First PS5 Game Footage Is Underwhelming

Gearbox's Godfall is an upcoming PS5 game, dropping holiday 2020. A "looter slasher", Jules and Scott of Whatculture aren't very impressed.

People think that just because they showed a pre-rendered "in engine" video of an early in development hellblade that that's how Next-Gen is going to look like and Godfall falls way short from it, go and compare Godfall to Warframe and you can definitely see a big improvement, something like that would be a fairer comparison.

I'm sure Godfall will look great but the reveal was definitely underwhelming imo. Hellblade had a much bigger impact and if you compare it to the first hellblades cut-scenes it's a huge improvement.

I don't think it's just in engine. From the interview with the developer, its rendered in real time on a ps5. In engine can mean it's rendered using the engine but on much more powerful hardware. Rendered in real time on console is more impressive

I dont even think it was real PS5 footage. It seems more likely to be PC footage but indicative of what the PS5 will also look like. Didnt someone do something similar back when Assassin Creed was first shown? First shown to be PS3 but was actually a PC under the table.

I read somewhere that the developer confirmed that it was PC footage. A lot of developers do the same thing if the game is being released on a PC as well. Also, it looks good for the art style it's going for.

The amount of misinformation and and negative spin is baffling in this video, I can't even organize my thoughts.

First of all, why are we judging a cinematic teaser as if it's a gameplay trailer? It's silly to dissect it to such a degree. These cinematic teasers are just to set the tone and reveal the game. And the title is misleading, it made me think they analyzed the gameplay footage.

These guy said that obviously the inspiration was Destiny and that clearly it's generic.

If they bothered to research they'd easily find the inspirations were The Stormlight Archive, The First Law, The Foundation series, and Monster Hunter in terms of weapon variety.

These are bad ass high fantasy and classic Sci Fi novels. Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, Asimov. These are impressive inspirations and anything but generic gaming fare. One of the guys even briefly mentions he loves high fantasy. Well do some research, open your eyes.

They go on to almost guarantee that Godfall will be a Souls clone "with loot". They scoff at this and denounce loot.

Again, do some research. Counterplay said the combat is going to be very offensive minded and instead of defensive oriented one on one encounters like in the Souls genre, the game will quite often feature the player going one on three or one on many. They wanted Godfall to be more akin to Bayonetta or DMC combat wise, and it very well might have aspects of those games. To an extent.

They scoffed at the idea of loot in a slasher and acted like the game would feature one set of combat animations and limited weapon variety.

Godfall does feature ranged attacks, but the emphasis is on melee. However, the devs literally listed Monster Hunter as an inspiration because of THE WEAPON VARIETY. Counterplay said the game will include a huge amount of varied weapons all featuring multiple upgrade slots and augmenting abilities. The loot won't just be "a different color flame on your torch" or whatever they said.

And though they were acting like Gearbox was the developer, they are the publisher and imo it bodes well for a loot heavy game to be published by one of the Kings of loot.

I'm not sure why they acted like loot was a bad thing anyway? Diablo, Borderlands, any good rogue lite. Loot is phenomenal when done right. Was opening chests, gaining new guns and synergies in Enter the Gungeon not incredibly fun? Is Warframe not addictive through getting loot and augmenting your builds? Godfall claims to put a huge emphasis on skillful combat and deep loot. That doesn't sound bad, why bag on it?

At the end they claim that Sony always hangs back for the competition and that they often copy others. They even have the fall to say that Sony waited for MS to go first in regards to talking about their next gen console, that Sony copied another company (Oculus?) for VR, and that Sony copied PS+.

First, Sony talked about PS5 in Wired magazine. They were the first to State the name of their console, the first to talk about the hardware and SSD/Ray tracing, and the first to get the dev kit out.

Second, Sony had VR in development years before Oculus was even a company. They had a God of War VR demo running on PS3 in somewhere around 2011 if I'm not mistaken.

Third, MS copied Sony in terms of the monthly games on XBL.

There is no doubt that there are other games in development, especially first-party next-gen exclusive titles that will look stunning. These are their impressions regarding the in-engine trailer that was shown at The Game Awards. The gameplay snippet was revealed afterwards, which looked quite good with some great real-time reflections/raytracing.

The media (western) and xbox fans have done their load over an in-engine trailer from a studio known for its striking visuals.

The only actual gameplay has been shown by a relatively unknown studio.

Sony 1st Party is where it's at when it comes to visuals in console gaming - that cannot be denied nor even debated at this point.

And the original Hellblade was a gorgeous game, so the sequel with backing from MS, at the new console reveal was always going to impress in terms of production value and visuals. NT is a MS first party now and MS had vested interest in this reveal trailer going well, to a degree that is not comparable with Sony and Godfall otherwise Sony would've waited to reveal Godfall alongside the official PS5 reveal.

Last gen there were quite a few studios with serious “best visuals” contenders.

Forza Horizon on Xbox One X (4K)

All these were also great looking games. It is not like Sony games were the only or the best ones... Sure, they had their beauties and some were outstanding, but you make it sound like every other developer could just learn from them. That is not the case.

Honestly, while it probably doesn't require next gen hardware, if this game is a fun looter shooter even remotely as engaging as Borderlands, then it's going to be fine. Borderlands wasn't a graphical triumph, but it won awards, and had a long standing engaged player base that lasted so long, it would make any of these GaaS chasers jelous.

