Xbox's Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 Might Even Seduce PlayStation Diehards

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 stole the show the show at last night's The Game Awards - and not just because of how incredible the game looks.

I'm waiting to see what platforms these new Xbox games come to. Game Pass is their focus so maybe future TVs could run the games. I do have to say they bought Studios that are (and could be) making sequels to games on PS4, which is a douche way of getting people to buy their stuff.

Sony has such a library. I think that the next generation is going to be a good one for everyone.

No more weak hardware! Hellblade II definelly looks incredible and so far is the only REAL next gen game with unbeliable graphics.

Microsoft will definelly take their new acquired studios to the next level!

And yes, Hellblade II is just one of the games that most definelly is making the SX far more appealing and interesting than the OG Xbox One ever was!

There's really nothing genius about what happened at the VGA. It was a good reveal, and it's gotten people talking, but I think MS jumped the gun, because now when Sony does announce.something, theyll be able to come up with a comparable, or better showing, and the attention will.be right back on Sony.

I also question why when Spencer doesnt do anything for 4 years it's not a nightmare, but under mattrick it was a nightmare. Mattrick had the BS DRM and the other stuff to go along with it, but at least he had games lined up, and spencer is the one that cancelled some of those games.

I'm a diehard Playstation fan through and through. Doesn't mean I'm not open to other platforms and systems, hell i have a PC, 3ds, OGXBox, Wii, Wii U, and going to grabbing a switch when i get the cash. MS has just been the only one that never really offered something that i saw worth purchasing their console for since the original XBOX. But with these new studios, if they start churning out great games like their competitors i'll certainly jump on board. Small issue i see with that is it looks like i can just play their games on my PC for $2 a pop if they continue to have that gamepass deal everytime they release a big title.

Early 360 stuff was great, had a blast with King Kong, Crackdown(honestly one of my all time faves), Condemned criminal origins, Kameo always looked cool but never got to play it, Halo 3, Fable 2, Played gears 1-3 with a friend, but once the kinect came out things slowed way down and after playing those launch games, the same 3 ips every year just didn't seem worth the purchase of a several hundred dollar system. Also was just extremely lackluster compared to what the OGXbox offered in terms of exclusives with the likes of Sega backing them in that regard.360 just didn't have that same level of exclusive library the original xbox did, and that carried over to the xbox one.

Doesnt really have to seduce the diehard. I dont know if one game is enough to do that. HB was a good game, but sony has games on that level and higher in spades, while if someone who likes those kinds of games is buying a system, I feel MS still hasn't gotten the mind share of the consumer to expect those kinds of games.

As an allegory, MS is unlikely to get the otaku gamers because they just dont have enough of that kind of content. Their half hearted and quickly abandoned efforts to get those gamers in the past havent built that kind of expectation from them. Same is true here. More directly, if an insomniac game at the start of the gen couldn't attract the PS gamer, why would HB2 do it when the first sold less on PS than any Insomiac game did.

There may be a few people who pick up a XSX for it, but I doubt its significant enough to write home about.

Based on how Sony has been delivering games and had a very consistent gen, it is fair And understandable for anyone To be excited and interested in the PS5. Not to mention Sony studios are most likely working for PS5 games already. We might see what they are working on pretty soon. Here’s hoping for a proper console reveal in February

if you dig deeper into my comments you'll find i almost always mention waiting a year till i decide to buy in when it comes to the PS5, and the only thing that would really change that is having BC extend past the PS4. But i'm more excited about PS5 than Series X for a couple reasons:

1)Sony has proven more consistent with quality exclusives (i don't think anyone would argue MS had a dip in quantity from mid 360 era to now) and has continued that consistency for 4 generations
2)I also have a gaming PC so i will likely be able to play all of series x's "exclusives" without needing to own the system, and probably for $2 a pop like i've been doing as gamepass goes on sale for $2 everytime they drop a new big title. So you could say i'm VERY excited for what MS is going to bring in terms of games especially given their new acquisitions, but less so for the console itself given that caveat.

I would be as excited for switch but the system has already been out so it has turned from excitement to patiently waiting to have the funds to get one, and PC doesn't have generations like consoles so it never really stirs that much excitement in me, i just have it.

Sony only started to invest big money on first party development in PS3´s life circle. Been playing on Playstation consoles since the original japanese PS1 and I know for a fact that Sony used to rely on exclusive third party content.

