Sony's Jim Ryan: We had to make changes to deliver our PlayStation 5 dream

From GameIndustry.biz: "Jim Ryan wants to have a word.

PlayStation's boss wanted to address some of the points that were raised in an article we posted last month. The piece followed the reveal of PlayStation 5, and reflected some of the discontent we'd been hearing about Sony's strategy. There were concerns that the company's decision to not speak too much (and avoid the big industry shows) was giving an edge to its competitors. And then there's the disruption caused by PlayStation's recent restructure."

Interesting interview.

On PS Now:

'Ryan says that the results have been a 50% increase in subscribers to one million customers in just 30 days.'.

TheKingKratos322d ago

Also on ps now

"It's an area that is fast changing and fluid," notes Ryan. "The nature and scale of some of the first-party games that we are making leads us to think that, right now, it's better to spend energy on making sure that the launch of those games is a massive entertainment event. I would cite God of War and Spider-Man, and The Last of Us 2 next year will fall into that category
"That's where we stand right now. But our stance on the inclusion of first-party games in PlayStation Now in terms of what we've done this month is very different to our stance 12 months ago. I don't want to say this is what PlayStation Now is going to be like forever. But certainly right now, given how some of our first party IP is incredibly special and valuable, we just want to treat them with amazing care and respect, and have those launches be clean and pure."

I read that as, they are really considering shortening the amount of time between new retail release and then having those new releases on psnow. Smart move as the bulk of new release sales are within the first month or two and then after that they should come to the service. They know there is a market for new release rentals. They have seen it first hand with their movies for years and when they do it with games it will be just as big.

TheKingKratos322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

I read as clear as what is written ... they respect their titles to just through them into a service like this or game pass and they better spend the time and care on those titles instead of just have to worry about how would they work on that service

Bottom line, they will keep the titles for playstation systems because the developers worked hard to bring them to life and they deserve better than through them for ppl to use the free trial to play them and move on ...which is indeed very smart

Captain and Darth,

PS exclusives coming to PS Now after one + years is one thing and being there day 1 or a couple months later is an entirely different matter; the latter significantly diminishes the perceived quality of the game being released(Ryan did a great job explaining this), a fact that will surely affect the publisher and make them think about how much effort they need to put in future releases, wether that comcens production values or marketing push or game structure alterations to suit such a model.

Reading this interview, made me feel reinvigorated about PlayStation because Ryan emmits reassurance that Sony/PlayStation takes us, the gamers, and what we like and dont like equally very seriously and plans ahead in two interchangeable ways - how will games be played and delivered in the near future and how/what their community likes to play them - allowing them to evolve and still keep us happy.

Sony has without a doubt cracked the gaming secret sauce and I cant wait to see what the future holds.

TheKingKratos322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

CaptainTravel

No they just said it that won't happen anytime soon snd they would rather flucs on their exclusives with care and respect and again GOW is gone after a month

322d ago
TheKingKratos322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

GOW was there to drive sales and for a limited time only and they did just to make ppl notice the service

And i can read just fine ... they will feed this service which i find complete crap tbh games but not their top of the line titles because they care about them and even if they did ... it will be along time for that to happen and will likely timed as well

This is never going to be like game pass because unlike xbox games ,playstation exclusives sell alot

That's a testament to what can be achieved when you actually support your service with relevant games that people are interested in playing. No one is going to sub to a gaming service that houses mostly older titles...dropping the price and putting games like God of War and other newer titles will have that effect. Im glad they are seeing good results from this, this bolds well for my own personal plan to use PS Now next gen for my Sony exclusive fix when needed. If Sony can release their newer games to the service even faster, that would also be a plus.

ocelot07322d ago

I can't see them releasing first party titles quicker or at least much quicker. I think they will release there titles for full price like they do now. Then after 4-5 months when sales for the game slows down. Then release on PS Now.

timotim322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

@ocelot

That's fair. However, most people wouldn't have foreseen them putting God of War on the service this fast either...now that Sony sees what this can do for their sub counts, who knows what that will bring in the future. Im willing to wait 4-5 months on SP games though...that would be amazing imo. The game isn't going to evolve much outside of a couple pieces of DLC packs and unlike MP, I wont feel left behind due to everyone else playing the game and leveling up. I can wait for it to hit PS Now (with improved resolution and frames) and go at my own pace...brilliant.

TheKingKratos322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

God of war will be gone after a month or something and based on what he said that's not going to happen any time soon again because they rather spend that time and energy on making their titles as good as possible

timotim322d ago

@TheKing

I mean...how long do you think it takes to beat God of War??? Again, I'd just be subbing for the SP stuff...I could end it twice in a couple months, I'm fine with that. And no...the "marquee" are expected to continue...i just saw a story of Persona 5 being added next.

rainslacker322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

No one except the million customers they already have? Or do you mean the 750k they had before?

Not everything on psnow was just old titles.

Teflon02322d ago

tim

Persona 5 is a $20 dollar game now lol. It being added isn't all that impressive and it's a 2016 game. Why it went up do fast in subs is 1. The pricing everyone has been asking for since the beginnning. The second is this is heavily advertised. It even has a tile on the PS4 main screen that can't even be hidden in a folder lol. They're finally pushing it, instead of having it sit there non chalant lol.

