Do Games Handle Mental Health Issues Well

Games have a long way to go when it comes to this difficult subject matter. How does one properly handle mental illness, especially in the digital world?

Do they have to? Also, who cares?

People who're interested in playing well made games? Good stories handle serious subjects well. Great examples off the top of my head would be how KOTOR handled the morality, God of War on parenting, and Hellblade on mental illness. Can i say these games would have been even half as memorable without their strong story elements? I'm not sure I can.

That's why we should push for games to handle serious subject matter more authentically. You personally don't have to care, but it would mean you're not pushing the medium to become better.

You don't, obviously, but many do. When they make a game controller specifically for disabled people, do you say...who cares? Don't be cruel. Everyone deserves to get what they want out of a game and if developers can give it to them. That's a wonderful thing.

Smokehouse1542d ago

They are not obligated to do so imo. If a developer wants to take it seriously and delve into realistic subject matter that’s fine. If they want to be completely unrealistic for the sake of fun then that’s fine too but let’s not pretend it’s at someone else’s expense. That’s new culture garbage.

First it was gender, now we moving onto mental health. You do realise this is for entertainment purposes and not for education and not a tool for rahabilitation or in asisting therapy to mental health. Its all fiction. Lets not try and "Kotaku/Polygon" this up ay?

Spurg1542d ago

Mental issues are a serious issue, not an agenda forced being people. Mental issues are understandable and relatable because most of us suffer from it in one form or another. When playing Hellblade there were parts I could relate to and made understand and appreciate that the Dev was trying to achieve.

Lol, please. The fact you even attempted to draw that analogy is pathetic.

If you're not into strong storytelling that's fine, but dont act like some of the best stories of this generation haven't touched on very serious subject matter or that they do so only for attention. Go watch a Michael Bay movie if you just want to watch something shallow.

VTKC1542d ago

Well my story telling is strong enough to trigger you so its good enough for me and you for that matter.

Whats Michael bay movies got to do with it when we talking about videogames in whether its handling mental health? And you should stop watching woke movies?

TK-661542d ago (Edited 1542d ago )

"Well my story telling is strong enough to trigger"

Wow is this 2014? Get those air-horns because people are (((TrIgGeReD)))

If your gonna clap back at least try and come up with an entertaining meme XD

Segata1542d ago

No. Nor do films. TV shows. Otherwise people would be more educated and not use the term "mental health" as a blanket term.

Earthblade is a 2D fantasy platformer in a seamless pixel art world and is the next release from the Celeste team, well it’s still is but likely will not be released in 2024 as Extremely OK Games’ head Maddy Thorson explains in an official blog post. Earthblade was first announced in April 2021 and then had its first trailer at The Game Awards in 2022. You are Névoa, an enigmatic child of Fate returning at long last to Earth, in this fantasy platformer. Earthblade’s lush pixel art world offers seamless exploration, challenging combat, and countless mysteries to pick apart. Celeste was an amazing game, so we know this will be too, we just will need to wait at least another year.
