Halo Infinite’s multiplayer creative director leaves 343 Industries as game's future gets murkier

Only a month after Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty spoke on Halo Infinite’s lackluster live service updates and of restructuring coming to developer 343 Industries, another senior figure has departed the company.

Today, Tom French announced that he would be stepping away as multiplayer creative director on Halo Infinite, pulling the curtains on a career developing Halo titles that spanned more than 11 years.

Lol. 343 needs to shut down and mcsft needs to get a QUALITY new studio to work on halo.

Orchard502d ago

Agreed. I'd love to see them have iD software make a Halo entry.

-Foxtrot502d ago (Edited 502d ago )

Honestly they’ve kind of tainted Halo too much

I’d rather they start fresh and do a reboot

It would be a good way of bringing people back

I loved the story in these games but Halo 5 onward has screwed thongs up too much, like what they did to Cortana then bringing in “not-Cortana” to replace her to fix their mistake…yeesh

Doesn’t help aswell that their stories were done in a way where they think you’ve read all the novels for the lore. “Oh don’t understand plot point A and B well it was talked about on novel X and Y”.

LoveSpuds502d ago (Edited 502d ago )

MS need to quit Halo and move on, they have stagnated for the last 13 years or so. Make some new damn games!!!

Crows90502d ago (Edited 502d ago )

They won't. They're too buys buying up devs to continue making their IPs. And they've already made it clear that they will leave everything up to each dev. In other words they won't really have anything to do with the new games from their newly purchased studios. Which is a good thing since they kinda kill studio creativity whenever they get involved.

crazyCoconuts501d ago

You're so cruel. What would all those singing monks do for work?

Lightning77502d ago

Agreed. Take the old dog in the back and well... Yeah...

DarXyde502d ago

I don't know if that's a fair assessment.

I have no horse in this race, but it makes me think of my own thoughts about Guerilla. I never cared for Killzone, but I love Horizon.

It's entirely possible that they're just not playing to their strengths (which, as a studio, perhaps they haven't found it yet).

LucasRuinedChildhood501d ago

It's not exactly comparable but I do agree that 343 might be better suited to making something else.

Guerilla had not failed as 343 have though. Killzone 2 is deservedly one of the highest rated FPS games of all time and 3 was also very good. They are beloved games. Shadowfall was the only time they messed up a bit and it was rushed for the PS4 launch.

Hofstaderman501d ago (Edited 501d ago )

I agree with you. Killzone for me never reached the heights of Halo 2,3 and Reach. But now Halo feels like a poor man’s Halo. Go figure

neutralgamer1992501d ago

Real question is if Activision acquisition goes through does Ms care about halo once they have COD and Doom

They've lost an incredibly concerning amount of leads and senior level staff since Infinite launched. The game also isn't performing well. It is the 18th most played game on Xbox and the game peaked at 5000 players on Steam today. At this point, MS should end support for the game at the end of 2023 and just reboot the franchise. Halo seriously needs a GOW 2018 type reboot.

anast502d ago

Shouldn't have been hired in the first place.

badz149501d ago

The team was formed specifically to make only Halo games after Bungie left. They failed the ONE task they are made to do. How incompetent can one group of people be?

anast501d ago

My point. This kind of failure is shocking. Nepotism and stale reputations were the hiring requirements.

Star51502d ago

343...is toast. I don't forsee a bounceback for them in general

Zeref501d ago

Halo Infinite is still in the top played games on Xbox live, above Destiny 2 😂

Ubisoft shuts down servers for over 90 legacy games

Ubisoft is flipping the off switch on the servers for over 90 of their legacy games that were released as recently as the PS4 and Xbox One era, but as long ago as the PS2.

coolbeans722d ago (Edited 722d ago )

That genuinely sucks (for Vegas 1).

jmc8888722d ago

Casino, one of the G.O.A.T.'s

Loved the trigger to hug wall, then pop out and shoot mechanic. Bummed that never came to Siege.

neutralgamer1992722d ago

They're about to be acquired it seems

GamesAsAService722d ago

That is my thought as well.

