Wii gathering dust? Not so, says Nielsen survey

A new survey from the renown consumer tracking firm Nielsen found Wii usage is actually relatively healthy compared to other consoles.

Anyone who's visited an Internet forum, read a blog, or visited a news site like GamePro has seen it at least once. "My Wii," someone will say, "is gathering dust."

It's an Internet meme that's had considerable legs, starting pretty much when the Wii launched in 2006, and lasting to the present. The funny thing is that for a majority of Wii owners today, it isn't true.

In fact, new research out of the Nielsen Group today revealed that the Wii is actually a system that's played pretty consistently every month out of the year.

"According to the chart, from September 2007 through August 2008, the average Wii was played, on average, five and six days per month for roughly 50 minutes at a time. The numbers remained consistent throughout the year."

Unless this is a typo, that means that the average Wii get's played once or twice a week for an hour. My 360 and PS3 are brimming with games and get all the love I can give them. Between life, working out and the missus, that comes to about 2-3 hours a day, 6 days a week.

Don't really understand the spin on this article. Something getting used once or so a week is pretty much gathering dust. Turn it on, wave hands around, turn it off. Yeah, Americans are really enjoying their Wiis and the depth of quality software is truly keeping them glued to their seats.

For an hour or two each week.

cheers,
-C

well not everyone is as "hardcore" as you...
You are so awesome .............................. .....*explodes*.

I think they are looking from the "casual" perspective.
Apparently to his logic 50 minutes is a normal " game time ".

I guess he asked the wrong people.
But i games on the Wii longer than 50 minutes.
SH/tloads more( and my PS3 course).

Not really getting what he is really trying to push though.

:\ I don't have 2 hours a day anymore. I've been job searching, boss just gave me 5 months notice. Should be enough time to find one.:)

It's just an average...which means there are people who play way more than 50 minutes a week or whatever and people who play less. Considering that the Wii to other console ratio is something like 3:1, that's probably in the healthy range.

Okay.. thats you. You probably don't do much other than games. Some people have work, school, homework, sports, activities, etc.

i used to play for like 5 hours a day.. now i have no time.. but i definitly play it more then 2 hours a week..

I'm a hardcore gamer with little time.. but i try.. if i'm not playing my WII cause i'm on the go, then i'm playing my PSP during a commute. I'm always gaming in my spare time.. just sometimes my spare time is not in front of a Tv

Well some dust falls off when you have to put paper under it so that it has something to do, so he is right it doesnt gather dust it just maintains the dust it does have.
