We can stop the virus by staying home and isolating ourselves which is what we always did but now we become silent heroes.

Majin-vegeta1912d ago

Sadly too many idiots out there that dont listen case in point the spring breakers.Honestly if they wanna curve they most likely will have to enforce martial law for the time being.and have the National Guard&Army distribute items.

kneon1912d ago

These morons think that they aren't going to be affected even if they get it, not realising that almost half the patients in ICU are between 20-54. And many of those that end up in ICU will have permanent lung damage, if they survive.

Rebel_Scum1912d ago

Whilst they were out drinking, having promiscuous sex and spreading the virus, we were at home eating doritos, drinking mountain dew and mastering the blade.

Sono4211911d ago

The people overreacting are the morons, so far the US has 14,354 cases of confirmed coronavirus, and 217 confirmed deaths due to the virus, that's .0151% but hey let's shut down the entire country.... People are reacting so idiotically it's worse than the actual virus itself, I was at the store and there was a women there with a cart FULL of gallons of water and she REFUSED to come within 20 feet of anyone.... This mass hysteria is unwarranted. Anyone saying it is warranted is a moron, period, it's spread beyond the point of containing it thanks to china, at this point anything other than a full shutdown will stop it, which is COMPLETELY unnecessary as i've already pointed out, if you get it, just stay away from old people, pure and simple, if you work with old people... do what you're ALREADY supposed to do when you get sick.... CALL IN SICK. The thing is even if you're old and get it, you aren't guaranteed to die, COMPLETELY overblown.

beefynachos1911d ago

@Sono421 I see math is hard for you. 217 is 1.5% of 14,354. You forgot to move the decimal 2 places to the right.

FullDiveDerail1910d ago (Edited 1910d ago )

Sono421 It's going to keep going up and doubling in short periods of time. The only reason its not a huge jump already is because we took steps. Good luck though. You should keep going out in public as much as possible in groups..it will really work out for you. You obviously do not understand how this works..if they didn't take these steps it would be completely out of control. Go move to Italy and say its overblown.

My job requires me to go from house to house working on security systems. I'm in 10 homes a day on average. We want to be shut down as its only a matter of time before we get sick and start spreading the virus. Company is saying we are an essential industry on the same level as police and first responders.

The_Sage1912d ago

I feel for you. I work as a public works employee for a municipality. Our mayor seems to not give a damn about us, even though he has shut down city hall, and is able to stay home himself.

b00mFargl31912d ago

That's brutal. I'm sorry, but I hope for your safety.

FullDiveDerail1910d ago (Edited 1910d ago )

I have friends that work at large groceries stores and Walmart those are the real heroes....I think the government will end up defining what essential is.

Profchaos1911d ago (Edited 1911d ago )

Our grandparents were asked by their government to go to war. we're just being asked to sit on the couch and watch Netflix and game for two weeks.

ilikestuff1911d ago

Sony and Xbox company’s should give us all premium memberships for free to keep us inside, deep inside so we stay safe. That’d be boss. I’m horny

rainslacker1911d ago

I like getting paid though.

Doing nothing isn't really rising up and being a hero. It's just more common sense that when the situation demands such measures, we do those measures. I'm taking the option to work from home, mostly because I can with my work. Not everyone has that choice, and some people will be hurt by this more than I will, and I sympathize with them. Otherwise, i work during work hours, play during play hours. Minimize exposure and hope it blows over sooner rather than later. I don't need to rise up much more than that.

