I'd have to disagree. He never really seems to do much. You just find out his motivations, as weak as they usually are, and your purpose is to go and defeat him.

To me, the best video game villian is Handsome Jack. He had real motivations. Was completely psychotic. Perfect narcissist. Was a great metaphorical character for current social and political issues. And through all that, he was still relatable, and even likable in that anti-hero sort of way. He worked as both a good(-ish) guy in TPS, and as a villain, and even after his death, he's an interesting character that the other characters in the story can react to.

Handsome Jack will be a hard villain to top, while Gannondorf has a pretty standard archetypal and predictable persona.

I have to agree, as big of a Zelda fan as I am. While I still would not call him the BEST villain however, Wind Waker Ganondorf does actually get some development and motive behind his actions.

He actually wants to restore Hyrule, and bring back the Gerudo Tribe. In fact, you learn that his Tribe is the main reason he attacked Hyrule to begin with. The Gerudo were suffering in the desert, and Hyrule turned their back on them. They suffered scorching hot days, and cold harsh nights. As the Gerudo King, he envied the Hylians. He decided that for his people, he would take Hyrule from those that turned their back on them. It was their turn to live in luxury.

However due to his soul being a curse of Demise, he motivations got diluted from being power hungry. As seen in Ocarina of Time (which is the same Ganondorf), he was a corrupt ruler and a tyrant when he actually got his seat of power. His missiom shifted, as he sought more power from a completed triforce.

In Wind Waker, Ganondorf was humbled a bit. He was no longer after power, but instead wanted to reverse the damage done by the Great Flood. The reason we don't want that to happen however is that being a cursed man, he would have fallen back to his old ways and with the Kingdom of Hyrule already fallen...no one would be able to stand in his way this time.

Much deeper character arc for him in that game, and one of the few times he ventures outside his usual "stereotype" villain persona.

Yeah. There have been a couple games where they made the story deeper, where he was better. I just always felt that the way they presented him, and the stories in general in those games to not be as deep or resounding as they could be. I don't feel Borderlands story is exceptionally deep, but I felt HJ was a great villain because they obviously developed him a great deal.

Take your pick of Rpg villains:
- Sephiroth
- Golmez (sp)
- Persona 4 kidnapper (won't say his name)
- The "true" villain of Suikoden 2 (also won't say his name)

All of these are better than Ganondorf.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!
