Microsoft: We Feel So Confident of Our Content Pipeline We Don't Need to Save Games for Scarlett

Microsoft feels so confident of the 1st-party content pipeline in development that there is no need to save games to be launched alongside Project Scarlett.

That's why many games are shipping earlier in 2020.

Pretty impressive really. Those new studios should be churning out stuff in time for Scarlett launch or just after.

@bouz, I've played lots of decent games on the xbo. Or are you only concerned with exclusives?
Exclusives dont matter to me but good fun games do. I'll play a good game, exclusive or not, because its a good game. I just don't understand this obsession with exclusives. And I've been gaming since 1977.

Eldyraen313d ago

I don’t really want a HB2. It stood on its own well enough and the subject matter likely wouldn’t have the same impact for me a second time either.

But I really want to see what the entire team can do again after that small team’s work.

nucky64313d ago

i liked hellblade; but, where do you think the story is going? or do you think there'll be a new story?

SyntheticForm313d ago

It'd be nice to have a Hellblade 2. Loved the first game.

@Nucky

I think that's an issue. Hellblade seemed to be a self-contained game, and it doesn't look like there's any room for a sequel. I can't imagine how that story could continue but I hope it does.

indysurfn312d ago

You dont make AAA first party games in a years time. Not in 2 years times. So Just because Microsoft bought them does not mean they will have AAA games by March-April 2020. Yeah they may have the games but it takes the opposite of lazy and cheap rushing to make AAA games.

I am honestly surprised. They could hold a good number of these titles for next gen just to boost the numbers, but I understand that now is probably the best time to try to begin to change the "no gamez" perception.

I still think they need some heavyweight announcements for E3 and for early 2021. Halo and BC will give them a strong launch, but they need to be guns blazing for at least a year or two after launch especially.

I would guess that when they made those acquisitions, they also wrote some checks to 3rd parties to boost their lineup. I guarantee that Sony did.

CaptainHenry916313d ago

I'm doing a wait and see approach with Halo: Infinite but I do agree with everything else you said

The Wood313d ago

Wait and see is the best approach.

Christopher313d ago

***They could hold a good number of these titles for next gen just to boost the numbers***

With forward and backward compatibility, there's no need. The purpose of the next hardware will be to push the new tech and update games to support it and its features. Sony should honestly follow suit, but it looks like they're slowing down games to get them closer to their PS5 launch.

pwnmaster3000313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

@Christopher

I disagree.... Sony has enough games next year to be fine. Most likely they will announce PS5, and with games like nioh 2, last of us, first release of ff7 remake and GOT, I think they would be fine. They already dominated this gen and I think what launch title they have for the PS5 will be more important. Because if they pull a PS3 launch with the PS5, I’m gonna wait a to purchase one.

Christopher313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

***Sony has enough games next year to be fine.***

They have one "AAA exclusive" before the PS5 release.

Likely the same as Microsoft in addition to the other games Microsoft is making and putting out rather than relying on third party.

***They already dominated this gen and I think what launch title they have for the PS5 will be more important.***

Wait, so now it's okay to ignore the tail end of a console life to sell the next console? If the games are coming to PS4, I see no reason to delay them just for hardware considering Sony has "so many games" in development.

pwnmaster3000313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

@christopher

I literally listed 4 games that’s heavy hitters for next year..
Nioh got really good reviews and sale.
Ghost of Tsushima (GOT) still has a 2020 release date
Last of us
And as of right now console exclusive FF7. (Probably multi)
Also dreams is hinted for 2020.
Also the new predator multiplayer game
And also wild has a rumor of 2020.

How is that ignoring the tail end???
Also when did I ever say ignoring the tail end is bad this gen??? I’ll wait for your respond.
I even stated that’s what MS should do.

“Likely the same as Microsoft in addition to the other games Microsoft is making and putting out rather than relying on third party.”

Sony is pushing both first and third party next year so what’s your point?
Sony first party studio is always on point. Pretty sure they are making games just like MS right now.

Christopher313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

@pwnmaster3000

So, just so I understand this correctly, you're promoting 3rd-party bought exclusives over 1st-party derived exclusives as an argument as to why Sony should push back their own IPs to prop up the PS5 launch titles which will also be available on PS4?

1. TLoUP2 is the *only* confirmed game before PS5 release. All others are Holiday 2020, which coincides with the PS5 release. (EDIT: And MLB The Show, it's an annual release. Sorry, I always forget they have that sport game under wraps)

2. I only posted 1st-party titles from XBO, but I guess if we are taking into 3rd-party exclusives, we could prop those up as well? Let alone perhaps we should account for the fact that multiple IPs that Microsoft now owns aren't being withheld from PS4 (Minecraft Dungeons, Psychonauts 2, Wasteland 3).