Was there an accompanying announcement to go along with this move?

neutralgamer1992722d ago

i think it's only a matter of time. They have studios in some of the most expensive cities in the world so their expenses are more than others

watch the first video and 2nd is the latest

ABizzel1722d ago

Hmmm.... it's possible, but this seems more like cost-cutting, and I'm shocked some of these servers were still up. I know they're open for a potential buyer, but there aren't many buyer's within the industry that would be able to buy them out, only potential mergers (since MS is locked-up with the Activision buyout), excluding Facebook, Amazon, Google, etc...

neutralgamer1992722d ago

ab

why couldn't comeone buy them? they are worth only 5 billion(by only i mean to these huge companies)

i can see them going for 7-8 billion and at that range a lot of big players could acquire them

DOMination-721d ago

I think this story will carry on picking up steam over the coming weeks and months. It was heavily rumoured a few days ago that a couple of private investment companies were in talks to buy them,

ABizzel1721d ago (Edited 721d ago )

@neutralgamer1992

It's more than just buying them at $7 - $10 billion which instantly knocks the competition down to 6 companies (MS, Tencent, Sony, Nintendo, EA, Take-Two, a few other ones, but they're mobile / Chinese only / Korean only publishers) who would be likely to buy them within the industry (which are the same ones I meant when I said "there aren't many buyer's within the industry the would be able to buy them out"). On top of the buyout, Ubisoft has over 20,000 employees who will have to be added to payroll each year, as well as, providing tens - hundreds of millions on producing their IPs, and millions on traditional operation cost like studio space in some of the most expensive cities in the world. Even if they cut 1/4 of the staff down to 15,000 and moved the ctusiods to less expensive areas and group more teams together, that's still a annual overall operations budget of likely $1 - 2 billion to keep them running (15k employees * $60k average salary).

That's why most companies within the industry couldn't afford them, and once you add Facebook, Amazon, Google, etc... into the mix there is no company within the industry with more money to outbid them with Microsoft tied up with the Activision deal.

That leaves the industry with few options unless those tech companies don't see the value in Ubisoft which is extremely unlikely with Google still trying to do gaming, Facebook/Meta diving full force into Oculus VR (the most likely to buy them), Apple's always looming, and even Amazon and Netflix trying to get into gaming.

1. A merger of brands like Namco-Bandai did would allow them to keep their legacy and still function on their own If the shareholders actually believe in the company instead of being in it for money only. I can see an EA-Ubisoft and maybe a Take-Two / Ubisoft.

2. They continue to function as an independent company with exclusive ties to a larger brand like Sony did with Bungie and like MS is stating they will with Activision.

Otherwise, it's off to the highest bidder, and Facebook/Meta needs developers and development engines to get Oculus VR mainstream and in every home, and with 15,000 - 20,000 employees who have experience running a gaming company being up for buy, they're putting in top dollar.

Microsoft is tied up with the Activision deal
Tencent is possible as they want to buy up as many devs as possible
Sony is better off with Capcom / Warner / AAA individual developers
Nintendo is possible I just don't see them pulling the trigger
Take-Two makes sense
EA is by far the most likely buyer

The issue is none of those companies can outbid Facebook, Amazon, Google, or even Netflix possibly except Microsoft. Those companies can buy Ubisoft out at 3x their value, and at that bid it instantly

mkis007722d ago

There was a rumor that sony has an aquisition bigger than a theoretical purchase of kojima productions. Maybe this is it. Can't be Microsoft until they finish activision. It would be too big and would probably torpedo one.

neutralgamer1992722d ago

i still think that's square enix

anast722d ago

Ubisoft sucked everyone dry and now that they are finished, they are leaving. Probably going to make cell phone games from here on out.

XxINFERNUSxX722d ago

Most you can just torrent so easily for PC and play single player. The others like Wii U, 360, PS3 you can torrent the roms and get emulators and it will play and look better on the PC. And when you have them you can keep them forever 😊

jeromeface722d ago

yea, piracy is soooo cool.... /s

ufo8mycat722d ago

If the developers aren't willing to put in effort and creativity into their games and don't put enough quality content in them to warrant the price tag, your damn right piracy is cool. These developers/games don't deserve support

IanTH722d ago (Edited 722d ago )

@ufo8mycat

That argument doesn't hold water to me. If they don't put effort or creativity or enough content into the game, then no one should want to play it, right? Plenty don't deserve support, in which case don't support them with a purchase. But you also don't deserve a free game for no reason.

And again, why even waste your time pirating & then PLAYING this content poor, creatively moribund, low effort game anyway?

MasterChief3624722d ago

I don't think this is about delisting games. I think it's about online services including stat tracking for your uPlay account when playing those games, and anything connected to uPlay.
