Why PlayStation 4 Beat the Xbox One

With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on the horizon, let’s gain some insight and take a look at why the PlayStation 4 beat the Xbox One. If you're a sales number geek, you've probably noticed a massive disparity between PS4 and Xbox One sales.

So, what went wrong for Microsoft? And what did Sony do so right?

First, Sega wasn't an all around failure. See: Genesis

Second, Sony beat the arrogance of Microsoft last gen in every conceivable way this gen. Games, add-ons like VR, services, awards, sales, variety, reviews, etc. So much so, Microsoft had to completely hide underneath the covers. And Sony did it in the most humble way compared to Ken Kutaragi's way. Even though he was a genius.

Third, Microsoft didn't win in BC because Sony never offered it. It's like saying, "Haha!" "We won." But you're the only contestant. And as for Game Pass, what did it win? The GaaS award? Lol! Article writer calls it innovative. By killing your launch sales to push subscriptions. How quaint.

Yes. Sony concentrating on what matters and giving their fans what they want, which is more games, new IPs and things like VR that the community didn't know they wanted, is why Sony curb stomped Microsoft.

Round three will be an interesting boxing match. But as the article said, Sony offering BC will allow Sony to keep its many fans until the PS5 library grows.

Rude-ro1963d ago (Edited 1963d ago )

And.. bc would/should be considered a failure due to it being reactionary and introduced later in the life cycle..
As in, a lot of consumers trade in their old hardware/games, especially first year buyers...
ie bc could have been a reason, along with the false promise of cloud power, to retain committed consumers.. instead allowing a window of opportunity for consumers to switch brands.. of which they did since Microsoft’s install base dropped by millions in the first two years.

Eonjay1963d ago

PlayStation one again because of it's huge following mixed with it's affordable price. It was always going to win. The disparity was made worse by Microsoft's intense arrogance. They believed that they had enough journalists in the pocket to impose it's will on the entire industry regardless of the wish of the consumer.

Do you remember Albert on the forums swearing that PS4 wasn't more powerful. That's called lying to the consumer. Remember when they said DRM was baked into the system. They think you are so stupid they can just lie to you.

Remember when they said deal with it. That's equal to telling the consumer: Bitch shut up and take it. Remember when they shut up and by the 360 if you don't like DRM?

Yeah. That's why they lost so bad.

The Wood1963d ago (Edited 1963d ago )

It won because Sony was clear on their target audiences wants and their ethos on growing your own was unwavering. Xbox's fall of last gen also aided sony. Microsoft's inability to release games in the final 3rd of last gen didn't sit well with many gamers nor their over reliance on the trifecta of Halo Gears Forza. Their reveal this gen just compounded any negative feelings many gamers had. Sony are just better in the gaming market globally. More exclusives more variety more new ip's and more ways to play via VR.

I think the Xbone will go down as the console with the least number of exclusive game EVER! is any of its game still exclusive to the system?

1962d ago
nucky641963d ago

i think it's really simple - sony wins this gen (and last 25 years) because they consistently produce great 1st party games.
i don't think next gen will be any different -MS is not going to be able to overtake sony in one gen. they've had 3 gens already and still haven't gotten it right. their brand isn't as strong as the PS brand (right now). until the xbox brand earns more trust from a LOT more potential buyers - sony is going to continue to win the console wars.

neutralgamer19921963d ago

Price, no mixed messages to their consumers and games. Price matters so much gamers just don't seem to understand. We the core gamers can justify $399-$499 but casuals don't and if any company wants to dominate than casuals have to buy in

darthv721963d ago

wouldnt it have been easier to just say Sony had the better games, better studios and better hardware? They did everything right to avoid the same pitfalls that MS got caught up in. If anything, they let MS experience the same growing pains they too experienced with their 3rd console.

As for MS, they were coming off a high and thought they could run things a certain way and the gamers would have to follow. They didnt expect the backlash they got and it was very humbling for them. Making all sorts of changes to rectify the problem did yield them some of their fanbase back but obviously there are those who hold grudges and just didnt find the platform to have the same appeal the 360 did.

We could at least let this generation end before we go over this topic again.

2pacalypsenow1963d ago

Generation is already over.

Sony won this round.

strayanalog1963d ago

That was all but given with Microsoft's infamous May 2013 press conference, but officially it's not.

I would like to think this particular topic has been covered enough, especially in the last 4 months, to the point that it feels more like common knowledge.

xX-oldboy-Xx1963d ago

stray - Nintendo is curb stomping xbox now - Sony has all but forgotten them.

According to Larry Hryb - the first to 10 million wins - we known how that turned out.

strayanalog1963d ago

Not a hundred percent, oldboy, but I think Don Mattrick said that craziness. I've always felt the "console wars" were more like a marathon myself.

xX-oldboy-Xx1963d ago

Of course they're a marathon, but this gen is done and dusted.