HannibalLecter1910d ago

@rainslacker
I have the option to work from home as well with my line of work.
We are definitely in the minority though.
I definitely feel and sympathize for everyone that will be affected by having to stay home but not able to earn like we will still be able to do.
I will be real busy during these times as I create training materials and curriculum for hospitals as well as other medical professions. So we are swamped right now.
We definitely have to all do our part though, like you said minimize exposure and hope everyone else does the same so it can blow over sooner than later.. We definitely need to all do our parts though, which I hope more people start to understand. It's the folks that feel they are immune or don't care if they spread it that concerns me the most.. But I feel where your coming from for sure..

rainslacker1910d ago

No doubt that not everyone has that advantage. I really feel for those that can't work at all during this time. They're going to be hit hard, and it may take a while for the economy to recover. My work isn't as busy now, despite going into a new console gen(I make tools for game engines and porting games). We were going full throttle, but working from home does disrupt the process due to testing being a lot harder to do now. More hoops to jump through. I would have continued to work at the office, but since most of the other staff wasn't, I was mostly just sitting there without much to do, so figured I could do that in the comfort of my own home. I still get done what I need to get done.

Hopefully this isn't an extended stay at home thing though. It is kind of boring after only almost a week now.

Sono4211911d ago

"help repopulate".............. 14,354 confirmed US cases.... 217 confirmed US deaths due to the corona.... that's .0151%..... sorry i'm sure you're looking for your chance to finally get some, but this won't be it, not even close.

AAWELLS091911d ago

Lol always someone who has to take things seriously. He's uh uhm joking?

Cobra9511911d ago

Look, I understand what you're saying. I think not enough thought has been given to the grave economic harm caused by the lockdowns. But that's not the same as saying it's OK to go party at a beach with thousands. That's simply irresponsible, and needs to be curtailed, by the National Guard if necessary.

1911d ago
rainslacker1911d ago

You do know that the numbers are going to go up right? While people are overreacting, the things going on now are to help keep the numbers from going up so high that it becomes more of a problem.

I mean, we can just look at these numbers and ignore that of those 14K cases, that that also means 14K hospital beds not available for people who need them, or more health care workers who are going to be pushed to the brink for what they'll end up working. But lets ignore that stuff, because it's a low percentage.

Is some of the stuff overblown? Yeah. I'd say people's reactions to buying toilet paper and cleaning out the grocery stores is probably too much.

doesn't mean that it's not something to worry about.

specialguest1912d ago

I love it. I'm profiting from this right now. Some of us know how to turn a downward market due to these types of events into big financial opportunities

Kabaneri1912d ago

At the expense of the global economy and possibly millions of lives.....

specialguest1912d ago

@kabaneri
It's not my fault for this world event, and my smart investment impacts no one. I just know how to see an opportunity

The_Sage1912d ago

Now is the time to invest. Though... I'm hearing that there may be runs on banks. That would really be horrible for everyone.

Sono4211911d ago (Edited 1911d ago )

@kabaneri millions of lives?! Okay seriously you nut jobs need to look at the actual statistics, you're blatant disregard for facts only causes people to overreact even more than they already are. There are 14,354 confirmed US cases, also 217 confirmed US deaths that's a measly .0151% of cases dead, okay let's do some math, in order to try to figure that out we would do 2 million divided by 217, the total number of deaths so far, then multiply that number by 14,354, which gives us 132,294,930.87557 to proof this we will multiply that by .0151 which gives us just barely shy of 2 million but this is because of rounding and the fact I don't enter every single decimal, that's how many people would have to get infected to even give us 2 million deaths ASSUMING the ratio would even stay the same, which I am willing to bet my life savings it would be MUCH lower as I am sure there are MANY cases unconfirmed, but if someone dies due to the corona it is all but GUARANTEED to be confirmed, so good luck with that 2 million deaths bud

kneon1911d ago (Edited 1911d ago )

@Sono421

You might want to work on your math skills before making such comments, you're off by a factor of 100. Currently the mortality rate is ~1.5% in the US.

If left unchecked it's expected that 60% or more of the US population could become infected. That 1.5% mortality rate would translate to over 3,000,000 dead. Except that the mortality rate would skyrocket under such conditions as the medical system just doesn't have the capacity to deal with anything on this scale.