It is real-time. Not gameplay but real-time in-engine graphics that are indicative of how the cutscenes in the game will look like. For a game that heavily relies on its story, narrative and character expressions that is quite important. It does, however, more so than anything else give us a glimpse on the level of visual fidelity we can expect from next-gen titles. Just imagine what the industry's more capable studios, including Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Guerilla, Insomniac, Rockstar, CD Projekt RED etc will be capable of delivering on the new hardware. In less than two months we will get to see some truly stunning looking titles from PlayStation.

Yes, it is still a target render at this point and most likely running on PC, but still it is indicative of what we can expect from the game. That does not however make it any less true.

The confusion lies with you two, if it were real time they would label as "Real-Time". In engine means it is using the game engine but is rendered out like a traditional 3D program to output a stable framerate and to apply more ideal effects like lighting, particles, animation quality, etc. Still comparable to real-time but not quite the same. Uncharted 1-3 does this with their cut scenes, and while the games do look nice, the cutscenes are not identical when it comes to what it looks like in real-time. Yes you'll still see some of those "flaws" because it's a game engine and not a dedicated 3D animation program like Blender or Maya and so doesn't have as many tools to smooth things over, but still isn't real-time. Don't believe me? Here's an actual game developer explaining just that.

I dont know if you consider yourself a "PlayStation Diehard" or not...but you know that even if you played the game via Gamepass on PC, that it would still be considered a seduction right? I mean...Microsoft is providing that option to all gamers with their eyes wide open haha...they want you to use these services and is making it super easy to do so regardless of what device you have. You dont have to buy the new console just to play it...you've already listed one option...Microsoft doesn't care how you go about it (as long as it isn't pirated haha), they just want you playing. I may be seduced to buy the game, but I certainly wouldnt buy a console because of one game. I kind of did that this gen with the x1, and it's been a disappointment.

But the conversation isn't about playing just any games on PC...we are talking about playing XGS games on PC...thats a big difference. Then theirs the fact that Microsoft owns the PC platform that you would need to have to play those XGS titles. Lets look at it this way...If I said to you..."or I could just get Sony's games on the PS Vita" and play them that way as an attempt to get around going through Sony...would you not look at it the same exact way? We aren't talking about publishers, we are talking XGS specifically. Microsoft has both a Windows 10 platform and Xbox console platform, as well as services for these platforms and beyond. They did that intentionally...to play any of their games on these platforms as a "PS Diehard" is what this article is talking about.

I dont really know whats this suppose to mean...but Microsoft is the one that has done the work in getting Xbox beyond the console and should get credit for that. In order to play XGS titles on PC, it means you are either doing so from the Microsoft Store, XGP for PC or Steam for Windows 10 which is Microsoft owned. You cant get it for Mac or Linux...its Microsoft or nothing...its Xbox or nothing. Even with using Steam, they are Xbox titles REQUIRING an Xbox account to play them.

Yes, but the article is about swaying PS gamers, by which I assume they mean swaying them to buy an Xbox. I can't imagine there are a relevant amount of PS gamers that would go through the trouble of building a PC just to play a MGS game or two or three. That'd be a huge waste of money IMO. But, there are a relevant number of PS gamers who also do game on PC, and for them, I can't see them going around saying they're Xbox or MS gamers because they happen to play a MGS game.

PS gamers aren't being seduced away any more than they might be for any other PC game, and making MS or Xbox some sort of paradigm of brilliance that they get extra credit because they somehow achieved such a feat seems pedantic and inflammatory to the console wars....thus, making them more stupid than they were before. There is nothing to really sway them. They either buy the game or they don't, and MS is just a game publisher/developer at that point.

I feel the same about those PS gamers who say they'll just buy it on PC as a way to discredit the Xbox or MS, so it's not just me picking on MS. People that are willing to play on PC just don't associate themselves as Xbox or MS gamers. They don't even associate as windows gamers. They either say they're PC gamers, or in some cases, Steam gamers.

It's like me buying a game from EA and saying I'm an Origin gamer. Or, I buy a game from Ubisoft and say I'm a UPlay gamer. It doesn't happen like that, because the platform is PC, not Xbox or MS, although a Windows gamer would be something people could classify as, just most people don't.

My point wasn't to try and discuss the things MS was trying to do, just that the contextual importance of such things to the console war are pretty irrelevant, and since the article is the one that made it about PS gamers, I feel that's worth saying why PC versions aren't really console war rhethoric....or at least shouldn't be.

