Pokemon Sword And Shield Change The Way The Games Restrict Players

A player restriction mechanic in Pokemon Sword and Shield gives players a new twist on the way they're being controlled, though not many seem to like the idea.

"Based on footage from the livestream, it seems as though players are restricted to only being able to catch Pokemon within a few levels of their current highest-level Pokemon. The stream showed a developer in a fight with a level 28 Sneasel, but when it came to options for the fight, capture wasn’t one of them because the Pokemon was above level 25"

What the actual f***

Did they really just restrict you catching a Pokemon, the games foundation is Gotta Catch em All and not only did they take like 60% of the Pokemon away they are also restricting you on what you can catch

Like people on Reddit have said, what about if you run into a high level Shiny Pokemon? Imagine how annoying that would be when it's only because you haven't gotten that far in the game to catch it.

After the recent fan stream there's a lot of little things that have been removed or just half arsed, even the battle screens are either generic, blank or don't fit into the area you're in. For example

Water battle? I think not

City battle? Nope

Seriously guys go onto the Pokemon Reddit and see for yourself what other stuff has been removed. It's lazy at this point and it's not just the Dex cut, they remove the Pokemon to give us high quality animations, graphics and other stuff but it's a complete lie

the list piled on and on. This isn't just people complaining for the sake of just being bitchy and entitled, and GF seems to be ignoring it all. Despite it all I still pre-ordered Shield, but I'm fully prepared to be disappointed with it. I'm already very disappointed that basically all water starters from previous games aren't in these.

-Foxtrot2047d ago

Seriously, everything you work for is your money and as a human being you can buy whatever the f*** you like, that's what you are entitled to.

However please reconsider and don't buy it, if you buy this game despite knowing the faults they will take that hard earned money you've worked your ass off for and nothing will change, NOTHING. They are not doing anything and ignoring us because they KNOW people will buy this game, it's arrogance at the highest level and as a fan you've got to hit them where it hurts. You could possibly buy Luigis Mansion 3 or something worth while, maybe the Witcher 3 port I don't know.

Again, it's your money, you get to do whatever the hell you like and I can't tell you how to spend it on a game but please think about it because voting with your wallet is the only way they are going to listen. Show them this is not the first ever main line Pokemon game you deserve and as a die hard Pokemon fan you deserve better.

"I'm already very disappointed that basically all water starters from previous games aren't in these"

Well apparently people who have data mined the game recently have shown us that some of the cut Pokemon are actually in the games files. Whether they are in the game who knows but it could be there because they were cut last minute or because they are waiting for future events.

572 sprites but only 435 Pokemon in total

Well here's what i'm gonna do. If gamestop is doing their "Guaranteed to love it" deal on this game. Then If i don't like it I can just return it within 48 hours of release. Yeah maybe GF gets the sale, but then gamestop will try to get someone to buy the used copy over the new copy. I have a full refund that I can just use on Jedi fallen order or something. That way I can see for myself if its just a bunch of turbo nerds calling bs over nothing or if the game is in fact not fun at all.

link2Dpast2046d ago

Lmao you a self destructing mother f$cker. You literally gave yourself so many negative reason ms to not buy this game but you still preordered to eventually knowing you’ll be disappointed wtf lol you can’t make this up. Society got you people going looney, like damn try the game first and stop following what you hear and make your own decisions. ok past water starters are not in it, I wonder why? Oh yeah it’s a new freaking gen pokemon. You’ve must of made some horrible dumb mistakes in your life

Relientk772047d ago

They have 1000 developers working on Shield and Sword and what happens. The game looks last-gen at best, they cut over 1/2 the Pokemon out, and now restricting players on catching Pokemon within a few levels.

When Game Freak actually puts all the Pokemon in the next game (maybe), doesn't add random player restrictions, actually "evolve" Pokemon to next-gen, and give us the game we deserve, then I'll look at getting it.

Next-gen example: https://i.redd.it/ktheb6eed...

link2Dpast2046d ago

It’s a kids game, which basically means it’s made for kids. Get over all these changes here and there that are so infuriating and just don’t buy the game and go backlog older gen Pokémon games.

-Foxtrot2046d ago

It’s not just a kids game

They literally said that Sword and Shield was created with long time fans in mind

Clearly that was bullshit

Don’t apologise for them or make excuses they clearly don’t give a shit about any of us.

Stopac2046d ago (Edited 2046d ago )

Sorry foxtrot but they ARE marketing towards kids pretty hard on this one. Same for previous switch games. In fact a lot of the switch’s retail marketing showcases kids playing these games with their parents or siblings. I have marketing material that shows this.

It’s a problem with this company, they wanna appeal to family more than the 30 year old who played their games in the 90s. E for everyone, but you know, that’s just retail speak for “this is for the kids”

I mean who’s gonna miss all the og Pokémon in this game? Little Billy getting his first or second Pokémon game or big bob who was there since red and blue? My store has over 100 preorders and they’re mostly from parents and kids.