A few more massive exclusives from Sony and we're out of here.

BehindTheRows1963d ago (Edited 1963d ago )

The 'we need to let the generation end first' conflicts with 'this should be common knowledge'. On top of that, I've not seen too many of these articles posted on N4G lately (unlike the mountain of 'Xbox Is Lovely, Please Read Why' articles). Unlike an opinion piece, this actually pinpoints factual reasons why the PS4 dominated the Xbox One.

Sure, it's common knowledge that Xbox is nowhere near the size and scope of PlayStation around the world, but nothing wrong with an article that specifies why between these two particular devices.

Elda1963d ago

PS4 exclusive software portfolio.

IMissJimRyan1963d ago

This is essential, but it is an incomplete explanation.

The console market is, in my view, a combination of quality software, proprietary software, hardware capacity, services, advertising, and price. Whoever best combines all these characteristics wins the market.

Quality software both PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U had.
Exclusive software was more present on PlayStation 4 and Wii U.
Hardware capacity the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One had.
Services were good on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Propagating was better on PlayStation 4.
Price Wii U won and PlayStation 4 took second place.

Take all these factors and ponder. None of them guarantee market leadership alone. But whoever comes out with the best grade gets it. In the current generation was the PlayStation 4. In the next? We don't know, but the PlayStation 5 will be well positioned again.

Elda1963d ago (Edited 1963d ago )

Again...the PS4 is the leading console worldwide because of most of it's AAA 1st,2nd & 3rd party exclusive software library. As you can see the Switch is following suit because of it's AAA exclusive library. The XBO is last because it's lack of a current consistent AAA exclusive software library, from 2016 until 2019 the only AAA exclusives they had was Gears 4 & 5 & Forza car games.

IMissJimRyan1963d ago

I disagree. The Wii U's AAA title library was as good as Switch's, and it wasn't as successful. The Wii did not have so many great titles and was successful.

I continue with the same argument: everything is a combination of factors.

TheHateTheyGive1963d ago

Wii u was an excellent console, i loved the dual screen aspect. in maden (which switch dont get) i was able to draw up plays on the 2nd screen, in splinter cell it was great, nba 2k it was excellent. mario maker on wii u is better than the switch version because of the 2 screens. Wish nintendo stood in the dedicated home console business and refined the 2nd screen

Elda1963d ago

The Wii was successful because of the gimmicky controller & the family casual games. PS4 & Switch are selling well due to exclusives. All 4 generation of PS consoles have sold extremely well than the competition due to the exclusive content the console had. Exclusive games are the #1 important factor first & foremost for a console to sell well.

Thundercat771963d ago (Edited 1963d ago )

PS4 is overall a much better product. It has more and better exclusive games.

PlayStation destroyed Xbox so hard that Microsoft even stopped reporting their official numbers and were force to create gamepass to deal with their low software sales.

Even Nintendo stood in later and is doing better than Microsoft but hey, at least Xbox fans are having a good time making fun of a console logo "facepalm*.

DARK_WOLF1963d ago

The ps4 is a much better product. Just facts not even opinion anymore.

Ive owned ALOT of consoles and the xbox one is the only one i can think of thats had constant problems.

All gen its been waiting for games and dealing with a glitchy slugfest broken OS waiting for the next update to fix or add a feature ect.. and its still glitchy asf and slow to use and startup. The controllers are cheap toys made to break.

I spent all generation rooting for xbox waiting for games saying MS is king of software theyl fix "insert problem here" itl be good as one day remembering days of old with og and 360.

Now im lucky if my digital games i own even work because every other time i try play it says i need to install my game. Even though its installed already and i can see it right there installed in manage games. Ive spent thousands on xbox games i freakn hate this system now it sucks and i hate the direction they are going with the xbox brand. Abandoning home base for a master of none aproach wanting to be everywhere.

xXMessiah23Xx1963d ago

Xbox, move to digital only was to early adopters hated and SOny used that against Microsoft from thee launch on really took advantage of that situation. Xbox also continued to make gamers buy that stupid Kinect. The XBox was rushed it was not ready for release it took about a year after release to be ready for gamers. AS an Xbox fan even I played only PS4 titles for the first year, year and half. After that absolute horrible launch and first year XBox got on track but SOny had already won that battle.

Ricegum1963d ago

Sony continued to dominate well after that. The launch was horrible for Microsoft but Sony have been better all gen, and will again next gen.

1963d ago
xXMessiah23Xx1962d ago

Sony had better exclusives. Xbox X played everything else better. So to me its a mixed bag.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Is The Kind Of Game That Makes Me Wish I Could Play One Thing At A Time

I respect people who can dig deep on one game, and only one game, but I can't do it.

I used to play multiple games at a time but because of the time constraints I have I don’t have a choice but to play one game at a time or I’ll end up with some unfinished games. I like to get platinums for the games I enjoy the most so it can take me a long time to get to the next game.