That's what active advertising and pricing does. Sony drops game prices so fast I don't even think it's a big deal for them to put big games on it. They have a growing catalog, which I'd be more than happy with

TheKingKratos322d ago

timotim

It doesn't matter how many times you beat it in the next couple of month it still will be gone and on top of that you are not even getting the best qualtiy out of the the game with such low res and bad input lag .... it still won't be there again

And persona 5 lol.... great time to own PsNow NOW to play a game from ps3 era /s

See what happens when you have a good price point and you start adding in some bigger and a little more recent games?

solideagle322d ago

now Krib will come and say how Cloud gaming is future, Microsoft is the new light in this dark times /s

Kribwalker322d ago

nah i wouldn’t say that.
I would say that it appears as if sony were happy with the recent success of their PSnow service on PC/PS and that adding strong recent first party games to the psnow library and lowering the price shows that with the right price and games people would be more open to signing up for sub services, and that it seems, based on what he’s saying, that they will be more open to adding more first party games sooner to the service.

TheKingKratos322d ago

Kribwalker

That's not what he said at all lol

Glad you achieved that dream. Can't wait to play the PS5 in all it's awesome glory. God of war 2 and horizon 2

nyu1322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

As a PC gamer, I am STOKED to see PS exclusives on next gen consoles. It is going to be absolutely insane.

Same for XBOX (which also release on PC), hope MS do well with their investments. Next gen is going to bring a very big leap and I can't wait to see what devs can do.

Teflon02322d ago

I just want MS to release rare games on PC. Kameo, Conker and the Banjo's. I'd gladly buy em all

KillZallthebeast322d ago

Pc gamers know that consoles tend to dictate the games. Bring on next gen I want my pc to run coolly and not sweat but also burn bright as the sun.

Jin_Sakai323d ago (Edited 323d ago )

Head of Guerrilla Games now overseeing WWS, Shuhei Yoshida taking role in helping indies, and Mark Cerny being the architect of PS5. I’m pretty sure PS5 is on track for success.

Jin_Sakai323d ago (Edited 323d ago )

Sounds like Ryan knows what he’s doing.

“One of our tasks is to take that PS4 community and transition it to PS5 at a scale and pace that we've never delivered before."

“Yes, there will be new entrants with deep pockets and strengths in areas where distribution of content creation might move. But those new entrants don't yet have the strengths that we have, which have taken us many years to painstakingly accumulate. And all of those strengths [the brand, content and community]... They may not be readily understood in business terms, but they're much valued, much trusted and much loved by those who play PlayStation games. If we play to those strengths, I see no reason for us not to be really optimistic about the future."

“But our stance on the inclusion of first-party games in PlayStation Now in terms of what we've done this month is very different to our stance 12 months ago. I don't want to say this is what PlayStation Now is going to be like forever. But certainly right now, given how some of our first party IP is incredibly special and valuable, we just want to treat them with amazing care and respect, and have those launches be clean and pure."

HighPlayer28322d ago

Soon all PS exclusives will be on PS now same day of release just like XGP.

MasterCornholio322d ago

I don't think that will happen anytime soon. As long as PlayStation exclusives sell extremely well I don't believe they will push a subscription service with them. What I do see happening are the exclusives arriving on now when sales start to drop alot for these exclusives.

nucky64322d ago

i'm not sure why you'd think that - it's not what ryan was saying.

P_Bomb322d ago

Movies still try to hit the box office and festivals first. Direct-to-video has never been the top of tinsel-town’s mountain. If anything that’s where careers go to die. Disney didn’t strike a new deal with Sony to go to Hulu and Sony isn’t going to leave 10 million copies of TLOU2 on the table either.

Silly gameAr322d ago

@highplayer28

That's a great way to lose money, sales, and support.

322d ago
ShadowWolf712322d ago

I love how you Xbox/Streaming dudes keep insisting he's really saying the opposite of what he literally just said.

Thundercat77322d ago

PS exclusives sell very well. Why they would do that? Gamepass was made because of the poor sales of Xbox games .

322d ago
chiefJohn117322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

It depends if XGP takes off even more. You see Sony is starting to follow suit after witnessing the success of gamepass and Now doing better after putting more recent games and a cheaper price point on it. If day one exclusives causes subs to quadruple they will do it, at least with specific games.

@gamingunited MS have been Bragging idk where you been lol. You compared a pillar of the PS brand to a new ip with crappy reviews. Damn gamepass got you to put both in the same breath. Nuff said. It's like comparing Halo to The Order and saying Halo sells what The Order did in subs. If that's the case The Order did a good ass job, so that's a W for SOT. On top of that Xbox and PS4 for the most part target different audiences. Most ppl are 1 and done with these ps exclusives. Maybe beat it twice. A game like SOT is being played over and over and getting ppl to re-sub.

TheKingKratos322d ago

"MS refuses to talk Gamepass revenue"
https://n4g.com/news/clicko...

That doesn't sound like bragging at all

I’m all for them keeping their own plans to themselves it’s not out for Over a year not only could things change between now and then if they divulge everything they are doing you end up with the competition or mainly Xbox going haha we’re having SSD drives faster loading times basically what Sony announced the other day we’re doing. 🐑
Keep it secret surprises can be great they ain’t gonna screw it up they learned from ps3 and even PS4 which was a major success compared to their previous gen but they know what’s worked and what hasn’t.
Keep it secret I say Microsoft might have to make their own plans 😱😏😂 28525;🤓✌🏻
