An update from the game's director.
I don't mind but they literally just announced the release date last month, you'd have known if it needed more time To be fair I'm more annoyed the UK and EU got the shaft over the Ellie edition and we're roughly paying the same for the standard collectors edition, again paying more for less. They did the same for the Post Pandemic edition. Oh well gives us some breathing time during the first couple of months of next year
All valid points afaic. I mean what happened since a few weeks ago that they had to delay the game for an additional 3 months?
They simply realized they needed more time for polish, as explained in the article: "However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality."
@Nyxus Look I'm not going to argue this is a bad thing, seriously it's not, I'm glad as it gives me more time to play on other games like Doom or the FFVII remake but they've been keeping this game so close to their chest for years and when they FINALLY decide it's time to show us something, giving us a solid release date suddenly it's "Oh wait...actually...no sorry scratch that" Again...I don't care but it's a little odd, they've had so much time to think the whole thing over, they could have just gotten to the point where it's finally ready to go gold then told us the release date, that's how anticipated the game is.
I'm not bothered by the delay. Good things come to those that wait. And this is going to be worth it.
How much more time do they need? This is their second game this gen and they cut the multiplayer?!? Man, they must have a really relaxed workplace over there
Maybe they now want to drop MP at the same time
@ilikestuff This is their third game, and no, they do not have a relaxed schedule. Just ask Amy Hennig.
Regarding MP, Knowing ND's obsession with detail and polish there is no way they delayed the game to add MP at launch simply because it wouldn't be enough time to finish it, then do some betas, go back optimise etc... I believe their statement, they need more time to polish the main game and that's fine by me, there's lots of games to keep us occupied until then (Q1 2020 is crowded enough).
It took months of work to announce that date. Overlapping that was months of work to determine if they needed to push it. It happens often in business. It can take a long time to determine if a metric will be met, which includes a new metric added that could cause a re-adjustment of that overall.
Oh dude, thank God!!! I didn't want to choose between spending my time on this or FFVII remake!, With work and a kid I do not have the time I used to, so this works two-fold, it gives them more time to release a highly polished game and it gives me more time to actually play FFVII remake.
Not really much breathing time cause the juggernaut named Cyberpunk is out April so there’s not much time to complete that game before last of us. Man this annoys me lool
Yeah, I agree. It’s crazy awkward how they announced a date, just announced a month later that it’s going to be delayed by 3 months. But it is what it is bro. Delays suck the big the one, first Doom and now TLOU pt 2. Hopefully FF VII Remake keeps its date.
I'm hoping is that they saw our backlash about cutting the MP and they are delaying it 3 months to finish it up and add it in now... that would make me a happy panda
I'd be pissed if it was for MP, because couldn't they just release the multiplayer 3 months later anyway, without delaying the part 98% actually care about?
They would have known if they needed more time at an executive level, but not in the marketing department. It was probably a discussion that had to go through some Sony executives before being passed down, hence the seemingly sudden change.
Yeah, delays can be annoying enough but at least when the release date is set a year or so before you can then understand how they got it wrong. Like you said, in this instance they only announced it recently so what the hell were they thinking? I'm beginning to wonder what polishing even means at this point, from an industry wide perspective. For me, polishing means it's virtually ready for sale, ready for the public but what the hell, after years of development, we may as well just make it extra shiny if you know what I mean. It's also bizarre because they've been so secretive and so tight-lipped that you'd have thought that when they did finally speak, they'd know what they were talking about. There's also the fact that some outlets reported the game was pretty much ready but that the release date had been moved to accommodate Death Stranding but it seems DS had nothing to do with it after all. Shows how much they know. Personally, I always want a developer to take all the time they need but I'd be happier if release dates were announced ONLY when the game has gone gold/or they are absolutely certain. Phoenix Point, for example, is driving me crazy :)
That's disappointing, but if it leads to a better end result I'm fine with the delay. "However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team." Another advantage is that it isn't as close to the release of FF7R as the initial release date was.
The problem I see for Sony is we have the PS5 in the fall 2020, this is now releasing in May. We still have one more big exclusive which is Ghosts of Thushima pardon the spelling. Now your gap closes on this game because you don’t want to release to close to either LoUP2 or the PS5. Both these big exclusives are meant to push the last PS4s out and now you’re really limiting that or GoT gets pushed to a PS5 release.
It's one month more than what we had between the first game, and the release of the PS4, assuming the PS5 releases in November as well. The first game sold fine. It's not really a problem. The first holiday sales of the PS5 will likely be 3-4 million units. That still leaves a rather sizable number of PS4 users that can pick up the game.
DigitalHope, Keep in mind that Sony and third party developers support Playstation consoles well into the launch of new hardware. Ghost of Tsushima may very well be cross generation. We just heard it's definitely a PS4 game, which makes no claim about being (or NOT being) a PS5 title. Certainly possible, and frankly, the footage of the game we've been shown looks really incredible. Almost too incredible for current hardware, but I am not convinced that was PS5 footage either (I think it would run away 60fps if it was). Either way, Ghost of Tsushima can launch anytime, really. Don't forget, PS5 is backwards compatible. I don't think Sony really needs to worry about the impact on PS4 sales either; anyone who held off buying a PS4 is likely a budget gamer and probably won't splurge on PS5 right away. It's a nonissue in my opinion. Either way, Sony sells you a console.
they released god of war 2 on ps2 after ps3 was released. dont think they worry that much cause unlike other consoles, PlayStations keep selling long after the support ends.