It definitely takes some will power as I always have a stack of games I want to play at all times. But most of the games I play are really good and I am fully immersed when I’m playing a single game at a time.

raWfodog12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Same here. I’ll focus on a game that I really enjoy and get the most out of it before moving onto the next title. That is why I have a massive backlog of games now.

Armaggedon1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Same for me. I play so many games, currently playing oblivion, expedition, blades of fire, bg3 with friends , avowed, and Nioh 2. After learning more about myself and gaining mastery, I have developed an ability to get fulfillment from a game without needing to “complete” it. Unless of course, a game hooks me for the story, in which case I have to complete it to see what happens. I have discovered that in terms of gameplay, one can get most if not all of the expected experience in about 25% of progress through play.

Ninver20h ago

Sounds like renting is the best way to go in your case. No point in buying games you won't complete.

Armaggedon17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

It depends on what one deems as “complete.” For some, it is completing the story, and for others it is completing all tasks and objectives. Usually when this happens, people will feel “that was fun, whats next.” There is always a whats next. Cant think of anyone that has consumed media and thought “I am completely satisfied and will not need to play or watch another. I have simply mastered this “hunger” if you will. I am able to get so far in a game and then move to another without needing to reach a certain requirement. A benefit of this is that I do not get bored, as that game I didn’t beat still has mystries to unravel and new things I haven’t done.

Incel outrage is one of the reasons gamers aren't taken seriously.

jambola1d 12h ago

so you're pro censorship and insult anyone who disagrees
gotcha

Flewid6381d 6h ago

Imagine not knowing that you can express discontent without raging like an incel

REDDURT1d 2h ago

Everyone is a incel who won’t fall inline.

gold_drake21h ago

no i think censoring a 18+ game is incredibly stupid.

im an adult and dont need to be coddled

CrimsonWing6920h ago

So when something gets censored, people just aren’t supposed to say anything?

We can praise a game’s violence, crude humor, or edgy writing all day, but the moment someone says a design is hot or pushes back on censorship in an M-rated game, it’s suddenly “incel outrage”?

Give me a break. If you’re posting on a gaming news site, you’re already in the same boat — you’re not above the rest of the community just because you’re uncomfortable with fanservice.

Criticizing censorship isn’t incel behavior — it’s called being a fan with standards.

jambola8h ago

you can complain if it's violence, but not skin, especially on a female character
and as we all know, small things never grow into bigger problems

MDTunkown16h ago

You know first remaster sales wasn’t great so introducing new censorship to an ancient game that would piss fans isn’t a good strategy.

guess i'll wait for a sale
can't bring myself to support censorship this much

jznrpg1d 9h ago

It’s not much of a change but totally unnecessary to be changed in the first place.

hot4play1d 4h ago

I’m still holding out for a physical release on PS5 or Switch. Has Capcom confirmed whether a disc version is still in the works?

DarXyde1d 2h ago

How is it censorship if Capcom is the one that made the change of their own volition? I could understand if they did it because they were told to, but that doesn't seem to be the case. At this point, it's a creative change.

You could make the argument that Oyu's costume was only more revealing because they wanted to appeal to horny teens at the time and this is what they would prefer to do.

We don't really know, but it was Capcom's decision, so why is this a big deal?

Rebel_Scum1d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

Its isnt censorship. There’s just a weird crowd of internet folk who cry about these sorts of changes.

At the end of the day they are the creators. They can change their art whenever and however they see fit. Happens in every artistic medium.

MDTunkown16h ago

The game is over 20 year old and remaster wasn’t made by og developers even Capcom CEO was someone else back then. So they took an old game from another period and made changes not to offend modern gamers.
But if you buying a remaster you just want higher definition and frame rate and having same experience as the game originally launched.

DarXyde1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

"So they took an old game from another period and made changes not to offend modern gamers."

So your criticism is that it's modernized? Modernization of gaming takes many forms. Even MGS3∆ has made modernizations. I don't know how old you are, but, believe it or not, people who were young-ish when these games came out are not the target audience of these remakes and remasters. Games get modernized for a modern target audience. Just as some mechanics are dated, so too are some themes. I think you unintentionally described it best: the game is modernized (i.e., made for the modern target demographic). It's not all about us.

"But if you buying a remaster you just want higher definition and frame rate and having same experience as the game originally launched."

This makes zero sense. So based on your argument here, higher definition and frame rate would not change the experience... But an undershirt on a supporting character does? What are you even saying?

jambola8h ago

yeah
it they remove half the game and make you pay a subscription
who cares right? no big deal? capcoms decision?

you can split hairs if you wants, different name, same result
self censorship if anythign

DarXyde1h ago

You would say that, as you come in with this straw man argument?

They're not removing half the game. They're not making you pay a subscription. They covered up a pair of tatas.

That's it. That's literally it. In no world is your silly comparison even remotely the same thing or indicative of a slippery slope.