What I see a lot of though, ever since MS started putting their games on PC, is that this is somehow a win for Xbox. Some people don't distinguish MS the console maker, from MS the game publisher, and a win for them is a win for all. While I do agree with that on face value, the way it's applied to the console wars is beyond silly, and makes what is already a roundabout discussion of spin and stupidity, into an even more roundabout discussion of spin and stupidity, where each side is trying to figure out ways to one up each other in the conversation, and when it comes to valid stupidity, neither side is really wrong. First off...I dont know the tone of the author of this piece and if it was to start a console war or not. I dont care about that. I dont care for the console war at all. However, the title of it is "Xbox's Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 Might Even Seduce PlayStation Diehards"...he doesn't mention that the box will seduce, but the game doing the seducing to PS Diehards specifically. I take this story to mean PS Diehards not being able to play it on their system so they are seduced to play it somewhere else thats not a PS haha. Since this game will be avalible to play on a number of platforms and services, I take that to mean whatever way the PS Diehards play it, it will be a seduction because it wouldn't be a PS. The author sticks to the GAME as being the thing here, not the box.

Furthermore...of course you/these "diehards" aren't going to consider themselves "Xbox gamers"...they are diehards after all haha...why would they. Thats why I responded to the guy above to let him know, that even though you may consider yourself a diehard, that anyway you attempt to play this game, would still mean that you fell for the seduction haha. I mean, I dont consider myself a "PC gamer", but Ive been playing quite a few games on my Surface Studio since buying it. Damn near all my hours in MCC: Reach have been logged in on PC and not console...Shenmue 3, Gears 5, Outer Worlds...its been all on PC. It's going to take way more than 1 game to do this. And I ADORED the first Hellblade. Easily one of the best games of 2017. Also, many will be able to just get the game via gamepass or even Xcloud. Negating the need for the new system. MS really has put themselves in an awkward position when it comes to hardware sales. It's interesting to see, because I see both positives and negatives out of it.

It makes you wonder if they will eventually plan to bring their games to other platforms en masse via these services eventually.

Well, Sony already made their move with MLB, so, who knows.

MLB The Show pays royalties to teams and players. Same with any real product in a game. Those cars and guns get permission to be put into the game and that permission nearly always costs them money, aside from sometimes being put into games as advertisement. This is far more likely to be due to negotiations with whom they pay royalties to requesting more platforms to increase revenue on their end and also the unlikelihood that a baseball game is a huge system seller to worry Sony about publishing it anywhere else.

I thought it was good, but what made it really interesting was the extra voices in her head and the different perspectives of reality. It was an ok adventure game with a good story, great graphics, and very innovative concept layered on top of it. Not sure a sequel will capture that same sense of innovation / uniqueness anymore.

The first one was such a chore to play. The voice acting and animation was great. The gameplay was crap, the first fight and the last fight pretty much happen the same way. There's no upgrades and you never feel like you grow or got stronger from start to finish.

I think the fact that when it was on PlayStation it was a new IP with a unique take and great presentation that had people clamoring for what it could be. This time those of us who have played the first one know to an extent what we’re getting into with round two, but with a bit more shine on it.

To be honest it seems like Ninja Theory tried genuinely hard to establish unique IP for Sony dating back to Heavenly Sword on PS3, and they pushed the hardware very well like they continue to show. However their games didn’t really find a strong audience or notable success, which led to them focusing on multiplat games and eventually being sold to MS.

I wish them well as I hate to see that level of talent dry up in an industry so in need of fresh ideas, but I do worry it will be a candy shell on a linear experience yet again in this case. I’m also dubious the XBox crowd will really dig their type of tales, since based on the trailer this will be even more of an uncomfortable mind twist than the first.

In short it’s a great start, but MS needs more than just more shiny to ever bring me back over. I want to see the hardware pan out and be reliable, prove it’s not just a DRM plagued, mandatory online only experience like they tried with the XBox One originally.

One game won’t convince me to dip $500 into the ecosystem just yet.

NT can make some really good games, but they had something special with the first game, and changing it up to become more of a mainstream game seems like it would cheapen the experience. It may still be a good game in it's own right, but it's going up against a cult classic masterpiece, and drastic change isnt going to please a lot of the fans, and may actually just reaffirm the notion that MS stifles creativity, even if its NT own idea.

