I Feel Like I’m Already Using PS5 And Xbox Scarlett’s Most Exciting Feature

Forbes: “I worried that I might get smug as I began my transition to playing games primarily on PC, and it is, indeed, a constant battle. But using an SSD makes me feel like I've already got PS5 and Xbox Scarlett's best feature.”

Nyxus1613d ago

Their best feature will be the games.

UltraNova1613d ago

..and those games will be played locally, latency free and uncompressed! Joy!

UltraNova1613d ago

@captain

Upset for what, being able to play locally with the aid of a super fast SSD further reducing latency?

At least I added to Nyxus's comment, what did you add other than showing your sensitivity when I comment?

fiveby91612d ago

I think there is more to it than just running an SSD in the existing systems to say you're running that feature. Likely faster bus speeds ( PCIe versus SATA ) & prefetch cache which are not available to storage on current consoles. An NVMe drive in a pc is considerably faster than a regular SATA3 based SSD.

FPS_D3TH1612d ago

Undoubtedly the best optimization available as well

Was going to say this but you nailed it.

Bleucrunch1612d ago

how are folks disagreeing with your post? It's the right answer.

starchild1612d ago

Yeah, but PC has those too.

Soulrakk1612d ago

ding ding ding... Tell them what they won, Johnny!

zodiac9091612d ago

WHO are the morons that Disagreed with your statement?! It ALWAYS has been about the games, no matter the hardware.

UltraNova1612d ago

Those who worship corporations and their plans for robbing us of any ownership. The same people who play services, not games.

Congratulations, doesn't make them any less beneficial for the next generation of consoles.

Fishy Fingers1613d ago

Hopefully when they say SSDs they'll actually use m.2 as I saw a bigger improvement moving from SSD than I did HDD to SSD.

Pricey1613d ago

You need to get your eyes checked then

Fishy Fingers1613d ago

Eyes? Do you know what hard drives do? M.2 has much better read/write speeds

UltraNova1612d ago

Fishy,

Well, Sony at least did claim they'll equip the ps5 with the worlds fastest SSD so I guess its safe to assume that it will be a custom M.2 variant.

1612d ago
Giblet_Head1613d ago

Ha. Not at their current price point.

SegaGamer1612d ago (Edited 1612d ago )

@Fishy Fingers
That is complete nonsense. The difference between an M.2 and SSD in loading times is a second or two. The difference between an SSD and HDD is anything between 20 seconds to a full minute.

Fishy Fingers1612d ago (Edited 1612d ago )

Personal experience aside (because obviously I'm lying and would want a slower SSD on my next gen wishlist). Numbers dont lie:

A typical 7200 RPM HDD will deliver a read/write speed of 80-160MB/s. On the other hand, a typical SSD will deliver read/write speed of between 200 MB/s to 550 - roughky 3x4 times faster

M.2 drive provides read/write speeds of up to 3,500 MB/s - roughty 4x6 times faster than SSD

All I'm suggesting is it's a nice to have.

Giblet_Head1612d ago (Edited 1612d ago )

@Fishy Fingers Those read/write speeds between SATA SSD and M.2 don't mean much in terms of gaming, the difference is with moving and accessing large files at a faster read/write speed. It's why most people use M.2 drives for installing their operating systems on. The impact they have on gaming is negligible when given the application within games and the practicality of a SATA SSD that can easily be installed or removed much like an HDD.

Fishy Fingers1612d ago

I appreciate that and we can argue over scenarios for or against. I was literally saying if they are including SSD it would be nice if they were the faster variant available.

DarkZane1612d ago (Edited 1612d ago )

Sorry, but the difference between M.2 and SSD is much bigger than SSD and HDD, even for gaming. SSD was nice back then when M.2 didn't exist, but the boost in speed you get from SSD compared to HDD is negligible compared to what you get with a M.2.

In fact, if you're still using a HDD or a normal SSD in your computer for games, applications or the OS, you're doing it wrong. You need to have only M.2 drives now. I have 1 TB M.2 drive and 2 TB M.2 drive and I wouldn't go back. I also have a 4TB HDD, but that's only for the huge amount of music and movies I have, which M.2 or SDD drives won't make a difference.

ABizzel11612d ago

@Dark

As the other said, the difference is not there, and that's one of the reasons these companies are banking on faster PCI 4 Express slots to hopefully enhance speed in other applications besides file transfer (the only area M.2 currently blows the competition away).

But in gaming, boot times, etc... the difference is negligible and down to maybe a couple of seconds at best. The interesting news is the new consoles are extremely likely to be using motherboards with said PCI 4E, so if they are using M.2 drives, then it could in theory offer even better speeds than most game PCs as far as load times, since PCI-4E adoption rate will just start picking up in programs sometime in 2020, and become more mainstream into 2020 - 2021.

A sata ssd is a BIG jump over a HDD, but sata ssd's max out at 550mb write times which when downloading a 100gb file can still make your pc run super slow do to high disk usage, with a 970 pro m.2 like I have, you can download a 100gb game and still do other tasks on your pc without a problem.

dragonopt11612d ago

I agree 100%, I've always used SSD since they came out and my friend said I'd see a jump going to a M.2.
I was disappointed, it's not really noticeable at all.

ActualWhiteMan1612d ago

Not M.2 but NVME. M.2 isn’t much of a jump over SATA.

But NVME... THAT is the game changer.

KwietStorm_BLM1612d ago

Bigger improvement from SSD to m.2 than HDD to SSD? You surely had a bad egg or a pos supplier.

Poopmist1612d ago

Go use a Windows 10 laptop with a HDD for 20 minutes and say that again

Hurfs1612d ago

Really, game wise I see around a second better loading times with my NVME drive's over my SSD's were as HHD to SSD was around 15 to 30 seconds faster. The problem is the CPU's just can't run software as fast as the NVME can send it. I don't have a bad PC before you ask 1700x with a 5700xt and 5 drive, two ssd two NVME and a HHD back up drive.

And it should be noted M.2 is just a connector you can put a mSATA drive in it as well, they have two cut outs on the connector were as NVME drives have one.

Yh you're not.

gamer78041613d ago (Edited 1613d ago )

agreed with this article, I hope there is more up their sleeves than SSD's loading times and bumping frame rates up to 60. (well now 4k & 60 if on a ps pro). While those are nice features, it doesn't really excite me.

DarXyde1612d ago

Based on what we've been told about the controller, that in itself sounds pretty awesome.

LightofDarkness1612d ago

There are some amazing console only games that are often disappointingly hamstrung by resolution, framerate and load times. Now you can play those games with comparable fidelity to the PCs of today. The only thing I'd really want to see is much higher framerate (100+), but they're only now focusing on getting games to 60 it seems, which is still a welcome step above the horrid 30fps limit we usually see.
