When the next gen does release from both Microsoft and Sony then you can compare the switch.

XBSX... It is simple and functional. Only as wide and deep as a controller and not the size as a PC case. PS5 Dev kit is just.... seriously godawful.

I agree with your size assessment. Plus it looks about 2 disc slots tall. So it's approximately 9" tall by 6" wide and deep so 6"x 6"x 9" approximately. That's not very big and should fit well in most TV stands.

@vikingland1 - I think you are a slight bit off on the dimensions. Xbox One controller is basically about 6" wide I would put the XBSX at approx 6.5" wide and deep. I would put it at just slightly over 3 controllers in height. Xbox One controller is 4.25" height. So I would put the XBSX right at about 13" in height. So 6.5" x 6.5" x 13" is closer to the dimensions with my quick estimated calculations.

It really is close to about the same size as a shoe box. (but not quite as wide)

I'm more worried about MS grand idea to create multiple varieties with lower specs that could hold back innovation in some games. At the end of the day, it's all about games.

Think maybe about an standard PC graphics card inserted in a PCB, with a big colector in the middle of the box to collect so much heat to the top. No horizontal position for this, I supose.

It's designed to push all the air out in one go, with a single large fan. Whether it's vertical or horizontal, so long as the heat collection area stays clear, the fan should blow it out. Quite a few smaller PC cases are designed with this in mind, and work fine using a sideways airflow.

If I were to have a concern, it would be that in horizontal use, the majority of the heat would be pushed out the side, instead of the back, unless you turned the vents towards the back, which would make the CD slow less accessible, and possibly show the wires more....making the form and function idea go just to function. I personally would prefer the heat be pushed out the back of my entertainment center, but understand that's just a matter of how mine is set up. This thing wouldn't fit in the vertical position in my entertainment center at all.

Not that I have a concern about the heat, just that's how I'd look at it if I were thinking about it.

Yeah, it is starting to make sense. X has been gaining popularity as their power moniker lately. Moving forward, this will probably be referred to simply as the X series like you described.

You can easily introduce an S series, a Lite series, etc. If they could have named it just "Xbox," I think people would understand their goal here a little more clearly. Their past naming issues kind of prevented that though.

It also brings with it a sense of sophistication. Xbox Series _____ doesn't sound like a toy. It sounds like a piece of tech, or phone, or car. All of which are consumer products that we've easily learned to identify the various models and iterations in.

It's definitely new for consoles, but it makes sense. The name taps into consumer Psyche and how we view new products as superior with certain monikers. iPhone 11 PRO, "Black Series" in high end cars, X in Xbox One X as the superior console. Every smart brand knows that using these types of buzzwords are something that consumers hang off of and allow them to differentiate "Best from the rest".

However, I do think the name is almost a little clunky but I like the acronym XSX!

It's a pretty uninspired name, and I'm wondering what the talk was all about that the name would somehow encapsulate the capabilities of the system. This just feels like they used check and replace to swap "one" for "series", and it makes no real logical sense in terms of progression. Not that Xbox One did, but at least the "one" had something to do with their vision.

So, as of now, I'm wondering if there is more to the "Series" that they haven't revealed yet.

It's overload for me considering I'll be buying this alongside the PS5. Hellblade 2 is such a sweetener and looks to be a launch title.

Finally something gritty and serious from a Microsoft studio that isn't boring ol' Gears. So happy to see Ninja Theory working on this because I really wanted a Hellblade 2 and Bleeding Edge is just cringe to me.

Hopefully Microsoft's studios will be pursuing more mature themes and start trying to rival Sony's games in both visual fidelity and originality.

Sony is known for monolith designs of their consoles. And this looks to capture that feeling of something towering over something. "One above all" type of thing. Can't hate them for trying.

It's the same thing as what they copied this Gen from last Gen. Sony did the "it only does everything." And Microsoft this Gen did the "all in one" console. Which is the same with 360. Microsoft wanted to capture that PS2 market and replace it.

Should be an interesting battle. All I'm going to say is that games are going to look great either way. I hope physics leads the charge instead of just looks. I've had enough of just looks.