And don't blame China if it's beyond containment, your government wasted weeks denying it was a problem and claiming it was already contained instead of actually doing anything useful until it was too late, meanwhile China got it under control. And the testing rate in the US is abysmal, though it is finally improving, but it's much too late.

Sono4211911d ago

@keon you are right I was off by two decimals, but you are very wrong about china handling this in a great way... you gotta be kidding, their denial of the virus even existing and THEN the attempted vcover up and silencing of those who knew about it was the reason it got everywhere else in the world, and you're going to try to pat them on the back? You literally can't be this dumb.... can you? Then you have the audacity to try put more blame on the US? You're some special kind of stupid.

Cobra9511911d ago

You're joking, right? Gotta be. DOGS AND CATS LIVING TOGETHER!! MASS HYSTERIA!!! If you're being serious, calm down. Even if we ALL get CV, over 98% of us will still be around afterward. And we're not all going to get it. So relax about "depopulation".

rainslacker1911d ago (Edited 1911d ago )

Forced vaccinations are bad for some reason? Something that will keep you from getting sick and potentially dying? Not seeing the problem here. I'm thankful I don't like in a world with small pox, and not getting certain nasty other diseases seems like something I wouldn't have to think of much when being asked to volunteer to get a vaccination.

Also....there's a vaccine? Maybe don't believe everything you read on the internet?

DEI was never the problem and it was an ignorant take to begin with.

DEI is why games like Kena Bridge of Spirits, South of Midnight, and Ghost of Tsushima exist.

DEI is why we have a huge resurgence in Japanese, Chineses, and Korean developers producing games like Stellar Blade, Black Myth, and why Nintendo & Sony exist.

DEI is why more and more games have HUGE accessibility options with both Sony and MS fully behind this.

DEI was never a bad thing, the entire purpose of DEI is representation of all people, genders, disabilities, etc…

The problem was people used DEI as a default derogatory term to describe what they believed was forced representation, which allowed colorist, racist, sexist, misogynist, homophobic, and xenophobic fools to run away with the negative DEI narrative.

Executives seem to often have an obsession with perpetual revenue growth. There is always a finite amount of consumers for a product regardless of growth. Additionally, over investment is another serious issue in gaming.

Killer2020UK2d ago

The fact that they also rarely have any real expertise in game development compounds things. They'll look at what's been successful elsewhere, lack the knowledge to properly understand why they have been successful and then force a team to 'reproduce' their badly interpreted idea of that success.

We see it so often with sequels to games that were successful too. The team are left well alone, they have a break through hit and all of sudden the money men descend on the IP and completely railroad the dev team's ideas. Usually winds up being 'make the same game but MORE'

LoveSpuds1d 18h ago

This is true throughout all of the corporate and public sector organisations to be honest. CEO's generally move amongst the corporate world without any need to have experience of a particular industry, they simply need to rely on their senior leadership credentials. A CEO of a retail giant will just as easily transition to a CEO role in the energy sector for example.

Not defending CEOs here to be clear, I think it's a huge part of the reason the western world is so fucked up. CEOs don't need to care about the sector they work in, in fact it's better if they don't care if they want to screw everyone to make profits.

GhostScholar2d ago

Companies don’t hire executives to break even. If the goal is breaking even then why start the company in the first place.

Soy2d ago

That's understood; it's getting record profits and expecting to always beat those record profits, and seeing anything less as a total failure. Then they lay people off and raise prices to reach those record profit levels again, just to sate shareholders. It's setting expectations way too high just to spike share prices, then inevitably falling short. It's feeling entitled to being more successful than everyone else. It's the CEOs doing all this to boost their own bonuses.

ABizzel11d 15h ago

Growth benefits the company’s profits and therefore the company’s stock if publicly traded, which pleases the shareholders making them more and more rich, which is why Growth is always at the forefront of the vast majority of any publicly traded company.

More growth = More Money and the people at the top want all the money they can get. I can’t really blame them anyone would love to see their profits go from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, to multi-millions it’s almost like a gambling addiction.

