Final Fantasy VII Remake Confirmed to be Exclusive on PS4 Until March 3, 2021

Ever since Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Remake we knew that it would be exclusive to PlayStation 4 for a certain amount of time, we just didn’t know how long. Well thanks to updated box art we now know just how long it will be.

Considering the vast majority of modern FF titles are hitting XGP...a lot of gamers have the opportunity to play this series on an Xbox console without shelling out money for each individual game. By the time it hits Xbox, these same gamers might be ready for it.

@Colbert I could play Final Fantasy on Nintendi platforms if it was an option I played 1-6 on SNES. Final Fantasy doesn't have a long history with Xbox. And pretty much 7 thru 14 debuted on Playstation. So if I had a CHOICE an unbiased decision I will always purchase Final Fantasy on Playstation. I'll always purchase GTA, FF, DMC, and KH on Playstation. Always.

There's games I'll ALWAYS purchase on Xbox. CoD, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls (they always seem to perform better on Xbox). Its not that I'm preferring one console over another. It's like The Last of Us 2 launching on Xbox same day as the PS4 version.... I mean I could BUT WHY WOULD I?

Personally, I pick a platform based on controller preference. I prefer offset sticks so my choice to play certain multiplat games is going to be xbox. Controller preference is also brand loyalty. I know there are 3rd party controllers for PS that offer offset sticks but the stigma of 3rd party controllers lingers with practically everyone. 1st party is what majority of people use because it comes with every system but there are a few 3rd party ones that arent to bad. Granted I still always come back to 1st party.

I gotta be honest, I cringe at this response. I played Planescape and tons of games on PC first, but I love them on new devices. And with next year SE releasing a slew of FF games on GamePass and on the console itself, it would be the same as playing it on PSOne or PS4 or whatever. I mean, by your logic, why would we play FFVII anywhere but on PSOne? So, don't buy the remaster (not remake) on PS4?

I'm skeptical this is official box art. When, in all the history of timed exclusives, has the date to play it on other platforms ever once been listed? "Play it first", yeah, we see that in the marketing, but printed on the box with a date? You think Sony paid to get this timed exclusive just to allow that right on the box?

All that coupled with a new graphic which doesn't even look official? Have you ever once known Sony to have all four symbols displayed in one color? I know this is a Square Enix thing, but Sony is pretty damn particular about how you display their logos on the boxes for PS games. It's part of their branding. March 3, 2021 is also a Wednesday. Unless things change next gen, Games release on Tuesday or Fridays.

I don't doubt this game is multi-plat, but for now, I'm calling fake on this image. I'm no expert on analyzing to see if graphics are fake, but too much just stands out as wrong on this image.

It's been a thing since gaming on consoles became a 3 platform thing. MS did it alot through out the XB360 era, Sony did it during the PS1 and PS2 era, and they're doing it again. All things considered... It makes sense, PSOne was the home of FF7 for a long time. Only makes sense to capitalize on those that experienced it so many years ago on PS4.

And being upfront about it is a nice habit I want to see other publishers get into.

MS was pressured into saying that Rise of the Tomb Raider was coming a year later to other platforms because Phil said first on Xbox.

This cuts the mystery and keeps the language fair for everyone. We know now it's exclusive to PlayStation for a year after initial release. We don't have to guess. And make a big stink and pressure execs to talk.

At the end of the day, I don't care, PS gets a game, I get to play it and enjoy and because it's exclusive, it gets the spotlight as a marquee title driving sales and more chances at Sony spending money to secure premier experiences for PS gamers.

Sony didnt start this during the PS1 or PS2 era. They were only competing with Nintendo and sega (but sega was going down hill already). During that time, most developers went exclusively for PS1 because PS1 format was discs and not cartridge. This was why the original FFVII was released only on the PS1.

How many people own PS4 and PC and would have bought it on PC if it just came to PC? How many own both PS4 and XBO? Where is the largest audience of potential users.

I get your intention, but those big numbers just that, big numbers. Not actual potential market.

They went with the safe bet, as well as the most popular non-Nintendo console in Asia and Europe.

I'm all for releasing to everyone. But, this stuff exists. It's just not as bad as those big numbers we throw around. It's bad, just no way as bad as those numbers considering even the best selling third-party games on every platform combined never sell as many as the lowest selling console has market reach (and that's ignoring that people buy multiple copies on multiple platforms all the time).