I don't think it's really that big. For people that set their consoles between the bottom of the TV and the surface it's sitting on it might have to move, but you could always put it on the floor. I have an adjustable rack so wouldn't be a problem.

WIndows 10 name was to avoid compatibility issues with windows 95-98 software. There was this sloppy way of locking software to a specific operating system....which still exists through the 7 and 8 versions...that just uses the first number of the version to say if it can work, or be installed. You can do that with win10 programs, as it uses a different way to check the system number.

I think the console looks cool already got a spot set aside for it. We don't know what cooling solutions each console is adapting but the hardware is the same on both systems far as I've read. If i was a betting man my money would be on something quite similar from sony.

I find the wording and grammar used by Xbox on the Series X website incredibly interesting with respect to the ongoing next gen power narrative between PlayStation and Xbox.

There seems to be particlular emphasis placed on the use of the Period in making a declarative statement. Of course the descriptor could be referencing the Series X's hierarchal position within the Xbox ecosystem but I think if this was the case a simple sentence would have been used along the lines of "Our fastest most powerful Xbox console" as they have done with this generations X model.

In light of the recent leaks by Windows Central specifying a 12TF performance target for the high end Scarlett model, I'm willing to bet that the Series X will be the most powerful next gen console. This also ties in with Phil Spencers comments regarding not being out of position on power or price. I think we all assumed Spencer was talking about a single machine, I now believe he was actually talking about Series X and what we understand the less expensive, lower spec Lockhart model to be.

They're trying to be misleading without breaking any rules around false advertising - as they do with their '4K' logos.

The Fastest and Most Powerful are simply referring to it being their fastest and most powerful Xbox - not 'console out there' like they were pushing with the X. Obviously, if the PS5 specs are lower (which I doubt they will be), then they'll be sure to add that narrative back in there moving forward.

There's really no way that MS can guarantee the most powerful system without knowing what Sony will bring. While MS will have a pretty good idea of what Sony will offer, as they have smart people that can figure it out, It doesn't mean that they can tell 100% what Sony will offer. Maybe if they had some insider information, but that kind of thing is pretty unethical.

MS can say most powerful as much as they want right now, because technically, they're the only one that have made a claim of power.

It may be unethical, but this is business and as was quite correctly pointed out at the Game Awards - a business that is now worth more than any other in the entertainment industry - a business that decides the future of entire gaming divisions and the employees that work for them. The information could have come from anywhere, something as simple as a visit to a studio and a question about the target specs of a particular dev kit for example.

I think they both probably have a good idea what the other will offer. Probably not specifics, but enough to make a good guess. But, if they come out at the same time, they'll both start sourcing at the same time, so looking at 3rd party sources to see what the company is starting to order, so they're both be making guesses to what the others will do. In the end, they're going to make decisions based on what they can do based on business decisions, and hope it works out for the best.

When I said unethical, I meant that if they were being supplied information by someone, it'd be a pretty big breach of privileged information. It's illegal for both the company receiving it, and illegal for the company giving it. I don't think that's the case here though, and I don't mean to imply that anyone is doing something wrong, just that right now to have specifics, that's likely the only way they'd get the info.

Specific target specs aren't out for the devs yet. They're given information about the class of hardware to expect, as well as any specific hardware that may be available. That stuff isn't something that the other company can just throw together and slap into their current design this late in the game. Specific specs probably won't come until actual sourcing starts, because as it stands now, there is probably still some room to adjust a bit.

First, I can't say for sure what either company knows about the other. Second, I said that MS can't know they will always have the most powerful console, because it's an impossible task. At best, they can say they hope to, and they can market it how they want, but run the risk of being wrong.

It's not the end of the world if they're wrong, just the way business is done, and they both make their systems with a target, which will be based on available hardware, aimed at a price point, and they can make reasonable assumptions about how that will be able to compete beause the competition will have the same tech available to them. If they're both aiming for the same price points, hardware is probably going to be relatively close to one another......Kinect inclusion type scenarios not withstanding.

As far as Sony being less powerful because they haven't said anything.....I think you got things mixed up. MS is the one scrambling to match Sony's own reveals so far. Not the other way around. Sony is playing MS now, to the point that they went ahead and revealed their next gen console at the VGA's. Even the community is playing MS, to the point that they have to go and start talking about next gen as soon as they release their mid-gen...because people doubt MS long term intent so much that they think MS could leave the market.