3. None of what you said goes against my argument that Xbox was criticized heavily for doing exactly what Sony is doing, which is relying on 3rd-party exclusives at the tail end of their life in order to put their 1st-party offerings at the forefront of the next generation.

4. I 100% stand behind my claim: With the forward and backward compatibility design of both the PS4/PS5 and XBO/Scarlett, there is no reason to hold back 1st-party titles. If either of these companies start withholding releases based on 3rd-party offerings, then they're not delivering for their gamers but doing the exact thing that Xbox One gets criticized for regularly, buying exclusives because they "have no games."

***Sony is pushing both first and third party next year so what’s your point?***

Actually, they aren't pushing any 1st-party next year at this time and recently delayed the one they had pushed early next year. Otherwise, release dates are non-existent at this time. Let alone, do you not understand that the next year will see the release of the PS5?

And, again, if Sony has so many games being made, why are they not pushing to release these games? Because they're relying on 3rd-party titles? Interesting take. I'm not going to support that. I would find it hypocritical for many here to suddenly support that as well after the rampant complaints since the end of last generation and the entirety of this generation.

Atom666313d ago

I think Christopher's point is well taken. If we're talking about what's in the best interest of the 150 million PS4 and Xb1 owners, nobody should be hitting the brakes.

The only reason to hold off on 2020 output would be to (almost artificially) boost the appeal for new hardware next year.

Xbox has a lot of non-xbox owners to attract. Launching a nice new system with new games is the best approach obviously. Will PS4-only or other non- X1 owners care about Halo being playable on the X1? Probably not. Good on them for not completely holding back in 2020 though. I truly expected they'd go that route.

PS is in a weird spot. More so than last gen, I think the majority of PS4 owners aren't itching to upgrade. How do they convince us to buy the PS5 with cross generational games?

From a consumer perspective, I'm happy to let the first year or two of next gen play out while continuing to enjoy my current systems. I'm curious to see how we are enticed to upgrade if games aren't held back for next gen.

And he's right, it is hypocritical. Plus, I still give MS credit for funding 360 ports of Horizon 2, Titanfall, and RotTR well after X1's launch.

This next transition will be even more interesting though.

indysurfn312d ago

I agree they need to do this before next gen starts. They have a reputation there is no denying it. Cant wait to have parents ask the guy which system will my son/daughter want for the kinds of games available.

Just because they say it, doesn't make it truth, show don't tell, i'll wait till they actually show the games and also the type of games they show, because so far they have only showed Gamepass filler.

Obscure_Observer313d ago

Crossfire X, Flight Simulator and Everwild are far from be GP fillers!

Besides, i know that a LOT of those games that you call GP fillers will turn out to be more fun and engaging than many AAA crapy games.

Microsoft has their biggest games close to their chests! New games from Turn 10, The Initiative, Playground, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, 343i are yet to be revealed!

313d ago
rainslacker313d ago

BS. Almost 4 years with one AAA game a year, and barely any mode tier or indie games is not people spreading some false narrative. They brought studios who had content ready for this gen. They didnt do anything to make that software become a thing. All the stuff coming this year they got through acquisition. Ms own statements seemed to point that they didnt care this gen anymore. So it's not people at fault for spreading some "false narrative"

I'm happy there will be a couple more games finally to play on my x1, but saying crap like in the title isnt something to praise when they havent done jack squat for years.

The Wood313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

Rain. . Don't waste your time. Their whole lack output has been debunked by 'speak' and anyone who questions this is usually met with bullish responses like we haven't seen the underperformance this gen. I wish them luck and believe they'll do better but talk is cheap so let's see fruition before all the 'debunked' talk is spoken. Been hearing this crap all gen especially after a vp speaks. Stop

Man instead or being worries about debunking stuff they have to release quality content

Shaggy

Crackdown 3
Sea of thieves

False narrative, indeed! Before goin out telling people how Phil Spencer had abandoned Xbox One owners, one should have waited till all was said and done for Xbox One.

But some people simply can´t control their emotions and they just have to go out running their mouths spreading FUD!

"Almost 4 years with one AAA game a year, and barely any mode tier or indie games is not people spreading some false narrative."

Nonsense! Xbox had SIX first party studios at that time and you expected them to deliver buckloads of AAA first party games? Gimme a break!

I don´t care about the past! Xbox One gamers already are and will still benefit from Spencer´s efforts THIS generation, and that´s all that matter to me!

"Phil Spencer abandoned Xbox One owners to focus on the Scarlett"

BS!

RpgSama313d ago

"Nonsense! Xbox had SIX first party studios at that time and you expected them to deliver buckloads of AAA first party games? Gimme a break!"