I think the game is going to be more like the first though. Spencer said a couple years ago they wanted more intimate experiences for game pass, and I'd say that the first HB fell into that category.

I will admit, i definately am tempted by it. I loved the first one despite it's flaws, and yes i unfortunately have to agree it (Hellblade 2 likely not being on a Playstation platform) is a big FU to the playstation fans of the first game, but it is what it is.

BUT i definately ain't getting it on Xbox, maybe one day on PC but definately not on Xbox cuz (if we are going to use past generations and ESPECIALLY this gen as a reference), the quality game ecosystem is is almost at zero and it would be a better to invest those 400$-600$ i would spend on Xbox series X, into upgrading my PC rig. This is even before comparing it to Sony Playstation platform, where they both have then quantity and quality to offer.

Still again, while i have to call out NT on their past statements about AAA industry and publishers ,especially after the acqusition by Microsoft(tho that is probably my butthurt talking if anything else), i still wish them all the best.

Besides obvious reasons like ease-of-use/user-friendliness, exlcusives that have higher quality than the ones on PC (note quality NOT shovelware quantity) and ofc wanting to support industry innovative first party devs, there are a couple of others reasons(and this is based on my 18 years of experiance with consoles and PCs, and should not be regarded as a reflection of other peoples experiance even tho we do share similar points) ;
1)Most of my friends of family use a SONY console.
2) Gamesharing both pyhsical and digital games via hand/PSN. Sharing PS plus subscription (meaning i don't pay 50-60 $ a year for it, and even some years i don't even pay for it, meaning trully free digital games for me. And this was used even during PS3 era, waaay before PS plus was made mandatory for ONLINE gaming.
3)Prices on second hand market, especially if you have good contacts are often times the same or even better than the ones you find on PC side of things(yes including the ones you can find on sites like AllKeysShop. And then there is the second market itself, that i can use to sell my games.Also there is the factor of console pricing itself, both from real market and second hand market, that is cheaper than PC in the same league.

What about them?All of the acquired and founded SONYstudios started working on new game engines and IP-s (meaning those games were never available on other platforms in the first place), or if they did not have proper engines they would used allready available SONY ones, with the support of their budget, other trained enginneers and RnD teams from the likes of the quite legendary ICE team and SONY dev-kits. Which in most cases is quite different in what their comppettion is doing right now with Hellblade.
The only time in recent memory where acquired/ or more specifically HIRED a studio to ''isolate'' a former multiplat as an exclusive was with MGS4 back in 2008 and even that has valid reasons why it never came to other platforms after its PS3 release! That is it…now compare that with how many times Microsoft did that to turn those former mutliplats(like Hellblade) into consoles exclusives/ or exclusives themselves...it's a bullshit tactic that should not be supported by any publishers or developer.

Chanting in a strange tongue doesn't convince people. That magic doesn't work. You need to show game play. One title will not convince other players who experienced Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider Man, God of War 4 or Bloodborne.

Microsoft will be forced to compete with Horizon Zero 2, Spider Man 2, God of War 5, and Bloodborne 2. One title is not enough to move people when there is no game play visible.

I loved Hellblade alot, but it's going to take alot more than that for me drop potentially £500+ to access it on a platform who dropped the ball the entire previous generation.

Wouldn't the best solution (similarly to this gen) be to buy a Playstation and a PC if you're looking into buying multiple platforms? All the convenience of a console and Sony exclusives on PS5 combined with access to Xbox games via steam/game pass and games without console ports on PC.

Crazy to see just how much the Xbox hype machine is spinning the importance of this sequel. The original barely registered a blip on Xbox yet it is being hyped as if it as big a deal as a more mainstream, AAA blockbuster.

The developer is a quality outfit and I am sure the game will be great, but to try and suggest that this game is on the same level (in respect of anticipation) as a Gears of War or Halo etc is nonsense; let alone if Sony launch with a sequel to Horizon, Spiderman or God of War etc. Most gamers have never played Hellblade and will not care about this sequel as a result. The only people who will end up knowing about Hellblade 2 are those who are really into their games and who played the 1st game...... So just over a million people in total (mostly PC gamers). I just don't see PlayStation fans jumping ship based on one game, regardless of how good it turns out to be.

The game looks very promising but for the intended target audience (who are generally adults), if they're interested to play this game, they're more likely to either buy both next-gen consoles or simply get it on PC while owning a PS5. rather than choosing between Xbox Series X or PS5.