Sony seems to have some kind of marketing deal going. They may not have written a check, but a marketing deal where they spend so many millions of dollars promoting it is essentially the same...although in such cases, they dont tend to stay on one platform indefinitely. Cod and destiny were marketing deals for instance, but sony only gets the timed exclusivity.

I doubt sony would allow a date for it going to other platforms to be printed on the box though, and among other questionable aspects of this image, I'm going to assume this is fake.

That said, it is multiplat, but where and when it will go to other platforms is anyone's guess, and any assumption or guess is just that.

Even in western countries, final fantasy has sold better on ps consoles when released the same day with an xbox version. Of course, there are really only two examples of that instance....13 and 15....but I suspect the same would be true here. Larger fan base and install base makes that a pretty easy prediction. Would probably sell well enough on xbox though.

An xbox release is pretty likely. If it's a year out, I'd say it may only release on next gen, but never know. PC is a given. Square has been pretty good at supporting it. I doubt itll be day one on xbox/pc on game pass like I've seen someone try to say it would be. Square would want to test the waters I think.

I have no doubt itll receive a ps5 port. A cross gen patch would be better for those buying it in a few months. I dont tend to split hairs on the meaning of exclusive though. Like I rarely consider PC, even though it's a favorite go to for ps fans. I also dont really think of cross gen on the same company platform as not being exclusive.

Mostly, it seems some people are really just trying to curb the sales of the sales of the game on ps4, which is dumb considering how many people are looking forward to the game, and them touting some moral victory they can eventually play it won't change other peoples excitement.

We always knew such a huge project wasn't being developped solely with the PS4 in mind. Of course PC and Xbox One will get it at some point later. But it's crazy to see the number of "fake" exclusives this gen, including on the PS4. Seems to me the PS3 had way more exclusives. And also the PS2. And the PS1.

Technically PS5 is another platform, in relation to PS4, unless the publisher expressly states it's coming to ecosystems outside of PlayStation we can't assume Xbox, PC or Nintendo platforms are getting this.

I'll probably get it first on PS4 and later on Xbox when it's on sale. Only because I expect (hope?) that 20 years from now, the newest Xbox will still be able to play it, whereas I'd probably have to dig out an older system (assuming I haven't sold it) if I only had it on PS4.

The only PlayStation home console which has caused issues with BC is PS3, but it's possible PS5 is getting emulation software or built in hardware features that mean it will run every PS console game.

Future generations will then be able to easily run those games with iterative versions of that tech.

PS3 wasn't backwards compatible outside of the launch models. PS4 wasn't backwards compatible at all. So out of 4 consoles (not counting PS1 obviously) only 2 really supported backwards compatibility. And Sony's business stance hasn't indicated that they'll always support it going forward.

You need to read my comment again, I said the only console to cause BC issues was PS3, because it used the cell architecture, PS4 was coming after that and used X86 architecture, which has no issues running PS1 or PS2 games when they're simply ported over.

With PS5 Sony has actually been outright stating they want to support the library of the past.
Considering bedroom coders have been able to write PS3 emulation software to run on PC, PS5 will have a very powerful CPU, GPU, all of the accompanying hardware needed, along with Sony having all of the base code needed to write a virtual machine based emulator to run any software from the past generations of PlayStation consoles.

Interesting. I remember the backlash when MS bought 1 year of exclusivity of Tomb Raider and how bad that was. But this is N4G, so nobody will care around here. People will use some excuse like Final Fantasy started on Playstation (which is didn't) or it belongs there (which it doesn't).

Good for PS4 owners, sucks for people who don't have a PS4 and want to play this game. I will still get it day one as it's one of my favorite FF games.

Hell yes! Ok anyone who's held off now is the time to get a PS4. For those of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's are pretty familiar with exclusives, whether first, second, third or even timed. This isn't exclusive to Sony, EVERYONE has done this.

Also for those crying you realize a lot of us were on here when Rise of the Tomb Raider launched as a timed exclusive on Xbox (just to give M$ something to try to compete with Uncharted 4, instead of you know developing their own) we didn't see y'all crying then. Not really. It was considered a huge game back in the day, but not so much nowadays. The foundation was already laid for FF7. It's not like they needed years to conceptualize characters, dialogue and locations. They, literally, only have to remake assets and re-record dialogue. I know there's more to it than that, but you get the point. It shouldn't have taken as long as it has. And the fact that it's coming out in chapters is a slap in the face to fans. A straight up cash grab.