Bleeding Edge

pwnmaster3000313d ago

I don’t disagree on your optimistic mind set and the fact MS is trying but when they haven’t delivered most of this gen, you can’t blame people for being cautious to what they say. Compare to the 360, x1 was a disaster... not once in this gen was I like “ damn I wish I had an X1”... but with the 360, they actually convinced me to buy one.. MS lost me with the X1 but with the Scarlett, maybe they might have me buy it.. it depends if they actually deliver.

313d ago
313d ago
rainslacker313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

They've barely done anything for 4 years. They got a good number of games through acquisition. Sure, they're doing something for the last year, but that doesn't remove the four years they weren't doing anything. All those games they got through acquired studios would have been on Xbox anyways. Rare's game is the only one right now that is the exclusion.

One last year of X1 releases from MS, after 4 years of barely anything is not cause for me to think I have to wait until the fat lady sings to say that MS abandoned the X1. I wouldn't even be upset about them now bringing games, and I'm not, just the attitude from Spencer that they are awesome.

Quite literally, this "we're going to be awesome, just you wait", is the exact thing I've been tired of him saying for several years now. I've even expressed it in those exact terms, to you, on many occasions that that is how he spins his PR. Now, he's doing it again. "Hey everyone, look how awesome we are".

Phil isn't doing anything to bring more support for X1 in the last year. Rare's game is the only exception right now, and maybe Halo Infinite which they are pushing to market Scarlett already. Buying games the X1 would have gotten anyways is nothing noteworthy.

But, somehow, you want to say we've all been spreading false narratives, when for 4 years, all you've done is talk about how great MS is, and how they have all this support, and how Spencer is worth listening too.

Sure...that really is all of us fan boys on the other side spreading some false narrative.

Make no mistake, all the criticism for MS output of games this gen is based on their own inaction. It's not some false narrative that they've made up, but direct results of MS not giving anything to fight back against those criticisms, no matter how much a very very small number of people still try to do so.

@Captain

I can't speak for everyone else, but my message is squarely directed at Obscure, and his implication that everyone else was wrong because Spencer said something, and they had some games to show. This is the exact same back and forth we have every single time that Spencer opens his mouth. He talks about how Spencer is the best thing ever. I say, all he does is talk. but this time, Obscure goes a step further to say that this is proof that all the people that have criticisms are completely wrong about the entire past four years.

I laid out quite clearly why I disagree with him, and as far as MS goes, I'm fine with them doing what they're doing to get more games for their system and support their platform. If they had to buy studios to do that, then that's what it is, but it shows commitment to their brand. I won't criticize that. but I will point out that MS hasn't shown that those with criticisms were wrong in what they said.

Obscure_Observer312d ago (Edited 312d ago )

@rainslacker

"Quite literally, this "we're going to be awesome, just you wait", is the exact thing I've been tired of him saying for several years now. I've even expressed it in those exact terms, to you, on many occasions that that is how he spins his PR. Now, he's doing it again. "Hey everyone, look how awesome we are"."

What? How about some quotes from Phil? The very frase on the topic´s title that made you so "upseted" wasn´t even said by Spencer! Are you on some made up BS, again?

"Phil isn't doing anything to bring more support for X1 in the last year. Rare's game is the only exception right now, and maybe Halo Infinite which they are pushing to market Scarlett already."

The only exception? What about Playground´s new RPG, Flight Simulator 2020, Gears Tatics, Ori, Crossfire X, Battletoads... to name a few? Is Halo Infinite a Scarlett exclusive game that we don´t know about?

"But, somehow, you want to say we've all been spreading false narratives, when for 4 years, all you've done is talk about how great MS is, and how they have all this support, and how Spencer is worth listening too.

Sure...that really is all of us fan boys on the other side spreading some false narrative."

Not all fan boys on the other side are driven by blind hate! This quote is from Ultranova among others like you telling people how Phil shouldn´t be trusted:

"Even though I've learned that I should never trust MS's word, on anything, and now Phil's as well, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one simply because the uproar on the lack of exclusives has been particularly loud. So I believe (want to beleive) MS has indeed ordered some exclusives for the xbox.

When do I expect them? 2020 at the earliest. Those games will most probably launch on both current and next gen xbox simultaneously."

You see, no all fan boys on the other side are driven by hate and bias.

To say that you´re disappointed about how Microsoft didn´t delivered the way you expected for the past 4 years is valid criticism. But to say that Phil shouldn´t be trusted, that he is a compulsive liar, that you know better than buy another Xbox console as long he´s in charge, that he left Xbox One owners behind to pursuit next generation cutting short the current generation, is nothing but personal attacks and dissimination of FUD and lies.

