5 Ways The Outer Worlds Could’ve Been Even Better

1. I think more 'unique' weapons, but overall there's plenty of weapon options available as far as 'types'.

2. Very few can be considered as such and go to the same place as main missions. I don't see the issue. They can also aid in influencing options for completing main missions.

3. Abso-freaking-lutely. Probably the weakest area of character development. I took flaws just for the heck of it, but I ended up buying mostly weight reducing perks over perks that might do something else. They're just that bland.

4. No. No. No. The world worked as well as it did with low load times because of the hub design and concept. Making it seamless only takes away what they can do and adds more bugs to the game. No. No. No.

5. Yes, but only if they don't pump up health so heavily on hard like they have. But, if they do this, they would definitely also need better indicators for enemy locations around you. The AI as it is can be managed, but if they move around more, you're combating the camera then and not the AI.

These are five things that would raise The Outer Worlds to the level of an average, serviceable RPG. As it is, the game is functional and uninspiring.

I have no great affection for Bethesda. I wanted to like The Outer Worlds, played it for about 10 hours, then just . . . stopped because I was bored with it. It's sort of okay, but basically lackluster.

That's getting blown way up. It completely feels like an open world game with plenty of exploration. Traveling to another planet takes all of 55 seconds total. I'm not even sure you can create the type of "big open world" you want in a space game, unless it's one planet, which makes the whole space thing pointless.

Maybe not like no man's sky big, but half of elite dangerous or something... Open world like that, maybe smaller, but absolutely not impossible. Maybe on next gen we will se the ultimate open world space game... Starfield maybe...

Personally, the hub design is really good for reducing bugs, maintaining content in a region, and the like. Opening a world up often leads to issues with direction, scarcity and dearth of content in certain regions, and more. I don't think an open world design necessarily adds more to the game over a controlled hub-world design like this and the Tomb Raider games. There's still a lot to explore (did you find the rock splitter?).

Tomb raider, uncharted, this and others with the half open solution is just stupid and irritating, make up your mind and don't make these wanna be open world that still not is...just weird unbalanced games..
I wanna have the feeling of being lost in a giga open world, i think Death Stranding will bring this and still be a complex well dome game, hope more will follow on ps5 with a lot more depth..

I think most of this stuff is because of budgetary constraints, especially the one continuous open world and gun/enemy variety issues.
Hopefully their next game with more money behind them will let them unleash a bit more as I'm sure they can do it.

I don't think you quite understand how game development works journo, sure some of the things you listed could be improved but there is such a thing as budget restrictions. They are not (nor have they ever been) a AAA studio.

I'm really enjoying it but it just doesn't have the atmosphere of the Fallout games IMO.
Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4 are all better games IMO.
And I just love the VATS system in Fallout, blowing an enemies head off in VATS never gets old.
The combat in Outer Worlds is a bit naff, I've found melee much more effective than range weapons.
And it's too easy to steal stuff in Outer Worlds, you can literally crouch behind an NPC and steal a weapon that's on a table right in front of them or empty their cash register. And if you do get spotted you can always easily intimidate/persuade your way out of it.
