That's what I like to hear, Valve going beyond just a FPS in VR perspective. Sounds like they are implementing a new gameplay experience

starchild1875d ago

Yeah, I simply can't wait to play it.

Atticus_finch1875d ago

Awesome. Now I wonder if this will make it to Psvr. If so, it will most likely be on Ps5.

TommyVercetti881875d ago

That's one of the big reasons to buy a PS5 and the upcoming VR mode in GTA VI exclusive on PS5.

1874d ago
TommyVercetti881874d ago (Edited 1874d ago )

@shaggy2303 Yeah i forgot the pc version because it will launch later then the consoles. And there will be a VR camera mode in GTA VI for the PS5. Sony is going even bigger with VR for the PS5 so implementing VR in GTA VI and make it exclusive for the PS5 when GTA VI launches is a very smart move.

generic-user-name1875d ago

Hopefully Sony give us new motion controllers before then.

Atticus_finch1875d ago (Edited 1875d ago )

I have to imagine Psvr 2 will release soon after the Ps5 with new controllers.

CaptainCook1875d ago

PlayStation users begging for VR ports lol

Atticus_finch1875d ago

Point me to where I was begging.
Green boys mad that Xbox is continuously far behind Sony in all the areas that matter.

I will be playing this later when I get home and I cant wait. My favorite vr game is asgards wrath and I'll see if this can dethrone it. Game looks amazing and after watching acg review I'm hyped.

crazyCoconuts1875d ago

I jumped from PSVR to RiftS a few months ago and working through my backlog of PC VR only titles. Haven't gotten to asgard's yet (working through fallout4vr) but heard it's awesome

cloganart1874d ago

Easily currently the best VR experience so far. It oozes quality.

After all of the PS Studio games that released on Steam, I’m baffled Sony hasn’t gotten Alyx onto the PSVR2.

DefenderOfDoom277d ago

I was thinking the same thing . No Half Life video game is available on PS4 and PS5 .

Eagerly waiting for the PSVR2/PC adapter to drop.

I’m still really, really unhappy about having to pay £40 for what would essentially be a slightly modified £5 adapter though!

Babadook7298d ago

Hoping it makes the journey to PSVR2 yet. Another mind blowing experience is RE8 in VR.

I hope so. Might give me a reason to dig out the PSVR2.

F0XH0UND922461d ago

Oh you must have beaten all the good VR games already?

Petebloodyonion462d ago

If Vertigo tries for the real AAA experience like Valve did then yeah
But if Vertigo tries for the light Call of the mountain experience then nope it will be another... light eperience

MrBaskerville462d ago

It looked very much like a proper metro game in vr. I'm mostly worried about its length. Hopefully atleast 6+ hours and not 2.

EvertonFC462d ago

Agreed hoping for some decent hours to be had, 6 plus sounds about right.
Love the series so wiping the gas mask clean, changing filters, checking watch and reloading weapon should be fantastic.
Also one for the headphones, going to be so atmospheric and not for the faint hearted.

MrBaskerville462d ago

@EvertonFC
Mega jank or short playtime is the only thing that could kill the potential in this one, as I see it. And I don't really believe that they would go with something super short.

I'm very optimistic, they really just need to combine Re4 Remake with Metro last Light and we're golden.

Neonridr461d ago

looking like a VR game and being an actual game and not some slice is completely different. We will know more in time though.

fr0sty462d ago

COTM was a launch title, so it being short and light on content is to be expected.

coolbeans462d ago

That's perfectly fine too, but I don't think that detracts from Peter's main point: there's a gap between COTM & what HL: Alyx accomplished as VR-only titles.

MrBaskerville462d ago

Short is ok, that't to be expected from a vr game. But there's short and there's demo sized.

DefenderOfDoom2462d ago

I would buy a PSVR2 just to play this game .

Leeroyw462d ago

Buy it for resident evil 4. It's amazing.

EvertonFC462d ago

So many great games, I've still got about 20 games on my wishlist to get through.
Wallets going to hurt this year with VR and traditional games.

generic-user-name462d ago

IMO RE8 and RE4 already clear Alyx. Yes Alyx is ground-up VR so it has more of a cohesive feel but the RE games are full AAA campaigns that are thrilling and using the iconic guns of RE4 in VR is something else.

Neonridr461d ago

Alyx will always be the benchmark personally because it was designed for VR. It didn't have VR shoe-horned into it. While Village and RE4 are fantastic, not being able to interact with your environment properly is what sets something like Alyx apart.

generic-user-name461d ago

Walking up to bottle and picking it up is cool and all but there's more to a game that that and I feel like it's something that is more of a novelty. There's much more to the combat in something like RE4 with multiple enemies rushing you (not dumbed down numbers for VR) and actually physically parrying attacks with a knife before single-hand pumping Leon's shotgun etc.

If you prefer Alyx, that's cool, it's an amazing game for sure and I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, but for me the RE VR games do more.

Neonridr461d ago

@generic - for me, VR is all about immersion. Resident Evil is amazing, but when you can't even interact with a single thing around you, it feels very limiting IMO.

Everyone is different of course. Arizona Sunshine and the Walking Dead has tons of enemies and frenetic paces, and they still allow you to interact with almost everything in sight. Even simple things like putting your hand against a wall and being able to place your hand on it. It's all about the little things for me in VR. Climbing ladders, vaulting over things, etc.