Rachel_Alucard2046d ago (Edited 2046d ago )

So is every single Nintendo game. Yet they can manage just fine appealing to everyone. Pokemon can't even manage one demographic let alone multiple. That's also no excuse for half assing so many things and cutting out so much just because of who it appeals to. There's no Nintendo seal of quality with this one.

Xaevi2046d ago

Wouldn't pre-ordering the game, despite all the negativity, to play and form my own valid opinion on it after playing it be my own decision? I'm well aware it's a new gen, I've played previous games and those never stopped me from using previous gen favourites so I don't get your argument. Jeez what crawled up your butt dood?

TargusX2046d ago

THE most idiotic statement I...have...ever....heard!

Juusterey2045d ago

so what's your point?
anything goes for a kids game?
kids games can't have standards?

Stopac2045d ago (Edited 2045d ago )

I’m just saying they’re trying to appeal to kids more than adults. You’re fooling yourself if you think your opinions matter just as much to them as a child’s for Pokémon. That’s probably why they thought making the cuts to the Pokédex was a good idea.

They “say” they’re trying to appeal to everyone but honestly that’s just PR. This is just a situation where you put your money where your mouth is and just chalk it up to whether or not it’s gonna make a difference.

They can screw this up, but I won’t know till I buy the game. If GAMESTOP isn’t doing the return in 48 hours of release thing then I’ll wait for reviews before buying.

Juusterey2045d ago

......surely not
nobody could be stupid enough to think this was a good idea right?

link2Dpast2045d ago

To your previous comment on “kids games can’t have standards?” Uhm absolutely not, do you not remember games before all these restrictions. Super ghost and goblins, streets of rage, shoot even donkey Kong country were rage inducing “kids games” so yea screw standards. There were so many on the fence titles that were appropriate for kids back then, only thing that mattered that it was good, it wasn’t dumb down made easy for “kids” they just made the games. Nowadays it’s. A little different younger kids don’t like a challenge and having 500+ pokemon for kids would be a horrible idea

XabiDaChosenOne2045d ago

Its Crazy how the first Ni Nu Kuni ( which is available on the Switch btw) does Pokemon better than Pokemon....amazing.

It seems as though Gamefreak refuses to give us a legit Pokemon game, so let's hope the future is bright with these upcoming titles and that they turn out to be everything promised: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

I like Pokemon and all, but it's held a monopoly far far too long and it's clear that it's going to the heads of the executives at Gamefreak. They clearly don't believe they need to put much effort into their games anymore and they will just print money. They're probably not wrong, sadly, but if they won't make the game we want, perhaps someone else will, and if other IPs find some success, maybe that will push the minds behind Pokemon to bring their best to the table...since that's clearly not what we're getting nowadays.

As for me, I know where my money's going, and it sure as heck isn't going to Sword and Shield. I'll wait for something better. It may take some time, but I'm patient. Disclaimer: Not all of the games featured in the above vid are Pokemon-like titles, but there are at least a few in there that are, and sound great. It's also true that they won't have the expansive roster that Pokemon has amassed over the years (except potentially for that one centered around breeding), but they sound much better mechanically than the PoS that Sword and Shield is shaping up to be, and if they're successful, future DLC, updates and sequels can potentially add more creatures.

Majin-vegeta2046d ago

SMH...no digimon mentioned 😤

Tross2046d ago

I believe that vid was centered around indie efforts. Digimon, Yokai Watch and other such properties are certainly good alternatives that further justify giving Gamefreak the finger. It's also worth noting though, that they're big enough departures from the Pokemon formula that they're not wholly identical, and although I'm sure that will be true of these indie efforts too, they certainly seem to be closer to the mark of what fans are wanting in a modern Pokemon game.

I'm thankful that we have titles such as the Digimon games to sink our teeth into (and would love it if they would get a dub so friends and family would also be interested in checking them out), and I'm also thankful that they're not actually Pokemon knock-offs (as there's something to be said for a series being unique and doing its own thing), but Pokemon has held a scary monopoly on its particular winning formula, and I think it's high-time someone did something about that.

I'm also currently wanting something that's like Pokemon, but evolves its formula in a meaningful way (pun intended). Gamefreak has been criticized for years for not changing much with their formula, and although they've finally changed things, they haven't made it better.

At its core, the Pokemon experience is something that fans love, and messing with that too much is a bad idea. When fans say they want it to evolve, they're saying they want a game that respects the core experience, but expands on it in a meaningful way rather than restricting it. An MMO like Temtem, or a game that expands the breeding mechanic like Monster Crown are examples of the kinds of things fans would love to see. Restrictions in what creatures can be caught, or what options there are for allocating experience are not the kinds of things fans want to see.

gold_drake2046d ago

what is going on lol first the lack of animation, then the lack of pokemon, then the missing Pokémon moves and abilities, and now that ? geez.
