MediEvil's Poor Reception Could Derail PlayStation 1 Nostalgia Wave

Medievil on PS4 has had a pretty mediocre reception from critics. Could this lead to the death of PS1 remakes?

TheColbertinator2065d ago

Much better PS1 games from that era need to be remade. Plenty of potential but Sony has no idea of how to capitalize on their dormant IPs. I would tell them but I'm too busy.

naruga2065d ago (Edited 2065d ago )

medievil along with crash bandicoot could have a been (bought and) remade through Sony s own studios and be extremely well done ...but as with Activision and Crash ,Sony preferred to remake it quickly and cheap without catching the original atmosphere and feeling , they just throwed the game to new 3D map editor and that s it .....my dream would be original Crash trilogy to be bought and remade from scratch by Sony themselves

Profchaos2065d ago

No the crash remakes where actually quite good there's some sacrifices that are going to have to be made because when crash was originally made the hit boxes were flat but now they have rounded edges so it's a very tiny but impactful change to the game that will hurt those that remember it from muscle memory alone.

Spyro was actually the perfect remake however in my opinion if anything it should have been harder like an optional additional difficulty thrown in to increase the challenge

TKCMuzzer2065d ago

Do you honesty think Actvision would have let Crash go cheap?

SegaSaturn6692065d ago

Really? Crash felt great to me. Haven't touched medievil yet, though...

You are very misinformed.

1. The game is technically rebuilt from the ground up. It's beautiful.

2. The game is incredibly faithful to the original. They even brought in some of the original creators to ensure it was faithful. It absolutely captures the feel of the original, virtually everything is the same just slightly improved.

3. Other Ocean went to great lengths with this game. It wasn't quick and easy. They worked with the original code and actually brought some concepts to life that were never fully realized in the original because of time and money constraints.

This is basically the ultimate addition of MediEvil the way the original developers had always wanted.

Fans of the original are thrilled with this remake/master. Also, it isn't a full fledged reimagining like RE2. It's a faithful technical remake/remaster and it's priced at just $30 because of it. It makes no sense for critics to trash the game, it's like they were expecting a $60 reimagining like RE2.

A game I wish got a proper remake is threads of Fate. That game was amazing. But really rough. Maybe a sequel or something would be fine too. As long as they bring back the 2 main characters

Exvalos2065d ago

hell yes man! threads of fate aka Dew prism, I still got my copy that game was amazing in its time

Selling well and that's all companies care about not what some wanna be journalists think

In today's age reviews matter less than ever before and this game selling well and user reviews being 15 points higher proves that

Maybe instead of just 'remaking' it they could do what Capcom did and reimagine it. As someone who reviewed MediEvil it was fine as a nostalgic experience but it felt old

2pacalypsenow2065d ago

I remember when RE1 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma were just remakes and they got critical acclaim

ABizzel12065d ago

If you're talking about RE GameCube, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma on PS3, then those games were beyond a decade ago and released at a point where their mechanics still made sense, Because RE was PS1 -> GC (successor generation), and Ninja Gaiden Sigma was Xbox -> PS3 (successor generation).

MediEvil is a PS1 game in mechanics and all, with early PS4 graphics. That's 3 generations of gameplay enhancements that needed to be done.

The vast majority of PS1 gameplay mechanics, especially for action-based games, cannot hold up 4 generations later, and if these classics aren't being remade with the same care that Ratchet and Clank, Resident Evil 2, Shadow of the Colossus, FF7 and a few others are being done, then they're better off just release the PS1 version as a free download for console and a cheap mobile game.

Nothing everything needs to be remade, but those that are needed to be a large enough franchise with a strong following/cult following that can sell itself on brand alone, and seeing it reenvisioned is the bread and butter.

If they want remakes then PS1:
Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross
Legacy of Kain
Tony Hawks Pro Skater (I don't think there was a good skateboarding game this gen)
Twisted Metal 1+2
Silent Hill
Legend of Dragoon
Bushido Blade
Parasite Eve
Dino Crisis
SOCOM

ABizzel

MediEvil was already reimagined and fans didn't like it. That was the point of this game, a faithful remake/remaster.

It isn't supposed to be RE2. It isn't a reimagining. It's not a $60 AAA.

Not everything needs to be remade? Well not everything needs to be reimagined as a cookie cutter AAA. This is not meant to be R&C or RE2. It's MediEvil the way fans wanted it. It's beautiful and it's faithful.