But it also goes to show someone how morals can go out the window for a lot of these people, and how amazing some CEOs are when they catch this early and provide a balance solution that takes complete care of their employees across the board while keeping the business sustainable IE: Insomniac Games ALWAYS on the best places to work list. The rest of the industry could learn.

jambola3d ago

honestly, the "real" enemy of gaming, is ourselves
if nobody bought horse armor, shitty dlc would have died almost overnight
if we stood firm and nobody bought games from companies that were bad with layoffs, it would be solved
we're the idiots supporting awful business practices, we are the ones enouraging it

TiredGamer2d ago

I think the reality that we don't want to convince ourselves of is that without the rise of "horse armor" and DLC, game budgets would have essentially stagnated (smaller teams/smaller games), or game prices would have risen much more dramatically than they have. There was an incessant drive for bigger worlds, infinite detail, and hundreds of hours of "gameplay" over the last two decades, that while perhaps a natural evolution of things, needed a suitable funding stream to accomplish.

HyperMoused2d ago

What...CEOs make tens of millions and that doesnt include SLT etc etc...we now have multiple editions of games, in game currency, MT's, battle passes.....and what do we get..worse game than what was coming out 20 years ago....dont drink the cool aid, its this nickel and dime crap that is absolutely leading us to gaming destruction.

senorfartcushion2d ago

This is the worst possible answer to this conundrum. Blaming the masses is blaming the only people who are constantly “told” to buy.

Consumers are the only ones not to blame here. People make their own choices all the time. Disney movies are bombing and DEInis being blamed. Has that been enough to put Disney out of business? No and it never will.

Christopher2d ago

Disagree. Businesses are able to do what they do because people are bad consumers and don't think critically about purchases. Disney got away with doing shit stuff for years and it's just the last year where people got tired of it. It's not like it didn't work for 5 years or so for Disney to do the things they've done. They'll just move onto another way to get people to see movies and it will be just as bad but more profitable until people wake up and realize it.

TiredGamer2d ago

Consumerism drives business behavior. It's not so much "blaming" as it is observing behavior. The point I'm making is that the direction that games have gone are driven by the spending. Consumers are spending on DLC and they are driving the expectation of more glitz and padded out (lengthier) games. If they continue to pay, they will continue to drive that direction until a threshold is reached that forces a change in behavior.

senorfartcushion2d ago

Corporate advertising is the most powerful force on the planet.

This is N4G for god sake, every day there are arguments between people who are Team Xbox and Team PlayStation because they’ve been convinced that having an identity built on paying money to Sony and Microsoft matters more than having one as individual gamers who can play whatever they want.

And THEN we get to the corporate advertising part: to play whatever you want is to sink MORE into the advertising pits, making it so that you can more than one specific product.

jambola2d ago

ah you're right
they were told to buy it, it's clearly impossible to avoid that
if enough people stopped supporting, it would stop
disney not stopping would only be because enough people didn't stop

Agreed. I’ve been saying for years, announce you won’t be buying the upcoming game because of the practices of the previous game, then you only have to stick to your guns once, see how quickly things change for the better.

We have to unite in what we shouldn’t purchase.

jambola2d ago

just imagine a world, fifa came out worse, nobody buys the next one until they see proof it's better and stick to it
or games being forced online for single player and nobody buys it

Greed and greedy people have and always will be the main issue for everything wrong in the world. Everything is a product to be exploited for monetary gain. Even when there are things that could help progress us along for the sake of making our lives easier that thing must be exploited for monetary gains. Anything that tells you otherwise is propaganda to make you complicit.

coolfool2d ago

I've never thought "DEI" (although the way most people use it doesn't match it's real definition) is the problem with games. Good games have continued to be good when they have a diverse cast, and likewise, bad games have continued to be bad. There isn't a credible example I've seen where a diverse cast has been the direct cause of a game being bad.
