Sony's PS5 Controller Needs to Finally Add This One Crucial Feature

Sony's new controller add-on is be a welcome addition, but the PlayStation 5 (PS5) controller really needs to have these buttons by default.

I just hope they shrink the touch pad, it gets in the way when you're trying to pause the game lost a game of Madden because of it (made me use all my timeouts and I needed them on a last 2 minute drive)

When we first saw the ds4 I thought that touchpad was gonna be revolutionary. It hasn't lived up to what I originally had in mind.
I'm not sure if they should shrink it tho, it has never got in my way so I cannot relate.
Maybe the feature will come into fruition next gen .
So far it's been a glorified pause button

The touchpad bugged me when it was used for anything other than a button, like swiping around in kill zone was awfull. They should make it smaller at the least or just add another button

nitus102007d ago

What game uses the DS4's touchpad as a pause button?

I predominately play RPG's and some features actually use the swipe (The Witcher 3 and Gravity Rush) and on others, the touchpad acts as a multi-touch device (try Dark Souls 2 and 3).

gangsta_red2007d ago

The touchpad was supposed to originally be used for a lot of mobile games that were going to be ported over to the PS4 in the beginning. This is when mobile gaming was at a height of popularity.

Ps4 and vita were designed to be highly complimentary to one another. This is why most people feel that it was added. Some features were supposedly going to be common among games on both systems. I personally think maybe their social features had some part in it as well.

Sony never stated specifically why it was included to my knowledge. It was pretty underutilized, but if BC is a consideration, then its unlikely to be removed. To many games used it as extra buttons. The swiping could be simulated through other means with combo buttons and the analog stick

Lmao 🤣 at glorified pause button that was funny, I thought they were tryna make it compatible with Vita for crossplay

I have literally never encountered this problem and I have thick, wide thumbs.

I'm sure you haven't, but I have and know others that have and as you can see others have their own issues with it too. All I'm asking is shrink it, making it smaller hurts no one and only helps ppl like me. The controller is already small as it is, a touch pad taking up 25-33% of it's top surface is too much

I thought this extension was an early Aprils fools joke. I dont get what its for? Im perfectly fine with the buttons I have already, and why the hell an expensive OLED screen on the backside of the controller? I never look at the backside of my controller

Ricegum2007d ago

Mainly aimed at competitive play, so players can use select buttons more conveniently. Also, it's not expensive and the screen is to easily identify what buttons the back buttons have been assigned to. I'd assume it'll be built in to the PS5 controller.

travestyj2007d ago

Yeah I don't know wh you are getting downvotes. This thing is $30, most peripherals are more expensive then that. The screen allows you to set up the controller on multiple devices without needing an app or stopping your game. It's pretty genius actually. Have it preordered.

I don't care about the extra features of an elite controller but want to try back buttons so it is perfect.

Stanjara2007d ago

To map buttons.
Oled is for the user set up. It's basically for competitive shooters.

The idea is that you map jump button (ex) to the rear button so that you don't move your finger of the right stick that you are aiming with. That way you can jump and keep an aim on the target.

one2thr2007d ago

Small OLED screens aren't expensive. Especially the small $5 to $10 non-RGB screens.

You can get a 5pack of non-OLED screens for $30

Can probably assume that the screens a either made in-house or bought in bulk, which brings the price down even further.

DethWish2007d ago

Ah my problem is that I dont play many shooters on console then! Makes sense though, thanks for clearing it up :)

ShadowWolf7122007d ago

Can also be used by gamers who have certain disabilities to be able to better play certain games without putting too much strain on their hands.

The price also falls massively short of the elite controller.