If everything has to be brought into 8th gen cookie cutter standards, then why do people clamor for PS1 and PS2 classics/BC? There is room for both reimagined 8th gen AAA and faithful remake/master. If people didn't want classic games/gameplay then there would be no reason for BC or classic games.

Onimusha Warlords came out recently and it was given considerably less effort than MediEvil. It was basically just a plain remaster yet critics didn't trash that game. It was hideous to look at and the gameplay wasn't exactly current gen standards. Did you say these same things about Warlords?

Segata2065d ago

They did reimagine it on PSP and it sucked. Fans were not happy with it. Fans have been happy with this remake however.

Profchaos2065d ago

But isn't that the point of they change to much it would fail to be a remake and fall into reimagining like ratchet and Clank did or re2. Nothing wrong with that but sometimes there's games like Spyro where you don't want the experience altered.

Lionsguard2065d ago

This is exactly why I am 100% on board with how the direction the FF7 remake is going. It would have been nothing but a waste to pander to nostalgia-zealots who want a 1:1 remake instead of a reimagining. Some games like Spyro and Crash are fine as 1:1 remakes but a game like Medieval could have been so much more if they had just decided to go the extra mile. I'm not saying turn it into Dark Souls but it had the potential to really stand out as a new game.

IamTylerDurden12064d ago (Edited 2064d ago )

They already did with Resurrection.

This is the problem. Reviewers not understanding what they are playing.

This is a $30 technical remake, but essentially it's a remaster in every other sense. It isn't, nor was it EVER marketed to be anything like RE2.

RE2 was a different animal. It was meant to be a completely new experience. A new AAA game based on Resident Evil 2. It's a $60 game. MediEvil is basically a remaster, a very lovingly built remaster with so much effort put in, it almost qualified as a remake.

Don't deduct points because more effort was given. They could've easily just cleaned up the original and slapped it on a disc and called it remastered. If this was a true remake they would've charged $40 or more.

They went through hell to get this game right. To make it authentic. They brought in the original creators, worked with the original code and even fully realized some concepts that never made it in the original because of time and money constraints.

It is MediEvil, just tighter and prettier. It's the version of MediEvil that the original developers intended to deliver. It's faithful, it's $30, it's fantastic. Fans of the original are thrilled! One guy was literally crying because MediEvil meant so much to him and this was so beautifully built.

In a perfect world the “critics” would have no influence whatsoever. We’re not waiting for gamepro magazine to learn about games anymore. Reviews are in large part outdated trash. Honestly, I think it depends on the sales. It’s more about being worth it opposed to a bunch of bloggers’ opinions.

ArchangelMike2065d ago

Exaclty. Games like Detroit Become Human, and Days Gone evidence the fact that the critics sometimes have one agenda, that the gaming public simply don't have. Both those games sold very well for sony - despite the criticism from the gaming press. Heck Days Gone already has a sequel green lit by Sony because it sold so well - 6th best selling playstation exclusive.

ninsigma2065d ago

Wow didn't know about the sequel being given the go ahead. That's awesome! Days gone was a great experience (and honestly much better than I thought it would be).

Italiano12345672065d ago

Well its selling great in both uk and us

sprinterboy2065d ago

Absolute gem of a game, one of my favs this gen for sure and look fwd to a sequal.
Over 80 hours my 1st playthrough yet kinda funny games fast travelled everywhere and did it 30hrs and gave it a 6 (missed most the game)
Does anyone know the sales numbers for days gone yet?

IamTylerDurden12064d ago

Agreed. A 71 is a fucking joke for Days Gone. People love it though. Already around 4 million sold. Sorry critics, but u failed.

Not to bad.

Gravity Rush 1 and 2 are amazing can you believe the guy who created Silent Hill created these.

PixelOmen1101d ago

Gravity Rush 2 is probably the most underrated game on PS4.

DarXyde1100d ago

Agreed. And it was definitely top 5 on the platform for me. Genuinely loved how charming the series is/was.I loved it so much that I Platinumed it twice (Gravity Rush 2 and its Japanese variant, Gravity Daze 2).
Such a lovely series. I say this once every 3 or so months, but Sony committed the gravest sin in my eyes by dismantling my favorite Sony studio, Japan Studio and I really had a hard time forgiving that.

BlaqMagiq11100d ago

Absolute classics, both Gravity Rush 1 & 2.
