Review: 'Death Stranding' Is the Weirdest Game I've Ever Played | Time

Time: "And yet Death Stranding is also a game where Mads Mikkelsen pursued me relentlessly through the afterlife, where one of its principal villains seems to know that they’re in a video game, where directors Guillermo Del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn make up the supporting cast, and a stillborn baby in a jar is both a piece of equipment that lets you avoid ghosts and the emotional core of the story. I’ve never played anything like Death Stranding, and I doubt I ever will again. That alone is worth the $60 price tag."

This game is a breath of Fresh air.

CrimsonWing692020d ago

I was trying to figure out how it could be a “breath of fresh air” from hearing that in reviews, but now having played it I totally get it.

I’m only on Episode 2, but if it stays like it is I could absolutely seeing this be a personal contender for Game of the Year for me.

telekineticmantis2020d ago

Same here, it's as much a Walking Simulator as Mario is a Jumping Simulator.

bluefox7552020d ago

It's awesome so far, like on another level, I completely don't understand the negativity, I think it has more to do with the game's message and metaphors than it does the quality of the game.

UltraNova2020d ago

I'm on chapter 3....damn I'm in love and it will only get better...Kojima I salute you.

darthv722020d ago

I was watching Johnny's first thoughts about it last night. It is a rather intriguing game.

I can't wait to play it! Monday 😬

HaVoK3082020d ago

How? Weird for the sake of being weird? A game where the budget clearly went to c-list actors? Which apparently left little to find actual gameplay? Fresh indeed.

Z5012020d ago

How would more money devoted to gameplay change the gameplay?

sinspirit2018d ago (Edited 2018d ago )

Really?? So being different is only for the "sake of it" instead of trying to explore new avenues and provide creativity to the stale format? This is the same ridiculous view that the IGN reviewer had(who reviews yearly sports franchises and not story-based adventure games). You could tell he only played the popular options for open-world games like Fallout, Skyrim, and GTA.

The budget had no limit. There was no compromise for the gameplay. This is what the game is. The gameplay is actually really good but you wouldn't know. If only the completion of objectives, having to kill X and Y, or fast-paced anything is what is required to hold your attention then quit even talking about it. This is an adventure story based game. It's about the adventure, the obstacles in your way, preparing your journey, the unexpected, and the story. You don't need tick boxes and combat sessions every minute to have fun. Either try it with an open mind or accept it's not your game. It doesn't have to be your type of game to be considered good either. So, quit trying to insult it for what it does extremely well.

Artemidorus2020d ago

Certainly is for a walking simulation.

Everybody claims they want a new fresh idea, until they get one.

ClayRules20122020d ago (Edited 2020d ago )

Exactly. I just finished playing Modern Warfare (which was very enjoyable) but I’m ready for something fresh and new, which is Death Stranding, later tonight. I’m gonna soak in the world, the gameplay, and the long cutscenes with a smile on my face.

Rude-ro2020d ago

No.. Shilled gaming media, live services money, and fankids hate gaming.

Big money, wants your money and connected online.

Games like this draw people in.. and they want it tamed.
Can not buy that season pass or predatory marketing to by in game cosmetics for $20 if you are having a great time in a game not concerned with it.

CDbiggen2020d ago (Edited 2020d ago )

Look. I just want to play it and enjoy typical Kojima brand cringe that I always feel uncomfortable playing around friends and family (xD Die-Hard Man).
It's a sense of familiarity. I know what I'm getting with a Kojima game.

That's not proof, it's your opinion
which means you are lying, or you are a writer for a living who doesn't know what "prove" means
which is it?

anast35d ago

Content writers have to be hyperbolic.

Bwremjoe35d ago

On n4g, I frequently get so annoyed by comments that I take the time to login so I can downvote someone. Today is such a day. What a pointless comment…

jambola35d ago

that's pretty pathetic
Can't believe you're talking about pointless, and bragging about downvoting someone lmao

DMgHalt34d ago

I logged in just to downvote as well, and even took the time to comment to make them aware of the fact lmao

Got the Director's Cut platinum a couple of hours ago.
Ready for DS2 now.

Storm2350d ago

I have been slowly working my way though this game for months. I keep playing other games in between but I want to finish it before DS2.

Knushwood Butt50d ago

I ended up with over 140 hours on it, but I wasn't exactly rushing. Ended up seeing to it that all roads were rebuilt too.
There are still a few Half Life missions left that I think I'll do.

lukasmain50d ago

Man I love this game. Platinumed it and played through it a 2nd time just for fun. I'm day 1 with bells on for the sequel

anast50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

In still drop in this world from time to time. I just played it yesterday.

Video Games Proud To Not Be For Everyone

Plenty of games have made a name for themselves as being proud of the fact they’re not to everyone’s taste over the years.

If you make something for everyone, you please no one.

mkis007108d ago

I mean I can do without nintendo games if given the choice. They are not nearly as mature rated as the average.

Yui_Suzumiya108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

Yeah but I use my Switch OLED primarily for anime booba style games (visual novels and JRPG's) and ultra violent FPS's. Far from kid friendly, lol

JohnBLZ107d ago

The problem with that line of though is that games have never been as much "for everyone" as in 2025.
The only thing that's not for everyone in gaming lately is the gatekeeping. Devs will try to appeal to as many people as they can, but if you dare have your own tastes and prefer something a bit more obscure, then you have "L takes" because at the moment, popular opinion equals right opinion.
So devs should simply own the fact they water down their games and go Hollywood to please everybody. Then indies will go back to being trendsetters that are different from AAAs, instead of being roguelike and gacha copycats.

JohnBLZ107d ago

Okay, but "games I'm not meant to love" means I won't play them.
Games are for fun. They're their own art, it's a disservice to reduce them to interactive stories. You can focus on making your audience entertained on a positive way and still stand out.

jznrpg107d ago

No game is for everyone. Some games are more mainstream or casual friendly but there is always someone who won’t like it. Same with anything else