But, I do find it amusing that people are acting like the game is from Sony itself. All they did was have a marketing deal to slap their logo at the end. If Ninja Theory could make the trailer they did, then wait until Guerrilla Games....one of the top graphics developers in the world....decide to do their trailer.

HB2 looked good. I give it the credit it deserves. But it's laughable that some people are acting like Sony has shown anything for next gen, and ready to claim that Sony has already lost....all while pointing to GodFall as proof.

Truth is you haven't, because my problem with MS isn't their games, it's the lack of games, and the complete abandonment of this gen for so long.

I've been positive about Hellblade 2. I'm looking forward to Flight Simulator. Everwild has my interest. I'm curious about a couple rumored projects from them. I think they're finally doing what I, and many others said they need to do after all these years.

I still won't buy an XSX, and a game like this in the past may not have interested me, but after a recent convert to loving Borderlands makes me give this game more attention. I'm not going to crap all over MS next gen, or their games, which I"ve never done unless they were bad, because as of now, the only reason I'm so vitriolic towards them is because of how they conducted themselves this gen. Next gen they can do what they want, and my only stake in the matter will be philosophical industry spanning issues which would probably apply to all.

In any case, why would I be all over this game? It's not like MS would be making it. Seems some people are all over this game, and not in a good way, because as of right now, it is about the only thing they have to go on, as tenuous as it is.

TLOU2 looks great but cant compare to gears 5 which is running in native 4k and 60 FPS.

Godfall isn't a Souls style game. Counterplay confirmed that it's more offense oriented and you will often be facing multiple enemies at a time.

The Warframe comparison is more accurate. Warframe, Monster Hunter, and some Smite (God's) influence.

Pretty incredible inspirations as well. Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, and more. Some incredible high fantasy literature with a little Sci Fi as well. Then, Gearbox as the publisher to facilitate this aspiring looter. These are all good things. I'm excited.

there is nothing more to "see" because the PC platform is not looked at in the same light as the console side. Yes the games on both console and pc are multiplatform but they still retain their console exclusivity status until the game actually comes to another console. for example. SFV says right on the PS4 copy... PS4 Console Exclusive Game. It doesnt say that on the PC version. The same with Xbox one console versions of games like Quantum Break. It too says Xbox One Console Exclusive but not on the PC version.

Why? Because MS has one sp game and a 3rd party game featuring co op was shown for PS5 and PC?

Xbox currently has SP games and PS has multiplayer games, but it doesn't change what each specific company specializes in.

Perhaps Sony is looking to implement more mp/co op games and MS inherited a studio with a successful sp IP. Perhaps they'll both broaden their horizons a bit, but the script certainly is not flipped.

MS is still pushing Sea of Thieves, Gears, and Forza and leading the series X with Halo Infinite.

PlayStation is on the verge of releasing perhaps two of the best sp games this gen in TLoU II and Tsushima. The brilliant Death Stranding just released and God of War, HZD, and Spider-Man sequels are expected to be the biggest PS IPs this upcoming gen.

Alright the reflections - but I've never been blown away by reflections. I think particle effects like in God of War are much more... spellbinding... if you will. That small gif doesn't say much to me, and the trailer or whatever I linked says nothing to me at all.

The lighting and fog systems of KZSF and HZD are more impressive to me.

Look, I'm not trying to dump on anything, but I'm not impressed. I'm sure that PS5 graphics are going to look incredible - especially from first party studios, but this is whatever to me.

Nate Nadja comes across as a decent enough guy, but he's the comms manager over at Wushu, a studio made up of Ex Motorstorm / DriveClub devs that are currently rumoured to be working on a project for PlayStation 5 - it's in their best interests to build interest in the platform in order to sell their project in the future.

Worth noting that Nate has a background in PR not coding, that's his job at the studio, so anything he's saying is coming from the standpoint of an observer not someone actually working with next gen hardware, Don't get me wrong - I'm not putting PS5 (or Nate) down in any way - It's going to be very powerful, it's just important to put social media comments into perspective even when they come from a verified source.

Exactly. It's utter crap. I was impressed at first for xbox but then a few days later I realized there was no actual gameplay in anything microsoft has shown for their xbox while epic/gearbox and maybe sony (not sure) greenlit actual gameplay. If i were asked which one I would want to see I'd say it's the gameplay because that's something i can look forward to and has substance. Not some cutscene.

I also find it funny that Hellblade is the game the xbox fanboys are getting behind, most of them haven't even played it or thought it was trash when it came to ps4 first. All part of the plan, set the bar low only to blow it away with the first party reveal. I remember freaking out how good Infamous Second Son looked. Bluepoint is likely the batter this time. I would bet we get a Horizon 2 tease. On top of an enhancement video for God of War, Horizon ZD, Death Stranding, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima. If MS is
only releasing cross-gen games at launch there is no rush for Sony to blow the wad.

I'm excited for it. It's starts the first conversation of PS5 games especially since we know more details are coming in Spring. We know Console Launches tend to have obscure small titles to pad out the release, but I don't think Sony would partner with CounterPlay to bring this to PS5 if they didn't like what they saw.

Given that I've seen the snippet of gameplay and read this full interview, I can saw that these guys are looking to do something special. And this video dissecting a cinematic trailer and their talking points are... alarmist at worst and drivel at its best.

I thought it looked like a typical PC game running on the Unreal 4 engine. It looked a little rough but it's not final code. Does it look above what current gen can do? To be honest no, if developers didn't have to deal with the non pro versions of current consoles I could see them pulling this off at 1080P.