I'm perfectly fine with ND asking for more time. It worked out pretty damn well for the first game, and ND earned the right to make these requests imo. But man, I am legitimately surprised that so many people think FFVII will hit its date. It's Square. It's FF. We know how this ends...
So it was delayed. As Foxtrot mentioned above it is quite odd that they would announce the release date a month ago just to go ahead and delay it anyway. Well if they need the extra time to get everything right then it'll be worth it. Still though this gets me wondering when Ghost of Tsushima plans on releasing as I was really looking forward to that. I was assuming first few months of 2020 but not sure so now with this coming out in May and the PS5 out that holiday it's gonna have to squeeze in there somewhere. Busy year for Sony/PlayStation 2020
From sources I’ve read the developers have wrestled with the new technology implemented in this game. It’s groundbreaking from what I’m hearing. If they need more time I’m for it. Anything that helps make the final protect as polished as possible.
You know. Sources. Which I can't reveal.
Vague, unconfirmable sources the most reliable
Wrestled with technology they developed, it's just polish and bugs at this stage.
From reliable sources I’ve read the developers are implementing a new technology for A.I.
I know their animation paths are me tech that they've developed, didn't know the A.I. was causing issues - figured it was just bugs and polish.
Well from the original gameplay reveal the AI appeared to be a step above anything else on the market. Which is why I can believe something kind that.
That is fine we can
The release date of FF7 Remake and TLoU 2 were to close.
Garbage excuse. I love it when so many games I want come out back to back. I buy them all and relish in the gaming goodness I did it when I was young and poor too and I'll do it now.
Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! Ehh gives me time.to play persona scramble since it was releasing a day before this.
That's ok. I'll wait for the remastered PS5 version.
Thats what they want in of playing the better version
Take ya time, folks! The game is gonna be PHENOM.
The greatest thing about Sony and their studios is that, for the most part, they give their studios the time they need to produce a fantastic product. Honestly, I am a desperate to play the game as the next guy, but I'd rather wait a little longer for a more polished product.
More time for my backlog then :D
Wow... maybe there adding in mutiplayer because of the backlash? I wouldn't mind an entire game for factions for a separate platnium but this would be fine too I guess. It's all good news regardless. Can't wait
That is exactly what they are doing MP will be a completely different game, and are going to build on what was. It's a stellar idea. Be it free, 40$ or $60 it's going to be amazing TLOU and UC4 MP were both so good, I can't imagine what ND could do with 100% attention.
Ya I would be happy with that myself. Gotta wait and see.
I hope that we get as much as polished game as possible. I can wait.
Imma just have to play FF7R for the time being.
FFVII Remake will be far better anyways.
Sad days, but delays are inevitable. Long as its for the better quality of the game then I don't mind.
I know i will receive alot of hate for this but I was so so looking forward to this game. I am annoyed because why would they announce a release date and then in a month delay it? They should know if they aint ready. Had the FEBRUARY release date was revealed say around April or May and now announce a delay i would be fine but within a Month. Which proves that February release date was FAKE to begin with probably to pick up Preorders. Lame move. Also FF7 comes out around 1st week of March which is a timed exclusive on the Ps4. So Sony would never release both games so close. DISAPPOINTED.. Also that doesnt mean i said LOU2 wont sell loads of copies but early preorder helps and CDPR explained it better when they started CYBERPUNK preorder.
They possibly needed some more polish time but imo I think they knew Q1 was a crowded time for big AAA releases & went for a Q2 time frame instead.
That could well be the case but you know what? I'd rather they just admitted it :)
Maybe changed their mind about when they'd be ready? Maybe just wanted to move it to a less crowded time? It is what it is, but I'm disappointed I have to wait a few more months. I'll still buy and play the game though.
I already preordered it.. Anyways now my hype has been shifted to Cyberpunk.. February we may see PS5 getting revealed..
What makes you so sure that Cyberpunk 2077 won't get delayed again? Any games that didn't hit the gold status can be delayed not to mention the biggest and longest ND game ever made is still 4-5 months away from original release.
If cyberpunk gets delayed now i am okay because they announced the release date around E3.. so After all these months its obvious they prolly will know how long they will take. ND delayed the release date after announcing it in a Month. dont you think its weird. FEBRUARY 21st was never given truth me told. With FF7 around 1st week of March which is a timed exclusive Sony would never release lou2 that close. So they just wanted to hype it up and they succeeded and got loads of preorders.
This delay kind of hurts.
To act like I'm not disappointed would be disingenuous. This hurts. Especially knowing an inevitable PS5 remaster will be arriving shortly after. Big delay as well
I expected this. One month away from being a 7 year release from the original.
I mean...I still plan on being gamer in May 2020 so personally I don't have a problem.
I was planning on stopping all my gaming come April. So this really screws up my time table. Thanks a lot Naughty Dog for keeping me a gaming addict longer.
Few more months won't hurt. Naughty Dog will deliver a masterpiece once more.
I'm glad the team at Naughty Dog has decided to delay the game to ensure it's the best it can be. I'd much rather wait a few extra months to play a game that is finished, rather than it being rushed out the door to meet a deadline that results in a lower quality experience. I'm sure it was a hard decision but it's certainly the right one, other developers should take note.
This gives me more time to play other games. I have it preordered
Endure and survive
As long as the game is amazing and memorable as hell. I don't care if they need a few more months.
Delayed just like the first game