MS is the reactionary one to everything that's going on. Sony is going at it's own pace. They may be adjusting right now, but Sony knows more about MS plans than MS knows about Sony's right now it seems. Sony will say what they have when they're ready, not because MS suddenly dominates the narrative of next gen...like Sony has done since they first talked about PS5's SSD drive.

im not a fan of the design but it is sturdy looking. the name surely is confusing, from a marketing perspective anyways, lets hope for good exclusives. im not sure if it was a good idea to reveal it already but it was a surprise, ill give them that.

Think Microsoft's naming convention leaves alot to be desired, it's far too similar to the One X which I presume will still be sold (and probably be the console of choice for most looking for an Xbox).

but the power in it is what really counts and apparently its very beast, i really dont think sony are going to be able make anything as powerful in a smaller footprint.

While the design may have it's problems (in terms of fitting into people's entertainment centers) I think they've chosen it so that they can get a big heatsink and axial fan in there. This would certainly outweigh the disadvantages imo, because it'll make the console run cooler and quieter. This is speculation of course. An improved cooling solution will also make higher clockspeeds possible.

The name is weird, but that's what I've come to expect from Microsoft consoles. I woke up today and already forgot the name of the system. I also think it might make some people think it's another version of the One X (similar to how the Wii U confused some people).

Horizontally it's about 6" high, or the same as the width of a controller, whatever that is. Personally I've never encountered an entertainment center with less than 6" of space between shelves.

I think the console looks slick. Yes it looks like a pc tower, but a refined, non-intrusive and minimalistic one. I'd be happy to have one next to my TV. Specs are dope as well, I'm really excited to see Sony's answer to this. It's going to be a beautiful next-gen console war.

By the way; people here saying the PS5 dev kit looks better than this?!?!? Damn, looks like you've got a bad taste in design, even if that's subjective.

It looks like 2 Gamecubes stacked. I am okay with that. My OG PS4 sounds like an airplane taking off sometimes, where as my X1X is almost completely silent as well as the Switch. Let's hope PS5 and Nextbox are quiet.

I quite like the look of it, and if I'm honest I think my ps4 just looks like an over sized door wedge, and a loud one at that.
Although the ps4 could also be used as aeroplane chocks as well and as an added bonus you might struggle to here the ps4 running over the noise of the plane PMSL.

One thing I like about the XBSX, is that you're going to be able to play all of your XBOX catalog on the new system. For people like me that has huge collection original Xbox and 360 games, that's a huge selling point (again) for people like me.

I hope Sony does the same thing with the PS5, because my collection for the PS2, PS3, and PS4 is beyond ridiculous.

I actually like the Design and I think it stands out compared to previous consoles. What’s more important is what’s under the hood which I think we can all agree on. PS4 and especially the Pro were ugly consoles to me but that didn’t stop Sony from selling a ton of them. It will sit well next to my 65 inch curved Samsung.

I would have preferred something similar to the S or X as MS outdid themselves on those designs, but I like it. Looks are not really what I buy consoles for, so if it performs, that is ultimately what I am concerned with. Great job Phil, and being able to play 3 generations plus the next gen Xbox games on one platform, makes the X Series a no brainer for me. Can't wait..

It's design is literally the One X in tower form. There's definitely gonna be another type. Series S? With a traditional look and price although weaker. I'm starting to understand it. I think it will have another name. This is just the X version of it. Like the one X is the X series of Xbox One.

Its minimalistic design and the fact it looks like a connected gizmo put out by Amazon may earn it some praise by some, but if there are really 2 next-gen Xbox systems (Xbox series X and Xbox series S?), it's going to be the Xbox One X all over again, with the high-end version not able to show what it can do, as the games will also have to function on the lower-end version. I heard some rumors of 12 TFLOPS for the former and 4 TFLOPS for the latter, if true it doesn't make any sense to me, how could there be so much disparity between them, with the next-gen low-end version being even less powerful than the current-gen high-end version ...?
