Nintendo Not Afraid of New Console Generation as Switch is Too “Different” Anyway

With their eyes firmly on the future, Nintendo's Shuntaro Furukawa and Shigeru Miyamoto had a lot to say about the company going forward.

I don't think that either the Series X or the PS5 will hurt Nintendo sales. At most they will make third parties less inclined to port their stuff to the Switch.

What Nintendo will have to deal with going foward is streaming. But it will take a couple of years to it become a threat. And when it finally reach that point is likely that Nintendo would already had moved past the Switch.

oldmess1952d ago

I agree that Nintendo has to pay close attention to streaming. Depending on how they play their hand, it can either be a potent threat against the value proposition of the Switch (play meaty games anywhere), or it can be the opposite and end up being Switch's final trump card.

I don't need to explain to you how it is a threat – that is the point of view you already brought to the conversation. On the other way, I think it needs to be reminded that streaming can ultimately be very beneficial for the Switch – if Nintendo allows any/some of their (current) competitors cloud services on top of what Nintendo currently offers. There's been rumblings about Microsoft's xCloud, but it wouldn't be a shock to me seeing Nvidia's GeForce Now someday on the Switch, with how close Nintendo and Nvidia regarding the Switch.

So you never know... I'm sure it's going to be fascinating to watch it all unfold in the next 5 years or so!

Vits1952d ago

I see were you are coming from, but I don't think that would really help the console much. Mainly because it's was not created for streaming, it doesn't offer any sort of mobile connectivity, communication features and it is a extra device to carry around.

Also there is one big issue in Nintendo themselves. They are the company that didn't allow Netflix to be on their console or even offer a proper internet browser to it. So I find hard to see them allowing third party services. That said I don't think that they will just ignore streaming as whole, but they are likely have their own service with a "buy to play" approach.

2pacalypsenow1954d ago

Wait so now they’re not competing because they’re too different?

So like I thought, the Switch is a portable and should be compared to Vita 3DS etc..

Neonridr1954d ago

VIta is dead.. So Nintendo has no competition then?

I think what is meant by them being different is that they offer something that nobody else does in the same capacity. Sure cloud gaming and streaming is an option, but the requirement for an always online connection poses problems for that that the Switch can circumvent (for SP games).

2pacalypsenow1953d ago

I would say they compete with Cell Phones.

mcstorm1953d ago

2pacalypsenow I agree but also disagree.

Most phone gamers tent to be a pickup and play for a small amount of time where handheld gamers tend to play for longer stints and this is where Nintendo have the up over phones as you can sit play your game at home, but then when you go out carry on that game to.

plus carrying the switch is also easer then carrying a controller and a cradle for a phone to sit in.

Eveyone has different thoughts on different devices but I do think the switch ticks alot of boxes for people.

Silly gameAr1953d ago

Like I said man. The dumbest, most confusing gen ever is coming up.

CorndogBurglar1953d ago

They didn't say they are different because they are portable...

Thundercat771954d ago

Nintendo is on a different segment of the market. The Switch is more a handheld device than a console. They have an audience that love their exclusive games which is what matters.

Microsoft couldn't compete against Nintendo and now they are shamefully moving away to compete with lesser subscriptions companies as Google and Amazon.

badz1491953d ago

with the Lite, it's LITERALLY a handheld

Knushwood Butt1953d ago

Yeah, but it's so different.

/s

Thundercat771953d ago

Exactly. It shouldn't be compared to consoles.

AK911953d ago

Switch sales will not stop with the release of PS5 but they will certainly decrease due to the new hardware available, to counteract this I see them releasing a Switch Pro/2 sometime in the future.

JackBNimble1952d ago

Why bother with a pro , just release a next gen console and continue supporting switch as a handheld.

But I'm sure Nintendo fans would rather keep last gen tech and continue the argument that power doesn't matter.

ninja Gaiden being released 8 days apart is insane MS hasn't learned anything with shoulder to shoulder releases. October 29 for Outer Worlds and October 21 for Ninja Gaiden. These games now range from 60 to 80$. Yalls audience might GP it but other platforms have to buy it and your average person won't shell out that kinda money a week apart.

franwex13h ago

Aren’t those games made for different audiences though?

Lightning775h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Yes but what if you want both?

Not everyone can buy both.

Reaper22_12h ago

Well, you dont have to buy it. Noone is making gamers buy it a week apart. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Lightning775h ago

You want another Doom The Dark Ages scenario? I'm surprised Oblivion and Expedition 33 did well with a simultaneous release. Clearly that fatigue was definitely felt with Doom.

They need at least 2 weeks apart.

coolbeans7h ago

You're talking about a first-person RPG and a third-person action game though. So, it's a bit different than EA putting Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 back-to-back.

"A year packed with major releases for Xbox consoles, PC , Game Pass and PS"*

V9upped9h ago

PS should copy Xbox and actually develop some games for PS5 😂

dveio7h ago

I count 7 original multiplatform IPs, which were ultimately bought and are now published by Microsoft.

Sigh.

V9upped7h ago

As is normal in this industry

dveio6h ago

Yeah.

I must have skipped those years being frozen in Area 51 in which 75 billion dollar acquisitions of around 25 original multiplatform IPs were already normal.

V9upped6h ago

Xbox, PlayStation, Take2, Ubisoft, EA are mostly made up of purchased studios and games.

Nintendo are the only ones not doing tons of acquisitions.

dveio4h ago

If you look closer again, then you'll notice that I, at any point, didn't even mentioned the adjective "bad".

But you.

V9upped4h ago

Because it’s Microsoft and not Sony

Lightning773h ago

The "sigh" means your displeased. Don't make excuses why is it bad?

dveio3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Nope, 'displeased' ain't the feeling I had when reading that article.

But speaking of pleasure:

Are you personally pleased with that line-up Xbox have in store for you in the Series' fifth year?

Edit: I didn't downvote you.

PS5/Pro/Switch 2 version of RDR2 seems most likely. I’d love a RDR3 but that seems years away

Cacabunga1d 1h ago

Id be happy for just a 60fps patch

OmegaSoldati1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Agreed, but at the same time RD2 came out in 2018. Could it be a remake of Red Dead 1?

Spoiler:

Marston died in the end of Red Dead and Red Dead 2 is set before that. Im curious now. What news could it be?

mkis00717h ago

I'm pretty sure the next game will be another prequel as the story really has no where to go as far as being a western after red dead redemption. The next game will end with the ferry boat incident.

Profchaos1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

Their contracts are iron clas if they leak anything legit they are threatened with immense legal action.

My hopes for what this is are minimal its probably a meet and greet with the cast

I dont see why they would be involved in a upgraded version of rdr2 when the dialogue hasn't changed

thorstein22h ago

He seems to have been cleared to do this as he purposely picked up the game, streamed it, and made the announcement.

How about an official level editor for Boltgun?

jznrpg1d 2h ago

I’ll get Space Marine 2 when it’s cheaper. I don’t pay more than half price for short games.
