Dreams Devs Looking to Improve Trending Tab to Highlight More Original Content

The Trending category in Dreams tends to favor remakes and viral content. And Media Molecule says it will continue to improve this to give original content better exposure.

AspiringProGenji1512d ago

I mean memes are life, but I would be annoyed with highlights full of memes. I hope they make a tab or a session only for memes tho

MasterCornholio1512d ago

Maybe you can use copy right to take them down. But there are plenty of people who still make original content so there really isn't a need to.

It's kind of on the owner of the copyright to say they dont approve. Sony could be preemptive to avoid problems, but generally, it's better if the hosting service doesnt try and decide what is appropriate or not. While I'm sure some of these remakes arent going to fly in the long run, and Nintendo is known to shut them down fast, it doesnt mean that some content owners wouldnt approve of these fan made games.

Some of it may depend on the extent of the remake. Sometimes it's just small.parts of a game, or things that could fall within fair use. For instance, a meme, created with creator made assets, isnt necessarily a copyright violation. But on those things, sony is likely to take the youtube path of caution to protect itself, over fighting for the creators.

If they dont, then I'd actually be pretty impressed, and it would serve as a good exercise to define fair use more clearly when it comes to user created content, as the laws are up to interpretation, despite being somewhat specific at the same time

Fair use won't help many of these creations. Anytime you tread even remotely close to "clone" territory, the cease and desists will be coming.

I give it only a few months before we start seeing the takedown notices come flying. We know Sony's got a lot of attorneys, but they won't be able to do much to help them when something as vague as a fan made game having the same "look and feel" is enough to justify a copyright claim.

If this is a fight Sony wants to have, I appreciate them for it. They'll lose, but it'd be nice to watch. Now I say that as someone who doesn't own the IP being used here. They probably won't appreciate it as much...

rainslacker1511d ago

Yeah. I think that maybe right now some light tribute or practice work isn't going to garner too much trouble for the creators. But eventually, some creators are going to push it with more content within those creations, and at that point, it goes from fair use derivative work, or fan appreciation, to production level work, which companies may feel threatened by, and even if they don't care too much, they have to protect their trademark, and not show signs of duplicity in what is allowed where. Some companies take a no exceptions outlook on such things....like Nintendo...others may lay out ground rules for what they consider acceptable. But, in the end, these companies are always within their rights to issue a cease and desist, or in the case of dreams, probably file a DMCA claim with Sony(like you see on YouTube). It would then be up to the creator to defend why it's valid content, which most won't, or can't afford, and Sony is likely to stay on the side of protecting their own ass from potential lawsuits for hosting the content....like what YouTube does.

I don't see Sony fighting too hard for the creators on this. They are part of the industry that would be issuing these claims, and they don't want to upset a lot of their partners by trying to make them look bad.

People will have to just expect this to happen eventually, but you know that Sony's probably still going to get grief for it. I also think that some people don't recognize when copyright is actually being infringed, and immediately jump to the side of the creators as if they are innocent and should be allowed to do whatever they want. Unfortunately, it just doesn't happen like that in the real world, nor should it. There's a fine line between fair use and infringement. If people want to make such things for their own use, have at it. Heck, even use it in a portfolio. Just don't post it publicly with a bunch of self marketing to draw attention to it.

The saving grace for some may be that Nintendo is so backwards sometimes, it may take them awhile to even notice...

Get your mario clones in while you can guys!

rainslacker1510d ago

I'm pretty confident that Nintendo knows what's going on in dreams. As of now, they probably don't want to be too fervent to stop these things. Plus, it's not uncommon for Nintendo to wait and do these things down the line, usually when there is a lot more investment into such things.

I'm not sure why Sony is so scared of promoting this game?

I understand that there are copyright fears, but remakes are what trends.

I posted that Tsushima clip to Twitter and it's pushing 400k views.

If it's a remake of a Sony IP there should be no issue.

I sent the Tsushima video to Shu, Sucker Punch, Goldfarb ect and NONE of them even liked it let alone retweeted or commented. Meanwhile my Tweet is getting more pub than many SIE promotional ads for Dreams.

It baffles me as to why someone like Goldfarb who is community manager for SP wouldn't get in on it. No response to my DMs either.

That video blew up with no help from the big guys. Hopefully us common folk can continue our guerrilla marketing in hopes that this incredible game will succeed. We do it for free because we believe in the product, your welcome Sony.

Dreams Dev Media Molecule Says Layoffs Impact Planned Community and Curation Support

IGN writes: "Media Molecule has said the layoffs at the Sony-owned studio have affected plans for ongoing community and curation support in Dreams."

Inverno25d ago

How self sustained can DREAM be when it's basically stuck on PS4? I don't think it's even gotten a PS5 upgrade. Ending support for what is essentially a game making engine is basically death. SONY did DREAMS dirty.

This is really cool, it’s a shame they didn’t do more of this during the first 5 years of dreams. Demonstrates how powerful a tool it is. I kind of got the feeling puzzle types of games were really going to be the best use of dreams for putting together a whole complete game. More ambitious things never went beyond tech demos really. Or did they? I stopped really looking after a while

Yea, this is John Beech's creation.. I remember him showing these trains in production 2 or so years ago, so it's pretty amazing how far he's taken it!

John's story is pretty awesome. He was just a normal guy working a construction job, and he built Little Big Planet levels on PS3 just for fun. Media Molecule contacted, then hired him bc his creations were so good.

He has been a lead designer for MM, 14 yrs, until recently he became their new Creative Director this year when Mark Healey stepped down.

Beech is a super nice and humble guy, I've been following him for a few years now since i first saw his photo realistic "Traditional English Breakfast" creation in Dreams.

So you can see why this creation is the best of the best! I find Beech's story super inspiring, someone who did not go through the traditional route of game design training with nothing but a whole lot of passion and a hell of an amount of undiscovered talent!

Inverno263d ago

Apparently there's a movie that will use Dreams engine, but I believe it's still in the making. That's probably as ambitious as it'll get unfortunately.

This looks gorgeous and fantastic. Really hope Sony reconsiders pulling support for Dreams, now that it’s coming to Plus.

I'm really hoping they create a sequel that they can expand upon with multiplayer and huge connected worlds. This could be Sony's Rec Room or Roblox if they supported it right. It would be the best looking of the bunch for sure!

Honestly, I think Sony should put Media Molecule in charge of creating a new Playstation Home platform, utilizing these player creation tools they've developed.

I can only imagine how amazing a cohesive PS Home world could be in PSVR, but they should of course include flat support just like Rec Room/Roblox.