That's Sony road, they havent start a triple AAA game development for PS4 since 2017, all Sony games that hit this year and next year have started development before 2017, they have already shift to PS5, and are only finishing the games they had already started for PS4.

neutralgamer1992313d ago

Yet they still have more AAA games in development for ps4

The last of us 2
Ghost

Both of them will be bigger than anything ms shows

Traecy313d ago

Sony's PS4 has been releasing 1st,2nd & 3rd party AAA exclusives consistently every year including AA,Indie,Niche & VR exclusives & will do so at the very end of it's lifecycle. Can't say that about the competition.

xX-oldboy-Xx313d ago

How has it taken for them to work this out? That would be my concern - and let's be honest what they've shown looks dire.

Absolutely nothing to get excited about.

Kribwalker312d ago

you guys are hilarious. Berate MS for focussing on their big hitters and say “We don’t want the same old thing, we want variety, we want first party exclusives . Show us new IP’s, show us something different”

MS reveals multiple exclusive new IP’s, “The situation looks dire, where’s there big games”

your true colours are showing, no matter what they do, you’d never be happy with it

nucky64313d ago

it's "impressive" that they're making games? it's what they're supposed to be doing.

XtaZ313d ago

Reading the comments from all the pathetic Sony fanboys here is hilarious. First they hate MS/Xbox or not having enough games this gen, but now they hate on them for launching too many games at the end of the gen instead of saving them for Scarlett.

Sony fanboys truly are the worst.

BlackTar187313d ago

No one is mad about them releasing games lol how about they just release games first? It's been lackluster for xbox as a brand since two years left into 360, it has been around 6-7 solid years of little unique content. That's the truth and you have to release the new games in question consistently to remove that stigma about them.

313d ago
sinspirit313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

-These games are also playable on the next console, so they can get customers right now that will still buy the next box.
-They also have to rely on this next year to sell their next console, and because of how desolate X1 has been this whole gen they are trying to make it look better for the next purchase next year.
-I still don't see Gamepass staying along the same course. It will never produce more money to release $60 AAA games near guaranteed to sell millions. What they're doing is trying to get as many people on board on the service as possible and hook people into this service and to get the next XBox. This is a clear as day tactic. Sure, good for you right now if you have it. But, I'm not pushing this service to succeed till it's got a lot more time and credibility under its belt.
-It's one year dude. Everyone is eating up this statement, but it's literally only one year to fill lol. Its not a lot of time to "withhold" anything. Again, they will release some things to tide people over and not gain further negative perception of the console to hopefully buy the new one coming out.

Zeref312d ago (Edited 312d ago )

i'm starting to think there are more teams that have multiple projects. I think Coalition is working on something besides gears and 343 probably has a spin-off halo in the works. Playgrounds is working on Fable. Rare is working on everwilds. Obsidian is working on a AAA Rpg reportedly based on pillars of eternity. Ninja Theory is working on their next big AAA game. Undead Labs is working on State of Decay 3 or maybe a new IP. Compulsion is probably working on something new as well or maybe a sequel to we happy few. Inxile is also working on their next big project. They recently hired a blizzard veteran. There is also the Initiative with their AAAA ip.

I'm probably forgetting a few.

There is just so much to look forward to. Exciting times for Xbox gamers!

I think you mean catching up...
Nintendo and Sony been doing this all gen.
Happy that micro is stepping there game up but when your that low, anything little hey do will make a bigger splash.
Those games they showed Would have generated little hype if it was Sony or Nintendo, but since it’s Microsoft and they are finally revealing much needed content, it’s gonna get hyped up.

It implies for real world stuff. A lazy worker who finally started to show progression will attract more attention then a worker who was already doing that.

Be happy but don’t be satisfied yet... I don’t care what company you are. Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, those company owe us, the consumer, because with out us, they are nothing and if they been performing below average all gen and I spent all that money on their product, I wouldn’t let them off that easy, because they revealed some stuff.... that goes for any company.

Why do they keep comparing GamePass to Netflix? It’s literally nothing close to it compared to Stadia or PSNow. Netflix is 100% streaming with the ability to download certain content (unless you still rent DVDs from them).

Battlestar23313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

Gamepass is the future. Why pay full price for games when you can just rent them for cheap. Hopefully this will finish off physical media once and for all and also end the need for $60 games. Microsoft has already won next gen and there is nothing Sony can release that can prevent that.

its cool to talk about things, basing it on nothing just pure hope and personal bias. But its also good to know that with that talk you are not within the realm of REALITY, but pure fiction.
Its okay, I dont mind you having that, but still, reality is what is and not what you wish it to be, its good to know that

RpgSama313d ago

That makes total sense from a developer economics point of view, instead of customers buying their games full price, they rent them for cheap. /S

And I'm not talking about the EA's and Activision's of this world, they don't deserve our money.
