Exclusive: Doom 64 Devs Reveal the Port Will Include a Brand New Chapter

USG asked Nightdive Studios about what's new with Doom 64, and whether the Unmaker is a better weapon than the BFG9000.

I wonder if this will tie in to the more recent DOOM games since DOOM 64 ended with the Doom Slayer locking himself in hell to continue fighting demons.

Its already been all but confirmed that Doom 2016 picked up where Doom64 left off. Which also means that the Doom Slayer in Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal is the same Doom Guy from the original games.

I mean, Doom 2016 started out with you waking up in a stone coffin with demonic symbols all over it and they explain that they pulled it out of Hell. It seems a little too on the nose for him to not be the same guy. And I don't think its any coincidence that they are re-releasing Doom64 right around Doom Eternal's release. Especially since Eternal is supposed answer that question.

But again, the evidence is pretty obvious that he's the same guy.

That just leaves us the awkward question is how does Doom 3 fit into all this?

CorndogBurglar1928d ago (Edited 1928d ago )

Yeah. Some people claim Doom 3 is its own continuity, and I tend to agree with that, only because its so different than the other games and it doesn't really fit in after Doom64, or even before it.

The only thing about Doom 3 is that Quake Arena (I think is the name?) has the "Doom Marine" in it as a playable character. Doom Marine is what he was called in Doom 3. But his biography in that game ties him to the original games too.

But I see that as something that's out of continuity. Its not even in a Doom game.

To me, Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Doom64, Doom 2016, and Doom Eternal are all the same continuity. I threw Wolfenstein in there because its been heavily hinted at in multiple games that Doom Guy/Doom Slayer is a descendent of BJ Blazkowitz from the Wolfenstein games.

Do you not see this happening during development? Like, why are we apologizing after the fact instead of stopping it during development?

Stopac5h ago

Criticism and reflection occur after the fact. The apology acknowledges the past criticisms with the new expansion and they're keeping transparency with players about it. Now that they've acknowledged it - it will be interesting to see what kind of cycle we'll get with a new expansion and I wonder if they're planning something special with beast master since they didn't mention it in the last live letter.

It's all good, as long as the price of the product decreases.

Stopac4h ago

The base game and expansion go on sale all the time and doesn't stay full price for very long since a new expansion is on the horizon.

If you're stating they should reduce the price of new expansions or the sub fee, no, that's not gonna happen lmao people aren't even complaining about that. They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy.

"They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy."

The product should be cheaper then.

I was unhappy with DT and have spent far less time in it than any other expansion but it's things like this that makes me respect Yoshi P. It's rare for such a high profile developer to be so candid in his assessment on a live game.

Stopac4h ago

Same, i've found my self resubbing every two patches instead of keeping it up. Don't own a home in the game so there's no point in keeping a constant sub going. The post story is getting interesting though.

Playdead co-founder slammed with lawsuit as bitter row with co-founder escalates

Playdead co-founder Dino Patti is allegedly being sued by his former studio and business partner.
Patti was threatened with a lawsuit earlier this year after he posted a now-deleted LinkedIn post that shared an "unauthorized" picture of co-founder Arnt Jensen and discussed some of Limbo's development. Patti said Jensen demanded a little over $73,000 in "suitable compensation and reimbursement," adding that he had "repeatedly" had such letters over the last nine years.
